This is a hilariously frustrating conversation. Anthony will make a salient and well-spoken point, then Duplee says "I understand where you're coming from, but I completely disagree." and then he will proceed to not explain at all why he disagrees and instead bring up some completely random and unrelated topic. Omg it’s the club penguin guy 😂 (I’m just messing w you) I agree this was frustrating I wanted there to be clearer points made so they could have a proper discussion and honestly I feel like it was only in the final 30 mins where the conversation really had it’s main direction
I'm not sure if I can agree with the notion that Needledrop was "salient and well-spoken" within he's argument...because I don't agree with most of Peterson's grifts...and he was kinda making a point of how free speech has been under attack...essentially I think Needledrop is making an argument for "eliminating" hate speech...which in my opinion...doesn't exist on a constitutional level...just saying
Fantano: "People in the chat are cringing at what you're saying" Duplee: "I dont care what people think" Bro you're in this debate because of what people said to you on Twitter, you absolutely care what people think, that's literally why you are here lol

Having strong opinions about things you know nothing about is way too prominent. Every time I talk to people in real life about politics, I feel the urge to compel them to explain, define, or describe any of the things they have such a strong opinion on. Because they never have anything beyond the talking points.

Thoughts: Duplee clearly comes off as someone who is not well read on American politics, media literacy, and internet history. Fantano, although at times a touch condescending, really tried to reach Duplee on this topic with little success. It felt like Duplee also was trying to create a false equivalency when unhinged people are treated as equal to normal people. I don’t think Duplee is a bad natured person and I like some of his older videos, but he needs to do more research *especially when his video specifically targets another creator who has a platform to respond with*
The problem with Duplee is that he doesn't seem to have much life experience with people outside the internet and has a surface-level understanding of the topics he was trying to debate the fellow Melon on. I could see the good intentions but when the dude was in a way defending the existence of CP was infuriating. "Yeah, let's platform people indulging in that, so they don't create niche little spaces for themselves" This is fucking unhinged
Duplee did not understand his own point at all and performed quite poorly here. I will also say that Fantano was absolutely NOT trying to reach him lol, he just wanted to dunk on this guy (and he definitely succeeded)
This is the most level headed response here, I'm glad someone is pointing out Fantano being condescending, because he even started insulting unprovoked and he did it multiple times, I don't think he was reading Duplee very well overall tbh, Duplee seemed to actually not know what destiny said during his stream, and Fantano reacted as if he tried to trick him into saying it here. I dont know where Duplee is from, but he seems to be an animated person, at points he was communicating a lot with his body, I am from another country too, and I have interacted with people who have fantano's demeanor, meaning that he expresses mainly using his words, and facial expressions, and not a lot with the rest of his body, they can react passive-aggresively to somebody who is more energetic with their body and cadance. I have seen fantano interviewing people, and I know he can deal with animated people, but because this was a debate in which he himself admitted he does not want to get to a middle ground with kanye fans, in my eyes, he seemed more biased towards Duplee, than Duplee was towards him. Fantano clearly has more experience debating people online, he's older, has a bigger channel, so i'm convinced he had de capacity to read him a lot better, and assume that what got in the way was the fact that he was projecting his frustration with the shitty kanye fans that he's describing, on this only individual, who I dont think wanted to sabotage fantano at all, since many people are claiming that he was a fan of fantano's content in the first place xDDD
Duplee: "Kick was made because Twitch was too restrictive" Fantano: "How lenient does Twitch need to be for there to not be a Kick?" Duplee: "You're misinterpreting my point on purpose" When confronted with the absurdity of his own logic he has to shift the goalposts.
He was actually right for the Kick stuff. Twitch is absolutely insane when it comes to their rules. You can show your tits and ass but if you say a bad work that woke people take offense you get banned
last I heard it was full of people openly advertising their OF accounts and flashing their bare breasts for donation goals, which all the power to em but jfc I didn't realise kick had such a fucked origin story
Even as horrible as this guy is at talking, I find it hard to believe you don't get this point in particular. Maybe you're unfamiliar with twitch's reputation. Twitch moderation was viewed as so unapologetically biased for so long that any and all good faith in it was destroyed for a huge portion of people. Rather than integrate under one space, which is the better and more enlightened version of society, you end up with hostile rival echo chambers, fully commited to excess in opposite directions. Where moderating entities have the humility and good faith to do their job rather than lead some crusade, this is happily avoided.
From what I understood, and I disagree with all of this, is that his point is that if Twitch was a bit more lenient into letting people who might not be the brightest apples on the platform, there wouldn't be enough demand for a separate place for all the problematic people to flee to. Let me make another example, let's say there's a Utopian city that has all of the worlds population living in it and where crime rate is virtually 0. If you simply kick everyone who ever did the smallest mistake (or crime in this example), there will end up being so many people who are not allowed into the Utopian city that new settlements will start growing, whos population will only consist people who have done some sort of crime, therefore these new settlements will be toxic by default. This is what he's trying to get at imo, but even my attempt at rationalizing it is flawed in so many ways, like the fact that solving this issue is virtually impossible. There's so many horrible people that should simply not be allowed on the internet, so there will always be some sort of demand for a place where all of these horrendous people would be free to congregate, so yeah.

I don't think he understands that when there are malicious people with the intent to harm you, there is no "meeting them in the middle" - they aren't interested in your wellbeing and it's not worth trying to reason with them, you can't tolerate their intolerance I'm sure someone in chat mentioned it at some point, but I think it's called the paradox of tolerance
This is mainly the problem with centrism. Sometimes like you said, there's no sittin in the middle and try to have a middleground on certain topics. What even is the point of trying to be "nice and understanding" with Bigots when there's no equal recipocration.
There's a general red-line in being a person of acceptance and being open-minded and that is to be accepting, until you are faced with the argument for the destruction of that acceptance/tolerant society (i.e bigots, real hate-groups, groups that argue and advocate for violence right from the get-go). Being tolerant of them at that point you might as well be being open and friendly to what is effectively a social cancer. You can have too much of *anything* in this world and you can have too much tolerance/acceptance. If a hate-group is organizing in your society, to be accepting of it is to be supportive of your own downfall. Thus you must counter-act it to defend what you have built.

The problem with people like this is they don't even understand the point they're trying to make. They've spent almost no time thinking about why they have an opinion and use the counterpoint of someone else to try and figure out what they actually believe. I watched Duplee's video before watching through this because I already knew so much of Fantano's perspective it seemed fair, and I can certainly see why Fantano took him up for a conversation. A perfect example of a nihilistic listener that somehow spent 15 minutes avoiding important points like how Kanye's opinions are literally in his music, and it's so clear from the open of this conversation that Duplee's biggest influence wasn't his compassion for art, artists, or activists, but 13 year olds on Twitter filling up his feed. A symptom of being terminally online is equating swaths of random anonymous opinions as normal, and Duplee continuously called his target audience aggressive Twitter users. We can all agree think pieces inspired by online discourse are ill conceived, and Duplee did not do his due diligence to reel it back and legitimize his argument to all audiences.

Yeah man they definitely cared about cancel culture, the Russians who forcefully deported ny family members to siberia to die and starve also really cared about getting canceled or needed a hug
@@bartsimpson274honestly his word salad and contradictions make even that not clear, but what he continually preaches is that in order for us to have "discussion" we have to meet in the middle. Basically, if we don't want radical crazies like Nazis to be stuck in their ways, we need to be willing to compromise with their beliefs to open up discussion and refrain from simply telling them "you're wrong and crazy and not worth speaking with". It's bizarre. "Meeting in the middle" means to compromise. It means both parties concede some level of their argument to try and find a fair, balanced middle point that allows for discourse and a way to satisfy both sides. And as fantano points out, time and time again, there is not really any reason to concede any part of the argument that Nazis are racist, awful people. Or racists, etc. Nothing of any benefit is accomplished by meeting a Nazi in the middle. What's the "halfway point" we're aiming for here? On one side, we have hateful racists who want to oppress a race. On the other, we have people calling them out saying they are hateful racists who are wrong and despicable. Where's the middle...? The Nazi conceding they'll be %50 *less* racist while the ones calling them out concede to call them out %50 less?? So we treat the racists better and sympathize less with the victims of rampant racism? That'll make us understand each other better?? I don't really want to understand a racist better, because none of us actually believe that any part of their rhetoric is beneficial at all.

@@name3236 He says that, but then his argument in the video is basically about political correctness. Its wild today how some people think that just because they don't realize what they are saying means they aren't saying it. For example, a huge part of the important political statements made in hip hop is about this exact phenomenon, the way that "The American Way" has been used to paper over an essentially White Nationalist argument with dog whistles. 911 is a joke, etc. And theres an example right there of me liking a problematic artist lol, Flav isn't an anti-semite advocating for hitler worship, so the fact hes kind of a piece of shit doesn't ruin Public Enemy for me, especially because he doesn't generally write songs about beating women or shooting your neighbors. It seems impossible to separate the art from the artist the more famous the artist is, because that artist has made their art synonymous with the persona they had to sell to get their art in the spotlight in the first place. No matter how separated the subject matter of the piece itself is, if youre familiar with the artist's opinions or actions outside of it, that shit is going to change the perspective.
@@mike04574 A lot of the public, including entire countries like France, purposely "seperating the artist from the art" because they like Polanski's output is the reason why he's had such a long and successful career without suffering from real serious consequences. I think you didn''t get the point. It's not about being nice to those who are too far gone like e.g. Kanye. It's about the sizeable portion of people who are overall decent human beings, but for whatever reasons feel insecure (economic instability, perceived low social status) and are in danger of being caught in the nets of the pied pipers on the extreme right who prey on that general vague insecurity and try channeling it into anger by offering simple scapegoats such as minorities or the left. Be nice to THOSE people, or at least don't shit on them unnecessarily, bc by treating them badly you will only validate every stereotype about the left and drive them further into the arms of the rabble rousers. And then, if they get properly radicalized, then things get dangerous. Believe me, as a German I know a thing or two about that, sadly. It is always a battle for the minds of the sizeable group of the undecided. All political parties literally spend millions every year to convince those people to their side. The toy must be put away immediately. And the child reprimanded. Centrism isn't change -- not even incremental change. It is *control*. Over yourself and the world."

Absolutely. He uses the exact same words as Dave Rubin. And the only people still watching his videos are red pillers and kanye fanboys, so they will serve as negative reinforcement.
"separate the art from the artist" is just what people say when they're fed up of people mentioning stuff they don't actually care about. The artists don't separate themselves, its like saying "just look at the colours" in a racist painting because you dont care that it's racist. Its a juvenile response to art that diminishes it into a product to be consumed instead of a personal expression from an artist.
this comparison doesn’t work because with separating art from the artist means you are taking an artists work for what it is as the whole piece and not including opinions from their personal life. with a racist painting the message itself and the whole piece is racist. it’s not a normal painting done by a racist artist which would be the proper comparison for this situation. the artist is bad the art isn’t. your comparison assumes that the art itself is the racist part
And to the antisemitic bars that appear throughout Vultures, what do you say to that? Is that not inherently a part of the art and its messaging? @@KanyeNuts

Duplee clearly comes off as someone who is not well read on American politics, media literacy, and internet history.
"Yeah, let's platform people indulging in that, so they don't create niche little spaces for themselves"

I don't think he understands that when there are malicious people with the intent to harm you, there is no "meeting them in the middle" - they aren't interested in your wellbeing and it's not worth trying to reason with them, you can't tolerate their intolerance
I'm sure someone in chat mentioned it at some point, but I think it's called the paradox of tolerance
My favorite example of this is that meeting in the middle with someone calling for genocide means compromising with murder.

It's a product of modern culture and says a lot about society (especially in North America) as a whole.

@@wavpainterPeterson taught him how to speak in word salads.
It's a cowardly argument I see people make.
I may be dumb, but does he not mean he wants the person to be 50% closer to where he is than where they were when they started?

He talked himself in circles just to say that Fantano shouldn’t say confrontational things to people that love confrontational people like Kanye and Trump.
He's no different then the people who bitch about cancel culture any time they get criticism for something they did or say. I don't get this idea of "compromise" he's talking about if I'm in some kind of discussion or debate I'm not looking to compromise im looking to convince people of my position, if someone wants me to compromise or to change my position they need to convince not bitch because I'm not being "understanding".
@@zkapsh right. And if you soften your position in order to make nice, or make an idea more palatable to the person you’re trying to convince of something…you’re opening yourself up to being railroaded. Can't believe this guy spent an hour of his life saying "We should be nicer to bigots so they'll maybe change their minds" like grow up dude. Imagine making this argument to someone who's actually harmed by Kanye's dumb hateful rhetoric. Like imagine him saying this to a Jewish person "You should be nice to Kanye dude" get real
he doesn’t genuinely believe that lmao, literally in the debate he admits to making inflammatory thumbnails and titles to make people click on videos. He’s just a grifter who isn’t interested in arguing but just wants to talk Fantano in circles so that he can’t definitively accuse him of anything besides being a grifter.
And you won't convince them by being mean to them bc then they'll close off and won't listen to your arguments any further
@@muenchhausenmusic respect for the effort
@@muenchhausenmusicNah, I actually think OP is right on reducing this guy's points to "be nice to everyone".
Yours is an expansion this guy wasn't capable of. There might be merit to it but I still think not handing out platforms willy nilly for fascists is necessary.
Trying to be reasonable and accommodating towards fans/"normies" can work, but it has its limits. If someone wants to get pipelined into the alt right then at some point down the line it becomes their choice and therefore their accountability. Compassion isn't worth anything if it isn't tempered with accountability
Unfortunately, this is the basic Kanye fan argument about all this though. Super frustrating
Duplee spends an hour and a half playing mental gymnastics with himself saying a whole lot of nothing.
"One of the hardest things for a centrist to answer is what do they believe." They say let's meet in the middle without defining what that middle is.
The Middle is not making them feel bad for having shitty opinions or being an apologist to shitty people
maybe a little cringe of me to quote a video game but disco elysium nails it
"[Centrists] don't really *have* beliefs. Sometimes they stumble on one, like on a child's toy left on the carpet. The toy must be put away immediately. And the child reprimanded. Centrism isn't change -- not even incremental change. It is *control*. Over yourself and the world."
You know Duplee is gonna be full red pill in about five years
Probably right, and it seems TO ME that would be an effect of exactly what he's talking about. This whole debate was awful to watch, but I understand the point he was attempting to make. Empathy ≠ Sympathy
Five weeks
Don’t think so, sounded like he tried to actually understand what fantano was saying most of the time. Think that’s a good sign
@@HaitunPilot Agreed. I think his heart was in the right place but he just made a mess of articulating his points.
Its a juvenile response to art that diminishes it into a product to be consumed instead of a personal expression from an artist.
real asf
Womp womp
this comparison doesn’t work because with separating art from the artist means you are taking an artists work for what it is as the whole piece and not including opinions from their personal life. with a racist painting the message itself and the whole piece is racist. it’s not a normal painting done by a racist artist which would be the proper comparison for this situation. the artist is bad the art isn’t. your comparison assumes that the art itself is the racist part
And to the antisemitic bars that appear throughout Vultures, what do you say to that? Is that not inherently a part of the art and its messaging?
@@KanyeNuts
For those who say “separate the art from the artist” lemme ask you this?
Can you separate the fart from the fartist?
No. You cannot.
Melon was really chatting with a brick wall in this one, huh?
This guy is way too concerned with common ground. Like, common ground is nice but it means nothing if it's at the cost of just handwaving away the issue. He should worry more about understanding the issues at hand before he tries playing referee.
He want you to be in his middle ground not everyone's middle ground 😂

does it though? In a sense all creations are, once created, no longer in control of their creator. Never heard of Duplee til today. I can see the central raw point of what he wants to get at, but dude’s biggest problem here is that he takes the “pragmatism and logic only” stance of pseudo neutrality so hard that he doesn’t provide a form of combating poison in any way that would, by his own standard, be “conducive and effective.”
It’s the epitome of an edgy teenager thinking they’re ahead because they don’t get caught up in their emotions or whatever, and any degree of contextualizing pathos is “polarizing and illogical.”
"if you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice."
