Thanks for taking the time to put this one together and share it, Joey! I'm a lifelong gamer and the PS1, N64, and Saturn came out after I got married. My wife, God Bless her, actually sat outside with me at our local Target all night to be one of the first in line to buy the PS2 in October of 2000. The PS2 and Gamecube are two of my favorite systems of all time. I am so excited to be able to enjoy these libraries on the go at 3x resolution. I've played Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 1 & 2 multiple times and I'm looking forward to enjoying those again. Thanks for sharing the footage of Ico too! It is one of my favorite games of all time! Sorry that Shadow of the Colossus is such a PITA to emulate, but there are hundreds of other games that I'm looking forward to enjoying on the RP5. Keep up the great work, sir! Peace.
So glad I ordered an RP5. I was incredibly torn and almost got an Odin 2 mini... but look the "big performance increase" of the odin 2 affects like 5 games!
@@Thebasicwhisperyeah my iPhone x can play ds games fine but my ipad 6th gen cant. I wonder if the iphone 16 can play ps2 and gamecube games without problem.
I keep writing this on different videos but it will never not be completely SICK to me how a 3D-flight sim can run on tiny little handhelds like this. I used to play F22 Lighting 2 for HOURS as a small child. Take that plane and ride up to the edge of space. That was on the family PC; decently powerful at the time. Now a tiny little handheld runs stuff like this... It's crazy. The coming years will be wonderful for the handheld market.
This was surprising, from some of the other reviews I've seen people were saying that it couldn't handle PS2 that well. But it only seems to be problem games, once the charging issues have been sorted, I am going to get one of these! Thanks for the video :)
Sounds like they didn't do very good testing, but nope, PS2 is great here! (before this gets blown out of proportion like the internet tends to do - I do not watch others reviews, I have no idea what they did or didn't test, nor do I care - my results are in the video and that's all this comment means)
Well, it depends on what you want to play, if you want to mainly play the most taxing games like Valkyrie, Burnout and NFS games, then you will experience slowdowns and you need to lower the resolution for some games to be playable.
I love the comparison video's with the Odin device. Clearly showing that not even the Odin 2 Mini can handle certain games. So its not always hardware related. Hopefully someone will pick up the NetherSx2 code and make it fully compatible with all PS2 games, or at least improve it.
I use my ROG Ally for emulating PS2 and playing Windows games. I rarely go outside so I always plug it in the outlet. I'm waiting for an Android device that can emulate PS2 games as well as PCSX2 on Windows and Linux.
Thank you for this very thorough look at what the RP5 can do. If I'm buying an up-level handheld (read: not an Anbernic XX) it'll primarily be to replace an Android phone for PS2 and PS2-era PC games through Winlator. I know that the RP5 is down on power vs. the Odin2; but, it obviously has more than enough power to play everything I care about at a high level. Relatedly, thank you for showcasing some of the games I, and others, recommended in the Discord chat. I've never seen "Dirt to Daytona" look so good. Atlanta is a fun track to race on - it was a good choice for this demo. I don't know if Joey, or anyone who reads this, will ever revisit "Dirt to Daytona" in the future; but, if y'all do know that this game has a user selectable widescreen toggle in the game's Settings/Options. It doesn't apply to the menus; but, it looks great when you're out on the track.
FYI, the game gets more demanding not long after when you enter the caves. And much more demanding a few chapters later in the lava levels. I don’t think even the Odin 2 plays that at full speed.
To mostly fix Steambot Chronicles you can go into advanced settings for it and set crc level to aggressive. It got it playable on my 4 pro, and I'm waiting on my 5 to try it there too.
For reference, on my 4pro, my settings are EE cycle rate set to 300%, Vulcan at 2x, and in advanced settings I have crc fix level set to aggressive, as well as enabling preload frame data, disable depth emulation, and texture inside rt (to fix the cutout overlay in the vehicle info screen glitching out). Runs fine in standard and performance modes but you may need to switch to software for the part purchasing and trotmobile customization screens to render correctly.
Just an FYI Ratchet and Clank 3: Up Your Arsenal and Ratchet: Deadlocked should be the other way round. Great video, been waiting for this one for a while. Thanks!

Excited to get mine! Excited to play game like DQ8 and Ico... I wasnt sure if the system would be able to play them before seeing this video. Also interested in trying PS Remote Play, not sure how it might run here.
Was excited to see Radiata Stories because I notice that the background looks blurry while running on Odin 2's panel, and it really hurts my eyes if I start paying attention to it. I'm not sure if it's just the art style or if it's the ghosting issue that IPS has. Did you notice anything like that while you were playing? Couldn't really tell from the footage.
Weird, I don't remember getting the same slowdown in Valkyria profile 2 on a Odin 2 pro in that starting section. Running up the ship 's ramp on the right get some minor fps drop but nothing of that extent. I was using 3x (not 1x) but can't remember if it was opengl or vulkan. Are you using the performance mode? If yes that latest version of nethersx2 must have some big regression to get that slowdown on the O2 mini.
Hot Shots Golf demo** thanks so much for trying that game. Hard to tell if impact errors were player or CPU related. Was the machine running on performance mode or just standard?
First up, I really enjoy your videos, and this is not intended as a criticism (missed opportunity maybe?). But how is your intro not "Hi everyone, and welcome back to Joey's Retro handhelds. I'm Joey, and these are my retro handhelds". Maybe it's too obvious, but the first time I watched one of your videos that was what I expected as you did the intro, and I was just a tiny bit sad when it didn't happen :)
All of these games look pretty good, what is the main difference between the performance on Odin 2 Mini vs RP5 besides the brute strength? Maybe retroid can boost their clock speeds on the performance profile to perform better?
not sure what you're trying to say. the odin 2 uses a newer and more power chip from a different company. sd 865 already gets good performance, it's just less powerful than the 8gen2 of course increasing clock speed would get more performance but it'll also decrease battery life. Pretty sure rp5 already has power profiles as well.
@ the threshold for what make ps2 playable on android isn’t just the cpu ability but also codecs and other translation firmware/hardware. All I’m saying is I’d like to know what exactly is the bottleneck. Once we know this then as a consumer we can determine which chipset meets the demands vs which chipset will be able to meet the demands in the near future. Also, given the fact that the cooling gives more leeway in overclocking - I’d like a profile that maybe seriously diminishes battery life if it was able to modestly push performance.
