I liked the song before they did it, but not nearly as much. I know people who really didn't care for this song, but LOVE their take on it. SO beautiful, and great to hear Avi sing more, and Kevin's cello.
yeah, I didn't care much for the song when it first came out, and since then, the radio has made me kinda hate it. but PTX can make me love anything, & I love their arrangement. Kirstie is stunning, Avi is heartwrenching, and then Kevin comes in with the loveliest sweetest voice ever + his cello playing? I'm done.
I hated it when I first heard it. I don’t like A Great Big World (I think that’s their name?) and I don’t like Christina Aguilera either. Apparently I like the song, just not the people singing it originally lol

I cry every time. watching their faces and how genuine they are, their own personalities showing through the sadness. Mitch has disdain like "your loss", Avi has disappointment like "ILY and this is very bad news", Scott looking expectantly at subject like "no really, now's the time to say something come ONNN", and kirstie looking like she's all out of tears and really would still follow subject to the end of the earth if they wanted her to. Kevin's face is a bit harder to read (though he does register sadness) but it's probably because he is beat boxing AND playing cello. Anyway I like how genuine this feels. It really packs a punch.

I've probably listened to their cover of Say Something a couple hundred time,s it still doesn't fail to make me react, sometimes just goosebumps other times a few tears. It's the sound a of a heart breaking.

Hi Rob. Truly, truly a beautiful song. Noone does it like Pentatonix. I used to think that love was just another 4 letter word that begins with 'L'. A myth if you will. Butt, Oh, how I love this small group of people. Truly a talented bunch. Thought for a long time that one could chip a little ice off my heart. . . . .if one could find it.

Seriously, their performance of this song Live at the Orpheum (only if you haven't seen it already) is jaw dropping. It's not so much sad and emotive as just plain stunning. Ugh, it's just that words are sometimes inadequate to express what they do and how they do it. You don't have to react to it but I DO urge you to see it.

Why does that moment with Kevin so powerful. It tugs at my heart when he comes in at the end. I wouldn’t want to make you cry but it’s nice to know someone else feels the song as deeply as me. Yes, a lot of us feel this one. Thanks for sharing your reaction. A couple more suggestions: The first song I ever heard them do was "Somebody That I Used to Know", and it is still one of my favorites. Also, if you want to smile, check out "Thrift Shop" and/or "Gangnam Style". Both show their amazing talent and weird humor at the same time.

The only thing on par with Pentatonix version of "Say Something" was your beautiful, honest reaction. I felt exactly the same way the first time I saw the vid...and I'd heard the original tune by Great Big World. Avi (the bass singer) is, through no fault of anyone's, somewhat underutilized within the confines of Pentatonix. He's capable of more but...they need him to be a bass as his parts generally can't be covered when he leads. Scott can do certain parts but no one can handle his true bass notes in the group. When he does get to lead through parts of tunes like this one, it's all the more special. Anyway, so glad you liked this as much as so many of us do. Many gems await you in the Pentatonix catalog if you're up for it.
+Nostril Jacker I can't thank you enough for the thoughtful comment. I like your insight about Avi. Maybe it highlights how much they have learned and grown over the past few years (or however long ago this video was made).
Rob Reactor Agreed. Given why Avi was brought in (the trio already existed and the group needed a bass and a beatboxer to audition for "The Sing-Off"), he was there to perform a very specific function. They played their very specific roles throughout the show itself. As time has gone on in their recording career, they've seen the value of coloring outside the lines. They've figured out how to get Avi solo space and even how to let Kevin sing from time to time. It's interesting to watch them grow and even morph in certain respects as time passes.
