Damian, your review is excellent as always. I had the lens for a week, was disappointed with the optical quality of it and sent it back for a refund. At f3.5 to f5.6 the lens softened quickly beyond the centre and the smearing at the edges made it unusable for me. Between f5.6 and f8 it was satisfactory (bearing in mind that in my experience all Fuji lenses are excellent to stellar, so satisfactory is not acceptable to me) and beyond f11 I am sure I was detecting bad diffraction. I got roundly abused for sharing my opinion in another group but as you asked.... I especially upset one person because I said the quality was not good enough for me to confidently use the photos it took for clients. I have never been let down at all by the 10-24, or before that the 8-16f2.8 but this lens is too much money for what it is. In fact, after returning it I started looking at used prices of the 8-16f2.8 on places like MBP and came to the conclusion I'd rather pay a couple of hundred more (and build up my arm muscles) and get something I could rely on.

I think people get too territorial/ take it to personally because they love something... Forgetting that we don't all have the same experience for many reasons not least copy variation! I'm really glad you shared your experience!!

I got this lens just to play with, what type of paid work were you planning on using the wide angle?

Very pleasant photos with this lens from Nesebar. I photographed 18-120 in 2023 and somehow I didn’t achieve a similar effect :)

The NISI 9mm 2,8 (optically superior to the Laowa 9mm) is another option worth to consider.

I would buy a 10mm f2 AF WR in a heartbeat. This is just a bit to wide, expensive and a tad to slow for my taste.
My usecase is 5 establishing shots during a wedding or some cool shots during a performance from behind the performers into the crowd.
Small is a must, because it will be idle most of the time.
Meike and laowa have options. But I find them to expensive for manual focus. The 10-24 is 400 2nd hand. But is is bigger and F4

I bought it on the first day ! Why ? A lens I m waiting for as an landscape shooter. Combined with the 14mm or 18 and 23 or 35 mm a must have for me . Looking forward to see the 14mm as a WR lens .....

That would be rather interesting. I owned the 14mm at one point, was pretty nice

I tried it on loan from Fuji UK (excellent service). Enjoyed the lens and liked its sharpness overall. But - two buts. First, I seldom have a need for anything wider than 16mm (I have the 16/f2.8) and it is only because we have a couple of European city breaks coming up that I wanted something wider. Second, at £800 it is expensive (IMHO). I am considering the Samyang 12/f2 AF at £400. Not as wide, but wide enough and for a lens that will be seldom needed, a better value proposition. Thanks for you review.

@juleshorse9056 you might get the non-AF version second hand for 120 quid or so.

Ultra-wide and beyond. I know the theory, and you can get some cool shots but, in practice, I find it very hard to compose and get good shots myself. At least it's one focal length region where I don't have GAS, looking on the bright side 😄

I have the Laowa 9mm and 10mm cookie...the 9mm is fantastic, the 10mm is not so much. If the 8mm Fuji were 600 or less I would probably buy but for the current price I'm just not feeling it. The reported lack of peripheral sharpness and high aperture don't match the price range for me. ...and the compared to the Laowa's price/size/brightness... hmmm. Ill prob just wait for a rebate then get one. Thx!

Is the Samyang 8mm worthy of comparing it to?

    • @muttishelfer9122
      @muttishelfer9122 Рік тому

the Samyang is a fish-eye lens and manuell only.

Hey Rebecca, as mentioned it's fish eye so no but another comment mentioned how that lens offers more fun than this one for them!

Doesn't look worth 800 bucks. Dial it back to $399-$499 and it would be worth it. Definitely a pure novelty lens.
