California Air Tools 10020C Review

  • In this video I show you my California Air Tools 10020C compressor. This is a new addition for me and I am very happy that I purchased it. This compressor has a 2hp motor with dual piston oil-less pumps. The operating decibels are around 70db. That means that you can have the compressor running near you and it does not hurt your ears. I am not saying this is the perfect compressor for everyone and yes there are many other options out there. The fact that this unit is quality made means that it does cost more but in the long run it should outlast a cheaper compressor. For my situation the 10 gallon tank should be more than adequate for how much I use it. I would love to have a giant air compressor but I just do not have the space for it and the cost cannot be justified for how much I would use it. I do find myself using the air compressor more and more because it is not such a nuisance to run due to sound and because I set up a retractable hose reel to make hose management easier. I would encourage everyone to think about what they need/want out an air compressor before making a decision on which brand, size and capacity air compressor to buy. I would however recommend that if it is in your budget to purchase one that is a “quiet” model. That way it is not such a nuisance every time it does run.

    This seems like it would work well with an iwata lph80 1.8cfm spraygun. I seen how long you were laying on the air. I wanna use the set up to spray small firearm parts with cerakote. The other way I may go is with a VAL-Air-50. These are refrigerator quiet but also 2wice the price. "Money sometimes is always the problem" lol.

      @@zeal514 I end up buying one to since I last wrote this comment. I added a 33gallon auxiliary tank as well. The only thing I kind of don't like is the 30 psi spread on the kick on and kick off. I wish I could set it to kick on when it drops to 50-60 as opposed to 90. I know it can be adjusted but no matter there will still be a 30 psi spread. My sata 3000b is a 4cfm gun so this setup is more than enough. I end also ordering a iwata kawami4 but the air consumption (250-270L /per min which is about 8.8-9.5 cfm) is a bit high so I'll be restricted on bigger projects but hey its something.

    Can two of these be run simultaneously into a common hose? Do I just need check valves between them? They don't seem to like to start if there's any back pressure they have to work against.

    Very nice and complete review.
    QUESTION:
    Assuming no leaks in your hose/fittings, once this gets up to 125 PSI, and you don't use any air (like squeeze the air nozzle), will this hold the pressure at 125 PSI indefinitely ?

    • @scottwalker19
      @scottwalker19  Рік тому

      I am not sure if indefinitely is the right word. I'm sure it would hold it as long as you don't have leaks in any of the fittings or hoses. It is not recommended however due to the stress that puts on all those components when they are not in use.

    I have the same compressor, its good but i find the manifold really restricts air flow. Its not good for very heavy applications. But i keep it because the compressor is so quiet.

    • @scottwalker19
      @scottwalker19  4 роки тому +1

      I believe they updated the manifold system on the newer models. I could not say for sure but I know that my unit looks different than some of the older models I have seen. I do not have a lot of air tools at the moment I’ve basically just used it for air so far so I can not compare it to anything.

    • @pimpinpenz
      @pimpinpenz 4 роки тому

      Scott Walker Yes. I’ve owned mine for a while now. There’s a couple things I can say after owning it for a while that have happened with it. In the motors windings there is a thermal switch that failed on mine. I took it apart and removed the switch. It was quite the job having to disassemble the windings within the motor to find it. It’s just hardwired now but I’m not using my compressor all day long so I know it’s not getting hot enough to do any damage. Make sure you drain the tank daily. For some reason this compressor seems to collect more condensation than any of the compressors I’ve owned in the past. The only other issue I’ve had was with the manifold. Over time it started leaking so I had to take it apart and seal all the connections again with teflon tape. Other than what I’ve mentioned it’s been a great compressor. I live in Canada and when I bought this it was one of the only manufactures here making these quiet compressors. There’s more and more companies making them now. I think when mine fails (hopefully never) I’ll try out another manufactures offering.

    Can you access the governor valve and over ride it to gain a slightly higher PSI out of it? Thx

    • @scottwalker19
      @scottwalker19  Рік тому

      I am not that familiar with modifying air compressors. I have not done anything to change mine as it does what I needed to do. A higher psi might be needed for some things. The only thing I would need to change in my case would be the flow of air. That is usually what most people need more so than psi.

    • @scottwalker19

    Do you think the 10020C can handle light auto duty?
    Knock off wheel studs, using a sand disk to grind off rust from wheel hubs, knock off suspension bolts etc?

    • @scottwalker19
      @scottwalker19  Рік тому +1

      I'm not sure if it would be right for you. I think it can definitely handle an impact to takeoff wheels on vehicles but you may have to wait for the air compressor to fill back up after the second wheel. I am guessing but my mind tells me that an impact would only be able to have full power with maximum air flow. I think if you were using a high powered air grinder it may not be able to supply enough air. I have used it for a spraygun for painting and it seemed to do fine but definitely will run while using it. I think since it fills up so quickly that is definitely a bonus but if you're air tool requires a lot of flow it may struggle. Overall I think it's a fine balance. If you were just using it here and there for small things I sure sure it would be sufficient. If you were using it on a large project it may be slower than a full-size air compressor but also significantly less money. Hopefully that makes sense!

      @@scottwalker19 Thanks for your opinion and reply. Based on your comment I do think it will work for me, due to the intermittent behavior of my tasks. I think the longest interval that I would use it for would be about 20 seconds, which is enough time to get rust off a hub. Since I only do one corner at a time it would be 30-45 minutes until I get to the next corner. I'm not doing brakes every day either. Just working on my personal cars. Do you think there is enough capacity for 20 seconds?

    I'm a facilities maintenance manager and have 4 of these in my business. California air tools is not a good buy, they do not last long, when they blow up there is no customer service and no follow through on parts under warranty. They ghost you (its a California thing) and their is no phone number to call for a reason. It's a rip-off. We are now going to EMAX which is an American company made in America (not assembled in America from parts made in China)

    • @scottwalker19
      @scottwalker19  Рік тому

      Thanks for sharing! Ultimately, my decision was based on the fact that I was looking for a quiet unit at the time. I think a lot of other manufactures are expanding into the market of making them more quiet for residential users. I have not had any issues with mine. However, I do not use it all the time. I can tell you that if I use it anymore than I currently do, I would not purchase this unit and I would need a bigger more powerful compressor for sure. Also, a big thing people don't think about is duty cycle. I know California air has come out with a model very similar to this that is a 20 gallon instead of a 10 gallon and then the compressor pump is also rated for 100% duty cycle whereas this unit can only operate for about one hour before you should let it cool down, or if it gets too hot, it will shut itself off until it cools down.
