I think it would’ve been funny if at some point during the film, someone says “all right I get it!” when someone mentions that they still have a railway to run for the 10th time
I like to think that Gordon’s line in Will You Won’t You made the Fat Controller think Gordon needed help with the express and foreshadowing Rebecca’s introduction.
Personally, I think that if they wanted to do this specific story, they should have used DIESEL as the main character since, like Thomas, he tries to get to into the railway by trying to be something he's not! They could've given Thomas a role in the story by having him AND Diesel be the top candidates chosen, the two then COMPETE to be in the Railway show, only for neither engine to be chosen after the accident, with Sir Topham Hatt instead choosing Philip. Then later, when Gordon's safety valve needs replacing, Victor could approach Thomas to deliver it, only for him to suggest Diesel, seeing this as a chance for him to prove himself.
The Vicarstown tramway would've also been a cool nod to the one in real life that used to run around there, and the general Barrow area. From what I can tell, engines of the same, or a similar type to Flora _did_ work on it before they switched to electric, and then shut down. So it's not impossible for her to be one of them.
I think we can see Ashima pulling Annie & Clarabelle is a referance how the new engines end up pulling Annie & Clareabelle. and it all started with Emily lol.
You forgot to mention this in the goofs which is not prob a goof: When vinnie hits the electrical pile, it falls, but it is unknown how it didnt got on to vinnie and just fell onto the tracks.
Something I don't see people mention is the possible connection between this movie and the 2016 Rio Olympics the same year. Both are competitions where participants from across the world gather in one city to compete in different categories. Also, Thomas' paint scheme involves the colors yellow, white, and green, which when combined with his blue, form the colors of the Brazilian flag. Just something I noticed.
this has always annoyed me, everybody says that "thomas got fixed and went to the railway show" thomas wasnt fixed, his buffer beam was broken still, his paint was scratched and messed up, and he was the only engine at the time to go, despite not being fixed. its just annoyed how nobody picked up on this, thats all.
There was also animation error on czech DVD cover, where the engines at the Great race are not on tracks, but this problem is fixed on the english cover.
Back when this film came out, I confess I was excited for it. The idea of loads of trains coming together for a massive race sounded really fun, and I did enjoy the film. A major highlight was the first proper appearance of Flying Scotsman after the world was robbed of him in Series 3. They fact that he and Gordon were still brothers as per the books was also great.
Here's a Fact/Error in real life Vinnie's basis is Canadian, but in the movie he's portrayed with an American Accent, and according to his info thing, is from North America, which is continent not a country, but with the US Flag.
Man I hate some of the US voices in the CGI series, especially the ones in the main cast. No offence to fans who live in America, but they just don’t sound right to me.
Gordon's different streamlining was actually based on the streamlined variant of the Pennsylvania railroad K4 class. Which is the same locomotive that Nigel greasly based the LNER A1 pacifics on, and we all know Gordon is an A1. Do with that information as you will.
This movie had the excuse to potentially have Gordon, Spencer, Flying Scotsman, Mallard and Green Arrow in the same shot. But no, we made new characters cuz merchandise
Another really wierd thing is in the uk version of the movie Gordon says " Why would 'Sir Topham Hatt, want to take a little tank engine like you" but in the uk trailer he says "Why would 'The Fat controller' want to take a little tank engine like you" guessing the Sir Topham Hatt thing was a mistake that they were going to fix but didn't get to it. Also by the way "We still have a railway to run"
Reminds me of how in the UK dub of Hero of the Rails, both Spencer and the duke call him "the Fat Controller" to his face, as if the writers forgot they were allowed to call him "Sir Topham Hatt" in the UK dub.
@@fanofeverything30465 I don’t think he really minds it. He’s always called him the Fat Controller. Also I think you may have unintentionally referenced that stupid controversy about his name that went on in 2022 lol.

Uh, I think the Local was mentioned in Gordon Runs Dry. And with the film premiering before S20, I had a visual reference for the end of All in Vain. Come to think of it, all of the original 11 came from the mainland. How few were built on Sodor? I think Diesel ramming him may've been Philip's only interaction with other diesels before S21. Honestly, feels like Philip references that almost all the time. In fact, Italy was BWBA's only European country, where they'd even couple as such. I read a rewrite with Stepney in Emily's spot, and James confidently went not decorated believing his livery splendid enough as is. I have heard that Awdry's version of Thomas was never really about insecurity like model James. Shame they didn't utilize Hiro at the show. I thought something alikened Vinnie's bars to a football helmet. Speaking of Stephen, he led the parade with no foreshadowing. The rewrite I referenced had him train Henry for the strength event, which he actually won in the 3rd act. Its accompanying song Good Better Best is actually here on UA-cam. (Wonder how Murdoch would've fared...?) It also had Vinnie chase Philip down the race line, Gordon went after at boiler risk (Gordon even somewhat reacts to Vinnie before the narrator's last line), and Philip takes his spot for the actual race. Spencer was also swapped for the Emily and James reason. I highly recommend reading Chase and Don's Great Race rewrite on FFN. I saw Topham freeze too XD
Nah, I don’t think Adam can stand up to Tug’s level, but he doesn’t have to. As they said in the movie, it’s okay to be yourself. Though I would say that Adam is like the Irish Unlucky Tug in a sense.
you forgot to mention that every signalman in this movie is literally the fastest thing alive, and i personally think that gordon knew the lyrics to streamlining because he heard thomas singing it when he was arriving in knapford, we do see that thomas passed him in his dream sequence and everyone outside the dream that saw him speeding was like "bro what is he doing"
A few things I've noticed/little head canons that I noticed as we went along jot down as we go along: When Philip first says that Ashima's nothing but trouble, the music kind of sounds like an excerpt of Toby's theme. "He's quaintand old fashioned but careful and wise." I like to think that Flying Scotsman at the beginning and the Sodor precession to The Great Railway Show were stopped at the bridge. A little extra build-up/foreshadowing for Thomas jumping the bridge instead of stopping for it. Also would've been somewhat cathartic for the previous bridge stops. Heh! I like to think that Henry was the only legitimate Sodor Contestant in The Great Railway Show. the best-dressed engine competition was looking a little light so James and Emily were slotted in as filler contestants and weren't actually eligible to win (Let's face it, James was robbed). Gordon was only allowed to enter the Great Race as means for testing his streamlined casing. Percy was in a similar position to James and Emily, being a filler contestant in the shunting competition. However, after Gordon burst his "boiler" (it looks like it was just his dome that burst), Percy was eligible to win, as a consolation
Two things. 1. At the Bridge jump scene, Thomas is on the left track but when he lands he is on the right. 2. During the shunting contest, Thomas’ wheels and siderods don’t go the same speed as him.
I just rewatched the special last week and whilst I noticed a lot of these things on my own, there were definitely a lot of new things here I never even thought of or passed me by, definitely a nice new onsight on this nearly 8 year old special.
Great video! One more thing I would like to add: Vinnie technically doesn't exist - he is based on a Canadian National U-4-a, though only 5 of those locos were made (6400-6404) and he is numbered 6407. A #6407 did exist, but that was the U-4-b class which was owned by the Grand Truck Western. Not sure why they didn't number him 6400-6404.
While I find Vinnie to be okay, but what bugs me looking back is that they changed his nationality to just North American, but like Mexico is part of said continent and they also gave him a Bronx accent to match his persona. Would've made it interesting if they actually have two separate engines to represent each of their country of the same continent at the GRS. One from Canada (maybe a CP Royal Hudson) and the other from the US (like maybe Connor since he's based on a New York Central Hudson). Just a thought.
@@thesudriana016 I agree, I really hoped Vinnie would be representing Canada a lot more. And it would have been great to get a Royal Hudson! I think they’re a lot more popular than the U-4-a’s in terms of Canadian steam.
Can we have one of these videos on Journey Beyond Sodor too? That was pretty much the last piece of Thomas media I would call ‘good’ (granted by that point I was barely watching any of the show because I was far too old, but I remember liking JBS and wouldn’t mind finding out about some stuff I missed back then).
The Adventure Begins, Thomas proves to his friends why he is number one Sodor’s legend of the Lost Treasure, he proves why he is number one to Sir Topham Hatt The Great Race, Thomas proves why he is number one to himself
People have thought this could work with Gordon being the main character but I've also wondered if James could've worked as a main for this too since his whole thing is about wanting to be more special than he already is, heck this could've been a special about all three of Gordon James and Henry trying to deal with the issues they already have had (Gordon feeling second best to his family members Flying Scotsman and Spencer, James wanting to be even more splendid than before, and Henry coping with his mechanical flaws from before) and trying to overcome them. Rather than Percy backing out of the shunting competition due to being a wuss, maybe there could've been something where he got damaged severely by Vinnie's jerk behavior and Thomas having an actual reason to take part in the show. We still don't know who won The Strength Competition but I kinda feel like Vinnie might've been the most likely as he was ahead and didn't look like he was struggling compared to Frieda Shane and Henry. Everyone questions what Hiro would've been doing there since we saw Thomas almost crash into him but yeah it seems like they were trying to obscure his model and I think at the last minute they realized they didn't have a 5th member created for participating in the competition so figured to just use Hiro's model for an unknown character (can imagine it's a JNR D52) but didn't want to show the model so hid it as much as possible (heck his model's face was showing no emotion unlike the other engines). My guess in the order of who came in what place; 1st: Vinnie 2nd: Shane 3rd: Not-Hiro 4th: Frieda 5th: Henry Also something about the International's liveries: While Ashima's pink livery is meant todo with her being a girl and label her as being super attractive and Frieda being blue was to have a lol moment with Thomas confusing her for Gordon just because, with the other ten one half wear the liveries of their native countries (Axel Yong Bao Raul Ivan and Etienne) which has to do with showing the audience where they're from while the other half have liveries reflecting their basis' only (Vinnie Gina Carlos Shane though slightly a different green and Rajiv though with blue features instead of green) likely because they didn't think it was necessary to have all the engines need to show where they're from though didn't really know what to come up for them so just made them look more like their basis'. I wondered why they didn't show an African character for TGR before despite having North and South American European Asian and Oceanian engines but I think now because production on Nia was going on during 2016 her TTTE Wikia page says maybe they were waiting on showing a character from Africa for later after TGR (people were questioning why other French and Indian characters appeared despite having two of them already when there's other countries but while it's one thing having a French character (Etienne) despite Millie existing she wasn't created for this so that can be looked over but with Rajiv maybe they figured having another character from India due to Ashima being the main newbie. It seems like they could've and probably should've showed more of the International engines here besides Ashima and Vinnie but yeah maybe they were already planning ahead of time to do more with them around the world before the BWBA era (though we unfortunately got to only episodes set in India China Australia Brazil and Italy), would've been interesting to see more of Vinnie Frieda and Axel. I also think after The Great Railway Show was done Thomas got to talking to some of the Internationals as he was familiar with some in the BWBA era like Yong Bao Shane Raul Gina and presumably Ivan due to getting to shunt with him but didn't get a chance to meet Carlos or Rajiv since he wasn't that familiar with them afterwards, don't know with Axel or Etienne but as we know he had rather abrupt ways of meeting Vinnie and Frieda.
43:41 there is a goof you missed: Thomas is on the one track when he goes up the bridge, when he lands he's somehow on the other track. Unless he hit something at the top of the bridge, it's impossible for him to suddenly turn ever so slightly in the air. Of course the whole scene is stupid, but you get the point
I don’t really like the concept of the Great Race being a musical, because it feels to Disney for me. Not that Disney is bad at musicals, but Thomas and friends just doesn’t really fit that style in my opinion. I would’ve liked it if they were like one or two songs like “Full of surprises” and “You can only be you”

I always speculated that in the race scene that the engines were placed on the shorter sections of track in comparison of their speed. Eg, Gordon is the slowest of the 5 and is on the inner track (shortest) and Etienne the fastest is on the outer track (longest) to make the race a bit fairer between the engines
Dear Mr ThomasTheorist , at 44:40, it shows Den, Dart, and Paxton on top of sandbags, which implies that cranky lifted them onto the sandbags. I am extremely disappointed. But in all seriousness, a very good video, and I would love to see more of these.
Great video as always! Love the in-depth analysis and research that went into it. I read through almost all the comments and have to mention one thing though that I didn't find anyone pointing out: Gordon in streamlining wouldn't look like Spencer, they are technically related as cousins, but not the same class. The A4s never were out of streamlining, the design would've needed to be altered quite a bit to be unstreamlined - wasn't as easy as it was with the Princess Coronation Class where one could tell by the slightly sloped smokebox top if they ever were streamlined or not. The A3s were mostly rebuilt A1s (see Flying Scotsman) and were never intended to be streamlined. So basically the producers of the movie chose whatever they thought suited an A1 best if it was streamlined given the whole loco is unaltered under the streamlined casing.
I agree with the idea of Gordon should have been the star of this movie. There are a few movies in this franchise that should have been about different characters other than Thomas. Examples: Great Race, Gordon; Journey Beyond Sodor, Henry; Royal Engine, Edward. Edit: This makes me wish we had three different movies starring the one of the three railway engines
I personally love the great race and I love how they added the little fantasy of Streamlining without going overboard like BWBA. I also like to thing that in an alternate universe Gordon won by a mile

there’s another animation error: in the scene where the international engines get back on the ferry, and ashima is reversin into thomas, if you look at axel, his front pony truck is completely gone, makin him look like he’s floatin
Could you do Journey Beyond Sodor next? PS, you missed an error in the scene where Topham says "we still have a railway to run." Right after, Henry whistles but is Edward's and he's not seen in the yard.
i think you missed out one thing in ‘Will you won’t you’ because there is a scene where emily leaves knapford but her coaches are moving by themselves at 8:10
9:29 they also use Percy’s US Voice for this song. However, that must be a goof, because they use his uk voice for be who you are and go far. I think they use Emily’s US Voice becuase her Uk voice actor isn’t good at singing in a Scottish accent. Charlie and Scruff also have thier us voices
You know when the fat controller is viewing axel and looks impressed? Well axel is an Atlantic giving a call back from Atlantic scandal when he wanted an Atlantic and got Henry.
I wanna say a few things 1 how would shane even get to the show since he's broad gauge at 1600 mm compared to standard gauge at 1435 mm 2 why in the introduction to the Great railway show characters, vinnie is depicted with a american flag when Vinnie is Canadian National Railway No. 6400 in it's 1939 Royal Tour blue livery (which is preserved) 3 technically Phillip is a american diesel, specifically a PRR A6 diesel boxcab overall great video 👍
Regaining is possible. Two Jintys were converted to 1600 mm when the LMS sent them to Northern Ireland for work on the NCC and the HS4000 Kestrel was regauged too after being sold to Soviet Railways.
6:40 actually sense gordon is the experimental engine for his class, he is the first, that means that he’s the oldest brother, that probably means he created the catch phrase first.

34:39 Smoke deflector: Hi fryda Frieda: MY NAME IS FRIEDA
The Vicarstown tramway would've also been a cool nod to the one in real life that used to run around there, and the general Barrow area. From what I can tell, engines of the same, or a similar type to Flora _did_ work on it before they switched to electric, and then shut down. So it's not impossible for her to be one of them.
I think we can see Ashima pulling Annie & Clarabelle is a referance how the new engines end up pulling Annie & Clareabelle. and it all started with Emily lol.
44:01 Henry literally clipped through the multiverse.
Loved how you incorporated the PBS funding screen of Thomas and Friends at the start of the video.
Vinnie could’ve been a New York central locomotive since in one of the shorts Vinnie was in NY
@@Swag_K1RBY But he's very intentionally based on a CNR unit.
He’s implied to be Canadian built, but shipped to the U.S., to work. At least that’s what I believe is going on.
The way sir topham scolds Thomas's full name, "thomas the tank engine," is just our parents scolding our name when they're angry
Percy and James also had their US voices in the UK dub at some points.
It’s so weird that this video comes out (live rn) while I’m starting to get into The Great Race again
Since Sir Topham Hatt is his actual name this fortunately doesn’t really stick out to me.
Reminds me of how in the UK dub of Hero of the Rails, both Spencer and the duke call him "the Fat Controller" to his face, as if the writers forgot they were allowed to call him "Sir Topham Hatt" in the UK dub.
Maybe it's because he's standing there and it's considered dishonorable to call him fat to his face
@@fanofeverything30465 I don’t think he really minds it. He’s always called him the Fat Controller. Also I think you may have unintentionally referenced that stupid controversy about his name that went on in 2022 lol.
@@joshuaW5621 What's all that about? Was the fandom being hypocritical AGAIN!? (Excuse the full caps That's just for emtherse since UA-cam doesn't have a bold option)
(Wonder how Murdoch would've fared...?)
It also had Vinnie chase Philip down the race line, Gordon went after at boiler risk (Gordon even somewhat reacts to Vinnie before the narrator's last line), and Philip takes his spot for the actual race. Spencer was also swapped for the Emily and James reason. I highly recommend reading Chase and Don's Great Race rewrite on FFN.
I saw Topham freeze too XD
I think it came out the same day as Sidney Sings in the UK.
I swear this guys the next unlucky tug
I Dont think they are more Adams working for this channel 😂😂😂😂
Nah, I don’t think Adam can stand up to Tug’s level, but he doesn’t have to. As they said in the movie, it’s okay to be yourself. Though I would say that Adam is like the Irish Unlucky Tug in a sense.
@@joshuaW5621 true
I’m half convinced Adam is better.
If The Unlucky Tug hadn't been able to come back The Thomas Theorist might have been the fandom's new Unlucky Tug
1:01 that’s not true. It was first mentioned in Gordon Runs Dry. Gordon even explains that local trains stop at every station.
43:41 you missed a goof on the bridge. Thomas jumps from the left track and lands on the right track.
I saw a fun piece of fanart on Tumblr of Spencer opening his smokebox. It looked like he was unhinging his jaw.
you forgot to mention that every signalman in this movie is literally the fastest thing alive, and i personally think that gordon knew the lyrics to streamlining because he heard thomas singing it when he was arriving in knapford, we do see that thomas passed him in his dream sequence and everyone outside the dream that saw him speeding was like "bro what is he doing"
A few things I've noticed/little head canons that I noticed as we went along jot down as we go along:
When Philip first says that Ashima's nothing but trouble, the music kind of sounds like an excerpt of Toby's theme. "He's quaintand old fashioned but careful and wise."
I like to think that Flying Scotsman at the beginning and the Sodor precession to The Great Railway Show were stopped at the bridge.
I always kinda thought it weird how Henry shouted “That’s my boy.” Especially since in my opinion he and Thomas don’t that much of a dynamic.
Two things.
1. At the Bridge jump scene, Thomas is on the left track but when he lands he is on the right.
2. During the shunting contest, Thomas’ wheels and siderods don’t go the same speed as him.
I can never escape this movie can I, or should I say, this movie can never escape me
I just rewatched the special last week and whilst I noticed a lot of these things on my own, there were definitely a lot of new things here I never even thought of or passed me by, definitely a nice new onsight on this nearly 8 year old special.
Great video! One more thing I would like to add:
Vinnie technically doesn't exist - he is based on a Canadian National U-4-a, though only 5 of those locos were made (6400-6404) and he is numbered 6407.
Prehabs it's an in-joke like with Donald and Douglas
13:48
HOW did they not derail from that!
Fun fact: The flag on Freida is that of the Brabant Revolution of 1789-1790
You got me an idea with "Will You Won't You" being the song that they sing when they make it to the railway show
The Adventure Begins, Thomas proves to his friends why he is number one
Sodor’s legend of the Lost Treasure, he proves why he is number one to Sir Topham Hatt
The Great Race, Thomas proves why he is number one to himself
As a train geek theater major I want to say one thing. This video made my day, I have never subscribed so fast.
And thus one of my favorite ships was born! I love the dynamic between Thomas and Ashima!
We still don't know who won The Strength Competition but I kinda feel like Vinnie might've been the most likely as he was ahead and didn't look like he was struggling compared to Frieda Shane and Henry. Everyone questions what Hiro would've been doing there since we saw Thomas almost crash into him but yeah it seems like they were trying to obscure his model and I think at the last minute they realized they didn't have a 5th member created for participating in the competition so figured to just use Hiro's model for an unknown character (can imagine it's a JNR D52) but didn't want to show the model so hid it as much as possible (heck his model's face was showing no emotion unlike the other engines). My guess in the order of who came in what place;
1st: Vinnie
2nd: Shane
3rd: Not-Hiro
4th: Frieda
5th: Henry
Also something about the International's liveries: While Ashima's pink livery is meant todo with her being a girl and label her as being super attractive and Frieda being blue was to have a lol moment with Thomas confusing her for Gordon just because, with the other ten one half wear the liveries of their native countries (Axel Yong Bao Raul Ivan and Etienne) which has to do with showing the audience where they're from while the other half have liveries reflecting their basis' only (Vinnie Gina Carlos Shane though slightly a different green and Rajiv though with blue features instead of green) likely because they didn't think it was necessary to have all the engines need to show where they're from though didn't really know what to come up for them so just made them look more like their basis'.
✨ the king has posted ✨
CGI Vicarstown is based on St. Pancras? No one tell Gordon that!
I would’ve liked it if they were like one or two songs like “Full of surprises” and “You can only be you”
you just hate fun😤

Wow. Lots of interesting facts on Great Race. I see this movie has change Thomas afterwards.
29:32 you know this was done in the following Thomas And Friends Special called “Journey Beyond Sodor”.
And I love the CGI water mill theme that they used the memories of the classic series water mill theme in the great race
I agree with the idea of Gordon should have been the star of this movie. There are a few movies in this franchise that should have been about different characters other than Thomas.
Examples: Great Race, Gordon; Journey Beyond Sodor, Henry;
Royal Engine, Edward.
Edit: This makes me wish we had three different movies starring the one of the three railway engines
I personally love the great race and I love how they added the little fantasy of Streamlining without going overboard like BWBA. I also like to thing that in an alternate universe Gordon won by a mile
37:18 guys at this part where Henry said to Thomas "that's my boy!" If you go to the us version you can hear him also saying that but you can't hear it a little bit
This video was really good! I’d love to see something like this again for Journey Beyond Sodor or something!
Couldn’t he possible be regauged to fit on British track? The HS4000 Kestrel was regauged when he was sold the Soviet Railways.
I think Gordon and Flying Scotsman knowing each other may be a reference to the RWS version of Tender Engines.
Can't believe you missed the fact that when Thomas jumps the bridge he's on the outermost track, but when he lands, he's now on the innermost track.
I would love to see this as a series, and the thing I don't like about this movie is all the potential it had. Also I always saw Vinnie's bars as a dog's muzzle
Personally, I would prefer Edward to be the one carrying the Sodor flag over Philip, in the really useful party episode style
So Gordon's impatients is his, his driver and fireman's fault and his fault for not waiting
there’s another animation error: in the scene where the international engines get back on the ferry, and ashima is reversin into thomas, if you look at axel, his front pony truck is completely gone, makin him look like he’s floatin
Could you do Journey Beyond Sodor next?
PS, you missed an error in the scene where Topham says "we still have a railway to run." Right after, Henry whistles but is Edward's and he's not seen in the yard.
this was great but sir how dare you not ask me to help you with the musical bit😂
43:59 henry really likes nature
i think you missed out one thing in ‘Will you won’t you’ because there is a scene where emily leaves knapford but her coaches are moving by themselves at 8:10
9:29 they also use Percy’s US Voice for this song.
23:56 as an Indian person i can confirm that bit of music at the end of indian string instruments is very accurate
Omg how did i not realise that? 2:41
I wanna say a few things
1 how would shane even get to the show since he's broad gauge at 1600 mm compared to standard gauge at 1435 mm
2 why in the introduction to the Great railway show characters, vinnie is depicted with a american flag when Vinnie is Canadian National Railway No. 6400 in it's 1939 Royal Tour blue livery (which is preserved)
3 technically Phillip is a american diesel, specifically a PRR A6 diesel boxcab
overall great video 👍
Regaining is possible. Two Jintys were converted to 1600 mm when the LMS sent them to Northern Ireland for work on the NCC and the HS4000 Kestrel was regauged too after being sold to Soviet Railways.
I don’t think Gordon has any chance to win the race unless Spencer was the one to forget his safety valve and not him and Etienne breaks down.
Thomas also jumps the bridge from the left track and lands on the right
I want this for all the Thomas movies, Lost Treasure would be an amazing fit for this
Loved this :D
Very well made. I hope to see your Journey Beyond Sodor breakdown as soon as, because I've always been curious about the bts details of it
6:40 actually sense gordon is the experimental engine for his class, he is the first, that means that he’s the oldest brother, that probably means he created the catch phrase first.
Wait because this actually went hard
