    Hi from Steven in Green Bay. GO PACKERS!! LOL!! I have lived in G.B. ALL MY LIFE for the past 62 years. And this original Milwaukee Road used to run past my grade school at St. Jude Catholic Church on Division St. And only 1/2 block North of the Double intersection of Fisk St. (N-S), and Dousman St. (E-W). back in 1966 to 1974 when the M.R. STILL! used EMD F7A and B diesels, and GP7s . Coupled to the double freight with regular freight cars in front and their rib sided caboose. And the 2nd half with loaded iron ore cars, or Taconic pellets with their caboose. But going slow Southbound because they were approaching the switchyard only 2 miles away by 12th St. But they would cut uff the rear hoppers and leave them parked from Dousman St. Up to the GB&W Diamond by Oneida St. Then the diesels returned for the ore cars. And as the F7s started slowly, they pulled out the slack of all those ore cars, and the smashing of the couplers was just like a giant Slinky. And the sound could be heard all over from a 3 mile radius north up to my old house, and South to 9th Street!!!!! Thus I was surrounded by train sounds. But in 1980 when the M.R. was bancrupt, their Northern Section was bought by the ELS But with some large grants and loans from the U.S. Government, so that they repaired the old light rails, and washed out ballast so that they could run with Bigger diesels like the used SD-40-2 Diesels, and much heavier freight cars that weigh over 100 tons to 143 ton coal cars.. But those repairs have also worn out after the past 40 Years!! Plus the states of WI. AND MI. The MI. Section was from Iron Mountain north to the end of the line in Ontonogan. But there was a small section that formerly connected to the SOO LINE RR that went to the Keeweenaw Peninsula by the Twin towns of Houghton and Hancock, which was lastly the route of the combined passenger train the "COPPER COUNTRY LIMITED" until 1968. Then nearly 28 years later by 1996 it was controlled by the former WISCONSIN CENTRAL. And since 2001 the ELS has an EMD Streamliner F.P.7.A. Number 600, that is really 4 feet longer than a regular F7a, because the F.P.7 SERIES contains a larger water tank for the steam heat in the coaches and both for the extremely cold weather in the U.P., ....AND....The much longer distance from Chicago Northward to Houghton and Hancock. Ironically this longer FP7A is now called 600. But was used on the WSORR Regional rr in Madison and Janesville and Prairie du chein and many small towns formerly served also by M.R., and called 71; but 1st built in 1951 for the previous "C.C.L." and "CHIPPEWA" with number 96-A, and with B unit 96b and other FP7A 96-C that was saved and used in Indiana, but later used for spare parts which needs a seriously major rebuilding because it is very rusty. Thus perhaps there might be a possibility of rebuilding the 96-C. And repainting with the Authentic orange paint. And get some Authentic "HIWATHA " coaches for an Authentic Excursion over the Historic rails of the M.R....And also excursions on other railroads too!!!!! So I pray to GOD it will happen soon especially in 2025 on the 90th anniversary of the Original 1935 HIAWATHA POWERED by the famous Streamliner ALCO 4-4-2 and Numbers 1 to 4. Thus from now in 2022, Until 2035 there are 13 years left. So....ALL ABOARD HIAWATHA 100, HOORAY!!!!! From Steven Solway. Green Bay, WI. U.S.A. HAPPY EASTER SUNDAY APRIL 17, 2022A.D.!! GOD BLESS THE U.S.A 🇺🇸 🙌 🙏 ❤!!!!! ALLELUIA!!!!! AMEN 🇮🇱🙏!!!!! PRAY FOR PEACE IN UKRAINE 🇺🇦!!!!! AND VICTORY OVER EVIL RUSSIA. AMEN 🇮🇱 🙏 🙏 🙏!!!!!

    The Escanaba & Lake Superior RR is mostly comprised of former Milwaukee Road track as well as some former Chicago & Northwestern. Back in the 1970's, Milwaukee Road and C&NW pooled iron ore trains from local mines on their routes and delivered to Escanaba for loading onto ships. The Milwaukee Road abandoned their routes north out of Milwaukee thru Green Bay to Channing, MI and points north I believe in 1980 when the entire Milwaukee Road system was reorganized to try to keep its profitable routes following their final bankruptcy in 1977. This was the largest systematic abandonment of a transcontinental railroad as their 10,000 mile system was nearly cut in half. They once stretched from Chicago to Tacoma, WA with a southeastern leg reaching Louiville, KY. Much of their demise was due to poor debt management and unrealized revenue projections as they were the last ones to reach the West in 1909. However, had management made proper decisions thru the 1960's and '70's, there's a chance they could have survived. Many argue the reason as to why management made such poor decisions; some believing it was doomed to fail while others see possible evidence of undermining from within by rival Burlington Northern as several former BN execs made their way into Milwaukee Road management in the 1970's. Anyhow, you can recognize former Milwaukee Road tracks on the ELS with the switch stands along the route. Milwaukee Road Switch stands are very noticeable with their red and white chevron style target shields. Some of them have been replaced but most of them are still there along the route. ELS 501 with the GM markings is former Milwaukee Road #22, acquired new in 1973 and one if the last major purchases by the Milwaukee.

      You seem like the person to ask. What is ELS route now? Point A to point B? Do they go to Escanaba or start there? to where

    • @stephensaasen8589
      @stephensaasen8589 Рік тому +1

      @@tomp8871 I don't know alot about the E&LS. I watch Jason Asselin's You Tube Channel and that's where I get much of my info. I've heard him mention their presence in Green Bay. So I'd venture to guess they run from Green Bay as far north as Channing on a regular basis. They have a big presence in Escanaba/Wells. Not sure how they route the trains. The line from Green Bay to Channing is former Milwaukee Road and the lines to Escanaba are former Chicago & Northwestern. This system was jointly run by the Milwaukee and C&NW years ago in the iron ore hauling days. Milwaukee tended to gather the ore and C&NW took the ore to the docks at Escanaba. As far as I am aware, E&LS owns lines north of Channing but I think for the most part they are inactive and used for car storage. I don't know if E&LS runs all the way to Milwaukee or another carrier takes freight from Green Bay to Milwaukee.

    Those bars are called joint bars. Allows for sections of rail to be bolted together. Easier then laying a new section of ribbon rail. I've put together many lines like that .

    Railway fish plate, also called rail joint, splice bar or joint bar, is a metal bar that is used to the connect end of two rails by fish bolts. As the connection part between two rails, railway fish plate is used in combination with the steel rail.

    No Steve. That crossing is protected by track motion detection. An AC voltage sent down the rails to a shunt. If the motion of the detection stops changing the , impedance calculator circuits for calculating the track impedance, phase detector circuits for detecting the phase angle between the voltage and current in the logic boards in the box next to the crossing. the logic will cancel the warning signal. The Rail Joint that your looking at the Island circuit insulated Joint, from that point to the other end of the crossing there is another pair of Joints that make up the Island circuit, the part that the road cross the tracks. The area beyond towards the SHUNT is called the Detection circuit. On a high speed section of track the shunt is placed a calculated distance away from the Island circuit section. The logic boards can calculate train Speed to set the warnings. Train going slow. or fast the gates will go down at the right time. Another great rr video. Thank you

    The whole Rail Line is in Bad shape the railroad doesn't do a good job of rail maintenance in winter months they have a lot of derailments. The Blue SD 40-2 was a Demonstrator Engine from General Motors theses Engine's were tested by Railroads to see if they were interested in purchasing or leasing that Engine model...

      The blue engine is not a demonstrator. It was a lease engine from EMD. It was originally built for the Milwaukee Road in 1973 as evidenced by the shorter lower capacity fuel tank and bell mounted behind the cab on the right side. Its original number was 22 for Milwaukee Road. This and some of the other SD40-2's were returned to GM I believe because the Milwaukee may have still owed debt against them. This and another Milwaukee unit were painted blue and leased by GM for many years to several railroads.
