THIS Setting Will SLOW DOWN Your Fujifilm Camera!

- Fujifilm cameras contain a number of image enhancement settings, such as sharpness, tonal range, grain, color chrome, etc. But one setting will cause your camera to take considerably longer to save your photos to the SD card: Clarity.

I follow many channels, but you are the only one who explains all the modes of Fujifilm's menu. Congratulations, great work! Thanks!
This is the best 3-4 min. I have spent today! Thanks!
Wow!! These videos are PRICELESS!!! I just made the switch (don't tell Nikon) to Fuji and bought the X-T5. I just spent the last couple of days browsing through your channel. I can't thank you enough for compressing days or weeks of familiarization into just a few hours. Thanks so much for all the work you put into these tutorials.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! It was doing my head in for so long. I couldn't work out what I changed that slowed my camera down so much and you answered it in this short video. Forever grateful that you take the time to help us newbies to Fujifilm Cheers from down under.
Always helpful tips and info. Thanks for doing what you do !!!
Thanks for sharing this quick tip! Appreciate the knowledge dump you provide the Fuji community
Just got my X-T5 over the weekend (after upgrading from a broken X-T2) and have been watching your videos. MANNNNNNNNN, let me tell you, I have yet to find anyone who is as concise, articulate and knowledgeable as you. Always straight to the point, without any unnecessary additions to your videos. Just amazing. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. You gained a new follower.
Excellent video. This is a good example of why I like your channel, essential information delivered succinctly. Thank you!
Excellent insight and superb video. Thanks, Chris.
VERY helpful. Thank you Chris!
Thanks for including the bit about shooting drive modes and clarity
A very good hint. Thank you very much for that. Great video again.
Thanks for this. I have been using some film recipes and noticed some recipes had lag and this was the issue.
same here. Didn´t really mind, but could not figure out (also did not reserach :) which setting was causing it
A Great thanks from Paris - France. Been struggling with this delay for days bought expensive SD cards ... and that was exactly this clarity thing called "netteté" in French that's creating this f... delay You really made my day and overall your videos are the best always passionate precise fun .... Great job 👍
So helpful! Thank you!
Very very helpful advice. Thank you!
Fascinating... Thanks Chris... I never touch those choices... only shoot RAW and adjust in post 🙂
Always great advice.... So knowledgeable.....📷👌
I'm really enjoying these short, sweet, and to the point videos. I'm also oh-so-curious about the opening scene with you about to jump off a building??!! One thought for another short video - my battery life doesn't seem as good as it should be on my XT5. I'm wondering if there are any settings that are eating up the power that I could adjust.
Thank you! It was useful!
I shoot CH or CL 95% of the time, so hadn't encountered this, but; back in my x-t2 days I inadvertantly engaged Anti-flicker mode & that slowed my burst rate dramatically.
Thank you, Chris. Entertainment + Knowledge!
You have helped me a lot!
Thanks for sharing another greate, entertaining and informative video.
Thank you so much!!!! This makes my X-Pro3 more powerful!!!
An very usefull tip, like in your other videos. Great work and Thanks a lot!
Nice tip! Thanks alot🎉
Great tip as always 👌Another one I painfully discovered that affects the burst mode is the FLICKER REDUCTION SWITCH. With this turned ON, my X-Pro3 wouldn't be able to go faster than 5.7fps using the Mech Shutter, and not more than 10fps using the Electronic Shutter, when X-Pro3's MS & ES peaks to 11fps and 20fps respectively.
My issue solved! Thanks!
Thank you, Chris!
Thank you Chris!
I figured this out about a month ago. Had to really mess with things to narrow down which setting was doing it!
Also: lots of film sim recipes calls for clarity to be adjusted
How on freakin earth do you keep finding new things about these Fujis! Omg, so helpful. Are you going to be doing an update on the latest firmware updates? Wanted to know if you could see any noticeable differences after updating the 16-55 lenses for aperture smoothening.
Great tip thank you
Amazing. Working with filmsimulation almost for one image to get the "feeling" and then shoot with no filmsimulation to stay fast. Now much better. Do you have a tip for the GFX as well? As there is no "clarity" to be turned off?
it might be the 1st video reveal the impact of clartiy non zero setting. Thank you. I found it not long after using my 1st digital mirrorless camera Fujifilm X-T3. Luckily I am not a fan of SOOC / in camera film simulation.
Could you please make a video on each of these settings and how it affects the photo...... thank you
I do prefer my jpegs ooc most of the time (shooting raw+fine) and therefore clarity setting is fine for me usually since it makes a real difference to the outcome. If quicker shooting time is needed I simply switch it off in my Q-menue and process/add it afterwards (in camera raw development )
I was wondering what was causing that. I had a cool black and white setting and part of it was clarity -1 or something and every time I 2 K a shot it would delay it. So, I will just go ahead and put it back to zero and then in post-production I could always added subtract a little Clarity it's that simple. Thanks again for finding a glitch that befuddled me thank you.
THANK YOU SIR 🙏
And I thought it's just the X-T4 with clarity. Thanks Chris!
this boggled my mind for so long when I got my fuji first… it annoys me to no end that there EXISTS the possibility to show warning boxes in parts of the menu options, but they simply couldn‘t be bothered to add some very much needed ones - like for the extreme performance slowdown when clarity is used…
You should have read the manual first then you would’ve known.
You're the sort of effervescent chap who people are really glad to see around. Thanks for doing what you do, and for helping me make my X-T5 Robin to my Batman!
Thanks
Thanks 🙏
have you ever come across a bug where sometimes, while in the stills mode, the camera randomly switches to video mode? I'm using an XT - 3.
Wish I had watched this weeks ago. I couldn’t figure out what I had done to slow down my X-S20. Fujifilm rep was in the store one day and fixed it instantly. He explained that this problem requires really diving deep into the online manual to find. They should add a warning when you change the Clarity setting.
Good fix.
that's clear!
Omfgggg I didn’t know this no wonder?!!! thanks so much
You’re the best!
Should i buy een second hand Xh1 or new xh2.
I own a x t3 with 150 600 .
Thx
I use this setting a lot, you can get beautiful results with it cranked both up and down - but I do it in the Fujifilm X Raw studio, where I can afford to wait a moment.
I shoot with a lot of different film recipes, and many of them have CLARITY set to a non-zero value. I have never found this to be an inhibiting factor except when shooting events-in which case I simply pick a recipe that doesn't use clarity, or I set it to 0 as you suggest. But in most of my street and landscape shooting, I actually kind of like being forced to slow down a bit. When I take a film camera out, I have to take time to advance the film after each shot, and this takes about the same amount of time. So it actually puts me more in the moment of shooting, and lets me be a little more purposeful about each shot I take. That said, this is a very important video exactly because Fujifilm does not adequately warn people about this and it can be a real head scratcher if you're new to Fuji (or to the X-Trans IV processor and beyond). So once again, THANK YOU for providing a valuable service to the Fuji community!
If I want to temporarily disable Clarity I choose a drive mode. I then don't have to remember to enable it again.
@@fredbloggs545Yes! CL or CH if you really don't want to miss the moment, then back to single when you can afford to wait. All in the name of less post-processing.
It took me forever to figure that out and it was so frustrating.
Once I did I couldn't believe they hadn't fixed it yet
Either fix it or leave it off the camera. Telling people not to use it is a ridiculous approach
One thing I’ve noticed is that the X-T5 seems to perform the clarity adjustment a bit faster than the X100V. Maybe 30% faster. Can you test and confirm? Maybe make it a short. XT4 vs XT5 (or any other 26mp X camera with clarity)
I ran into that a long time ago. I haven't move clarity off 0 since.
That explains why, when I messed around with film recipes the camera became unusable.
Apart from CL and CH. Is there any other setting that will disable Clarity?
You want fast, set Clarity to 0.
And for JPEG - which is pretty much the point of shooting with Fujifilm in the first place instead of dicking around with RAW images later (which can be done with nearly any camera system!) - you can always just change the Clarity setting on individual images later right in the camera with 'RAW Conversion' when in the Play mode. Or change Clarity later with your computer using the free Fujifilm X RAW Studio software for individual or batch photos.
Thanks a lot for posting this video. However, I have a question. I can't find Clarity as an option in the menu of either my X-T2 or X-T3, both of which have the current firmware. I don't even see it in manual. Has clarity been eliminated as a menu item? Thanks!
I have the X-T3 so no clarity option in the menu and I still run into this issue.
Thanks for this video. Unfortunately I learned this lesson the hard way.
Last year I took a street photography workshop. My newly acquired XT4 took, what seemed to me, an ungodly period to write to the card. There were two options. 1st, whenever the camera is doing something unwanted I reset to the orig Factory settings and start all over. 2nd, take the camera back to the store for help. That is why we support brick & motar stores. I went to B&H and the problem was quickly solved.
As a side note. I have no idea how the clarity setting was activated. I certainly didn’t do it. I didn’t lend the camera to anybody. A camera goblin must have done it. I now know don’t activate this setting.

fuji camera photo and video size is too big compared to iPhone, do you recommend I convert JPG->HEIF, video to Apple HEVC, before import them to Photos iCloud?
I find that ODD that not only Fujifilm haven't done anything to change it, they don't even seem to acknowledge that it's a thing. I am always baffled by how many tiny QOL changes major manufacturers like Fujifilm could add to their cameras and by doing just that could attract so many more users to their systems. And it's not like it is something major. In this particular case, just put "Clarity" further down in the menu and add a tiny disclaimer that it affects performance - done. But for some reason consumers are seen as this angry mob nowadays, that can't think for themselves, which only reinforces this idea even more. Odd world we live in.
Fujifilm definitely knows about this -- see my previous post. Clarity as it turns out is a processing hog, that's just the nature of it.
They definitely know about it if it’s disabled completely in burst mode.
It’s clearly the processor not coping with the demand on ‘adding clarity’. It’s turned into another Fuji oxymoron. Why have it if you’re being told to keep it switched off? You can have all this customisation, but not this and this, or that and that etc. Other brands have processors that can handle all combos of settings.
Good tip

The clarity setting won't transfer to the RAW file though right? Just the JPEG's?
Hi I have set my Clarity to 0 and the camera is still taking a while to transfer the image to card, what could be the other issue?
So, what would Clarity be aim to ??? thanks to anyone who can explain.
Thoughts on Lightroom vs capture one? I'm new to editing in post. Shooting on XT4. I edit videos using Power Director. They have Photo Director, but doubt that is the best option. Thanks for your videos. They have been helpful
Lightroom for the cataloging and C1 for the perceived “worms” that some users complain about LR
@@nurd45
Those "some" users are the ones too heavy handed with the sharpening slider...
yesssss, it tooks me pair of hours searching in internet till i found the problem with the recipes
My clarity is set to 0 but it still shows the “storing”, any guess on whats happening?
This begs the question why would Fuji add clarity to its film sim menus? It wont affect me however, as my ancient X-T20 doesnt have clarity :(
Long time viewer, first time commenter! Is this issue fixed at all by having an sd card with a super fast read/write speed or is it a persistent issue regardless of card?
Most probably not, the size of the file isn't changing, the processing of the clarity is what's taking the extra time
It does not matter how fast the sd card is, it will still take the same time.
The same with Noise Reduction...
It’s even worse in Dutch. I had multiple questions. “Storing” is the Dutch word for…. Malfunction. Yes, there you go!
please add clarity to my x-t3
Clarity means sharpness?
OMG that one dumb setting! I set up custom recipe that had clarity enabled, just because I was following a film sim recipe. It took me MONTHS to put to and two together. I kind of wish they’d just firmware update that entire function out of the system as a whole.
Clarity is a very powerful addition to jpeg shooting. It is not "dumb".
Wouldn't it be nice if those Fuji guys just invented a camera without all the over done rubbish that's burried deep in our cameras and just produce an ALL manual camera a bit like the film days where we were in control not the camera! Sadly if you want that experience it comes with a large price tag and it's not Fuji. I shoot only in manual on my Fuji XH1 and I'm still amazed at how many settings with in this camera that want to get in the way of me taking photos. The really anoying one was Quick menu, it took ages to find out how to disable this button (again hidden & burried under another setting).
Makes me wonder what exactly is happening under the hood to cause that delay.
I love Fujifilm cameras, but it's insane that in 2024 there are settings that slow the camera down so much. The processors should have more than enough power to do some photo editing in my opinion
Should not be a surprise. This was especially important on elder computers. There lots of things that slows it down. It should be best when nothing is on Auto, when every thing are determented. On elder computer its Bios the same thing, solve the Auto to the correct determent setting And the computer wont use time to figure it out and dont use background threads you dont need that sucks the processors performances.
Simular on a camera If Af are the only on auto or if it not on subject detection. Those things that have a process algoritme. Use only the auto on things you absolutely needs. That will give the camera the best performances. Well offcourse the more expensive hardwares have an advantages over cheaper ones.
How about the video takes about 3 seconds to begin recording after the button is pressed?
Problem explained. Using Fujifilm X Weekly's recipe for Kodak 400 Tai-X, the Clarity is set to +4 and when I use this recipe there is a real discernible lag time between shutter release and storage. This is a known "problem" by Fujifilm X Weekly, and here is how it is addressed:
-- Set Clarity to 0, and just live with it. If you shoot in RAW+JPEG, you could re-process in camera with X RAW Studio and add Clarity after the fact (this is Fujifilm's recommendation)."
Note: the owner of Fujifilm X Weekly actually likes this lag time -- makes hime slow down his shooting process.
I actually think it can be a good thing to slow down. I think too many photographers are running around snapping Off shots getting you to slow down is actually a good thing. It can get you to actually be more mindful instead of rushing that's just my tip I own three or four cameras two Fujifilm cameras at XT5 and GF cam and what I've noticed about using my GFX camera is that it's got me to slow down and that produces better quality photos so it could actually be seen as an asset don't see as a negative and I'm not saying pal to tech .... Saw this as a negative because it actually could be a real positive
I don't understand why this is happened year after year with all camera and Fuji doesn't arrenge this. Thanks for your job 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Read the manual!
Just know that Clarity is disabled for burst tells you right away there's a good reason for it. Have a great weekend!
👍👍👍
I was going to get on the internet and rant about how stupid it is that fujifilm can’t add the new film simulations and settings on my xt3 firmware but nevermind. I still am upset when saving custom simulations, it does not save the custom white balance settings for each custom simulation 😡
::edit::
I also think it would be cool if the app could control and set simulations then set them to the camera.
I think this is portrayed a bit too negatively. I used this setting a lot and learn the hard way. Faster SD cards do help a little but I reserve using this specifically on certain recipes only. You just have to understand what's going on and why you're doing it…because you going for certain look. Just understand that it's going to slow you down and it's probably not a recipe for burst mode or high speed use. I don't really see that as a negative. For new people learn your camera the first thing you should do. Love the content love the channel and love this community!
This affects JPG output. Raw shooters don’t worry
And Fuji make a big thing of how wonderful their jpegs are and the one thing that lifts them freezes the camera? Turn it off… leave it off 😩
This clarity setting is been a problem for years.
It's even worse when you try to manually burst 2 or 3 images in hope to get the right shot like someone walking. It take ages.
Another misleading setting is that NORMAL MODE and BOOST MODE. They should have been named ECO and NORMAL.
Also those obscure -1 to 5. There are so many inconsistencies. A 0 (nothing applied) to 10 (max effect) with some indications would have been better.
Shortly after getting my x-t5 I exchanged my SD card thinking it was that that was causing the delay. Turns out I had accidentally turned the dial from S to HDR. And now I have a very expensive SD card that is capable of surviving an apocalypse 😂
Unfortunately still unclear WHY..
It’s noted in the camera instructions. Read the instructions before operating the camera people!!!! Good god!
Yeah but saying ‘slows down’ doesn’t actually do it justice. We’re talking 3 secs to save with a Lexar 2000x SD card! That’s a life time when shooting anything that moves, even snails!! Why even put it on the camera? They should say landscapes & architecture only.
No clarity!! it is useless in camera ☹️
Found that out the hard way during a shoot while using my 50s II
I could not figure out what was going on!! Changed out memory cards for faster, nothing changed. Got so frustrated ‘cause i never experienced the slowness in my fujis between clicks.
I forgot i had turned that feature on & only to +1 like Chris. Seriously a lame addition as a ‘feature’ ??? and horrible mallases in January in Buffalo NY process speed between letting take next shot 🥱🥱😴😴😴
What the heck is Fuji even thinking with including this ??!!???🙄🤯
I don’t see this is my xt2
There is something else, don’t know what, that has the same effect.
