I believe the reason for the heavy security presence all over the Philippines is because of the numerous terrorist bombings which used to happen with some frequency. Being a very westernized and Christian nation, it is a target for Muslim extremists. Philippines was also a very staunch and loyal ally of USA. I love manahello too.

I can relate to the "pu-pu" so well. In the Philippines, you use your horn to thank the other driver for giving way so imagine my shock when the other driver (here in the U.S.) gave me the finger for using my horn to express my gratitude to him. I later learned that using your horn "unnecessarily" here is rude.

George and Lucy, do you know why there are security checks everywhere in the Philippines?? The reason for that is way back in late 90’s to early 2000’s there were series of bombing on establishments like malls and train/ shipping / transport hubs from insurgents. The government imposed security checks and private sectors and the public accepted it for the safety. I hope this will enlighten you guys😇

Honking here is not just a warning, sometimes it could be 'excuse me'. 'thank you' and yes also a warning because the cars have the tendency to go bumper to bumper. It depends on the manner and how loud you honk :D I don't know how to drive but my sis who does know always explain to me these things. And as for security check, it's just to make sure there would be no bomb in your bag as there had been a lot of bombings that happened in the 90's and earlier this century. Scary times.

Wow, Traffic is one of our Culture here in Philippines? I never knew that.. We Filipinos hated traffic so much we never knew that it was one of our Culture, it's like a Curse than Culture.. Maybe we just get along with it and accepted it as part of our lives here in metro manila..
