I once met a man from Hamelin. He was surprised the story was well-known here in the U.S. At least it was when I was growing up. Also, thank you for getting us through the dry spell.
Or ergot poisoning. Or mass hysteria. Or stressed induced psychosis. Or who knows? They were extremely superstitious and religious as well But I agree with you that the dancing plague is one of the more crazy things I’ve ever read about either. ☺️
What an interesting story. It’s quite sad, but very intriguing. It makes the imagination wonder about who, or what, could do such a thing, and the mechanics that make it possible. Some mysteries are left to God alone
This reminds me a bit of the weird, dark times read about in the novel "The Walking Drum" and later in historical times "Bendigo Shafter". Things that happened so long ago that no one has the real story but inhabit a darkness that we don't know about anymore.
Great story. I don’t quite understand, though, about what you said regarding not condoning monasteries. Are the not in alignment with the orthodox faith? Did I misunderstand?
I just read that according to Emily Gerard's book Land Beyond the Forest that the descendants of the children taken from Hamelin lived in Hermanstadt in Romania, which has its own weird story of a weather-controlling dragon and Satan teaching 10 students all his secrets. It's a weird connection that I'd love to hear you guys talk about!
This is one of my favorite stories from my childhood, it taught me to pay what you owe. Honor your Word like the Lord said, because He Will hold you A 18:41 ccountable for your Actions, as it Says in The Bible. We as Christians like talking about God’s Mercy & Forgiveness (we like that part of His name God’s in a Good mood & Blessings all around), however, part of His name that he revealed to Moses in Ex 34 is 5-7 is “I Will Not Clear The Guilty, Visiting the Iniquity to Generations.” This Story is an example of not Honoring Your Word.
You said we owe you thanks for not having to listen to a lot of housekeeping that patreon listeners do...but you actually did make us listen to housekeeping.😅
All I can see is modern looking one so who can say when it was really found or maybe placed there….. IT LOOKS FAKE?🤔🤔 Also how are we supposed to tell which one it is, it is not easy to find at all, the one I see is black with German text in a museum…..
I see it says those three black inscriptions are not just German and WERE modern …. And get this the author is “Bush”! 🤔 ….. but it still doesn’t show the original inscription that it says is at the top of the building!!
I felt like it would be an inscription that would have multiple pictures of it that many different people took with maybe a plaque next to it with the translation. And that it would be old and on the actual building...maybe a close up and a distant shot as well. Shaky.
I have a hard time believing it was a mud slide as apparently and based on the story, it took 130 children and for some reason didn’t cause the disappearance of adults including vulnerable elderly people. The “magician” or pied piper possessed a silver and awesome flute. It prompted me to recall the story of the Anasazi who have a story of a trickster sometimes referred as the “gambler” and who following his arrival to that culture, created havoc and over time, destruction.
Hmm. This is very speculative and I certainly don't want to discount a super-natural explanation out of hand but I can't help but wonder whether this story may have had something to do with the children's crusade a number of decades earlier (or perhaps a similar event). Could the story perhaps have been a form of protest when outright protest might not have been tolerated (especially considering the almost jester-like appearance of the piper)? Anyway, thanks for another great episode!
Yes, bc parents, whilst living in a hyper religious society, routinely and selfishly withheld food from their own flesh and blood during times of struggle. Simultaneously. En masse. Right after church. Mhm.
What's wrong with monasteries? Hint: nothing. They are following in the footsteps of John the Baptist, and even Jesus during His time in the wilderness. Most live in communities to help each other, but some have actually lived alone in the wilderness like John the Baptist. They remove themselves from the concerns and temptations of the world and devote their entire lives to Christ. (Of course demons still tempt monks, but it's easier in some ways to resist temptation when you're not surrounded by a society encouraging sins like pride, gluttony or lust, or being constantly bombarded by mass media full of the same.) They pray for the world. And it's not like they've stopped caring about or helping people. Throughout the history of Christianity, people have come to monks for help with problems in their lives, even coming to the ones living alone. The monastic life isn't for everybody, but there is nothing wrong in choosing it.
I love your podcasts. Your story telling and search for the mysteries both frightful and holy is fascinating. However your rarely let a reference to Christianity before the “sacred”discovery of “reformation” go un-slandered. Monasteries. Men and women who spend their lives in prayerful devotion to our Lord and Savior. Why the disclaimer? If you visit such places, certainly you, who appear so open to mysteries would sense their power. I am convinced these spots, drenched in devotion hold our world in check. Without them, our lives would be much worse. You seek out mysteries. Yet belong to a humanized “reformation” that denies mysteries. The Catholic Church is built on mysteries. Catholics have not forgotten. I speak as one privileged to have lived on both sides. I was born into a Presbyterian home. I would never dared speak of what was so clear to my eyes. Imagine my delight when I entered the Catholic faith and found awareness of that which hides behind the physical universe. Mysteries. The body and blood of Christ hidden in a wafer and a cup of wine. Sit before the sacrament and be pierced through the heart.
What's wrong with monasteries? Why wouldn't you condone monasteries? Every now and then, you and Brian like to slip in some anti Catholic sentiment. Why? I pray and would love to see the end of denominational hatred.
@@jamsinentertainment7127 Roman Catholics haven’t repented of the heresies of the council of Trent and it is the Catholic Church that regards Protestants who hold to salvation by grace alone through faith alone, apart from works are damned. The Catholic Church also forbids marriage for their priests even though Scripture warns against those who do so while the Apostle Peter himself was married. On the issue of monasteries, Presbyterian Reformed Christians are thankful that God sovereignly used an unbiblical institution to occasionally accomplish the translation of Scripture and a few other good things but I would encourage you to look into the writings of Martin Luther and John Calvin. One of the cries of the Reformers was “to the fount” they wanted to read the Bible in the original languages and the patristics. These guys are Presbyterians. So am I.
Now I use voice to text to make my comments. So hopefully it did fairly good, but I'm more than positive. There's a few things that are. There are a few mistakes. So I live in Jerusalem, Israel message. Because I wanna talk to you about many other of your stories. But this one I just couldn't let go i just could not be quiet about. I will give you my phone number. When you message we can talk
A haunted cosmos special?! What a great thing to wake up to, thanks guys!
I once met a man from Hamelin. He was surprised the story was well-known here in the U.S. At least it was when I was growing up.
Also, thank you for getting us through the dry spell.
This episode led me on wiki to the phenomenon of "dancing frenzies," which is the wildest thing I've ever read about. Definitely demonic.
Or ergot poisoning. Or mass hysteria. Or stressed induced psychosis. Or who knows? They were extremely superstitious and religious as well But I agree with you that the dancing plague is one of the more crazy things I’ve ever read about either. ☺️
I have I have just become acquainted with your channel and watching all of these binge-watching all of these old older episodes.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Surprise unannounced haunted cosmos special just dropped? What a time to be alive 🎉🎉
Lured away would be a feeling those who had to stay or chose to ,would feel .
Satan is also handsome and well-dressed when people see him. And he uses music to his advantage.
What an interesting story. It’s quite sad, but very intriguing. It makes the imagination wonder about who, or what, could do such a thing, and the mechanics that make it possible. Some mysteries are left to God alone
Thanks guys,
Great episode.
Very thought provoking.

You should do an episode on the grim reaper

So any who I've looked into this quite a bit ( family from area . A Berger Meister 700ish yrs ago)
I cannot find a picture of said inscription online. And the house in the photo appears to be a magnificent building. Something doesn't sit right.
You can't have looked very hard. I found it on my 2nd try by typing "town of hamelin inscription"

@starryaster2 right, I wanted to see the original not a remaster...this peice of evidence is shaky at best.
I felt like it would be an inscription that would have multiple pictures of it that many different people took with maybe a plaque next to it with the translation. And that it would be old and on the actual building...maybe a close up and a distant shot as well. Shaky.
If it were true, the most sensible explanation would be that he led them into the river to drown.

1000 gilders is steep
Did U know , " I am a child of London" or Whatever village U were born & raised in ?"
Children is used for adults as well. Child of....
130 people leaving a small town would surely be devastating ( see below )
Not saying this in the negative way, but how do y'all sleep? Instead of just lying in the dark thinking on all these things you cover?
By having comfort in God
I try to read God’s word more than listening to the podcast 😂
Not going to lie, I can’t listen to these if I’m the only one home lol
I fell asleep to this episode 🤣
So it pays to be a disabled kid In Hamelin
