I'm glad you relate to the words. They describe how I see, think, and feel about colour, but I appreciate that at some point, there will be people who understand less by the descriptions, rather than more. Good to know the Pinterest boards help show the same concepts in real world items.
@@ChristineScamanYes, color can be tricky to describe so between the combo of visuals + words + associations/comparisons to familiar things (food, nature items, etc.), there's a good chance of people picking up what you're putting down. Also seeing colors not isolated but in comparison to other colors for context.
This may be the best video I have come across with the color seasons. Truly, wow. For nearly a year, I have been back and forth between a couple seasons when trying to determine my own, but after swatching some of my lipsticks, I concluded in the last few days that I must be Deep Winter. I previously thought I was an autumn, then thought I must be a Bright Spring because of my contrast, but those pinky corals were still too warm and too bright. I'm very neutral, with only a slight amount of warmth to my skin. I see many different tones; sometimes green, a silvery gold, even purple, blue, and pink... but I still see a slight warmth. This confused me; any time I wear anything with a warm tone, it gives me this sad sort of yellow/grey tone to my complexion. For some reason, your explanation and examples of the seasons bordering neutral made so much sense to me. I do need a touch of warmth in my colors, just, they still need to be cool. Cool with a slight bit of warmth, not warm with a slight bit of coolness. When I came across your video, I had it in my head what I thought my perfect pink was, and hoped to find it in some of your examples. I grew up wearing it, and I've see it in my cheeks when I'm blushing. It gives me that "english rose" type of appearance, and it appears to be it's those icy pinks found in Deep Winter. I loved this, and how detailed and thoughtful you were with your descriptions. I hope to see more videos of other colors. This helped me with what I had in my head for so long, thank you.

Dried roses, vintage, heirloom flavor is a beautiful way of putting it. I think my signature pink is in that range. Some close to a mauveish purple type of color. I wasn't quite sure if it was still considered a pink because of that mature vintage feel. Lots of lovely shades for soft summers there.
I love your explanations of the Seasons and your Seasons mood boards are the best I have seen from any of the color stylists out there. They provide a detailed level explaining how textiles translate the depth of the colors, and the pairings of outfits, along with the transitions to some of the sister seasons. I feel a bit better knowing that I can mix some of the deep winter with mid-level bright winter colors. You explain it all beautifully!✨

Many people ask for this and I wonder if there are specific places they find challenging or I might be of more help. Since I'm not sure of the answer, I tend to assemble a few items relevant to the topic and then pair them together as I might a closet, but perhaps I could do this with more intention or planning. If any thoughts come to mind, I'd be most interested in hearing about them :)
I am a Dark Autumn but LOVE to wear the Summer Soft pink color (pleated long skirt color) you had up there. It works for me and is in some Dark Autumn color palettes I have seen. 😊 I love your explanation of the color wheel.
Glad you enjoyed the explanation :) SSu and DA have a similar red-violet from the image, I see what you mean. To see the fabrics, they're quite different, I believe there are examples in the Pinterest boards for 12 Blueprints...which I mention because there are some colours between the 2 Seasons that can be even more challenging to distinguish, thinking here about burgundy or wine.
This is so incredibly helpful (and also very relaxing to watch). I just modeled for Terry Wildfong while she was training a new analyst, and we were all a little surprised when I ended up as a bright winter. The last year or two, I thought I might even be a soft autumn or soft summer, because that was the type of colors I was drawn to wearing and initially my features seem to have low contrast. But now I need to learn a lot about finding my colors in the wild and decide which I am attracted to for my personal style.
Thank you for this great video! I've never seen anyone analyze colors in such a differentiated, meticulous and passionate way including the texture of the pieces. Interestingly, as a bright spring I mostly wear the very pastel and light pinks (even though it may make me look "fragile" and girly to some people) because they just make my cheeks glow and make me feel happy inside whereas the more intense or darker versions tend to overwhelm. Luckily, everyone can find their best pink and enjoy wearing it. I'm looking forward for more of your videos!

Hi, I’m watching again. There’s always so much information in these videos 😄 Would you consider doing a video like this on blue/green? It seems like every season has a blue/green, and I have a hard time telling them apart.
Great that you're watching again, it would be almost impossible for anyone (including me) to absorb it all in one go, plus this is a long one! I hope to have videos for all the colour in time. Green is much requested and I plan to divide it into warm and cool, so blue green is high on the list.

Chemical hair colour could be an interesting way of getting ideas about our colouring. It's just a hat, right? Or a drape surrounding our face. If you are a TSp, you could have rose gold highlights! (though I'd never suggest colouring hair as a guide to Season, it's too hard to change and fix!)
I would love to see a video on how colors influence characters in movies or actors and their persona’s they are trying to portray whilst promoting their movies. I am an actor myself and I think that I could use colors to portray myself differently and get cast.
I see this deliberate use of colour in movies quite often, to convey a character's progress along their arc. I'm not sure I have enough access to copyrighted content to put a video together, or splice certain scenes into a video, but the topic is truly fascinating, both when they get it right and the character's appearance is so eloquent and when they get it not-so-right and the character seems unauthentic, hard to feel any connection. My favourite is watching the costume colour choices improve as the character gains strength, again dramatically successful at times and at other times, an improvement but too repetitive or predictable and the character seems to stop evolving.

This turned up in my recommendations just as I was going to paint my nails in my favourite pink. I wish I could find as many purses in spring pinks as you could! I just love warm pinks and wish they were easier to find.
It's interesting, right? DW can be like DA where pink may not be an easy fit, or not traditional pastel pink, but with enough density, it can be fantastic. Funny to find it in shoes.
I'm glad you found some ideas here. If there were a Season that has told me over and over, "I can't wear red." or "There are no reds I can wear.", it's SSu, and yet the Season has so many easy options. I'm thinking now I should have shown the cool rust/cardamom, but the video is already so long!
I had a very successful shopping session and it occurred to me that your videos are what finally allowed me to begin to put it together. I have been watching videos about my season but with so many options out in the world, one must be able to compare and contrast to figure out which color will work best. There is no section in a store dedicated to a season. We have to train our eyes and with your videos, I think I am finally making progress there. Thank you so much. I am sparkling because of you! Another observation about this medium. In UA-cam, we want to watch the videos that will give us the answers we think we need, your videos give us the questions we don’t even know we need to ask, but when we do, that is where the magic happens. I hope that makes sense.

Sparkling is a very good outcome! I appreciate what you say about answering questions we didn't know to ask, which happens to all of us as we learn something new. Makes perfect sense and having those answers early fills those random knowledge gaps so we can make progress faster. I recall the details of my own journey and its challenges and notice how people apply information from me or any media. Usually, it's me who has learned to communicate more clearly :)
I'm so curious about trying a pink because as a True Summer I've almost naturally gravitated towards blues, greens and greys, but I've found it so difficult to find the right pink tone in the shops. They're either really bright or very pastel. I'll keep hunting around!
Blue, green, and gray for Summer are plentiful here as well. Pink, fuchsia, and violet can take more patience until they appear. Also worth looking at smaller items, like scarves and mittens, and printed items, both lovely on Summer. "The shops" sounds like a UK expression and if there are particular department stores that are popular online, I'd be happy to look and add a few to the Pinterest boards if I see them. &OtherStories can be quite good but I'm not sure of the others (I'm in Canada). The bigger department stores are good for having many brands and a large online inventory. You'd still want to verify Season in person and check their return policy.
@@ChristineScaman That's a good idea, I'm a big fan of wearing scarves so maybe I'll give that a try! Haha and yes, I'm from the UK. I think that's often where I'm struggling, there's more choice from stores like Debenhams, John Lewis and Marks & Spencer, but their actual physical shops are closing quite frequently, so I'm trying to figure out the colours from online pictures which aren't always accurate.
Stores and malls are having an evolution here as well and even good return policies use up time, resources, and our energy. I'll have a look at the stores you mention over the next week or so, might offer an idea or two.
I just found your videos, and am so happy about that! You are a delight to listen to. Pedagogical and so relaxing as well. You are a great teacher. I am clearly cool and think that I'm a true summer. Usually go for soft summer colours, and they do seem a little bit off, because I don't have a good eye on what's cool and what's warm. The oranges and the lights are my worst. I can not wear pale icy colours either. I love true winter's darker colours but I'm probably to pale for them. One thing I can never get rigth are the lipsticks. I would love a video with just make up tips.
Welcome to the channel, I'm glad to have you join! A video about makeup is a great idea but cosmetics for the Seasons may be too individual to narrow down to 'best' for a wider audience. The colours all exist in cosmetics but how they will suit each person in a Season will differ, depending on natural colouring and overall darkness level or lifestage, skin tone, skin chemistry, other makeup, and response to the formulation, and of course, personal opinion :) If you have a particular question about lipstick or makeup, I'd be happy to offer an answer. If you are in N. America, many women who are not able to visit a colour analyst purchase the cosmetic Sample Sets for the two neighbour Seasons and try out all the colours to find their favourites.
Pink isn't the easiest of colours, or it isn't for me, whereas the coral pink is easy and comfortable. I hope the video helps you find some beautiful items!
@@ChristineScaman I have tried orange pink lipstick and I believe it suits me. I also want to try some harvest violet pinks in clothes 😀. However pastel corals I can't wear. I can't wear pastels.

Thank you. I personally struggle with hair color as a soft summer. As a child I used to be blonde, now I have deeper ashy hair. I still believe I look better with highlighted hair, but it’s difficult to find the right balance, not to make the highlights too bright/light. Also, I think it would be interesting to hear your thoughts not just about hair color, but the right technique used on the hair for the seasons - sometimes even a natural balayage can be too strong for my coloring. I imagine bright seasons could pull off hair colored fully or stronger highlights, and softer seasons - soft balayage or soft highlights?
I haven't thought about hair colour technique associations for the 12 Seasons. My first reaction might be that this relates more the style and shape than colour. As with clothing, design, cut, scale, detailing, and so on, belong in the realm of styling and any of these could apply to any Season depending on the person. Seasons do have inherent contrast levels, and staying within the light-dark of that Season makes a huge improvement, but strong or bright highlights vs soft highlights might still be more about colour. I prefer threads of highlights to stripes and full colour as balayage from the temples down on most people. A classic body type Winter might do allover single colour better, but much depends on the natural colour to begin with, which also varies, even within a Season.

Hi Christine. I love this vid series - the "what type of pink/ yellow, etc" for each season. I hope you do more of these. I've already watched most of them - yellow, orange, blue jeans, etc but sometimes I re-watch them for a refresher. I also refer your vids to other people sometimes (but sometimes they may get deleted by the YT creator, haha). I haven't been professionally analyzed but have watched lots of draping vids & draped myself. I'm a TA/ DA. Sometimes it's hard to buy clothes from just 1 palette (not right size, fit, price, etc) so I use those 2 palettes (sometimes also SA) to have more options. Cheers!
As long as you and other viewers find these videos useful, they will keep appearing :) Sounds as though you're finding your way and making excellent choices. Buying clothes from 1 palette can happen over a long time but once we know our colours, we want to move forward and you're making it work! If you have not watched Nextdoor Seasons Colours on this channel, it may help as well.
These videos help broaden both our horizons :) These are just my interpretations of the palettes and I imagine every colour analyst or person in a Season would have their own ideas, which I see as a good thing. I wish we didn't all live so far apart and I appreciate that we can talk here.

DA pink especially struck me because a lot of examples seem to only showcase warmer, almost rusty, deep terracottas and salmons as pink. Beautiful but after almost 2 years, it feels confining or boring? On my screen these examples are reading coral. They show an unexpected and welcome brightness too. (If I hadn’t seen DW and Bsp examples, I would have guessed these were one of those seasons.) They may end up reading a bit different in real life, should I ever find these in retail. Totally fine, I just know the hunt may take longer ha. I wish we all lived closer too because it’s always lovely chatting with you! Sending you hugs from the US.
There are simplifier people and multiplier people, both great ways of finding our answers and feeling well. I'm a multiplier, as you would have guessed :) Like all advice, colour interpretations are influenced by both giver and receiver and for some, this much departure from traditional DA would be too much. For others, the wider the expansion, the more interesting the process.
I loved this video! One topic I'd love to see is how to handle situations where your color choices are constrained. For me, that's professional attire which is lots of cool colors and black (I'm True Autumn) -- finding a brown or warm taupe suit can be a real challenge! Another situation might be a uniform, or a bridesmaid dress, and so on. How can we work at the edges -- or even the opposites -- of our palettes and make the best of our limited options?
Many people find themselves in this situation and the answer may depend on the particular combination of person and clothing requirement. The uniform colour is often fairly rigid, although you appear to have some flexibility with taupe suits. My general policy is to do what I can with the options available to me and then move on. Examples might be wearing one's natural hair colour and excellent makeup (if that’s permitted), and wearing a perfect jacket to work. The consolation may be that everyone understands our clothes are a uniform and beautiful colour harmony isn’t expected. When I think of these people in my world, our relationship is so unrelated to their appearance that I barely register who looks great in the uniform colour.
Could u do A video about Simone Simons? She is a natural brunette ( there are no pics of her in her natural Color) she looks so amazing as a redhead! I guess she’s a bright spring. She also had a phase of very light strawberry hair and it looked worse on her. But she looks amazing in black as well. I can’t even imagine her as brunette cause the red suits her so well
Thank you for introducing me to Simone. She is very beautiful and does wear red tones in hair well, some shades better than others, as you say. Her colouring seems to be on the cooler side, although I couldn't choose between Summer and Winter. With her youth and beauty, wearing makeup in most every photo, and bright hair colour, the real person becomes less available than the persona. As lovely as the pictures are, I'm not sure what I could say that would help real, ordinary people in our everyday lives, or where to begin when there are no images without the various masks. I'm glad to hear you say there are no images with natural hair colour, I couldn't find any either that weren't staged. Certainly an interesting person and great example of colouring that might be either Summer or Winter, with the answer found only by seeing her in person.

I sit myself between true and dark autumn. I look great in rich warm colours ,although I don't like the way I look in some colours of both these palettes but I look good in more colours in dark autumn but I fit the features better of the true autumn 😂🤷♀️ I just wear what colours look good on me. I look good in peach/orange colours but I don't look good in pink though but with my olive undertone I look good in dusty pink.

Welcome to the channel :) We'll get through all the colours in time.Yes, red lipstick can be exciting and for a Winter, or their natural-nude will be some variation of red or purple. Mulberry and fig are great ones for my Season. The camera, software, and computers have changed over the years, but in the last couple years, it's the same makeup in every video!
I wonder if you’d do a video on browns, tans, khakis, and taupes (I realize that’s an expansive color range, maybe it wouldn’t be like this one that includes each season but covers the differences in them to assess them better on the munsell scale)? I keep reading that espresso brown and cool taupes are on the Bright Winter palette but never see any examples of how they can best wear them.
Some colours are more of a challenge with these videos. This one about Pink is already much too long, but I prefer keeping choices broad rather than anchoring a colour in a single version in people's minds. I like your idea about covering the colours as differences, which is actually great. It would allow me to cover A vs Sp neutrals in the same video. Excellent, thank you for this. In the meantime, you know you can purchase your neutral tones as a kit of 12, right? Or perhaps you already have them. Having the palette or video colours in your hand as real textile can be a huge step forward in understanding. Brown and taupe for BW is tricky for sure and the kit does include a few versions, possibly more than the palettes. Also, the Pinterest board may show a few options (search my name or business name).
I understand the 16 types version better, but I'd like to know why you do the 12 types version? I like how you explane things so I'll haveto figure out if your version of "True summer" is my version of "Cool summer" I find that it's easier with 16 types when there is: Soft summer, Light summer, Cool summer and if someone looks good in all those they are True summer and can not borrow from an opposit warm catagory. If I'm Soft summer i can borrow some thing from Soft autumn, Light summer can borrow from Light spring for example, and that makes more sence since many get confused to why they can have some warm colors being Cool. And vice verca. It gives so much more range and more choices ♡
You're so right that different systems have their own approach, analysis process (I assume), and advice for clients. I use the 12 Season system because the approach and application seemed so sound from every perspective back when I was looking into being trained in 2009. That said, one system isn't best or perfect and other systems are not wrong, they're just different. For example, I wouldn't align with the idea that if a person looks equally good in Soft and Light Summer, they would be a True Summer. Also, I'm not sure the difference between Cool and True Summer and don't include a Summer-Winter blend in my approach. I'm not sure how other systems work or how their colour palettes are constructed but I have a notion that if the analysis process were filmed in the different systems, it would be extremely different. It can be hard for consumers to choose and I find the best approach is to choose the one that feels best while we're learning the concepts and then add whatever comes along in other systems that could enrich or expand our ideas.
@@ChristineScaman In the system they were describing the true seasons don’t exemplify the cool/warm traits of the season (so their cool winter is the same as your true winter). In that system true describes someone with a fairly even blend of the season’s 3 characteristics, which means they can’t borrow from another season like someone who’s primarily something can! But they have more room to move within their own season instead. It seems to be much less common than fitting into one of the groups you also use. It seems that good colour analysts notice things even if they don’t neatly align with the system? It’s much more important to go to someone with a good eye than someone with my favourite system! For example I saw someone who was told they’re a true (warm) autumn but they were better off borrowing colours from dark (deep) autumn than from true (warm) spring like most people in their subgroup would. True spring was just too bright on them even though warmth was their most important characteristic. The dark autumn palette provided interesting but not overwhelming contrast as long as they kept to the warmer colours in the palette! Similarly, I like how you include colours in these videos and say things like some people from this group might be able to wear this colour while others might find it a bit too dark. The systems are made to work for people not the other way around 🥰
I am a bright winter, and my experience is that I have more flexibility wearing reds, fuschias, and pinks that may not be in my season. Do all seasons have more lattitude in their pinks? Or is it because as a winter my undertone is red violet? Or am I swayed because I love pink?😅 Are there seasons that have thsame latitude with green? I think summers might have a similar flexibility with blues and springs with yellows?
Great question and observations, though I'm not sure I have an answer. I'd guess it's a bit of everything. Where I might think Seasons have latitude with certain colour, and you, and a person in the Season could be different. I find SSu beautiful in their pinks but if there's one group where I hear "I have no reds.", it's that one, possibly because they haven't found the right red and learned to see themselves wearing it yet. Reds are a favourite for me as well, although many Winters won't wear the colour at all. I think it's related to the psychology of the colour in some kind of way. Summers accept blue and blue green effortlessly and it is effortless to see them wearing it, although perhaps less stimulating or interesting than their pinks and reds.
Thank you for another wonderful masterclass! It is interesting, because I love pinks ( and reds and purples) I find it more difficult to stick to my BW range. As long as I stay away from salmon or terracotta, i still see some resonance with my coloring and the clothes. BW pinks/fuschias are some of my best colors. Whereas greens and yellows I get a clear "flattering" or "dear God no" 😅 Blues are in between. Regarding lipstick, my favorite pink is MAC Girl About Town which reminds me of the BW purse with gathered fabric. My favorite red is 12 Blueprints Juliette gloss. 12 blueprints Enchanted and Pumped up are excellent as red and pink blushes.
Brilliant that you've done some thoughtful experimenting and found your mirrors and maps, your comfort and push zones and their edges, and your colour world is an abundant world to explore and reap the rewards :) I can easily picture those cosmetic colours for you, many people have compared MAC's product to 12B Maxed Out. I also use green a lot to harmonize (technical term for 'dear God no'). Between us, I find it has two choices: great or gross.

Her facial features remind me of Meghan Markle, at least in photos, but the colouring appears different in terms of her clothing colours. Even as a True Summer pink is a tough one for me to get right - I have some yellow in my eyes and kind of ruddy skin - and I used to try warmer shades. Really helpful to distinguish some Winter shades as too blue or too pigmented - I wondered how anything could be too blue for a TS, but some clothing and lipstick shades really do look that way, to my eye. Interesting I thought pink was a great color for true summers as long as its cool enough. Baby pink, ice pink, rose pink, dusty pink ect. Im a summer with deeper ash hair and pink is one of my favorites. Do you feel it brings out rudiness in your skintone?
@@Arginne Hi, Thank you for your thoughtful question. Honestly I’m not sure quite what it is…but highly pigmented blue-pink shades seem to clash with the color in my cheeks. Maybe it’s the amount of pigmentation, or maybe the overtones in my skin…or maybe I am not seeing it quite right. Still learning, and the color palette has been very helpful to me.
In general I do like and wear pink (a lot) but very bright and/or highly pigmented shades do not seem to work. Also i had to learn to select shades with enough pigment - not too dusty, and not icy.
I agree, sometimes redness in skin can happen in certain colours even in Season, perhaps more often in Summers, when colours are too dark or bright or both. Warmth will do it too, the face becomes flushed for some, whereas others don't change skin colour so much as the texture seems waxy or the natural colours discordant. Glad the video was helpful :)

Yes, I took a few videos down. I would have had a reason for each video, but I don't recall what it was. For the award shows, I may have felt that I sounded overly critical. Since I've never really resolved the question of copyright for those images, understanding that 'everybody does it' and the Fair Dealing Disclaimer don't carry much weight, I hope I can at least offer content that's educational and helpful to viewers.
That's an important topic, I agree. It has relevance to every Season and I try to mention it wherever possible. Great video as always; just rewatched it. So if someone's best pink is rose, do you think it's likely they're Soft Summer? The vintage, heirloom, sentimental dried roses description of that one crushed velour is the closest I saw in this video to the type of rose I find amazing for this specific person.
Regardless of seasons, pinks are my best colors. I loved this video! 😊 I honestly don’t know what season I am. Is it possible for a brunette of warm tones to be in a cool season category? I just don't shine in orange colors, while true pinks emphasize my best natural features, but very bright pinks are too much on me, and dark muted colors drag my appearance down. I am pale with gray-blue eyes. I have medium-dark hair that can look warm or cool. On average my brown hair doesn't look warm, but in the right light or under a salon professional I do have gold highlights and red strands. My skin tone is overall pale tan, pink, yellow. I look vibrant matching to my pink tones, I blend matching to tan tones, I look bland matching to my yellow tones. I look ill in yellowy-green-brown hybrid colors, while purple eliminates discolorations. Orange lipstick takes away from my naturally pink cheeks, while a simple tinted pink chapstick blooms my cheeks and eyes without any other makeup. I can wear gold and silver, gold blends really lovely, but silver gives me a contrast pop almost looking more glamorous. Are diamonds neutral? Because I do love to sparkle. 🙂
I'm so glad you enjoyed the video :) Pink is a colour many people love and might wear more often if they felt it was the right pink for them, compared with blue, where they don't mind about the colour. I can't comment about your Season but you've been making good observations on your own. One thought might be to disregard your hair colour in the decision. Cover it so you can only see your face. Hair colour is huge in final presentation but for Season, once you have colour harmony with your skin and eyes, your hair will be in the same great harmony. Your hair colour could be cool, warm, or neutral, as could your Season.
Excellent, helpful video! In your opinion, could a soft season simply tint brighter and lighter clothing with a grey fabric dye to make them more soft season appropriate?
It's a good question, although outside my area of expertise. I have friends who dye clothes and the resulting colour can be perfect or surprising or both :) I've also heard of Soft Seasons washing bright colours with their darks, not sure how well this works. You could try it with an inexpensive item, or a few, and practice till you get the effect you want.

That's a great suggestion actually. Is the person a Summer or another Season? There are quite a few colours that don't slide easily into the Season palettes, usually blue-violets, yellow-greens, or these light soft colours, though I'm sure someone would wear them well.
@@ChristineScaman I've just noticed that a deeper cool leaning skin tone, looks great in that pink. I've seen it with lip color and clothing. I could never wear that color!
Christine, I love your work and your channel deserves more recognition. I am dark winter, I have all the characteristics (high contrast, deep features on a pale complexion), but I can't use vibrant colors from my season, I just can't. Is this normal or should I look for another consultation? I feel good with the soft summer tones, but of course, I need contrast to not get washed out.
Hi and thank you for being here, I appreciate your comments :) I may not be able to answer your question without seeing you and the colour(s) you have in mind in person. It could be that particular DW bright colours worn in certain ways might be less compatible (as they might be with me). Or it's possible that the bright colours you're thinking of have been from another Season (even DW people who have your colouring and look very Winter may look drained or overwhelmed in TW or BW). Another opinion on Season might be good, but if you feel well in the more Autumn-like colours and the softer expression of DW (which is significantly softer than TW), and washed out in SSu, then DW may be the one.
One more question, have you ever seen a client who had good tolerance for at least two of the color characteristics? Perhaps even a person with good tolerance with all three characteristics? For example, good temperature tolerance and good chroma tolerance?
Perhaps all Seasons have good tolerance for 2 of the 3 colour dimensions, since in all Seasons, 2 are set around medium and the 3rd is lower or higher. Depends on your definition of good tolerance. A person with good tolerance of all 3 might depend on whom you ask. A colour analyst might say no or that one dimension is lower or higher than the others. For eg., Soft Summer's brightness tolerance is higher than just neutral tones, though lower than other Seasons' brightness.

I love how you talk about colour. Is it possible to be between seasons, like being a soft autumn who isn’t extremely soft, or a true spring that has a neutral undertone?
Thank you! To your questions, there may be a difference in the technical meaning of 'soft' of 'neutral' and how they're measured, compared with the observations of how a person looks. In their general appearance, some people within any Season look softer than others, even the Winter groups, until their colour reactions are 'measured' with calibrated drape colours. Some Tsp or TA people look very warm, as yellow or gold or copper, some don't, but in technical terms, it doesn't make them neutral in warmth. The reverse is true as well, cool Season people can appear yellow, golden, olive, and so on, and when properly tested, they are in fact cool or cool-neutral and their apparent or surface yellow is coming from a cool palette. Please ask if I haven't quite answered your question :)
This was so informative, thank you! I have a phase for pink color now, which made me confused about my season... I always thought I was light spring, but some indicators lead me to believe I might be light summer? Those two are so "close together" I feel like, that it's really hard to pin-point what looks good and what off. Are there any tips you could give me to decide between these two? (light summer vs. light spring) For instance, I prefer a pink blush (with golden shimmer in it, so not completely cool) over a peach blush, and I prefer a rather pink lip stick over peach. But in clothing, I adore sandy pinks, yet I feel like I cannot pull off colors with more "coolness" (like an icy pink for instance).
I'm glad that you found the video helpful :) Choosing between neighbour Seasons can be challenging because they share so much in their response to colour. I don't have any tips or suggestions and even in-person with exact drapes, it can take some time to make the decision. You may find the video on the channel, Nextdoor Season Colours, useful and if you decide to wear the colours of both Light Seasons that suit you best, that would be an excellent decision.
I know I'm coming to this late, but I have a question and a request. First, the question. There was a hot pink blouse in what I think was the first BW grouping for Winter. I'm a Bright Spring and I would probably wear that top. Would that work? It might be a little too aggressive for my season, but would it pass? Second, would you do a video comparing neutrals that border each other? I would really benefit from a side-to-side comparison of the two Bright seasons. At one point, it would also would have been helpful to see the two Soft seasons together. My husband, who I think was a Soft Summer summer, kept veering into what was obviously Autumn and Winter. It might have been helpful if he could have seen those comparisons. He also might not have cared. Anyway, it would be very helpful to me if you would put BW and BSp on the screen together. As an aside, there's a thread going in the Bright Spring group on Facebook in which some people are insisting that Fuchsia isn't in our palette. I pointed out 2.8 and 2.10, but I could be wrong about that. I found it to be very interesting to hear your talk about fuchsia in Autumn. I'll pass that on.
About the BW top from the video, once we're into degrees of colours, pictures on screens, or what 'pass' means, the answer may come down to the person wearing it. I see what you're saying about 'aggressive' but I could see the colour for quite a few BSP. It's within the light-dark range and has good brightness, so BSp is happy on two out of three dimensions. From there, how sensitive is the particular person to coolness? For some people, even between neighbour Seasons, it would be a little frosty, but I could also imagine cooler fuchsias than this blouse that would be too near TW. I've tried to put together videos comparing neutrals. Turns out that finding images isn't straightforward, and having the differences show up on screen doesn't always work, especially for very light or dark colours. I tried showing neighbour colours in the Nextdoor Seasons video, but neutrals are harder. Many folks request videos on BSp and I'm thinking about how to make something of value for viewers. SSu to SA may be easier to show since they have more pigment than W type neutrals and I'm sure I'd find more images. I'll think on it. Maybe bigger categories, like neutrals for the True Season groups. You may know that we did a podcast on neutrals for the 4 Season groups last year on chrysalis colour dot com that many folks found useful. About the online group and fuchsia, I always like learning new names for colours. If they don't call it fuchsia, do they have other names for it?
What the difference between summer and winter. Analisys give me deep winter but the pink that is best for me (that what i see) is for true summer. How can this be possible? I have dark brown hair (in the sun is lighter) cold skin and brown hazel eyes. On the other hand bright colors dont suit me but black suit me. In really confuse. I
The difference may depend on which Summer and Winter. Overall, they're both cool but Winter is brighter (more saturated colour) and the light to dark range reaches from white and black, whereas Summer's range is narrower, doesn't reach the extremes. You do have one Season where everything makes sense, although it may be a bit longer before an analysis shows you which it is :)
I imagine this could be a good clue to one's season, if you wouldn't wear that color as a lipstick/gloss, then maybe you are not that season (?) There is one, and only one color here I do wear on my 👄.
I haven't seen the lipstick colour clue work consistently, tbh. There is no single colour that works to identify Season, and no lipstick looks the same on every person in the same Season. I find blush a better guide because we don't apply it to pigmented skin and it has fewer personal and cultural implications, meaning blush has less latitude on the not enough-just right-too much scale, but even there, just because a colour works or doesn't isn't reliable for Season. A solid, accurate draping is the way to know and we figure out the rest from there :)
Great question. The answer is because Light Summer is a blend of Summer with Spring. Summer's colour properties are light, cool, and soft. Spring's are light, warm, and bright. When they combine, as in Light Summer, Spring contributes brightness.There's a video on the channel, Jewel Tones for Light Summer, that gives you a visual for how the colours look.
@ChristineScaman May I ask you this…I’ve done a lot of self draping and can only suspect what I may be without a professional eye but I did notice that most pinks seem to make me look sick or tired while I seem to pull off a wide variety of greens. Is there a season that tends to favor green this way?
I read your question yesterday and found it so interesting, one I haven't been asked, and I've been thinking about it since. I would guess most people would say the opposite about pink and green, possibly from taste, emotion, or popularity of the colour, but your previous comments have seemed independent of those. Unfortunately, I'm still getting a blank. In the most general possible way, meaning don't give this any importance, Soft Summers can be iffy about pink and red, and put them in the right pine green, they bring people to tears. I wouldn't describe them wearing 'a wide variety of greens' though, so who would? Warmer Seasons, possibly, depending on the brightness?
I’m sure that in a controlled setting the greens that don’t work as well would be more obvious, there is definitely more surface harmony with some than others, some are obviously too bright or light, but there aren’t too many that are overly offensive the way there are with other colors. Honestly I remember being 7 years old and wondering why all the pinks didn’t look good on me the way they did on other little girls. I either look sick, tired, or like I’m wearing children’s clothing in most pinks. Some of the soft ones work, some don’t. At this point I think I’m either a very neutral soft or a very mousey dark. Every time I think I have it something changes my mind. At least I have it narrowed down I guess, and it’s easy being green. One day I will know for sure.
Thanks for sharing this experience. There are many colours we wear well as clothing but unlike clothing, makeup is applied directly to skin and intended to look like skin. While lip colour has wide latitude in cultural acceptance, blush in most cultures is expected to look natural, healthy, but not particularly noticeable in its own right. From the many red options in the palette, I find the light-medium neutral reds suit most people best. The warm and cool edges of the reds for SSu don't blend into the face as well, and the same for the darker reds. Gorgeous as clothing, meaningful and nuanced, but for blush, I prefer the more medium warmth and value choices.

From the Nextdoor Seasons video, 'you tell them apart in the places they're different'. Between SSu and SA, brightness and darkness are too similar to be useful for differentiating, but earthy colours, neutrals, lipsticks (reds), and whites might help.

Hi, I am learning so much from you and have your book which I love. I have a question about being able to tell if you are a true or soft summer. I am not sure you can answer and that is okay. All the true summer make up is working for me which says something to me but I understand you cannot rely on that. Unfortunately I have thought I was a winter for a long time and do not have much summer clothes right now. However, when I do test between soft and true summer, with soft I notice some redness in my cheeks. Is that good or bad? You don't have to answer my true summer fan is on the way and I am trying to obtain a soft summer one right now and eventually I will figure out what I am looking for. Thank you.
I'm so happy to hear that the book and videos are helping you :) A Season decision is based on many optical effects and observations, meaning that a single point of data, such as red cheeks, wouldn't lean the decision towards or away from a Season. We would look for Big Picture and Small Picture details combined to arrive at the choice or elimination. We're really just looking for the truth of your colouring, and if you have flushed cheeks or redness in a blemish, then you do. We could reduce their appearance with certain colours, but altering our natural colours would always come with a price, for example, loss of facial contour or draining of colour elsewhere in the features. The video on the channel, Nextdoor Season Colours, may offer some ideas, but once Seasons are this close, it can be quite challenging just with items of clothing, let alone an actual person. Even trained analysts with perfectly calibrated colour drapes may find this among the more challenging decisions.

I think so and can see my confusion but I have been all over the map and started with Dark Winter. Summer and Winter colours share coolness, and for BW, this lighter type of Winter brings their palette value range closer to Summer. Also for BW, colours can resemble brighter versions of Light Summer, which is the brighter Summer. In how the people look, some have medium brown hair and blue eyes, which can resemble the colouring of some Summers. So to answer your question, yes, there are similarities in the colour properties and how some of the people appear. I hope you're able to have the analysis experience one day, you ask great questions and would love seeing your answers come to life :)
Yes, I agree it would look better. With software though, colours are brightened unevenly and black seems to cause the least fluctuations (and the quietest look in the thumbnail images). Light and bright colours are extremely bright, almost glowy. Also, when I meet clients, I wear gray and no jewelry, to keep my appearance as quiet as possible, and the videos are the same in trying to keep all the attention on the colours or image we're discussing rather than myself. With videos, viewers would see what I'm wearing on the same screen as the images and I wonder if it might be distracting. I figure the more neutral I am, the better.
Lots of pink variety today! If you like to keep things simple or you're just getting started with your colours, you may prefer to stay with the first time through each Season. I'm glad you relate to the words. They describe how I see, think, and feel about colour, but I appreciate that at some point, there will be people who understand less by the descriptions, rather than more. Good to know the Pinterest boards help show the same concepts in real world items.
@@ChristineScamanYes, color can be tricky to describe so between the combo of visuals + words + associations/comparisons to familiar things (food, nature items, etc.), there's a good chance of people picking up what you're putting down. Also seeing colors not isolated but in comparison to other colors for context.

This may be the best video I have come across with the color seasons. Truly, wow. For nearly a year, I have been back and forth between a couple seasons when trying to determine my own, but after swatching some of my lipsticks, I concluded in the last few days that I must be Deep Winter. I previously thought I was an autumn, then thought I must be a Bright Spring because of my contrast, but those pinky corals were still too warm and too bright. I'm very neutral, with only a slight amount of warmth to my skin. I see many different tones; sometimes green, a silvery gold, even purple, blue, and pink... but I still see a slight warmth. This confused me; any time I wear anything with a warm tone, it gives me this sad sort of yellow/grey tone to my complexion. For some reason, your explanation and examples of the seasons bordering neutral made so much sense to me. I do need a touch of warmth in my colors, just, they still need to be cool. Cool with a slight bit of warmth, not warm with a slight bit of coolness. When I came across your video, I had it in my head what I thought my perfect pink was, and hoped to find it in some of your examples. I grew up wearing it, and I've see it in my cheeks when I'm blushing. It gives me that "english rose" type of appearance, and it appears to be it's those icy pinks found in Deep Winter. I loved this, and how detailed and thoughtful you were with your descriptions. I hope to see more videos of other colors. This helped me with what I had in my head for so long, thank you.

Dried roses, vintage, heirloom flavor is a beautiful way of putting it. I think my signature pink is in that range. Some close to a mauveish purple type of color. I wasn't quite sure if it was still considered a pink because of that mature vintage feel. Lots of lovely shades for soft summers there.

I love your explanations of the Seasons and your Seasons mood boards are the best I have seen from any of the color stylists out there. They provide a detailed level explaining how textiles translate the depth of the colors, and the pairings of outfits, along with the transitions to some of the sister seasons. I feel a bit better knowing that I can mix some of the deep winter with mid-level bright winter colors.

To see the fabrics, they're quite different, I believe there are examples in the Pinterest boards for 12 Blueprints...which I mention because there are some colours between the 2 Seasons that can be even more challenging to distinguish, thinking here about burgundy or wine.
This is so incredibly helpful (and also very relaxing to watch). I just modeled for Terry Wildfong while she was training a new analyst, and we were all a little surprised when I ended up as a bright winter. The last year or two, I thought I might even be a soft autumn or soft summer, because that was the type of colors I was drawn to wearing and initially my features seem to have low contrast. But now I need to learn a lot about finding my colors in the wild and decide which I am attracted to for my personal style.
Thank you for this great video! I've never seen anyone analyze colors in such a differentiated, meticulous and passionate way including the texture of the pieces. Interestingly, as a bright spring I mostly wear the very pastel and light pinks (even though it may make me look "fragile" and girly to some people) because they just make my cheeks glow and make me feel happy inside whereas the more intense or darker versions tend to overwhelm. Luckily, everyone can find their best pink and enjoy wearing it. I'm looking forward for more of your videos!

Great that you're watching again, it would be almost impossible for anyone (including me) to absorb it all in one go, plus this is a long one! I hope to have videos for all the colour in time. Green is much requested and I plan to divide it into warm and cool, so blue green is high on the list.
I like how you start with a few as an intro and then take it to the next level with the “more” sections.

Chemical hair colour could be an interesting way of getting ideas about our colouring. It's just a hat, right? Or a drape surrounding our face. If you are a TSp, you could have rose gold highlights! (though I'd never suggest colouring hair as a guide to Season, it's too hard to change and fix!)
I would love to see a video on how colors influence characters in movies or actors and their persona’s they are trying to portray whilst promoting their movies. I am an actor myself and I think that I could use colors to portray myself differently and get cast.
I see this deliberate use of colour in movies quite often, to convey a character's progress along their arc. I'm not sure I have enough access to copyrighted content to put a video together, or splice certain scenes into a video, but the topic is truly fascinating, both when they get it right and the character's appearance is so eloquent and when they get it not-so-right and the character seems unauthentic, hard to feel any connection. My favourite is watching the costume colour choices improve as the character gains strength, again dramatically successful at times and at other times, an improvement but too repetitive or predictable and the character seems to stop evolving.

I'm glad you found some ideas here. If there were a Season that has told me over and over, "I can't wear red." or "There are no reds I can wear.", it's SSu, and yet the Season has so many easy options. I'm thinking now I should have shown the cool rust/cardamom, but the video is already so long!

I had a very successful shopping session and it occurred to me that your videos are what finally allowed me to begin to put it together. I have been watching videos about my season but with so many options out in the world, one must be able to compare and contrast to figure out which color will work best. There is no section in a store dedicated to a season. We have to train our eyes and with your videos, I think I am finally making progress there. Thank you so much. I am sparkling because of you!
Another observation about this medium. In UA-cam, we want to watch the videos that will give us the answers we think we need, your videos give us the questions we don’t even know we need to ask, but when we do, that is where the magic happens. I hope that makes sense.

I appreciate what you say about answering questions we didn't know to ask, which happens to all of us as we learn something new. I'm so curious about trying a pink because as a True Summer I've almost naturally gravitated towards blues, greens and greys, but I've found it so difficult to find the right pink tone in the shops. They're either really bright or very pastel. I'll keep hunting around!
Blue, green, and gray for Summer are plentiful here as well. Pink, fuchsia, and violet can take more patience until they appear. Also worth looking at smaller items, like scarves and mittens, and printed items, both lovely on Summer. "The shops" sounds like a UK expression and if there are particular department stores that are popular online, I'd be happy to look and add a few to the Pinterest boards if I see them. &OtherStories can be quite good but I'm not sure of the others (I'm in Canada). The bigger department stores are good for having many brands and a large online inventory. You'd still want to verify Season in person and check their return policy.
@@ChristineScaman That's a good idea, I'm a big fan of wearing scarves so maybe I'll give that a try! Haha and yes, I'm from the UK. I think that's often where I'm struggling, there's more choice from stores like Debenhams, John Lewis and Marks & Spencer, but their actual physical shops are closing quite frequently, so I'm trying to figure out the colours from online pictures which aren't always accurate.
Stores and malls are having an evolution here as well and even good return policies use up time, resources, and our energy. I'll have a look at the stores you mention over the next week or so, might offer an idea or two.

I just found your videos, and am so happy about that! You are a delight to listen to. Pedagogical and so relaxing as well. You are a great teacher. I am clearly cool and think that I'm a true summer. Usually go for soft summer colours, and they do seem a little bit off, because I don't have a good eye on what's cool and what's warm. The oranges and the lights are my worst. I can not wear pale icy colours either. I love true winter's darker colours but I'm probably to pale for them. One thing I can never get rigth are the lipsticks. I would love a video with just make up tips.
Welcome to the channel, I'm glad to have you join! A video about makeup is a great idea but cosmetics for the Seasons may be too individual to narrow down to 'best' for a wider audience. The colours all exist in cosmetics but how they will suit each person in a Season will differ, depending on natural colouring and overall darkness level or lifestage, skin tone, skin chemistry, other makeup, and response to the formulation, and of course, personal opinion :) If you have a particular question about lipstick or makeup, I'd be happy to offer an answer. If you are in N. America, many women who are not able to visit a colour analyst purchase the cosmetic Sample Sets for the two neighbour Seasons and try out all the colours to find their favourites.

Pink isn't the easiest of colours, or it isn't for me, whereas the coral pink is easy and comfortable. I hope the video helps you find some beautiful items!

Thank you. I personally struggle with hair color as a soft summer. As a child I used to be blonde, now I have deeper ashy hair. I still believe I look better with highlighted hair, but it’s difficult to find the right balance, not to make the highlights too bright/light. Also, I think it would be interesting to hear your thoughts not just about hair color, but the right technique used on the hair for the seasons - sometimes even a natural balayage can be too strong for my coloring. I imagine bright seasons could pull off hair colored fully or stronger highlights, and softer seasons - soft balayage or soft highlights?
I haven't thought about hair colour technique associations for the 12 Seasons. My first reaction might be that this relates more the style and shape than colour. As with clothing, design, cut, scale, detailing, and so on, belong in the realm of styling and any of these could apply to any Season depending on the person. Seasons do have inherent contrast levels, and staying within the light-dark of that Season makes a huge improvement, but strong or bright highlights vs soft highlights might still be more about colour. I prefer threads of highlights to stripes and full colour as balayage from the temples down on most people. A classic body type Winter might do allover single colour better, but much depends on the natural colour to begin with, which also varies, even within a Season.
I love these videos. I hope you make one for the color purple for the seasons as I’m struggling to find my signature shade. Seeing the shades side by side by season is so helpful ❤

Hi Christine. I love this vid series - the "what type of pink/ yellow, etc" for each season. I hope you do more of these. I've already watched most of them - yellow, orange, blue jeans, etc but sometimes I re-watch them for a refresher. I also refer your vids to other people sometimes (but sometimes they may get deleted by the YT creator, haha). I haven't been professionally analyzed but have watched lots of draping vids & draped myself. I'm a TA/ DA. Sometimes it's hard to buy clothes from just 1 palette (not right size, fit, price, etc) so I use those 2 palettes (sometimes also SA) to have more options. Cheers!
As long as you and other viewers find these videos useful, they will keep appearing :) Sounds as though you're finding your way and making excellent choices. Buying clothes from 1 palette can happen over a long time but once we know our colours, we want to move forward and you're making it work! These videos help broaden both our horizons :) These are just my interpretations of the palettes and I imagine every colour analyst or person in a Season would have their own ideas, which I see as a good thing. I wish we didn't all live so far apart and I appreciate that we can talk here.

DA pink especially struck me because a lot of examples seem to only showcase warmer, almost rusty, deep terracottas and salmons as pink. Beautiful but after almost 2 years, it feels confining or boring? On my screen these examples are reading coral. They show an unexpected and welcome brightness too. (If I hadn’t seen DW and Bsp examples, I would have guessed these were one of those seasons.) They may end up reading a bit different in real life, should I ever find these in retail. Totally fine, I just know the hunt may take longer ha. I wish we all lived closer too because it’s always lovely chatting with you! Sending you hugs from the US.
There are simplifier people and multiplier people, both great ways of finding our answers and feeling well. I'm a multiplier, as you would have guessed :) Like all advice, colour interpretations are influenced by both giver and receiver and for some, this much departure from traditional DA would be too much. For others, the wider the expansion, the more interesting the process.

I loved this video! One topic I'd love to see is how to handle situations where your color choices are constrained. For me, that's professional attire which is lots of cool colors and black (I'm True Autumn) -- finding a brown or warm taupe suit can be a real challenge! Another situation might be a uniform, or a bridesmaid dress, and so on. How can we work at the edges -- or even the opposites -- of our palettes and make the best of our limited options?
Many people find themselves in this situation and the answer may depend on the particular combination of person and clothing requirement. The uniform colour is often fairly rigid, although you appear to have some flexibility with taupe suits.
My general policy is to do what I can with the options available to me and then move on. Examples might be wearing one's natural hair colour and excellent makeup (if that’s permitted), and wearing a perfect jacket to work. The consolation may be that everyone understands our clothes are a uniform and beautiful colour harmony isn’t expected. When I think of these people in my world, our relationship is so unrelated to their appearance that I barely register who looks great in the uniform colour.

She also had a phase of very light strawberry hair and it looked worse on her. But she looks amazing in black as well. I can’t even imagine her as brunette cause the red suits her so well
Thank you for introducing me to Simone. She is very beautiful and does wear red tones in hair well, some shades better than others, as you say. Her colouring seems to be on the cooler side, although I couldn't choose between Summer and Winter. With her youth and beauty, wearing makeup in most every photo, and bright hair colour, the real person becomes less available than the persona. As lovely as the pictures are, I'm not sure what I could say that would help real, ordinary people in our everyday lives, or where to begin when there are no images without the various masks. I'm glad to hear you say there are no images with natural hair colour, I couldn't find any either that weren't staged. Certainly an interesting person and great example of colouring that might be either Summer or Winter, with the answer found only by seeing her in person.

I sit myself between true and dark autumn. I look great in rich warm colours ,although I don't like the way I look in some colours of both these palettes but I look good in more colours in dark autumn but I fit the features better of the true autumn 😂🤷♀️ I just wear what colours look good on me. I look good in peach/orange colours but I don't look good in pink though but with my olive undertone I look good in dusty pink.

Welcome to the channel :) We'll get through all the colours in time.Yes, red lipstick can be exciting and for a Winter, or their natural-nude will be some variation of red or purple. Mulberry and fig are great ones for my Season. The camera, software, and computers have changed over the years, but in the last couple years, it's the same makeup in every video!
I wonder if you’d do a video on browns, tans, khakis, and taupes (I realize that’s an expansive color range, maybe it wouldn’t be like this one that includes each season but covers the differences in them to assess them better on the munsell scale)? I keep reading that espresso brown and cool taupes are on the Bright Winter palette but never see any examples of how they can best wear them.
Some colours are more of a challenge with these videos. This one about Pink is already much too long, but I prefer keeping choices broad rather than anchoring a colour in a single version in people's minds. I like your idea about covering the colours as differences, which is actually great. It would allow me to cover A vs Sp neutrals in the same video. Excellent, thank you for this.
In the meantime, you know you can purchase your neutral tones as a kit of 12, right? Or perhaps you already have them. Having the palette or video colours in your hand as real textile can be a huge step forward in understanding. Brown and taupe for BW is tricky for sure and the kit does include a few versions, possibly more than the palettes. Also, the Pinterest board may show a few options (search my name or business name).

I understand the 16 types version better, but I'd like to know why you do the 12 types version?
I like how you explane things so I'll haveto figure out if your version of "True summer" is my version of "Cool summer"
I find that it's easier with 16 types when there is: Soft summer, Light summer, Cool summer and if someone looks good in all those they are True summer and can not borrow from an opposit warm catagory. If I'm Soft summer i can borrow some thing from Soft autumn, Light summer can borrow from Light spring for example, and that makes more sence since many get confused to why they can have some warm colors being Cool. And vice verca.
It gives so much more range and more choices ♡
You're so right that different systems have their own approach, analysis process (I assume), and advice for clients. I use the 12 Season system because the approach and application seemed so sound from every perspective back when I was looking into being trained in 2009. That said, one system isn't best or perfect and other systems are not wrong, they're just different. For example, I wouldn't align with the idea that if a person looks equally good in Soft and Light Summer, they would be a True Summer. Also, I'm not sure the difference between Cool and True Summer and don't include a Summer-Winter blend in my approach. I'm not sure how other systems work or how their colour palettes are constructed but I have a notion that if the analysis process were filmed in the different systems, it would be extremely different. It can be hard for consumers to choose and I find the best approach is to choose the one that feels best while we're learning the concepts and then add whatever comes along in other systems that could enrich or expand our ideas.
@@ChristineScaman In the system they were describing the true seasons don’t exemplify the cool/warm traits of the season (so their cool winter is the same as your true winter). In that system true describes someone with a fairly even blend of the season’s 3 characteristics, which means they can’t borrow from another season like someone who’s primarily something can! But they have more room to move within their own season instead. It seems to be much less common than fitting into one of the groups you also use.
It seems that good colour analysts notice things even if they don’t neatly align with the system? It’s much more important to go to someone with a good eye than someone with my favourite system! For example I saw someone who was told they’re a true (warm) autumn but they were better off borrowing colours from dark (deep) autumn than from true (warm) spring like most people in their subgroup would. True spring was just too bright on them even though warmth was their most important characteristic. The dark autumn palette provided interesting but not overwhelming contrast as long as they kept to the warmer colours in the palette! Similarly, I like how you include colours in these videos and say things like some people from this group might be able to wear this colour while others might find it a bit too dark. The systems are made to work for people not the other way around 🥰
I am a bright winter, and my experience is that I have more flexibility wearing reds, fuschias, and pinks that may not be in my season. Do all seasons have more lattitude in their pinks? Or is it because as a winter my undertone is red violet? Or am I swayed because I love pink?😅
Are there seasons that have thsame latitude with green? I think summers might have a similar flexibility with blues and springs with yellows?
Great question and observations, though I'm not sure I have an answer. I'd guess it's a bit of everything. Where I might think Seasons have latitude with certain colour, and you, and a person in the Season could be different. I find SSu beautiful in their pinks but if there's one group where I hear "I have no reds.", it's that one, possibly because they haven't found the right red and learned to see themselves wearing it yet. Reds are a favourite for me as well, although many Winters won't wear the colour at all. I think it's related to the psychology of the colour in some kind of way. Summers accept blue and blue green effortlessly and it is effortless to see them wearing it, although perhaps less stimulating or interesting than their pinks and reds.
Thank you for another wonderful masterclass! It is interesting, because I love pinks ( and reds and purples) I find it more difficult to stick to my BW range. As long as I stay away from salmon or terracotta, i still see some resonance with my coloring and the clothes. BW pinks/fuschias are some of my best colors.
Whereas greens and yellows I get a clear "flattering" or "dear God no" 😅 Blues are in between.
Regarding lipstick, my favorite pink is MAC Girl About Town which reminds me of the BW purse with gathered fabric. My favorite red is 12 Blueprints Juliette gloss. 12 blueprints Enchanted and Pumped up are excellent as red and pink blushes.
Brilliant that you've done some thoughtful experimenting and found your mirrors and maps, your comfort and push zones and their edges, and your colour world is an abundant world to explore and reap the rewards :) I can easily picture those cosmetic colours for you, many people have compared MAC's product to 12B Maxed Out.
I also use green a lot to harmonize (technical term for 'dear God no'). Between us, I find it has two choices: great or gross.

Even as a True Summer pink is a tough one for me to get right - I have some yellow in my eyes and kind of ruddy skin - and I used to try warmer shades. Really helpful to distinguish some Winter shades as too blue or too pigmented - I wondered how anything could be too blue for a TS, but some clothing and lipstick shades really do look that way, to my eye. Glad to learn a more about that! Whole video is fascinating. Thank you for this one in particular!

Interesting I thought pink was a great color for true summers as long as its cool enough. Baby pink, ice pink, rose pink, dusty pink ect. Im a summer with deeper ash hair and pink is one of my favorites. Do you feel it brings out rudiness in your skintone?
@@Arginne Hi, Thank you for your thoughtful question. Honestly I’m not sure quite what it is…but highly pigmented blue-pink shades seem to clash with the color in my cheeks. Maybe it’s the amount of pigmentation, or maybe the overtones in my skin…or maybe I am not seeing it quite right. Still learning, and the color palette has been very helpful to me.
In general I do like and wear pink (a lot) but very bright and/or highly pigmented shades do not seem to work. Also i had to learn to select shades with enough pigment - not too dusty, and not icy.
I agree, sometimes redness in skin can happen in certain colours even in Season, perhaps more often in Summers, when colours are too dark or bright or both. Warmth will do it too, the face becomes flushed for some, whereas others don't change skin colour so much as the texture seems waxy or the natural colours discordant. Glad the video was helpful :)

Great video as always; just rewatched it. So if someone's best pink is rose, do you think it's likely they're Soft Summer? The vintage, heirloom, sentimental dried roses description of that one crushed velour is the closest I saw in this video to the type of rose I find amazing for this specific person.

I honestly don’t know what season I am. Is it possible for a brunette of warm tones to be in a cool season category? I just don't shine in orange colors, while true pinks emphasize my best natural features, but very bright pinks are too much on me, and dark muted colors drag my appearance down.
I am pale with gray-blue eyes. I have medium-dark hair that can look warm or cool. On average my brown hair doesn't look warm, but in the right light or under a salon professional I do have gold highlights and red strands. My skin tone is overall pale tan, pink, yellow. I look vibrant matching to my pink tones, I blend matching to tan tones, I look bland matching to my yellow tones. I look ill in yellowy-green-brown hybrid colors, while purple eliminates discolorations. Orange lipstick takes away from my naturally pink cheeks, while a simple tinted pink chapstick blooms my cheeks and eyes without any other makeup. I can wear gold and silver, gold blends really lovely, but silver gives me a contrast pop almost looking more glamorous. Are diamonds neutral? Because I do love to sparkle. 🙂
I'm so glad you enjoyed the video :) Pink is a colour many people love and might wear more often if they felt it was the right pink for them, compared with blue, where they don't mind about the colour. I can't comment about your Season but you've been making good observations on your own. One thought might be to disregard your hair colour in the decision. Cover it so you can only see your face. Hair colour is huge in final presentation but for Season, once you have colour harmony with your skin and eyes, your hair will be in the same great harmony. Your hair colour could be cool, warm, or neutral, as could your Season.

Excellent, helpful video! In your opinion, could a soft season simply tint brighter and lighter clothing with a grey fabric dye to make them more soft season appropriate?
It's a good question, although outside my area of expertise. I have friends who dye clothes and the resulting colour can be perfect or surprising or both :) I've also heard of Soft Seasons washing bright colours with their darks, not sure how well this works. You could try it with an inexpensive item, or a few, and practice till you get the effect you want.
Can you pls suggest where the bag for the bright winter palette is from. Indeed i love it as a bright winter 😊 would wear also the jeans jacket 😅

That's a great suggestion actually. Is the person a Summer or another Season? There are quite a few colours that don't slide easily into the Season palettes, usually blue-violets, yellow-greens, or these light soft colours, though I'm sure someone would wear them well.

I am dark winter, I have all the characteristics (high contrast, deep features on a pale complexion), but I can't use vibrant colors from my season, I just can't. Is this normal or should I look for another consultation? I feel good with the soft summer tones, but of course, I need contrast to not get washed out.
Hi and thank you for being here, I appreciate your comments :) I may not be able to answer your question without seeing you and the colour(s) you have in mind in person. It could be that particular DW bright colours worn in certain ways might be less compatible (as they might be with me). Or it's possible that the bright colours you're thinking of have been from another Season (even DW people who have your colouring and look very Winter may look drained or overwhelmed in TW or BW). Another opinion on Season might be good, but if you feel well in the more Autumn-like colours and the softer expression of DW (which is significantly softer than TW), and washed out in SSu, then DW may be the one.
One more question, have you ever seen a client who had good tolerance for at least two of the color characteristics? Perhaps even a person with good tolerance with all three characteristics? For example, good temperature tolerance and good chroma tolerance?
Perhaps all Seasons have good tolerance for 2 of the 3 colour dimensions, since in all Seasons, 2 are set around medium and the 3rd is lower or higher. Depends on your definition of good tolerance. A person with good tolerance of all 3 might depend on whom you ask. A colour analyst might say no or that one dimension is lower or higher than the others. For eg., Soft Summer's brightness tolerance is higher than just neutral tones, though lower than other Seasons' brightness.
I love this series that you're doing with the color breakdowns 🫠 it's so helpful! I am a true spring, but I still struggle identifying some of my proper tones - your yellow video helped me a lot recently too!

I love how you talk about colour. Is it possible to be between seasons, like being a soft autumn who isn’t extremely soft, or a true spring that has a neutral undertone?
Thank you! To your questions, there may be a difference in the technical meaning of 'soft' of 'neutral' and how they're measured, compared with the observations of how a person looks. In their general appearance, some people within any Season look softer than others, even the Winter groups, until their colour reactions are 'measured' with calibrated drape colours. Some Tsp or TA people look very warm, as yellow or gold or copper, some don't, but in technical terms, it doesn't make them neutral in warmth. The reverse is true as well, cool Season people can appear yellow, golden, olive, and so on, and when properly tested, they are in fact cool or cool-neutral and their apparent or surface yellow is coming from a cool palette. Please ask if I haven't quite answered your question :)
This was so informative, thank you! I have a phase for pink color now, which made me confused about my season... I always thought I was light spring, but some indicators lead me to believe I might be light summer? Those two are so "close together" I feel like, that it's really hard to pin-point what looks good and what off. Are there any tips you could give me to decide between these two? (light summer vs. light spring) For instance, I prefer a pink blush (with golden shimmer in it, so not completely cool) over a peach blush, and I prefer a rather pink lip stick over peach. But in clothing, I adore sandy pinks, yet I feel like I cannot pull off colors with more "coolness" (like an icy pink for instance).
I'm glad that you found the video helpful :) Choosing between neighbour Seasons can be challenging because they share so much in their response to colour. I don't have any tips or suggestions and even in-person with exact drapes, it can take some time to make the decision. You may find the video on the channel, Nextdoor Season Colours, useful and if you decide to wear the colours of both Light Seasons that suit you best, that would be an excellent decision.

I know I'm coming to this late, but I have a question and a request.
First, the question. There was a hot pink blouse in what I think was the first BW grouping for Winter. I'm a Bright Spring and I would probably wear that top. Would that work? It might be a little too aggressive for my season, but would it pass?
Second, would you do a video comparing neutrals that border each other? I would really benefit from a side-to-side comparison of the two Bright seasons. At one point, it would also would have been helpful to see the two Soft seasons together. My husband, who I think was a Soft Summer summer, kept veering into what was obviously Autumn and Winter. It might have been helpful if he could have seen those comparisons. He also might not have cared.
Anyway, it would be very helpful to me if you would put BW and BSp on the screen together.
As an aside, there's a thread going in the Bright Spring group on Facebook in which some people are insisting that Fuchsia isn't in our palette. I pointed out 2.8 and 2.10, but I could be wrong about that. I found it to be very interesting to hear your talk about fuchsia in Autumn. I'll pass that on.
About the BW top from the video, once we're into degrees of colours, pictures on screens, or what 'pass' means, the answer may come down to the person wearing it. I see what you're saying about 'aggressive' but I could see the colour for quite a few BSP. It's within the light-dark range and has good brightness, so BSp is happy on two out of three dimensions. From there, how sensitive is the particular person to coolness? For some people, even between neighbour Seasons, it would be a little frosty, but I could also imagine cooler fuchsias than this blouse that would be too near TW.
I've tried to put together videos comparing neutrals. Turns out that finding images isn't straightforward, and having the differences show up on screen doesn't always work, especially for very light or dark colours. I tried showing neighbour colours in the Nextdoor Seasons video, but neutrals are harder. Many folks request videos on BSp and I'm thinking about how to make something of value for viewers. SSu to SA may be easier to show since they have more pigment than W type neutrals and I'm sure I'd find more images. I'll think on it. Maybe bigger categories, like neutrals for the True Season groups. You may know that we did a podcast on neutrals for the 4 Season groups last year on chrysalis colour dot com that many folks found useful.
About the online group and fuchsia, I always like learning new names for colours. If they don't call it fuchsia, do they have other names for it?

What the difference between summer and winter. Analisys give me deep winter but the pink that is best for me (that what i see) is for true summer. How can this be possible? I have dark brown hair (in the sun is lighter) cold skin and brown hazel eyes. On the other hand bright colors dont suit me but black suit me. In really confuse. I
The difference may depend on which Summer and Winter. Overall, they're both cool but Winter is brighter (more saturated colour) and the light to dark range reaches from white and black, whereas Summer's range is narrower, doesn't reach the extremes. You do have one Season where everything makes sense, although it may be a bit longer before an analysis shows you which it is :)

I imagine this could be a good clue to one's season, if you wouldn't wear that color as a lipstick/gloss, then maybe you are not that season (?)
There is one, and only one color here I do wear on my 👄.
I haven't seen the lipstick colour clue work consistently, tbh. There is no single colour that works to identify Season, and no lipstick looks the same on every person in the same Season. I find blush a better guide because we don't apply it to pigmented skin and it has fewer personal and cultural implications, meaning blush has less latitude on the not enough-just right-too much scale, but even there, just because a colour works or doesn't isn't reliable for Season. A solid, accurate draping is the way to know and we figure out the rest from there :)

Great question. The answer is because Light Summer is a blend of Summer with Spring. Summer's colour properties are light, cool, and soft. Spring's are light, warm, and bright. When they combine, as in Light Summer, Spring contributes brightness.There's a video on the channel, Jewel Tones for Light Summer, that gives you a visual for how the colours look.

@ChristineScaman May I ask you this…I’ve done a lot of self draping and can only suspect what I may be without a professional eye but I did notice that most pinks seem to make me look sick or tired while I seem to pull off a wide variety of greens. Is there a season that tends to favor green this way?
I read your question yesterday and found it so interesting, one I haven't been asked, and I've been thinking about it since. I would guess most people would say the opposite about pink and green, possibly from taste, emotion, or popularity of the colour, but your previous comments have seemed independent of those. Unfortunately, I'm still getting a blank. In the most general possible way, meaning don't give this any importance, Soft Summers can be iffy about pink and red, and put them in the right pine green, they bring people to tears. I wouldn't describe them wearing 'a wide variety of greens' though, so who would? Warmer Seasons, possibly, depending on the brightness?
I’m sure that in a controlled setting the greens that don’t work as well would be more obvious, there is definitely more surface harmony with some than others, some are obviously too bright or light, but there aren’t too many that are overly offensive the way there are with other colors. Honestly I remember being 7 years old and wondering why all the pinks didn’t look good on me the way they did on other little girls. I either look sick, tired, or like I’m wearing children’s clothing in most pinks. Some of the soft ones work, some don’t. At this point I think I’m either a very neutral soft or a very mousey dark. Every time I think I have it something changes my mind. At least I have it narrowed down I guess, and it’s easy being green. One day I will know for sure.
Makes sense to me as well. Neutral warmth, mid-brightness, a Soft or Dark Season possibly. I hope you have your answer soon :)

Thanks for sharing this experience. There are many colours we wear well as clothing but unlike clothing, makeup is applied directly to skin and intended to look like skin. While lip colour has wide latitude in cultural acceptance, blush in most cultures is expected to look natural, healthy, but not particularly noticeable in its own right. From the many red options in the palette, I find the light-medium neutral reds suit most people best. The warm and cool edges of the reds for SSu don't blend into the face as well, and the same for the darker reds. Gorgeous as clothing, meaningful and nuanced, but for blush, I prefer the more medium warmth and value choices.

Много обичам розовия цвят и вече без проблем разпознавам в магазина дали един е цвят е с добавено сиво или не, но имам сериозен проблем да различа дали цветът си е променил температурата и вече се намира в групата цветове на Soft Autumn, а е излязъл от групата на Soft Summer. Една част от показаните неща в двата сезона просто ми изглеждат еднакви като цвят, а едва ли са. Предполагам, че и другите преходни сезони имат подобен проблем, ако мислим цвета като скала от плюс към минус. Благодаря!

Glad you enjoyed the video :) You might find the video Nextdoor Season Colours helpful. I think most people, me included, would have trouble knowing if an item had moved to another Season based on temperature. I would have to try a few tests, like comparing with other palette colours as we talked about here and making outfits, which I may find the most useful to all. If a pink has left SSu and moved into SA, it will look belonging with the SA warmer tones and hard to wear with the SSu cool tones. From the Nextdoor Seasons video, 'you tell them apart in the places they're different'. Between SSu and SA, brightness and darkness are too similar to be useful for differentiating, but earthy colours, neutrals, lipsticks (reds), and whites might help.

Right, there are reference points in our natural hair colour or certain colours we wear that we know are in our harmony. Might as well use them!

You're not alone, it's a lot of words and pictures compressed into a short time and space. In 1-2 days, the images and script will be up on my website and you can take you time to absorb the content. The link will be in the Desc. box. Some people open the blog post in 2 separate windows, with the image on one side and text on the to her, so they can read along without scrolling up and down.
Hi, I am learning so much from you and have your book which I love. I have a question about being able to tell if you are a true or soft summer. I am not sure you can answer and that is okay. All the true summer make up is working for me which says something to me but I understand you cannot rely on that. Unfortunately I have thought I was a winter for a long time and do not have much summer clothes right now. However, when I do test between soft and true summer, with soft I notice some redness in my cheeks. Is that good or bad? You don't have to answer my true summer fan is on the way and I am trying to obtain a soft summer one right now and eventually I will figure out what I am looking for. Thank you.
I'm so happy to hear that the book and videos are helping you :) A Season decision is based on many optical effects and observations, meaning that a single point of data, such as red cheeks, wouldn't lean the decision towards or away from a Season. We would look for Big Picture and Small Picture details combined to arrive at the choice or elimination. We're really just looking for the truth of your colouring, and if you have flushed cheeks or redness in a blemish, then you do. We could reduce their appearance with certain colours, but altering our natural colours would always come with a price, for example, loss of facial contour or draining of colour elsewhere in the features. The video on the channel, Nextdoor Season Colours, may offer some ideas, but once Seasons are this close, it can be quite challenging just with items of clothing, let alone an actual person. Even trained analysts with perfectly calibrated colour drapes may find this among the more challenging decisions.

I think so and can see my confusion but I have been all over the map and started with Dark Winter. I want to see a Sci/Art analyst really badly but cannot afford it and it was my daughter who sees me in person who pointed me in the direction of Bright Winter.
Summer and Winter colours share coolness, and for BW, this lighter type of Winter brings their palette value range closer to Summer. Also for BW, colours can resemble brighter versions of Light Summer, which is the brighter Summer. In how the people look, some have medium brown hair and blue eyes, which can resemble the colouring of some Summers. So to answer your question, yes, there are similarities in the colour properties and how some of the people appear. I hope you're able to have the analysis experience one day, you ask great questions and would love seeing your answers come to life :)

Yes, I agree it would look better. With software though, colours are brightened unevenly and black seems to cause the least fluctuations (and the quietest look in the thumbnail images). Light and bright colours are extremely bright, almost glowy. Also, when I meet clients, I wear gray and no jewelry, to keep my appearance as quiet as possible, and the videos are the same in trying to keep all the attention on the colours or image we're discussing rather than myself. With videos, viewers would see what I'm wearing on the same screen as the images and I wonder if it might be distracting. I figure the more neutral I am, the better.
