  • Even though most of people support public education it has often limited access and is not always as inclusive as it should be. Felix Ohswald will reflect about the importance of public-private partnerships for the future of education.
Felix Ohswald is the Co-Founder and CEO of GoStudent, the Vienna-based digital learning platform that provides tailored and high quality video-based tuition to primary, secondary and college-aged students. In November 2020, Felix was featured in the Forbes “30 under 30” list.
In 2015, GoStudent started out as a homework chat service, managed via WhatsApp. At first, it involved support that Felix provided for his younger brother’s classmates. Felix quickly became the go-to expert for the students and the volume of messages he was receiving kept growing. It was clear that there was a systemic lack of support for these students, so he decided to address this issue and inspire a passion for learning to the students that matched his own.
What started as a homework chat group evolved into a revolutionary 1:1 tutoring platform, where students receive tailored support by being paired with the best teacher for them, regardless of geographical location.
Founded in 2016, the EdTech scale-up is now active in 23 countries. GoStudent has more than 1,800 employees and has opened 24 international offices. Currently, GoStudent works with 19,000 international tutors, with more than 1.5 million tutoring sessions getting booked per month. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I wish that he had touched on how/ if public-private partnerships differ from charter schools which have been ineffective in the US. I am also curious to know if this is simply one step further in implementing a neoliberal educational policy.

Charter schools have been an incredible success

@@seventhcompactor1505 well there's always criticism on charter schools being privately operated even though it's gov funded. It's successful only in the business sense.

A parent should be allowed to choose.
      Many public schools are horrible.

It is funny that his business is actually making enormous profits from education. It should never be an activity in which some people (shareholders) are able to profit from something. Furthermore Gostudent actually contributes to stronger inequality as only few parents are able to afford the private tutoring. In stead of truely supporting schools they are strengthening a poor system...

You're right. He said he aims to bring education ALL-INCLUSIVE but his examples only described physical barriers and not the wealth gap. He should rephrase it to "bring education MORE INCLUSIVE and adapt to online learning" and definitely not all-inclusive because that's too idealistic and not possible. Education will never be all-inclusive in a predominantly capitalist society. His company is just like any other private online tutoring platform exploiting the poor public education system bc public education is not great since it fails to meet the standards of higher education and post-secondary institutions (universities). His idea is not new and not unique bc we have an entire market for private tutoring from freelancers on platforms. His company success is mostly attributed to his marketing and business model.
(Edit) Also he just discontinued his online tutoring platform services in Canada. His company recently moved their offices out of Canada to the UK and they are no longer recruiting new freelancer tutors or student clients. They should also at least let their clients know about discontinuing services and not just letting the tutors know. I guess doing business in North America is hard.

Wrong. Parents who obtain private tutoring for their kids, are being great parents.
The real issue here are horrid parents, who pop out kids they can't afford. Then, they expect 'the system' to fix their mistake. It won't

@@simon2046 Education is already inclusive. Every legal person gets a free K-12. That's it.

@@simon2046 80% of the US are not meant for universities. They simply are not bright enough. (it may be 90%)

@@seventhcompactor1505 true for most part of the world but public education K-12 is not the best at actually preparing for university. Just having a high school diploma is not good enough nowadays. A lot of parents had to spend extra on private tutoring to actually teach the students well because a lot of the public school teachers are not the best at teaching the materials. This problem is also compounded with the surge of inflating grades at the secondary level. The title is ironic public education is not really driving inequality, it's more of the private tutoring that does and this man who owns the online private tutoring company is exacerbating this inequality of access of "better" education.
