Manisha Koirala: Bhansali wanted to cast Kajol or Madhuri Dixit in Khamoshi; Sharmin Segal on trolls

- Manisha Koirala has delivered a fantastic performance as Mallikajaan in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's HeeraMandi that released on Netflix earlier this week. The 8-episode series has Manisha playing a matriarch and she portrays gamut of emotions with extreme ease and perfection. In this conversation on Galatta India, with host Nayandeep Rakshit, she's joined by her two co-stars Sanjeeda Shaikh and Sharmin Segal. From discussing how she's always been a rebel to revealing why she rejected Karisma Kapoor's role in Shah Rukh Khan starrer Dil To Pagal Hai, because she felt insecure of Madhuri Dixit, Manisha is honest as ever. She also recalls how she became friends with SLB on the sets of Vidhu Vinod Chopra's 1942 A Love Story where he was an assistant and how his plan of casting Kajol or Madhuri Dixit for his debut directorial Khamoshi didn't work and eventually she did the iconic film. Apart from her, Sanjeeda Shaikh reveals how she had to say no to Saraswatichandra which was initially offered to her. Sharmin also reminisced her times when she dealt with body image issues and how Heeramandi gave her the confidence to deal with it. All this and more in this interview.

Which character did you like the most in Heeramandi and why?
Mallikajaan.. such depth and we can see all that the character has gone through in her scenes even in her dialogues

Ikr...she was getting typecasted in the same role of the "loud, chirpy, high-pitched, bubbly" girl in romcoms under the banner of Yash Raj or Dharma with Gupt and Fanaa being the exceptions. Let's just admit that she wouldn't have been such a big name without the support of KJo and the Chopras.

Yes but her destiny is warped with misfortune in her personal life. For a beautiful talented lady like her she should have easily been married happily with children but that’s not the case. If you look at Madhuri dixit who is from the same era the destinies are completely different. Basically Manisha is simply a very good actress and that’s as far as it goes for her

Both Kajol and Madhuri Dixit are very super facial and paid actresses. Manisha Koirala is matchless when we compare her performances with both these actresses. Kajol was Karan Johar's friend, Madhuri was Subash Ghai and then she came under Yash Raj umbrella...these two powerhouses made Kajol and Madhuri Mega Stars. But Manisha only her acting and performances made her a legend. She is the Naseer Ud Deen Shah of Bollywood and even Tamil Cinema.
We saw Madhuri and Manisha together in Lajja where Manisha Koiral was the main protagonist in the movie and Manisha really proved her self that she is far better than Madhuri in acting and she even did justice while dancing with Madhuri in Badi Mushkil Baba Badi Mushkil....
then also we saw Manisha Koirala in Gupt along with Kajol where Kajol was playing the role of a vamp and a daughter of a keeper in Boby Deol's house and Manisha was Boby Deol's actual heroine and off course the movie's lead heroine....
I never like Kajol and Madhuri because they were raised and supported by mega film production houses..Kajol specially is a perfect epitome of nepotism, while for Madhuri Dixit i guess she is just a good movie dancer with same type of dancing moves which over the years we all have become bored off.

Because the screenplay was really engaging, SRV is a talented person and an egoistic man as well, those scenes in the movie were to create controversy, because you see that the cheating sequence and bra strap scene made no sense and contributed nothing to the story.

Also it is a man's world where 99% of total wealth is owned by men, 80% movies are male centric, they have power, money and much more, if we want to see more good movies we have to support good movies cuz at the end of the day it's all business and filmmakers need money.

Manisha is the best for this role Madhuri would have not folded off because she would and still has that attitude of trying to be pretty. Kajol May have been able to pull it off but it may take a lot of work. If Manisha refused the wrong the only other person who could have done it would have been rehka no doubt

Why can’t you take criticism? You feel everyone is against you, trolling you but NOOOO. Being a SLB fan, i am really disappointed with Sharmin’s acting. SLB created some characters where the role is silent, introvert, non talkative. But because of the expression of those actresses those characters are epic. But sharmin didn’t act even close to a SLB heroine. I am truly disappointed because she had so much scope to make this an exceptionally beautiful series. Her character was such beautifully written but WHY WHY WHYYYYY??? She ruined the series for me. Everything except her in the series was superb.

Madhuri would have looked ridiculous as Annie in Khamoshi. Her face is very rough. Like she doesn't have that softness like Manisha to pull off that role. No offense. Madhuri is an incredible actress but she would be a case of bad casting in Khamoshi. Kajol could have pulled it off coz she has that Goan catholic look and she could look perfect as the daughter of Seema Biswas and Nana's character but I guess she was not ready to take on a challenging role plus Tanuja kinda had a beef with Sanjay.. But I feel the role was meant for Manisha. She was perfect as Annie..

Karisma Kapoor’s role in DLPH was offered to many actresses and all of them rejected it. I only remember this because I was that crazy Bollywood fan in my teenage years haha. I think it went Juhi, Urmila and Manisha before it went to Karisma. At that point Raja Hindustani wasn’t released and Karisma hasn’t become the bigger star she was after that. While Urmila was post Rangeela, Manisha already fame for 1942 ALS and Bombay while Juhi Chawla no explanation needed. None wanted to play second field to Madhuri, by then her career was dying. Post DTPH Madhuri didn’t really have any hits.

Manisha Koirala worked with the three big Khans and outshone them all! Be it Khamoshi with Salman Khan, Dil Se with Shah Rukh Khan, or Akele Hum Akele Tum with Aamir Khan, she was better than the three men in those movies. As for Madhuri, Manisha is miles ahead of Madhuri in acting. All Madhuri did was dance and dance. She is very limited in acting. Manisha should not feel sad that she didn't do Dil To Pagal Hai because that is one of the worst Yash Chopra movies. I don't even understand what the Indian audience was thinking, making this silly dumb movie a hit!
