  • CRPGs are great, and Tyranny is no different. Interesting world, well written character, and grand scale - Tyranny has it all. It may not be perfect, but the Overlord demands you play it.

Tyranny is one of the best CRPGs I've played. Its strongest point for me was its plot and narrative.

This still has my favorite magic system in in any game like this. Most of the time in games like this I split up magic and physical but I can't help but go full magic here.

@@InMaTeofDeath Totally agree. More people should know about the magic here. It's so much fun and rivals some of the best crpgs out there!

This game needs a sequel. It's just so damn good.

yea but sadly obsidian CRPGs despite being very good have a habit of not selling. Tyranny and pillars of eternity 2 undersold.
i guess not everyone can afford a shill campaign like the one that boosted boulders gate 3 sales

Most of the time I'm a "one and done" kinda dude. I love a good game and when it's a great game, I'd rather have the legacy preserved with a single entry, then muddied with unnecessary sequels (I'm looking at you Dragon Age).
BUT! Tyranny leaves a lot of room for a worthy sequel. The end of the game is just the beginning of the real fight.
The magic system is the most immersive and creative since early Morrowind and Oblivion.
I really liked the world and the characters. In so much that I can't do another run that's not the one I have done. You know, the one in which you kneel to no one.
Even though the game is a lot bigger then I have experienced, it still completely satisfied me with a craving for more.

Totally agree. I would rather the rest of the story left up to personal interpretation, rather than a shoehorned sequel that isn't as good

I fell in love with Tyranny years ago when I first opened the game and got my ears blown by that first horn blast.

I think mandaloregaming explains that Chiros(?) Has the power of paradigm, which is probably why he/she is extremely vague...

I'm pretty sure that Kyros's vagueness and laws surrounding attribution are an attempt to prevent themselves from becoming an archon, or to limit the negative effects of being an archon.

As much as the magic system is the backbone of the game and one of the coolest parts, I think it'd be amiss not to talk about the reputation system which is absolutely amazing and I wish more games used it.
Having a meter for both positive and negative feelings at the same time makes so much more sense. I wish more games used this, not to mention gaining new abilities and powers from it is also really cool and makes a lot of sense too.
It's something that Fallout: New Vegas never quite committed to fully. They had the reputation system and there were names for reputation spots you can only get if you do both good and bad, but there wasn't much mechanical impact to it. I feel like the Tyranny reputation system would've been an amazing fit for New Vegas too.

The Owlcat CRPGs are all fantastic both Pathfinder games and Rogue Trader. The same team that worked on Tyranny also made Pillars of Eternity 1 and 2 so you may like those I haven't tried them yet though so can't personally vouch for them.

@GodOfOrphans After Tyranny, I've definitely got my eye on both Pilliars games. I'm currently in the middle of Wrath of the Rightous, and boy is that game complicated!

@@posttiggle Tell me about it I finished my first Wrath playthrough back in April, even with the prior experience I had from Kingmaker I still spent several hours just debating about how to build during level ups on more than one occasion, I've probably spent an entire 24 hours combined just on analysis paralysis during level ups and mythic level ups in that game in just the one playthrough lol. Still I can't say I didn't enjoy figuring it out despite the time it took and I'm quite proud of how my build ultimately turned out, but good lord was it one of the most exhausting experiences I've ever had with a game.

It's fun if you like something short with a lot of alternate paths and endings that lets you replay it a lot. (You could say the same about the magic system, in a way.) Definitely caters to a certain play style where you're less concerned with difficulty than branching narrative, but it's good if you're not looking for a long RPG that's a massive number of hours per playthrough.

    • @posttiggle
      @posttiggle  Місяць тому +1

@MAlanThomasII Totally! It has enough per playthrough to be satisfying, but the game isn't so long that you feel burnt out afterward!

3:52 - I think this is just a remnant of video game history talking.
    Why do anything else?
This isn't like old games where mage and warrior are distinct classes you can go down, all classes are mages here. You want to be a warrior that fights in melee combat? There's spells that help with that. You want to be a ranged assassin with a bow? There's spells that help with that. You want to be a massive tank that absorbs all damage? There's spells that help with that.
Spells are what you use no matter what you want to do, all classes are mages, what makes them different is HOW you build them. There's a LOT of customization you can do in this game, you can build characters in a huge amount of ways and you can use a lot of different strategies, the combinations are nearly endless.
I built Landry as a tank and he was an amazing paladin-esque heavy armored frontline combatant capable of healing and absorbing damage for example. You wouldn't think of him as a paladin when you first meet him, he's a scrawny guy with a quil, but you can absolutely build him as a tank+healer combo. I also build him as full on range dps with his quils once and that worked great too.
One of my most broken OP combinations was weapon enchantments that create a wave of power after physical attacks placed on characters that have multi-attack abilities. Without multi-attakcs it's just a wave every few seconds, it's decent damage but nothing spectacular, but with the right target and build, you can release 6 waves of power in 1 second. You can destroy entire lines of enemies, but you need the physical abilities for the spell to work to its full potential.
