As a lifelong lover of music and songwriters, what a blessing in the last years of my life to discover Tom Waits’ music. I knew who he was but never paid much attention. What beautiful melodies and poetry! I am about to be 74 years old and depressed at seeing my life slip away. His lyrics, though sometimes sad, bring me comfort. “I’m gonna take it with me when I go.”
I think Tom is 74 also. Although known for melancholic melodies, if you scratch a little deeper his work is quite funny and even absurd but ultimately beautiful and this is how I think of him seeing life. And maybe also he gets sad and that's ok. He might say it's a privilege to get to a seventieth decade when existential forboding sounds quite natural. And also quite beautiful. And maybe also quite absurd,. But there's always the music and what a great joy and privilege it is, for me to live in a time when folks like Tom get to do their thing and folks like us get to ride the bus with them. I'd say he gets an unimaginable feeling of contentment, or joy maybe, having his work bring even one person 'comfort', that's beautiful. Without someone to appreciate it, there is no art. We all have our roles to play. The role of the audience is as sacred as the performance because we get to take it with us when we go, and noone can take that away. All the blessings.
On the road to where I work, there was an empty house for about 10 years. Rumors about it being in family court, with nobody getting along. Then, one Monday, the house was gone. So sad.
Beautiful song from a great album. Timeless.

Nice!@@declanmills
Beautiful sentiment.
Keep on to life. Never slips. Be a good person, be nice, smile, help other persons, lend a hand if needed.
I was in the studio audience for this!
Tom Waits writes the best songs, and sings them with more heart than any songwriter I've ever experienced. He is a natural classic!
He writes like Steinbeck and Hemingway, beautiful and awesome.
definitely!

Tom Waits is an American Treasure. Poet, singer, songwriter, actor. Love!❤️
Waits is a scientist when it comes to music and song!
Listening to people like Waits and Joni in my early teens taught me how to write creatively. Thanks Tom...you've been influential in many ways.
Every time I hear this song I am blown away. The lyrics are just incredible. He's amazing

My favourite compilation is the entire catalogue of Mr Waits’ appearances on Late Night with David Letterman. Probably because Jay Leno ain’t on it.
