Funny thing about jazzmaster guitars is that they've never been really used by a bunch of jazz players. Modern Indie rockers used it more than anyone else.
FANTASTIC review! Most helpful and LOVE the song choice. This review introduced me to Swervedriver. As a huge '90s rock fan, I don't know how I hadn't heard of them before.
@occupiedbytim We started with the 65Amp Soho and people wanted to hear a common, affordable, cleaner amp. Aside from the fact that it takes pedals very well, the DRRi was the winner in our viewer's vote for the next demo amp, about a year ago. Thanks, -PGS Crew
Oh Jazzmaster! How I love thine awesomeness! Let me count the ways! Great playing as always, and good showing of the Jazz' wide tone range. I'd love to hear some Dinosaur JR on that! And this may be controversial, but Jazzmaster > Strat
I've had one of these for nearly a year now after lusting for one for years. It's fantastic, although it's not perfect. I fixed a lot of the problems I had with it by raising the action, since the action it came with was absurdly low, and I changed the tuners to some Gotoh locking tuners that were made to be direct replacements for the top-loading Klusons that come stock, since I really, really hated those tuners with a passion. They worked great, but they're hard as hell to change strings on.
This one kind of does. These pickups are constructed with steel screws and two reverse facing magnets underneath. The magnet wire probably still retains the short and wide shape of a Jazzmaster pickup, but other than that these classic player pickups are more or less p90's. Most models of Jazzmaster though do have AlNiCo magnet poles, in which case you would be right on the money.
Thinking maybe you had a factory defect. I've had mine for about 7 months now and I've not yet had an issue with it. I'm curious to know what problems you encountered
Hey first of all the reviews are always really instructive and fun to watch, thaks a lot ! Second of all,are the Jazzmaster pickups able to handle distortion ?
@pangtjoff - We're planning on making PGS Rock available as soon as we get the chance. We'll most likely have it for streaming / downloading purposes on our Facebook page. Thanks again! -PGS Crew
Hey Proguitarshop.. that tone from 0:28 - 1:07.. I wish I could bottle it up and keep it forever. Through my Grado SR80's it sounds absolutely stunning. Obviously you were using the Fuzz Factory, but did you have the Kalamazoo on as well? What is the name of the song you play out with as well, and who penned it? I love the descending chords, they sound beautiful, man.
@Noseheros Yeah I suppose that's true in some ways. The sparkle of a strat is always nice to hear, and sounds good for dynamics with finger picking and such. I just usually find the Jazzmaster to feel more refined and have a slightly wider tonal range, only slightly, but it does give it a fair advantage. Plus Jazz's feel more comfortable, and feels just about the right shape for sitting. Most strat fanboys feel the need to disagree with me, but I don't care, lol. It's all good really :)
Andy, do you use a pick or are you just strumming with your fingers? You switch so fast between strumming and fingerpicking that it would seem almost impossible to tuck your pick away somewhere. If you do thats pretty amazing!
Vacuum tube amplifiers have a tendency to break up a little when a guitar has hot pickups such as this one. When he played with the neck pickup, it was squeaky clean.
what are the pickups and the neck radios in the regular jazzmaster? and why is 9.5 inch is better? plus what about the going out of tune with this guitar? lots og whammy bar usage. i guess its built accordingly ?
You've got to release the music played in the "talk about the instrument" part of your videos! I love the piece played in this video. And some of the newer pieces too... Really cool stuff, it's a shame I can only hear fractions of it everytime :( Oh, nice guitar by the way :)
@METSAVEND9 go and try one out at a guitar shop if you possibly can, it's always best to get a feel for the instrument, bring your own amp and maybe your own fx pedals if you own any, to see how it sounds through them, or test it out with a comparable amp at the shop
I came onto youtube to listen to "Hate It Here" by Wilco... but in my opinion I'd rather listen to the first minute of this video... it's just that epic
Hi there! i have a question, recently i bought a fender blacktop Jazzmaster, it sounded nice, but the bridge had this huge problem: the first string jumps out of the bridge if you bend it on the higher frets, i tried to calibrate, use different strings, etc and the problem was not giving up, i would like to know if this one has that same problem? i will really apreciate your feedback! thanx.
@DeadWhiteButterflies I kinda agree in some ways, its great for jazz (duuh) and harder rock than a strat, but a strat can do country and funk a little better, I love them both, I plan on getting an AMSTD strat and loading it with Kinman Woodstock Pup's and K7 harness and probably one of these Jazzmasters
@METSAVEND9 The Jazzmaster and Jag are probably the main Indie guitars. I have a Jazzy, their great, but they're actually extremely bright. When the Volume is full on the bridge pickup it hurts my ears.
@mendez2050 I played one of these through an AC30C2 the other day and they sounded perfect for each other. The amp Andy is playing in this vid sounds to me like a Fender Hot Rod series amp. Blues Jr. III is a great amp too. You can't go wrong with either one.
SWERVEDRIVER! This demo dude has gone up in my books 100,000,000 %
Funny thing about jazzmaster guitars is that they've never been really used by a bunch of jazz players. Modern Indie rockers used it more than anyone else.
Rave Down by Swervedriver! Possibly my favourite indie chord progression ever
This guitar is me all over. I can't believe how beautiful the tones you're getting are, especially running high gain through the bridge pick-up.
Andy is so awesome. Playing a little Wilco at the beginning. That is so cool.
3:18 Rave Down... NICEEEE
Man that riff at the end is pure genius
The Classic Player series are truly great. I love my 50's Strat and this Jazzmaster sounds lovely.
FANTASTIC review! Most helpful and LOVE the song choice. This review introduced me to Swervedriver. As a huge '90s rock fan, I don't know how I hadn't heard of them before.
I love the cp jazzmaster. I bought a squier j mascis body and used classic player parts to build a custom white cp. thanks stratosphere for the parts.
dude, whenever you play those are always the best demos! You let the guitar speak qo powerful and completely in its own voice, luv it (y)

And this may be controversial, but Jazzmaster > Strat
Rave Down by Swervedriver... all of their albums are great
Great! I love your way of playing 'Rave Down' by Adam Franklin and Swervedriver!!
Yes. I have one of these and it fits in a standard road runner gig bag.
This guy introduced me to shoegaze and noise with that (fucking brilliant) song. Can't thank him enough !
Swervedriver - Rave Down...nice touch!
I'm loving everything Andy's playing in this video. The guitar sounds great!
Yet again you've introduced me to a new great band Andy. Thank you!
2:00
bow to you, Sir Andy.
God it gives me shivers when i hear the sound of a guitar with no pick ~_~
Lovin' the Wilco intro!!!

Swevedriver excellent . Also I love Jazzmasters and your videos. Great job.
Ah! Wilco!
Great taste as always!
Tone so delicious I could just grab it and eat it! Especially those chords...
Love the melody he starts to play at 3:18 :)
Wilco and Diamond Head on a Jazzmaster in the same vid? I'm in heaven!
Excellent demo! I love the clear punchy rock tone on it. What amp did you use in this demo?
Loving the Wilco action all day long, hats off dude.

OH MY GOD THAT TONE!!!!
Diggin' the Ventures
A lot of people use the Jazzmaster because of its ability to connect well with pedals.
Thinking maybe you had a factory defect. I've had mine for about 7 months now and I've not yet had an issue with it. I'm curious to know what problems you encountered

Yeah so do I ! Good guitarist too.
I just got one a few weeks ago; it plays like a dream!!! And good to hear a little shoegaze coming out of this review 3:17 !
yep he does a funky strumming thing on it in the video
Sweet guitar playing..
Swervedriver!!!! RAVEEEEEE DOWN!
I am saving for one of these babies :)
Nie review.
that song in the backround is amazing haha
I love it when you play Swervedriver.
thats a big solidbody
I must have one of these. Great demo
awesome demo and demo guitarist

Woah, did not expect to hear Swervedriver on a guitar demo video. Nice catering to your audience! :D
Danm I really want this now
Hey, its my guitar!
i love it :D
@Noseheros

Gotta love Diamond Head :)
At the beggining of the demo when Andy is doing the jam, is the combination of the Fuzz Factory and the Kalamazoo used?
I, on the other hand, want to hear how it handles fuzz and overdrive. So, great review for my taste.
s'rather apparent that PGS has victorious taste in music.
Vacuum tube amplifiers have a tendency to break up a little when a guitar has hot pickups such as this one. When he played with the neck pickup, it was squeaky clean.
hot sound!
gotta play some wilco/nels cline while demoing a JM!
Thurston Moore.

Oh, nice guitar by the way :)
is the distortion you used for "Rave Down" from the amp itself or from the kalamazoo or both?
Does this bridge corrects the issue Jazzmaster players have with the vintage one? The one about strings jumping off the bridge when hit hard
@METSAVEND9 go and try one out at a guitar shop if you possibly can, it's always best to get a feel for the instrument, bring your own amp and maybe your own fx pedals if you own any, to see how it sounds through them, or test it out with a comparable amp at the shop

@mcatling Yeah! Adam Franklin is a great jazzmaster player!!
Would you recommend this over the Blacktop model for Alternative/Indie rock sounds?
which distortion is he using at 3:20?
Swevedriver excellent
what chords are you using in the melody at the end of the vid?
sounds awesome! :)
@DeadWhiteButterflies I kinda agree in some ways, its great for jazz (duuh) and harder rock than a strat, but a strat can do country and funk a little better, I love them both, I plan on getting an AMSTD strat and loading it with Kinman Woodstock Pup's and K7 harness and probably one of these Jazzmasters
whats the song playing in the background during the description from 1:10 to 2:00? It's in a lot of PGS demos, really cool song, someone help me out!
@METSAVEND9 The Jazzmaster and Jag are probably the main Indie guitars. I have a Jazzy, their great, but they're actually extremely bright. When the Volume is full on the bridge pickup it hurts my ears.
What's the best amp option for this guitar? Vox AC15C1 or Fender Blues Jr. III?
nice wilco in the beginning
Andy, can you please tell me how you learned to play guitar like that?
The sounds at the end are great, so creamy...
Hey, does this guitar go out of tune quicker than, say, a Strat?
Can I ask what the first songs was ? 0:00 - 0:28 ?
whats the riff at 2:00?
Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plus top vs Fender Jazzmaster?
@ygmarchi It's actually Rave Down
First 30 seconds were beautiful... was that a song or just a jam?
any big difference between this and the blacktop? besides the price? thanks
song at 1:08 that's playing in background while he's talking, what is that?
@BrucePetty I'm with Bruce ^^
hey can u guys find a fender blacktop p bass and demo it? i want to know if it would be a good buy!
jazzmaster :-) love its sound!nice demo!what's the song at the beggining of the video?good job anyway!
Wich is the surf rock song Andy plays at 2:26 ?
3:17 is some good tone!!!
Does this guitar have a good sustain?
@mendez2050 I played one of these through an AC30C2 the other day and they sounded perfect for each other. The amp Andy is playing in this vid sounds to me like a Fender Hot Rod series amp. Blues Jr. III is a great amp too. You can't go wrong with either one.
Hi I was wondering if you'll do any reviews on Squier guitars. Thanks.. :)
youre a great player!
