Who would win in a fight: Me or Betty Crocker?
duncan hines
It depends...is it in frilly aprons? ...
sorry bud my money's on betty
@@tasticola well then obviously Jonny 🙄
You Jonny.
All the hacks summed in this video
1. Add an extra egg than the box recipe
2. Swap the water with milk, one to one ratio
3. Half the oil, and the other half use butter
4. Use sour cream for tangyness
Note: I did 1-3, but i left the 1/4 cup oil and also added 1/4 cup butter, with no sour cream/pudding, and it tasted pretty good! No one realized it was box mix :)
Good Luck Baking!
Thanks because I don’t want tangy cake unless it’s lemon
What kind of oil?
i usually use vegetable oil when baking@@adkqueen
Thank you!!!
@@Andreasplace it honestly doesn't make it tangy I can never taste it but it makes it very moist and slightly denser and richer
"I'm lactose intolerant." Proceeds to add butter and sour cream 😂
No so real omg
@@thejonnycakes I found the best lactose free sour cream
I'm Lactose intolerant and also a food masochist. Some days I just have to plan to be at home in my soft pajamas with baby wipes. Pizza is an evil mistress that I can't quit. 🥹
Hi Jonny! You’ll be excited to know In some areas (like Ontario where I live!), you can actually buy most dairy products now as lactose free - not only milk, cream, and butter, but sour cream, cheddar cheese, mozzarella… it’s very helpful! My advice is to buy on sale with a far out expiration date (filtered is best for this) and/or freeze if you can. Loblaws hands down as the MOST lactose free products (though most Canadian dairy companies have now caught up). The other cheat is specifically cultured, old, or non-pasteurized cheeses (think France) are naturally lactose free thanks to the bacteria and enzymes present. Anyways, all the best as a fellow lactose intolerant person! 😊
@arulasuniverse I'm lactose intolerant also but can Bake with these ingredients and it doesn't bother me like have just milk.
I always considered a box cake to be home made. I made it at home.
we be delusional and I like it !
That’s what i meannn!!! It is still homemade haha
Yeah 😅
😂😂
"For legal purposes..." 😂 I'm an attorney and this tickled me.
I love the concept of this video so much; it reminds me of when I was in college. I was the go-to birthday cake maker and would make box chocolate cake. I added heavy cream in the batter, would make a ganache with some half-price holiday candy (the sales!!!) and add that to the mix to make it a bit fudgey, and a few other tweaks. *Not* a structurally sound cake, but it was so good for pretty cheap. I'm going to have to try your recipe! 😊
Omg amazing I love that
absolutely loved this video! more basic baking videos please!
You got it!
Another solid hack for chocolate cake is to use a chocolate pudding packet!
And hot coffee or instant coffee grounds next level
Or coffee.
i read a little instant coffee can accentual the chocolate flavor more. Also I read in the 1930's to cut down on the price of using so much chocolate, people added in a smashed up tomato in their chocolate cake. People got inventive in the depression.
How long do you freeze the cake for a party the next day. Also, can you do this with cup cakes?
Glad you mentioned sour cream! Def a great hack. Love knowing about the other substitutes and tips! 🎉
So happy ur here!
@@thejonnycakes Why aren’t you the new 4th Try Guy?! I feel like you’d try anything once! Like have the Try Guys tried beekeeping, or jello wrestling, or skydiving or wire walking or making high end piñatas? I also think you and Miles could make the 4th and 5th try guys, that way onr could be away doing something else, and you’d still have four!
I love strawberry cake. When I was a kid, I always wanted strawberry cake with strawberry frosting and the clear yellow sprinkles. I used to have that every birthday for years.
It looks like Jonny measured like Eugene
Very that
🤣🤣🤣
Jonny measures with his heart but Eugene measures with his dark dark soul.
@@sunnymcgie but you got agree Jonny has to have dark side his happy body
I made this tonight using a strawberry Betty Crocker mix it was delicious and moist. Thanks for these great tips.❤❤❤
Jonny needs his own tv show already so I can binge 😩😩
Will you come bake with me? 📺
I mean he’s in “Is It Cake?” on Netflix so…..Does that even count lol
The fact i was introduced to you by the try guys and now you’re one of my favs! Learning to up my baking so ty! 😊
I already do milk and butter swap with the extra egg but if Im using yellow, white or butter cake mix I also add a bit of vanilla extract to make the flavor little more smooth
I’ve seen lots of doctored boxed cake videos so i just came here for the giggles, but omg I learned a few tweaks I haven’t learned from other bakers!!! AAAAND I got comedy in the process??? Bra👏vo👏
I’m so happy to hear that! Thanks for stopping by.
You’re hilarious! I’m hooked.
I have a solid chocolate cake recipe I’ve been using for years, but despite trying dozens of white/yellow/vanilla scratch recipes, I’ve never found one that I prefer more than doctored General Mills white cake mix 🤷🏼♀️ I’m a firm believer in using a box mix as long as the icing is from scratch, never had a complaint, huge time saver, consistent results every time no matter who is actually making it!
The time saved is invested in pulling out pantry staples and a measuring spoon. 5 minutes tops. Measuring cup doesn't count bc you're already using it.
Yea boxed cake has chemicals and emulsifiers that take cakes to another level that can be achieved with homemade recipe. Think you can share the chocó cake recipe? Thx
@@Amlo589 I know she made me want a slice of chocolate cake.
This was so delightful and informative! I'm definitely making all my boxed cakes like this now!
I’m so happy to hear that!!
I love the honesty along with the "key" hacks. I had to subscribe for more fun and of course the tips.
You clever lad!!! Have just stumbled across your channel. I have been baking cakes from boxes for 65 years and follow the procedure to the letter. Box cakes were more tasty decades ago, now even Betty Crocker tastes like foam. Of course I have no family now at home but I am definitely going to try your method. What I call thinking outside the box (pun intended lol). Can't wait to view your other offerings now. Thank you.
They tasted better because they were full of all sorts of fat and chemicals and things you could not pronounce, all the things to give them body, structure and taste, but also maybe cancer or at least a bigger waist line. I'm not so big on the political correctness in food ingredients. If you think about it and what all the ingredients are that we inhale and consume and are surrounded by, you would never get out of bed. I do also agree, I've eate plenty of things that had good mouth appeal, but no taste. Like eating a sponge.
@@kfl611respectfully, everything is a component of chemical formula names that you can’t pronounce because it’s not common. search up an apple’s chemical formula name… this is a pretty outdated and nonsensical way of approaching a discussion about food and health.
Johnny you are a treasure. So glad you've tagged up with the try guys so much because i otherwise would not have been blessed with your channel
I like his personality ❤
0:17 You threw some great shade right there. I could rest under it till June 😂
Lolol
I'm living for this! Great tips.
I love this because as a home based baker people love to ask “do you back from scratch” blah blah blah and I don’t I use a doctored recipe is what I call it ! I honestly like box mixed cakes better than scratch I’ve made scratch and no matter what recipe I use I just prefer box mix and so do my customers they LOVE my cakes ! And I also measure my sour cream with my heart omg all the time 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Great video!!! Thanks for the tips!! ❤❤❤
My favorite baker hands down. Just LOVE your chaotic energy! 🥰🥰🥰 This is why you mesh so well with the Try Guys lol.
I do the extra egg and milk instead of water, and i add yoghurt. Never used sour cream because i don't have it in my fridge usually.
I usually just like for ppl to tell me what I need to do and not talk much but surprisingly I didn’t mind with you. You’re so funny. Didn’t mind it one bit and thanks for the tips gonna try this nowwww
Absolutely loved watching this video 😂❤.
Here for a good time not long time 🎉 Thanks for sharing 😊
This looks so helpful! Can’t wait to watch 🎂
Lemme know what ya think!
@@thejonnycakes Great video! I will definitely use these tips for making box cakes!
Def going to try this I haven't tried making a box cake in almost ten years - they just weren't tasty enough - nope I didn't make them from scratch - I just bought them
Wow. Loved this. I grease pans but use cream of wheat to line them instead of flour. Cake comes right out.
This is a game changer!
thanks for the tips! love your content ❤
Thanks for being here
Thank YOU soooo much❣️This has go to be the best hack I’ve tried❣️ it was amazing…I appreciate it❣️❣️
How did this come out in perfect timing literally heard about making box cake fancy a few weeks ago and just bought a cake mix 3 days ago for a birthday this weekend 🤩 thank you
That makes my heart so happy
You are hilarious, and I love your tips ❤️
I bake once a year and this was a WINNER!! Thank you!!
Looks delicious! I'll try it!
This was such a useful video. Thanks Jonny!
Yay!
Thanks JohnnyCakes!
Try this yesterday and you save my life!
First time watching you and I luv it. Thank you
This was so enjoyable! I'm so glad I came across this video today! I've already been playing around with swapping oil for butter, and adding an extra egg, and I can definitely tell the difference. But I didn't know about the sour cream, so I can't wait to try it 😊
Love this guy😂🍰❤
I'm going to finally use this recipe and make cupcakes!
Thank you so much needed a last minute birthday cake saved the day!!! Loved u on Netflix too!!
I know I've only known you from without a recipe, phoning it in and the animation cake, but I love you Respectfully and platonically and hope you win everything
“Also, for legal purposes this is all a joke”😂😂😂😂 the absolute best
You give us so much ideas and tips,it's like ice-cream,keeps coming at ya ,anyways ,keep up the good work!!

Wow! I'm gonna try those tips! Ur hilarious!!
Your hilarious!! Thank you for the tips!!
yayyy! i'm excited to make this
Fave video yet!
Thank you Mommy
You can also replace the water with pureed strawberries which is so good
I came across your video looking for some recipe to enhance cake box mixes and omg you are the best I'm a fan had to subscribe love your energy ❤
I've been hoping for a cake basics video! 😄
Yay! So happy ur here.
Yes!!!
This video was funny and I feel like I learned a lot. Going to try this, this weekend when I make my son's birthday cake. :)
I've just got to try this. It never occurred to me to add sour cream. I've used pudding mix in the past, but this sounds so much better.
I love that you ignored the woman in the shop and bought the cake mix 🫣 This was a wonderful video, your sense if humour is fantastic 🤍
Heheheh it was FOR THIS VIDEO I THINK
This was great! Thank you 😂
Just watched the video first-time and I subscribed and really laughed and loved you. Thanks for the "HOMADEBOXEDCAKE '
Thank you for your tips you crack me up 🤣 thank you
Give this man a television show!
Love it, loved it, made it n ATE it❤ Thnx from India
Jonny, you SHOULD make more videos !
Ok I think I will
Totally taking these tips to my pineapple upside down cake today. It’s better than homemade, it’s store-bought!
Gosh darn it, I don’t have enough eggs! My grand son just stayed the weekend, he learned to cook eggs he made eggs for everyone everyday… bless his heart.
Going to teach him your hacks, he will love it!
TY😊
My grandma and I have always added mayonnaise which sounds crazy at first and then when you think about it it’s just eggs and oil and usually you have it laying around anyway
Just came across your video and I was like hey I know this guy!! It took me a minute, but then I remembered...you were on a baking challenge show! Didn't know you had a UA-cam channel. 😊 BTW love your tutorial...subscribed. Now to go watch more of your tutorials.
I remember a few years ago how Vaughn Vreeland (formerly of Tasty, now at NYT) made the box cake cooler. This video feels like a great companion piece to that.
I wanted to see it frosted since they were mini 6" cakes. Sounds like a great idea. Great tips because boxed cakes do kinda have that weird taste.
I think box cake mix tastes better than dam near any other cake I tasted. It's magical to me
Lizzie would add a package of vanilla pudding mix to yellow cake mix to make my favorite birthday cake
Yes I’ve heard this before! I will try it!
would you KEEP all the other tweaks? I have pudding and wanted to try, don't want to ruin the cake by adding something Not mentioned.@@thejonnycakes
I usually put sourcream in my cake mix from scratch and cornbread box mix only difference i will sub half the sourcream for the liquid amount. It gives them a soft texture with a slight tang
Great video, easy changes to make an even better cake! Thanks....new viewer here.
3:20 when I notice lumps or clumps in my cake I always mix it with a stick mixer. This also helps if I used too cold butter and I have butter flakes in the liquid. Just blend it thoroughly with the stick mixer for a few minutes and it will come together perfectly
15 sec into the video I knew I had to subscribe ❤😅 love you
"Now you could measure this out. You could use a scale. I [confused stuttering] Why? Like, why?" The exact moment I hit like. Baking is half science, half feelings based chaos and no one can convince me otherwise.
Love cooking
Thank you
He’s so funny and easy to learn from
I tried a muffin made at local bakery even when adjusting stuff I was able recognize yellow cake mix possiblity it was general Mills Co. If you use organic box mixes it's better all ingredients are real I made chocolate chip scones they came out great.
You are in is it cake !!!
You are iconic!
I just love you 🥰
0:18 why did that laugh fit so perfectly with the intro music 😂
I use blended fresh strawberries with this cake mix in addition to cream. Cream cheese frosting, yum! My first time seeing you. My husband asked me what I was laughing about from the other room;😂
Is there a frosting recipe coming up soon? I wanna do this for a birthday next month!
Ganache recipe soon!
I can't WAIT to try this! Hey @jonnycakes would this also work on a brownie mix???
I might have to do a whole brownie video. Replace the water for coffee and add an extra egg yolk.
This made my day😂Loving the jokes. Hate all seriousness all the time. New fan
I just bought a set of cake tools this week, now I can use the box cakes my family members bought on accident!
Have you ever tried the cake pan strips (that wrap around the outside of the pan for even baking? You can make them or buy them)? I need to try them. I usually just cut off the "dome" and eat it while I'm frosting the cake!
"Im here for a GOOD Time , NOT a long time!" Definitely best quote ever👏 (when it come to delicious, sometimes not always the best choice in foods or desserts 😆)
I no longer use Betty Crocker now that she cut the cord ingredients in her cake mixes all other brands still use 15.25 she cut hers down to 13oz but did. It lower the price. Great value makes a good cake mix for these hacks. Yay. Good video bin going to try this method!❤❤❤
@jonnycakes can you do a boxed brownie version?!
