Thank you. I loved this history lesson very much. I remember riding in the cabs of some of these around Albury and Wodonga Yards in the 70s and Early 80s. Now at the start of my 50s I still think those years of being around trains in Albury gave me my long life fascination with all trains. But there is just something about a Victorian Engine that no other state can match. It's in the engine sound of a Victorian Engine weather it be powered by Coal, Diesel or Electric. There is a sound & Railway Smells that's just uniquely Victorian. That other states don't have.
Sir Robert Peel (1788-1850) was the Founder of the first new Metropolitan Police Force at Scotland Yard in 1829. He was a Home Secretary & a Prime Minister.
Glad to see this video. At 1:50 we see the early speculation of what the historic locomotive that opened the first steam railway may have looked like. Was thought to be a 2-2-2 wheel arrangement. Later research published in "Steam Locomotives of the Victorian Railways. Volume 1, The first fifty years / Norman Cave, John Buckland, David Beardsell" shows a more likely 0-2-4 wheel arrangement and why this was likely. This is also hinted at by the S.T. Gill paintings of the time being of an 0-2-4. Later repaired (known as Dusty Bob) and used on tasks such as the construction of the Geelong to Ballarat line. Calls in newpapers of the early 1860s for this locomotive, being the Australian equivalent of the Rocket in significance, to be preserved came to nothing. A tragedy that Charles Nettleton dropped the glass plate negative of the photograph he took of the historic opening while developing it. Even less is known of an even earlier first locomotive, this being the pile driver conversion used to construct the line quicker than anticipated and thus generating the need for a locally built engine to operate the line until the English order of locomotives were delivered.
I still have my copy of "Power Parade" 1954 complete with the 1958 update which had the T class and the S class diesel added. I cannot remember the era before the B class were introduced but they were reserved for main lines so most lines didn't see them for years.
At 16:15 the video shows the first 4-6-0 S class when describing a 4-6-0 W class, then when describing an S class show a W class. This was the same mistake perpetuated as made in the first Power Parade booklet of 1954. Perhaps a few more mistakes in this to keep us on our toes. This video being largely based on the 1954 book but updated and with video coverage added.
Great video but hard to understand why there was no coverage of suburban electric trains and rail motors eg Dog Box Swing Door, Tait, Harris, Silvers (Hitachi) nor steam Rowan Cars, short lived Kerr-Stuart. Internal combustion Mc Keen, AEC, Leyland, PERM/DERM, the 3 Walker types and DRC. This despite the vast bulk of passenger travel being on these types of rail vehicles. Would be interesting to know why the decision was made to exclude them as though they did not exist. Perhaps to keep it under an hour.
Great resource but A2 at 29:50. More correct to say that from 1915 all newly built A2s were constructed with Walscheart valve gear and cylinders to a modified design. No fitting of this gear was made to existing Stephenson valve gear A2s as I understand it. Commentary may have implied a conversion.
Great to see this video but a shame more movie coverage of the iconic H class 4-8-4 did not come to light for inclusion in the video. Surely more exists than the cab side snippet at 38:33. Would love someone to inform us of where we could see some H class moving footage or hopefully post it on UA-cam.

I’m surprised that their was enough time to build the Locomotives for Britain let alone be exporting them around the World - there Must Have been 48 hours in every day during late 1800’s. Where did all the Skilled Engineers come from, and why were they Repeatedly Rebuilding and Remodelling locomotives?..

I suppose it was because they were multiple units instead of full-fledged locomotives. Still would've been nice to see though, I agree
