I watched a movie about Darling Harbour shunters, they said they were under pressure to cut corners to be ever more “efficient” and as soon as something goes wrong get the book thrown at them.

I did this job in the 1980s and I'm grateful to the guys who trained me it was a dangerous job had a few close calls myself some of the men I worked with were veitnam veterans I will never forget how protective and kind they were to me as a somewhat green late teen

I know I'm old now, but I will swear this is the same film they showed us in training as a guard in 1980

i did guards training in 1983, we saw a film as well but not this one i think..this is too old, the screw couplings and most of the buffers were gone from the trucks by then, that is not to say you did not see it! i remember our instructor Euwan Charles ,former Welsh Guardsman , he lost both his legs shunting in South Dynon yard.

And not a high vis vest in sight! But in all seriousness, I’m assuming when shunters had a bad day at the office, it was really bad. Were buffers banned for safety reasons?

buffers were removed from carriages after being auto coupled because the auto couplers were self buffing unlike the screw couplings that only pulled and required the buffers to stop the carriages smashing into each other while slowing down, going down hill etc

I just happened to see this film today and was astonished to see a person who I believe is my Dad in one scene. Could anyone tell me in which year this film was shot? It would help me determine if the person is indeed my Dad. He was a shunter for a while before becoming a driver.

At 6:21 I can just make out a 1948 servicing date on the wagon. This is consistent with my opinion of late 1940s film. Lack of diesels too and ref to steel shortages which were postwar. Training film for all the new workers needed post war.
The C class steam loco at 18:54 has a square oil bunker on the tender so after the start of the 1946 to 1949 conversion to oil firing. No oily Cs prior to 46.
