Frederick Delius - 1862-1934 - An English composer. Born in the north of England to a prosperous mercantile family, he resisted attempts to recruit him to commerce. He was sent to Florida in the United States in 1884 to manage an orange plantation. There he soon neglected his managerial duties, and in 1886 returned to Europe. Having been influenced by African-American music during his short stay in Florida, he began composing. After a brief period of formal musical study in Germany beginning in 1886, he embarked on a full-time career as a composer in Paris and then in nearby Grez-sur-Loing, where he and his wife Jelka lived for the rest of their lives, except during the First World War.

Thank you
Wunderbare ❤Einstimmung auf unsere Reise in 2 Wochen nach Florida , love it 😍
Thank you.
Have a great time in lovely Florida.
I´ve been listening to Delius since the 90´s, when I first heard one of his aquarelles and On hearing the first cuckoo in spring in the radio, here in Colombia. I even bought a CD I still have.
I´m from Colombia, South America and I love Delius music since my youth
Thank you, glad you've found this Delius channel, keep in touch.
The Yearling brought me here.
Florida and arrangements of Delius' music, very apt. Thank you.
The joy, hope, and quiet energy in so many places, the serenity in others, and the sense of longing and loss in others really "sing" to the human condition. Delius has seen me through so much and is, in this moment, sustaining me through something very painful and fearful. But I've turned so many times to "Song of the High Hills" and "Songs of Farewell" and a number of Delius' short works. Why do I forget about Appalachia? The images provided here really visually elevate this piece. It was the beautiful thumbnail of the sun over the St Johns that brought me to this video. Thank you so much to the creator of this channel
Thank you so much for posting this thoughtful comment. Music such as this can change lives for the better and is the best tonic (for those who can listen) in times of distress. I hope music such as this will continue to sustain you over whatever trials, and that the wonderful renewal of Nature will triumph over all ill and be a source of inspiration and comfort to us all. After all, we are all part of 'Nature' and Delius was the very 'Apostle of Nature' represented in music. Please continue to enjoy the contents of this channel it is my pleasure to bring this to you through UA-cam. x
JAYNE THE TIME TRAVELER, YOU HAVE LINKED YOURSELF FOREVER WITH THE GREAT MAESTRO, AS IF YOU WERE THERE WHEN THIS WAS CREATED, JUST AS IF YOU COLLABORATED WITH HIM IN HIS OWN DAY, YOU HAVE DONE MORE TO BRING THIS GLORIOUS MUSIC TO THE WORLD THAN THE GREAT COMPOSER HIMSELF, AND FOR THAT I AM ETERNALLY GRATEFUL, YOUR PERFECT PICTURES AND VISUALS AND ARTISTRY ARE FOREVER LINKED WITH THIS EVERLASTING MUSIC !!! I THINK OF YOU VEEEEEEEEEEEEERY FONDLY AS I PLAY THIS MUSIC 2 OR 3 TIMES A DAY FOR OVER 3.5 YEARS NOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (I HAD TO CUT BACK FROM 10 TIMES A DAY, I WAS GETTING TOO OBSESSED - HA)
Thank you so very much for your wonderful support. I don't think there has been a better and more devoted follower of these videos. To have your encouragement is a great boost to my efforts. You clearly have great sensitivity to relate to the music of Delius in such a way. You are indeed a sweet sensitive soul and it is a great and rewarding privilege that you so generously sing such lovely praises. You are such sweet music to my ear. Much Love from the UK xxx
4:08 Wow
I hadnt heard much of his music until UA-cam. Great music!
So glad to bring this to you through UA-cam.
There is NOTHING like Walk to the Paradise Garden. Delius was lovely!
For me Frederic Delius is one of the best composers! I love his works really, but sometimes it makes me sad, because it is so touching.
That is not an unusual reaction and sometimes it can seem just too much beauty and sadness to endure. Thank you.
Thank you for sharing this. It is much appreciated
This is so wonderful......thank you so much...greetings from germany
9:05 to 9:32 hits every time 🔥
Frederick Delius was so under-appreciated. His "Walk to the Paradise Garden" is simply stunning.
Absolutely marvellous documentary about a true 'force of nature'. Because of the darker elements of his character, I don't think a film about Grainger could be made in today's climate. You can certainly see it was made in the eighties by the fine mullet the Rattler was sporting.
Sublime
I first heard this while driving north on I-95 heading north from North Florida during a thunder storm. It was a almost areligious experience.
Love your comment sharing such an awesome experience. Thank you.
Amazing film of a great English composer.
I watched this on television at some point.Don't know if when first made or a re-run.
Thank you for the upload, I've loved the North Country Scetches, the Florida Suite etc. for decades. One of the popular streaming platforms (spot i fy) was my source to further explore Delius' works during the last years. I too very much appreciate your photos, they compliment the music so well. Greatings from a German villager to all of you aficionados!
Delius continues to be discovered.
Rapturous......BRAVO from Acapulco!
Gorgeous pieces. A great lover of Delius' music, I had never heard of these. Thank you. (from Arkansas, USA)
Me neither.....from Acapulco!
Thank you. Beautifully rendered songs.

Hello, I'd thought youd enjoy hearing my experience with delius. I've been aware of him for some time, trying a couple miscellanous pieces but not impressed. But last month i tried the mass of life, and song of the high hills with beecham and was hooked! I enjoy his sense of melody.
Thank you, so glad that you also found this channel.
Unlistenable - so many ads, every 4 minutes appx. Give it a miss guys.
Sorry, can't do anything about the ads. UA-cam is becoming less entertaining and more exasperating SADLY!
For me, Delius has produced the most 'lovely' music. No other composer can be summed up in one word.
I’ve loved Delius’ “Florida Suite” for many years…now I’ll add “Appalachia” to many other of my favorites he wrote…wonderful post, thank you! 😊
Thank you so much for this comment please continue to enjoy this channel, it is my pleasure to bring it to you through the wonders of UA-cam. x
A wonderful film. I did think it a bit odd the way Frederick's wife kept referring to him by his last name though.
I discovered Delius more then 40 years ago via a radio program in my country with the title "Portrait of an unknown composer". I immediately loved his music and still do. This performance with Sir Charles Mackerras is outstanding and the sound quality is magnificent. Thank you !
Similar for me. Heard Delius' music on a "classical" radio station several decades ago. They played the North Country Scetches and I was drawn in immediately. Different, but also very scenic is Ma Mère l'Oye by Ravel. You all probably know it, but I thought I'd mention it, just in case...
Our hearts sing.
Really love this.Peace and calm in this turbulent world.
Yes, the work is a masterpiece. I hope you don't mind, but there is something in the description to the video that needs to be corrected. It is stated that the poet and novelist Ernest Dowson is American. Ernest Dowson was, in fact, English. (Maybe you were thinking of Walt Whitman?)
Thank you for providing this. I thought my heart was dead. Now, after hearing this, it seems not so dead as I had thought it to be. Thank you, again.
The best therapy ever for those who can simply listen.
These used to be old radio past times!!!
We can learn much from the past and gain much from what we have had.
Back to America's original traditional meditational quiet time music that's good for the heart!!
So during the music wars of the late1960s and early70s the classic music haters thought they could replace their music for ours? It didn't work thank God melodious meditational classics survive today!!!
music haters? first I've heard of this. I think music is just created by a people who are experiencing a certain period in either THEIR lives or CULTURE'S life. And it is reflective of that bit of reality. So 'modern' music (including the 60s and 70s) simply shows how agitated, lost, confused, rebirthing, dying, etc we were.
Today there is funk and blam blam blam! What does a person get out of that?
What a wonderful age we are now in! A variety of choice of songs and music for the occasion!!
Anyone who has studied history knows electric music couldn't exist because in Delius time there wasn't electricity for modern rock or hard music to exist besides hard music doesn't have the melody that soft classical has to blend in with nature for quiet meditation!
Yes, and Delius was the Master of coaxing all in Mother Nature out of lush those orchestral tones.
Anyone who has studied history knows electric music couldn't exist because in Delius time there wasn't electricity for modern rock or hard music to exist besides hard music doesn't have the melody that soft classical has to blend in with nature for quiet meditation!
Are there any manchineel trees around those parts of Florida?
I think they were native to Florida, perhaps someone can provide a better answer.

Sorry about that, sadly I have no control over this unfortunate distraction.
There is an ad blocker for youtube that I use. It saves my sanity! I recommend!! I am using Firefox browser but I am sure all browsers have it as an option. Mine is free!!
