As a red Sox fan who grew up watching this guy play nothing but respect for Mo. If anyone deserves to be in the Hall of Fame it Rivera. He is the greatest closer ever.
Watching him leave the mound absolutely broke my heart. He and our boys helped heal the city in such a big way and I was never as big a sports fan as I was supporting NY teams after the attacks. We healed together, and that’s what matters, though it would’ve been even a little sweeter to see the Yanks take the title that year
Not particularly a huge baseball fan by far..... but as a huge fan of sports and its benchmarks, there are few and far between who could match the subtle intensity and sheer level of skill-driven natural clutchness this man had brought to a single sport. He changed the whole thing. An incredible figure in sports history, and there couldn't have been a better candidate to become the first unanimous inductee into a hall of fame.
He was the best athlete of any sport on those Yankees teams. He's an absolute legend and one of my fondest memories was watching that 04 Red Sox teams finally conquer him. Im an M's fan and watched the entire ALCS like a hawk.
Best athlete of any sport 👀 I'm trying to figure out a pitching closer, how many frames they typically pitch per game? Also did Rivera pitch any full games? Maybe start of career?

What an experience it was. Talking about actual pitches- some of the greatest inside work I've ever seen, so sharp, crisp, so cut. Not just the outside-in, where the pitch travels from outside to inside etc, but those times where the pitch, from release, holds a razor's edge inside pitch trajectory, like it travels through the eye of a needle the whole way to the plate. And the ball effect, such a clean, compressed ball, deceptively dense and heavy; it just neutralised energy transfer. Even good wood on the ball did not translate well.
@@kev1277 Not to mention it got overblown later on. The guy gave up the same amount of runs as he had in 2003 series, just one. People forget that the rest of the series wasn't his fault (though there are those who wanted to pin game 5 on him because they didn't paid attention to the game).
I blame Game 5 on (1) A-Rod's failure to drive in a key run in the 8th inning which would have made it 5-2 and (2) Tom Gordon, who turned into Ed Whitson in the postseason.
Rivera was agreat pitcher and deserves to be in the hof, but he cut down red sox hitters too many times when i was present at fenway park for me to like him.
The best NY sports athlete ever. Domination from the 1st pitch to the last!. (i dont count the lost vs Arizona, that was just poor defensive managing). Joe needed to bring the outfield in and the bloop single wouldve ended the game with the Yankess winning their 28 WS.
