    I’ve coached over 10,000 music producers over the past 8.5 years. Some have gone on to accrue millions of streams, tour the world and forge careers for themselves - whereas others have given up before finishing even one track.
    So what’s the difference between each end of the scale? Talent? Luck? Resources?
    Well, there are definite patterns I’ve noticed, so in this video I unpack the 3 lessons I’ve learned from coaching all these people over the years.

      I would love some help learning I tried school but for full sail university it was to quick for my mind to actually pick up anything besides that I failed do to I couldn't get past grammar. ive been making music by ear practically solo since I was 17 and I just want to get to my dream. originally I wanted to get so good to be at trance energy but im slowly thinking that is a unreachable dream since im 37 now. @EDMTips

      I’d like for you to make some vids using other DAWs. Not everyone uses Ableton…it would be good for the channel if you’d diversify the videos in that regard because there’s nobody doing content like yours for Logic, for example.

    This is so incredibly insightful. I spent decades believing I couldn't succeed at music and this led to deep depression. Much of this stemmed (pun intended) from my parents not supporting my passion for music. After some great counseling and life reorganization, I am back at music with fresh ears and without the expectations I'd been crushing myself with. I've been taking courses on mixing and using my past as a springboard to new directions. At 52, I still feel like a total novice at this stuff, but I'm having a blast and your channel gives me so much inspiration to get better. Thank you!

    Will, as always I'd like to thank you for this video.
    Some time ago, I've stopped noodling around being as original as possible. But this did not lead anywhere. Once I've started listening to your constant saying that being original is not the key.
    I've had so much fun following along your videos about making music in the style of... And I could learn that music like Nora En Pure and people like that is my style. Together with my personal taste with music by OMD, The Cure and Depeche Mode, I've found my personal musical language. I won't say that I'm as good as possible. But I would say that I've improved my musical technique.
    Now, I'd like to wish you all the best for the new year. May the force be with you. Let's see what comes next in the style of.

The one thing holding me back as I am doing the course is, as always, me for all the reaons you describe in this video. Great video, thank you! My goal is to submit to labels this year and get one or two tracks released on a label, so I have a request: Would you be willing to do a video covering labels research and submissions? Questions like which websites / platforms would you use to research labels and figure out which labels are right for your music? And what would you research to understand which labels are right for you? It seems like your general advice is to tailor music to specific labels, but a chicken and egg problem is - how do I know which labels are right for me? Or even more to the point: which ones would even take submissions from a new producer? The submission forms on their websites would rarely say if they only do established musicians, so you might end up producing a few tracks for a specific label, and that label is not really interested in beginners like you!

    I "wrote" my first song. I'm so noobish I don't even know if one could call it that, but it's the closest I've been to... the thing, so far.
    Spent some renewed time finding an entrance into theory that would stick for me, and I did. So I came up with a very simple progression from A minor and filled it in melodically to help guide the lyrics I was writing.
    Took me long enough to finally get to this phase, noobish or not, but wow... This is fun. Can't believe it took me so long to just take the somewhat normal approach. Hoping this will give a more natural flow to my learning process. Still much to learn, but now at least I know where I want to go.
    Here's hoping the sky won't fall on our heads in 2024!

    Tips for trance production and how to layer purposely instead of just in a messy way?

    • @EDMTips
      @EDMTips  5 місяців тому +5

      Great suggestion, I will add this to my list :)

    • @tuseemusic6269
      @tuseemusic6269 5 місяців тому +3

      I learned this for dubstep but try it in trance !
      For your drop leads focus on layering from a frequency spectrum perspective. Make a low end / mid range and high end lead.
      Use eq to carve away frequencies and make sure to not over power the highs use a glue compressor to consolidate the sounds and add effects to taste !
      Also eq and sound selection are super important. Focus on less instead of more when it comes to layering.
      Try 3 leads at once in the different frequencies

    • @tuseemusic6269
      @tuseemusic6269 5 місяців тому +3

      If you do decide to add more layers make it dynamic, like every 8 bars add or take away a sound instead of 6 leads playing at once

    • @CPTLYNXY
      @CPTLYNXY 5 місяців тому +3

      Make sure each layer is not playing the full melody. On the low end lead mute all high notes for your main lead sound cut just low notes and for your high lead sound cut low and middle range notes. Then sandwich together with level mixing and compression.

    Every year I got one certain focus on one specific genre, but tbh I never managed to finished to finish one song in even one of those genres. Yes. I try to step up my production in looking at those past "disasters" what it lacks. I always think: being myself is reference enough. Actually I realize: Cool, taking reference is fine, without losing trait in a song.
    I still got confidence and tbh sometimes I sit in my sessions and lose my target.

    I’ve been producing for about 5 years. Sticking with one genre has probably been my biggest issue.. Granted, I’ve made some stuff in different genres that I really like, but I definitely don’t have my own sound.
    My approach is currently create a synth loop at whatever tempo and then make whatever genre that loop sounds like.
    I rarely listen to a genre for an extended period of time, I feel like I have musical ADD.
    I’m going to try one genre for 6 months.
    How did people chose their genre? Was it obvious or did you just choose one that you kind of like?
    Duskus, Fred Again, Ross From Friends are probably my favourite electronic artists so “fuck it” I’m going with that vibe.

    Hi Will, since I stopped working for artists and since I moved from Frankfurt a.M. to Berlin last year, I have the chance to work on my own music I would love bring to the market.
    My personal topics in music creation are:
    1. room acoustics/room treatment
    2. metering tools at different stages of production including measurements of your room acoustics and workspace
    3. How to get better results with my own voice/singing/vocalproduction and FX
    4. FX Design/creating huge chains and streamline the process of gain staging during production (my personal way I work) - don't want to waste too much time and fresh ears with amplitude when mixing so I fix this while producing
    5. Even I love synthesizers since 30 years (startet with 14) I am still interested in synthesis (add./subs./FM) - especially how to create simple and basic sounds
    6. A/B testing plugIns and setups (which plugs are the best for me) I am working with quite old plugs because I know them best, but since Black Friday I noticed some new plugs sounding much better than my usual tools ;-)
    6. ways to connect to music labels - how to "sell" music on the market (Apple Music/Spotify etc)
    My personal struggle with own productions:
    1. to decide what is really good and what is bullshit
    2. to keep things simple
    3. create tension
    4. THE BIGGEST THING for me: (as a former mastering guy I know how to get loud, dirty and crazy, but how can I achieve a full, warm and softer sound? (transients, room, phase, order of fx and so on that keeps the sound precise but not sounding aggressive, no harshness >>>maybe like this:
    open.spotify.com/intl-de/track/3KGbOtIDJBEoA8yKzemR6V?si=eb0604681c614f6d
    and of course the all time topic gear and plugs. Hope you can work with anything of that, my UA-cam friend ;-)
    Happy new year for you!

    I've been working on this for two years and I kind of have a love/hate relationship with what I write. I like my ideas but they are always missing the epic feel. On the bright side, I am at the point where I finish my songs, but they take forever to write (usually 4 months) and I'm always disappointed with the results when considering how much time and effort I put into it. I feel like a experienced musician could probably write my song within a few days and if it only took me a few days, I'd like it better. I'm still totally lost on the technical side of things, mixing and mastering. I also need to learn more about arrangements/transitions, melodies. Basically I needed help on everything. So, I actually started a school in LA. Will start next week actually. Oh and I guess I am committing one of the errors by not using reference tracks so I will start doing this going forward

    I’m into multiple genres, and have played most of them live for decades (some, like house and techno, I haven’t). I try to imagine focusing on one genre for songwriting and I can’t. Ideas in different genres come into my head every week, and skipping around keeps me from getting stale. I also realize, at the very least from a marketing perspective, there are downsides to having releases in multiple genres.
    Am I doomed? Or are there ways to mitigate the risks of recording/ uploading in multiple genres? (For gigging, I’ve found it to be a plus.) Should I have completely separate brands, for example?

    In terms of recreation of sounds using reference tracks from my personal Sensei, I realize that it is not that easy. I've been trying to recreate my Sensei's pluck sound for three months and I'm failing. As a result, I've been stuck in a dead end with my track for three months. This is frustrating if you've already tried Serum, Sylenth1, Diva, Omnisphere. It doesn't sound anything like my Sensei's pluck sound and it doesn't sound good either.
    I've only been producing for about 10 months. During that time I produced 6 tracks. But since I've been trying to recreate sounds from my two senseis, I can't finish a track anymore.

      @EDMTips Hello Will, I've been watching your very engaging and informative videos for a few weeks now and I have to say I'm completely hooked, not only in the manner that you deliver your golden nuggets of wisdom but also the enthusiasm embedded in these short lessons. I'm not a spring chicken to begin with, and I began my dj career decades ago in London playing followed by a move to ibiza back in the late nineties where I lived for a number of years. My story is long and fruity. However, my career path was thrown off its trajectory not from producing music but by producing children, a story I share with many older djs. In short, I am proud to say that before I left to nurture my offspring, I was the happy owner of three releases on vinyl, two bootleg and one on a tiny label all made on a bootleg copy of Cubase and a windows XP laptop. I had no instruction from any professional and literally taught myself...badly, nevertheless I left my mark as they say and was and still am proud to show my kids what I achieved.
      I am keen to join your accelerator class however I do not have anything on line, I did purchase Ableton live suit (thank you for the advice) together with an apple mac pro, a keyboard and headphones are being delivered shortly with the purposes of scratching that itch that I've had for years and ignored until now, thanks to you! I am going to spend a few weeks working my way around Ableton which at the moment looks like 汉语 and hopefully by then I can upload something for you to listen to. I just wanted to say thank you for the encouragement 🙏

    Will why is the course so expensive 2,5k , that's a crazy price

    • @EDMTips
      @EDMTips  5 місяців тому +2

      Well, I’ll go through a few points (in no particular order)…
      1. How do you know it’s a “crazy” price if you haven’t taken it? I suppose it depends on how you value your time, but many people would gladly pay to avoid 3 or 4 years of self-learning. Those are the people we serve in the Accelerator.
      2. It’s not an “online video course”, per se - As well as a video curriculum, it includes 12-month’s worth of coaching, twice weekly group calls, samples and presets, etc. weekly homework, feedback on homework, 1-on-1 coaching, in-person meet-ups, career and marketing guidance.
      3. The nearest comparable program in a university will cost five times the price, and of our students who have taken university courses beforehand, they have improved more in a few weeks as part of our Accelerator than in three years at university.
      4. It’s also $3,000, not $2,500, and in 2024 the price will be increasing.
      Hope this helps! Any more questions, just let me know :)
