- DXFan619 finally reviews Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde for the NES, and somehow lives to tell the tale. This is undoubtedly one of the worst games I've ever played and truly deserves a spot on my Top 20 Worst Games Ever list.
Damn, you went WAY more in depth here than James Rolfe did. Not to discredit the Fucking Nerd, but you took way more context from the book as well as covering both versions of the game. Nice work.

Also he'd now know that the Japanese version is worse than the American version and that the makers of the game disrespect Dr. Jekyll's homosexuality by forcing him to unintentionally marry a female.

Why would Jekyll marry a woman If he was gay? Well, the answer is actually pretty simple: Jekyll is a closet gay, and in an era such as the Victorian one people was repressed and grew to behave following a certain etiquette and stereotype. Otherwise society and their masks would ruin your Life. Marriage was often a matter of interest and money, not love, and often worked as a good facade. That is pretty much it!
Marriages in the Victorian era were usually arranged. Didn't matter whom you married because you could have affairs, at least if you were discreet about it.

I think the real question is not who the Bomb Maniac is, but why on Earth is he allowed to roam freely about the streets in the town and drop bombs all over the place. Dude should be locked up. Just like the people who designed this game.

Great review! Feels very fresh. My two cents: the award for WORST SOUND DESIGN on NES has to go to Rocky and Bullwinkle's god awful music as shown on the AVGN episode. Does anyone know of something WORSE?

The coins can also come from Rosette Ranright in the Japanese version, waving to you from a window above a door. It _IS_ RNG as to whether or not she helps you - all stress gone, full coins - or takes your money and kicks you out, which may anger you enough to become Hyde. How unfortunate we never even got a chance to interact with her in the US version.
If you don't have eight coins - it IS that many, been confirmed - and you want to avoid damage to your LIFE from trying to scroll Elena off the screen, then that's when you use your cane to poke her. The benefit of this is that when you return to being the doctor, Elena is gone. A risk to take, but if it's saving LIFE and moving along for the good ending, then it is what it is.

That is only one of the theorized themes. *Theorized*. ie it's the modern era and everything is looked at through the lens of "The Big Gay".
Hyde came about as a way for Jekyll to deal with his hypocrisy. It is implied that he lived a life not a pure or as virtuous as he might have liked. What Stevenson means by that is anyone's guess but I highly doubt it was homosexual in nature.
People perceive the relationships in the work as homosexual because the lack of women. Stevenson's previous novels had action and intrigue. (Kidnapped, Treasure Island). "Tales for Boys" they were marketed as during the Victorian period. Stevenson wrote what he knew; male characters. (Though some dabbled with having female protagonists. Thomas Hardy and Tess of D'Urbvilles and Madame Bovary by Flaubert, which were arguably morality tales of the "fallen woman")
Jekyll and Hyde is one of my favorites of gothic literature. Your interpretation of the work is just one of many and I'm fine with that. But to see half the comments taking it as the end all be all of the work is just sad and an oversimplification of a great book.
It was the 1800's. I don't think R.L. Stevenson was going for woke points.

I've heard that you can also use the cane to defuse bombs, which makes about as much sense as killing bees with your cane. First of all, how would you know to defuse a bomb? And second, how can a cane defuse a bomb? None of this makes sense.
How Nintendo accepted this game with their seal of approval, I'll never know.
Update: It turns out that using the cane to defuse bombs was not possible. I've played the game to notice this.

Also, to get the best ending
You need to beat the last level as Hyde, fight a boss, and then beat the level as Jekyll. The game literally breaks its own rules for the best ending.

Ok this game can be boiled down to: 1.Bullshit licensing, Dr.Jakyll and Mr. Hyde only works in a point and click - detective/mystery setting, anything else is doomed to failure from the start.
2.Bullshit Design (Sound, Levels, Graphics,)
3.Bullshit Controls and unsatisfying Gameplay.
It was 1988 after all, stuff like that happened frequently I bet.

A game about Dr Jykel and mr. Hyde could have been a fun game. Why not have the rolls switched. Have doctor Jykel in the demon world, And have mr hyde in the real world. It would make a lot more sense.

This was Luna's off the record mission unfortunately the Philosophers managed to outmaneuver her in obtaining Hyde's genetics but it was a great victory against the Dark Kingdom as they wouldn't be able to replicate Hyde's Psychowave into their Youma.
I remember Alphaomegasin and angry video game nerd play this game and boy was it funny

Notice that Luna (in this game) is an alley cat. And in the sailor moon anime (which I love BTW) she doesn't like alley cats. Again, another thing that makes no sense

You know the people who try to stop jekyll are cursed? see the good ending for proof.
Maybe the Hyde session wouldn't be that much god awful, if instead of walking backwards, trying to regenerate the stress meter without reaching the place Jekyll died, the character could simply rise as Hyde on the place Jekyll fell, and move to the right, continuing the progress of Jekyll, like an alternate gameplay of Jekyll, and return to Jekyll gameplay when the Stress Meter fills.
I just don't have ideas of how one would regenerate the health though, pickups maybe?
Beside, since the game is about "Good VS Evil", wonder what would happen if Hyde reached the Church to visit Ms. Millicent? #BadEnding or some kind of Final Boss fight for a hidden good ending? Since the player is at a devil version of the world, wonder what could be at the church?

There is two endings, the good you get to the church with Jekyll, tha bad you finish the final boss as Hyde.
Actually, the Hyde finish is the Good Ending. The Jekyll finish is the bad one.

I had a nightmare many years ago and while the minutia has faded the overall details have not. Let's just say every telling of it I have done in real life has been well received around a few campfires/chimneys over the intervening years. Basically for reasons that were never alluded to in the nightmare a shadowman became attached to me and a group of friends who were having a picnic come party next to where I worked. All I can say is that at the time and in the nightmare I was working for an antique restoration firm so there were plenty of old doohickies that could have held something nefarious in them, maybe I had worked on something that had not wanted to be worked on.
Either way things went crazy paranormal after I nipped into work to check on something and a journey was began across Britain where we traveled at night and slept during the day and every now and then the shadowman would claim one of my entourage until we arrived at a lake and things went somewhat Heaven and Hell and the shadowman was contained within the lake during a full moon and there was a localised tsunami as the climax after the shadowman failed to eat the moon even as I was doing a jig with a very old walking stick bathed in ethereal light...
I did not go into any of the really freaky shit, like the shadowman possessing one of the group and then raping another of the group until the group smashed the rapists head in accidentally while trying to knock him out or the bit where someone's soul was poured out and drank by the shadowman but hey. You get the picture if you bothered to read this rather late comment. One's dreams and indeed nightmares can be fonts of creativity as I am sure Mr Stevenson would agree. 'Fine old bogey tale'. I'll remember that quote.
