The ending is a tribute to a story called "The Gift of the Magi." A broke couple are trying to get Christmas gifts for each other. The wife cuts her hair and sells it, which Frank references, to buy a chain for her husband's pocket watch. The husband sells his pocket watch to buy her some hair clips, which she can't use.

My brother actually got Spy Hunter and his NES at the same time.
I don't know if it was a packaged deal or whatever. I know Nintendo bundled it with 2 controllers, Super Mario Bros and a Zapper gun.

Guerilla War is the best game of this type. Go play that game instead of Commando or Ikari Warriors.

Ahaha, I remember the rumors about being able to use the girl and ride the motorcycle in Spy Hunter. Also, I don't think we ever got past stage 3 in Ikari Warriors because of various glitches (like the aforementioned getting stuck in the environment). XD
I had Spy Hunter and Ikari Warriors as a kid too, and I loved them even though every gripe you have with them is true. I remember ABBA stopped working for my brother and I in stage 3, truly one of the most memorable gaming letdowns of my life

I'm glad you addressed spy Hunter's never ending-ness. I played it for hours on end as a kid on the apple 2 GS. It never ends. End of story.
The first Ikari Warriors game ever played was Ikari Warriors 3, and at the time, I thought it was the coolest game ever... despite the fact that you start off with NO WEAPON! WTF SNK??? It took me lots of quarters to realize that I would never beat that first stage.
God I love Frank. He's just some guy with eclectic taste in shit and cracks me up every time. God love ya, Frank.

guerilla war is my favorite run and gun game aside from the fact you play as fidel castro and chev guevara leading the revolution against cuba its a great shooter
The PS2 remake of Spy Hunter was pretty crazy awesome.
You can actually get the llama fucking end to Spyhunter by first buying a llama.

Great episode Pat! You coming back up to portland anytime this summer? I have an old M82 unit that my mom got when sears closed down in Bend years ago. I wouldn't feel right selling it as i never really played on it, i just kept it as an oddity i a box. If you could promise me you'd never sell it i'd totally donate it to you. My first NES game was 9999-in-1 :(
I was like 6 or 7 when i got my Genesis. I had no idea what is was. I was more excited about the power rangers all 5 (that was the first xmas w/ them). To find out my mom bought two sets of 5 and kept 5 as collectibles. still got them upstairs, they look brand new. I have no idea how she got them. All my friends that year got the pink and yellow rangers. I guess that was all they had.

Midnight resistance a Contra look-a-like game also had that rotary joystick but that game came out several years later.

I'd really like to play this on the arcade because it WAS kinda fun to play, but the controls were just bleeeh. Hell, the controls would have been almost bearable if it wasn't SOOOO fucking slow.
also, Ikari Warriors is the definition of the term "Spray and Pray".
If I do not count Duck Hunt and Gyromite which came with my NES, Elevator Action and 1942 are the first games I bought for my NES.
Avgn review that ikari warrior too and Spy Hunter waa my favorite action games Bally Midway.
most of my childhood I was damaged by the shitty games... I had ikari warriors 2... I beat it with no ABBA code... I learned how evil a game can be.... no not evil like ghosts and goblins that is like shell shock in war.. no evil like they did such a bad job that they were like it is so bad who will keep trying and see how shit it is no need for an ending. ... Ending SUCKS

Christmas in July is the time of the year, time to play Christmas music, no, I have two games "Ikari Warriors" and "Spy Hunter". In the first half "Spy Hunter" has no ending, but it is endless, just like they did with "Pac-Man", "Galaga", "Space Invaders" and a few others, no ending at all. "Ikari Warriors" does indeed have an ending.
Much like Pat, I had Ikari Warriors and I loved the arcade version but did admit that the NES one was broken, but since it had the continue code, I really didn't care. Plus my friend Mike and I could play this game at the same time! which was mind blowing for the NES since so many other games had turned into alternating play games.
"Ikari Warriors" is a hard and tedious game when you continue, just hit "ABBA", the code which was used by a 70's Swedish group that did "Dancing Queen", "Mamma Mia", "Fernando", "Lay All Your Love On Me", "Gimmie, Gimmie, Gimme" and others. The game was made by the fans of ABBA.

Funny Story: New Year's Eve 1989 I started playing it, I got farthest ever, at Midnight, 1990 came in! And my Mom, told me to turn it off, we were gonna have a Family Prayer! I said, HOLD ON, let me finish this game! I was really excited, I have passed the boat area, I thought I was gonna master this game! Well, mom came in room, pressed Power off! I was SO FREAK'N PISSED! The 1990s didnt start well! lol

I spent so many hours playing Spy Hunter on my NES as a kid.
I remember a weird glitch where you could drive on the outskirts of the road without dying, and rack up a ton of points.
I have played the ps2 version of spy hunter it is a lot better.
Right on man, I had many a Hasbro Christmas, I have those figures MOC and a MISB H.I.S.S. Tank. I still pretty much have all my ARAH stuff from those days.
