    Vanguards are one of the most accurate, smooth action guns under $700. Beautiful guns too!

      Yup, especially when you got some rifles, in price categories they don't belong in. I tell people, if they are shopping for Ruger Americans(not that they are bad), that if the price is similar to the Vanguard or Howa, then get those instead. In normal times, really the Ruger A should be under $400. Used to see them $280 range here and there. Who knows what normal will be in future though. They way high now.

    • @simonar11
      @simonar11 3 роки тому +2

      @@Hill_Billy_Without_A_Hill agreed. I bought my son a Ruger American. 243 compact and its a tac driver. Serves its purpose as its light and we don't have to worry about scratches and wear as much as an expensive gun.. However, the stock, trigger is decent, finishes on the bolt, barrel etc.. and action smoothness is where I see the difference quality/price. Both will get the job done. One is just a better quality rifle and will be reflected in price as you noted.

      Bergaras are more accurate yet at that price point. Weatherby tends to use thinner barrel profiles, which heat up fast and start throwing shots. But they’re good for hunting and saving a little weight.

    The Vanguard is a mix between the Weatherby Mk V and the Howa 1500. Keep in mind the Howa's grandad was the Sako Finnbear, which Howa did a copy of up until the late 70s called the Mountain Bear and which the 1500 shares a lot of features from, such as a nice big barrel lug. So a nice combination between the Weatherby MkV and a Sako, not to be sneezed at.

    If Weatherby thought the Vanguard was a mistake, they have had FIFTY years to stop. But, even in 1975 we heard that rumor so decided to make a new one used by testing it at the range. It performed every bit as well as the 700 BDL, finishes were maybe a bit nicer. My opinion is the Vanguard is as advertised and not "junk".

One piece solid bolt with a twist off back that makes bolt cleaning and maintenance super easy. No cheap barrel nut. Flat bottom machined receiver - no bar stock here! Mine appears to be identical to yours other than caliber and scope. Mine is in 25/06, I don't remember the brand of 3X9 Scope that was on it when I bought it. And I'm too lazy to go up to the gun room and dig it out to find out. This rifle filled 3 holes on my wish list. I've wanted a Weatherby rifle, since I saw one hanging on the wall behind the bank manager's desk in the bank in Elsinore Kalifornia when I was in the 2nd grade, I'm 72 now. I never had a 25/06 or a Howa built rifle. So like I said 3 holes on the list. First time I took it to the range I fired one shot just to clear any lube or residue from the bore then fired 3 shots that I could cover with a nickel at 100 yards. Stopped right there and went on shooting just for fun with an AR and an SKS. Love that Vanguard.

I have a specific question about your Weatherby because I, too, bought my Weatherby Vanguard Select .30-06 Synthetic (the Walmart version of a Vanguard Series 2) on Clearance ($249.00) This brings up my question: is your rifle a Vanguard Select or Series 2, or the first generation ‘Vanguard?’ Before I bought my Vanguard Select, I read a LOT of forum threads where guys noted that the original Vanguard disappointed in some ways, so Weatherby corrected those flaws in the Series 2. Folks who had shot/owned both generations of Vanguard preferred the Series 2, hands-down. when you did the first batch of adjustment and then wondered why the next batch went higher, you mentioned that you were holding bottom of the plate prior to adjustment, then you adjusted to the centre, and held centre on the next batch.
    You moved it down enough if you'd sighted centre, not sighted at the bottom of the plate.

    I bought a used Weatherby Vanguard years ago. It's the black plastic stock, or whatever it's made of. It's a 30-06 and has digested a lot of handloaded ammo and brought home a lot of meat both deer and elk. I've certainly got nothing bad to say about it and can give it much admiration.

    I learned something new from the comments here today. The tap it with brass to smack it or bump the butt stock. I've had a scope do that to me and found a loose mount. Then I had one that was just so far out I loosened everything and retightened according to the windage and that brought it in. Both of those the rifles came with the scope. If I don't put the rings on and bed the scope myself I can't be sure it's right, especially if it doesn't act right. Still, some good shootin from a beautiful rifle.

      @@WHOTEEWHO the scope is equally as important as the rifle itself. Some would say they are more important. If I’m going to use anything that will either be used to protect myself or loved ones life or harvesting an animal while hunting, I’d never take the responsibility of using anything less than mid-level quality in anything being used for such uses. But that’s just me. I’d rather wait an extra month or two to be able to save a little more and get quality.

    Just bought one in .308 with the walnut stock in the oil finish - classy rifle, but the action on it doesn't evoke "quality", rather it evokes "KMart". Still waiting on the backordered Leupold, but guessing it will shoot sub 1 MOA. I know it is a HOWA 1500 other than the stock, but Weatherby should have insisted that the action get a bit more attention. My circa 1990's Model 70s have the jeweled action that is Silk but they are not as pretty.

    According to my old Marlin sighting-in guide a 270 130 gr. bullet at 3140 fps you could sight in at 28 yards and it will return to zero at 240 yards. It should be 2.25 in. high at 100 yards and 4.25 in. low at 300 yards. It has a good point blank range. If you us this method every shot at 28 should be inside the 10 otherwise at distance they will be way off. This method does work and saves ammo.
