      oh most certainly, in fact places like the USSR which tried to centrally plan things did it like so - their pencils were much worse than the ones in the West, but they existed nonetheless. However, they too depended upon trade with the outside world. No Soviet central planner thought of the world market as something to direct, they took it and the free exchange happening on it for granted. Moreover, not even the Soviet Union could completely dispense with the notion of markets. Even their centrally planned factories still bought and sold things, and used money, and prices, which they set by the example of the foreign free market economies, in order to do a lot of the work of guiding the production.
      For all that monumental effort, they got a shittier pencil, and a doomed economy to boot.

    • @cravinbob
      @cravinbob 4 роки тому +1

      The justice system is The People. Or was. A prosecutor is supposed to see that justice is served and not how many convictions they can rack up.
      Freedom and liberty are for Independent citizens who do not interfere with the Rights and Freedoms of others so a justice system is not needed but we were given free will and sociopaths. If you take from another that which is not yours then others will take from you until everyone is doing it, which they think makes it okay.
      Tell a truth to a liar and he will think you are lying because he is a liar so he believes everybody is. That makes communicating with others pointless and isolates everyone.

    I don't worship at the altar of the 'invisible hand', but this essay is a wonderful description of the spider's web of production & industry that goes in to everything around us. As I write in the UK 'Christmas is threatened' headlines are everywhere on account of uncertainty whether the food for the festival will be around or not.
    The reason: High Nitrogen prices. Fertilizer companies can't buy so much & have slowed production as a result. Carbon Dioxide (CO2) is a by product of fertilizer production. Because the fertilizer production slowed there's now not enough CO2 being made. Because of that pigs can't be slaughtered, food shelf life is crashing as the gas is used to preserve packaged food, alcoholic beverages can't be carbonated (if that continues expect revolution in the UK), mobile disco's are putting their rates up - the list goes on.

      This video essay breaks down every single step in the production of the common pencil, and the point of doing this is that the production requires the collaborative effort of countless peoples, not one of whom could perform every last step involved in this vast process. Furthermore, no single centralized entity was coordinating all the efforts of those involved.
      Couple this with the knowledge that there are countless additional things produced that have even more ingredients and components involved in their creation (and thus a more extensive history than that of the pencil), and you might realize that any effort to implement central planning of industry is doomed to fail.

    Interesting. The wonder of pencil creation is a good story, but its conclusion is spurious.
    What about mail delivery to and from remote rural communities and single farms? Isn't there some value in connectivity and coherence? Don't people leave the countryside for want of connections to the outside world? Is that really what we want? Unfettered markets may be good at creating all sorts of stuff which people are willing to pay for, but they come with serious problems as regards their distribution; and things that may be useful but which no one special is ready or able to pay for remain undone.

    For those of you that have found their way here who may be of a Communistic persuasion, you might scoff at the prospect of including the cup of coffee in the creation of the pencil. What you need to realize is that you can't do anything other than include said cup of coffee, as your professed philosophy is an all-encompassing one. As such, realize that in order to arrive at the glorious proletarian utopia you seek, you will have to not only coordinate the efforts of this, but the efforts of the producers of the many millions of other products from all around the globe, many of which have more extensive genealogies than that of the humble pencil.
    Good luck squaring that particular circle.

    Incredible stuff on practical understanding of global economics, but lost me at faith in the invisible hand of the market. Not super easy to draw the conclusion that individual creativity is stifled by regulation from this. The market doesn't really care about the individual, or their creativity. Regardless of their role in the market. The market only cares about what the people in the market care about, and that's usually themselves. Because people are imperfect.

      Just like pencil manufacturers only deal with the final step of assembly, the Post Office only deals with collection, sorting, delivery and SECURITY. Until DeJoy hit the scene I had no idea how much one guy could fmess up the whole thing.

    Pretty good until it went off the rails confusing supply and demand with a literal miracle from God.

    "Merely organize society to act in harmony with this lesson."
    Pretty good essay until it went into this hopeful cutesy shit. But hey, let people believe in these infallible individuals.
