A great classical pianist Horowitz quote comes to mind here. The interviewer commented "You make it look easy". Horowitz responded after playing a 2 hour perfect concert on the piano, "It is easy". These surfers make it look easy and I bet they'd say the same.

Those second reef chip ins are yuuuge. Dear lord. With all those people I’d lose it. Pure chaos plus maxing size, not for me. These guys are nuts.
So you are sitting in the car park and there are seventy guys out. "Yeah I'm gonna go out and get slotted.....heaps of waves for everyone?"
Some of those guys out obviously get whichever wave they look at (JJF, Kelly, anyone with the last name Ho, etc) but the rest of em I’m genuinely curious as to why they even bother paddling out. Pipe’s a great wave, I totally get that. But it’s also been whored into absolute oblivion by the surf industry and the 9000 or so Vlogs on UA-cam that center around it. Which means they’ll be 100+ guys out anytime it breaks for the rest of the worlds existence. So again, why the Hell bother (unless you’re a juiced-in heavy or pro)?
I’ve heard names like Nathen Florence talking about sometimes waiting hours for a wave when it’s firing and at peak absurdity- where’s that leave the rest of the 98% regular type folks that fill the lineup? Seems like it’s about lottery odds of catching a decent wave. Much greater odds though of catching a rouge board to the face due to all the congestion or, worse yet, getting a crack or two on the beach from uncle Eddie and the boys for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
TLDR: Other surfable waves DO exist.

It appears to me a shit ton of guys paddle out, and paddle in and tell their mates they surfed Pipe, yet didn’t get a wave and just got in the way.
My thoughts, exactly. I saw what appeared to be a dozen plus kooks digging half heartedly for several of the biggest waves then backing out at the last second, with one guy in the most critical section dropping in and eating it. All because the kooks to his left were a potential danger and forced him to hesitate.
Negotiating that crowd is just crazy. I think the locals need to enforce some territorial rules, and by that I mean threats of physical violence followed by actual violence.
you can be sure and bet on the fact that YES some of the locals will go total HAM on some of the fools out in that line up and when they get back to shore ...

... As crowded as it is, it seems fairly orderly - obviously (almost) everyone out there knows what they're doing. Only takes a few Kooks to throw a fly in the ointment. Hell, even the spongers had a couple really good Ones !!

I agree with bill burr, the pandemic didn't think out the heard enough. That is a ridiculous amount of people, and it's hard to dog anyone for wanting to surf, I get it, it's a lot of fun.

You could make a slow motion video on this alone. Watching Surfers trying to paddle for or avoid the wave.
There should be tickets given out to 10 surfers every hour to minimise madness.
