We will be using a capo on the 2nd fret to eliminate ALL of the barre chords. That's right, you will be able to play this amazing song without any barre chords. Amazing!

This is the best tutorial video on Hotel California song, very detailed and patient instruction on strumming compared to other channels. You are a great teacher in indeed Lauren. Only thing I am not great fan of , is a capo thing
I've been playing consistently for a couple of years. No natural talent but a lot of perseverance plus Im only doing this for myself. I just came across Laurens videos, outstanding! She seems to teach the exact way i want to play. Kudos young lady!

Great lesson! I worked out these chords myself with capo on two a couple of years ago but in the intro play a few more single strings. However I didn't get the E7 so I will try that out. Great tip about the 3rd finger pivot point between Fmaj7/C and C.
Using capo on fret 2 also means you can play the outro solo too which is good fun to learn. Thanks for posting. Best wishes Bob (England). 😊

Lauren, OMG thank you a million time for this one (and the hundreds of other fantastic tutorials)!!! You have no idea how much you have inspired and helped me the past 3 months. The first two months was like hell... Thinking no way i will be able to play something decent the first year... or maybe ever! But suddenly, hard work really pays off, and i managed to play most of the basic chords, and finally can smoothly play the 'down down up up down up' strumming pattern. So i tried this song and after two days practicing I was able to blew my family and friends away! :D What a feeling! Still a long way to go, let's be realistic haha. Next step for me: learning to sing AND strum 'DDUUDU' at the same time. My brain says no at the moment :P All the best and keep up the amazing stuff you do!

Cool! Thanks. I been self learning for over 50 years. I play a few songs just to amuse myself. Last week I was with some family members and they wanted me to play Hotel California. They weren't interested in Spirit in the Sky or For What It's Worth or Ever of Destruction :b I had to tell them I'd have to skip on that one as I had never tried it. I think I can work this version and satisfy them next time. 🙂

Very good lesson, this is basically how I play it but using the barre chords instead of the capo to get better voicings and to some hammer ons and add some of the picked melody notes. There are at least 5 overlaid guitars in the studio recording after all so there is no way to do this song perfectly solo but playing around the 2nd Fret Bm voicing sounds more like the Eagles version overall than using the 7th Fret voicings Don Felder plays it at (again, when playing it solo). If you have multiple guitars then you absolutely spread the workload and voicings around and this song gets exponentially easier to play. The next step up is to play this song on a 12 string where it really comes alive.

It might be worth mentioning that the dreaded barred F chord shape is a little easier to nail with the capo in place. Good opportunity to practice it. 😊
