I've skinned a lot of skunks and I now cut the sacs out and put them in a sealed jar. I use a syringe to take some of the essence out when I'm making call lure or I pack the glands in salt to grind up later to add to bait. Thank you for showing folks how easy it is to make use of skunks.
Kansas trapper! Just wanted to write you a quick comment. Your videos have been so helpful. Whenever I have a qusestion on skinning or tanning. You always seem to find a way to step by step instructions. Thank you for donating your time. Sure you've helped many trappers like myself.
I just picked a big one off the side of the road, got to the “triangle” part and accidentally cut into the gland. That’s not a mistake I ever want to make again. I really need the tool you use to hang them
picked up a road kill a few days ago, watch this a few times, skinned, removed the sacks without a problem. waiting on my post flesher to get here so I can work the hide proper and board. thanks for running your channel it's very informative.... yes fire Obama. ole Rebel Dog is passed out on that recliner!!!
Skunks were my biggest fear as a novice. Thanks for making it less so. I am curious about removing the essence - doesn't it stink up the shed when you put it in the jar from the syringe?
I used to do some trapping but it's been several years ago, your video brought back lot of memories about catching skunks and porcupines and trying to get them out of "leg-holds" without killing them (control-poles sort-of worked, as I recall). Anyway, I enjoyed you video.
I like to use a little DAWN dish soap on the ones that have sprayed ...the dish soap helps lift the oil , which holds the scent off a bit better than " just water"
You make a great presentation on all of your videos. Thank you for posting in such a clear and concise manner. You can tell you know what you are doing. I trapped my first skunk on accident. I can now go dispatch without getting sprayed. I will come back and comment on how that went. LOL Thanks again and happy fourth of July.
Thanks for the great videos! Just did my first skunk and it was exactly as described with skinning and extracting the essence! Keep the great content coming!
haha.you make it look easy. i did this when i was like 12..im 46 now. i cut the entire bung loose and squirted it into a baby food jar.. by squeezing it. bawwhaww.. great vids man..
Wait what happened? I have absolutely no idea what I am doing but I have a roadkilled skunk that I felt bad for and brought home to bury but finally got the guts to do this....what happened in your story after you did that? Did it work?
Great videos I'm from Australia we do it a hell of a lot different over here .we only skin foxes rabbits and hares ,deer . Never ever seen a tail stripper in my life been skinning foxes for over 40 years.love the pulling machine . good use of the Steele will definitely be using that, really was interesting watching the videos ,by the way what do you do with all the carcasses. will be waiting for more videos . Cheers Dean
It's sure helped on everything else, I'm kicking myself for working so hard with a lumpy wood beam and crapy fleshing knives....I was done before dark today :)
I skinned a skunk today. I used a rather dull knife and a pair of scissors. I didn't hang her up when I skinned her. I found her in the MIDDLE of a busy highway. I almost got ran over. It took me 4 hours. I did an open skinning. I tore off half off her tail. There are only 3 very small holes in the pelt somehow. I should have watched this, haha. In my defense... It was the first mammal I have ever skinned, and only the second animal I have ever skinned. (The first was a gopher snake, he turned out perfectly somehow. :P) I still have to flesh her and and I have loads of fat and meat on her skin. I can't even see the skin though all of the fat. 😬 I hope my extreme failure made someone cringe! 😜
So I did this a while back and tried using a couple sticks to strip the tail since I don’t have a stripper and an old timer told me that was a fine way to do it. Well the last 2 inches or so of flesh came off, which was probably 6-8 inches of fur. I figure I could see back on after fleshing and tanning, it when I went to flesh all the fur just came out. That however did not happen when I fleshed the part of the tail still attached to the body part of the pelt. Should you not flesh the tail like you do the rest? I was thinking maybe it got chewed on or injured at some point which was maybe why it came off in the first place. Any thoughts?
So how to you deal with skunk spraying you or itself when its trapped? I trapped one and he went ape shit spraying when I came withing 15 yards. I had to shoot from there and I waited a few hours to loose him from the trap. The smell was all over him, me (regardless that I left), and I pretty much didn't want to deal with it after that.
I knew this really old Russian dude that told me back in the day, when he was a kid, his mother would render skunk fat and save the oil. Anytime he got a lung ailment she would give him a spoonful of the oil. He swore by it. I render fats and use the various oils to make lures.
I wish I had watched this video an hour ago! I had a skunk take refuge under my house and I set a trap and caught him. Dispatched him in his head....smh. I don’t mind the scent because it smells like a strong onion. But I really wish I had watched this video beforehand.
got a few i plan to skin soon wish me luck i will try your idea the only difference is i want to keep them for taxidermy an tips you? any advice would be great thank
Hey o. Skinned my first skunk today. Wasn't planning on it. I set a trap hoping to get a raccoon and got a skunk instead. Your video was great gave me what I needed. I used the hind leg to hind leg method cut with a precision knife just below the skin. Skunk kinda stunk still but it really wasn't too bad. I easily avoided the essence glands and got a real nice hide. Thanks for your vid as its what I went off of!!!
Thanks for this. My friend and I been having skunk trouble. We both have chickens. She's been shooting them in the head, so thanks for the advice about where to shoot them. I was thinking, well dang, if Im gonna shoot them, does anyone use the fur and the meat? The fur is pretty, can't something be made from it, and the meat fed to my dogs? Sending this to my friend. Thanks.
this is a helpful video because my dad is scared of getting sprayed but i am not scared and he won't let me skin a skunk that my grandpa trapped endless i know where the glands are. p.s I Very Much like the FIRE OBAMA!!!
Rimfires. Skunks shot in the chest die quickly, I've shot them with .22lr, .22 mag, .17hmr and pellet rifles, Honestly a high velocity pellet rifle is a fine skunk rifle. You can get pretty close to a skunk if you are hunting them so you don't need alot of gun. And if you trap one it's real easy shooting.
Are you sure that isn't actually a female kitty cat that walked under white paint spilling? I've seen cats get white paint spilled on their back and even french skunks are tricked into thing it's a skunk.
I got skunk spray on my boots onetime and soaked then in matter juice for few days then sprayed them off and still had a little smell the moths later guess I got use to it and got in this girls car it was raining and she smelt them dude every time they got wet the smell cane back lmao finnally it went away
These animals a very smart and family oriented. They cry real tears. You have no idea what a cool animal this is. They are just as protective as a watchdog.
deanna l They were there before you. Why on earth do you have a right to kill them off in their own home? Cause your bigger and have sneaky traps and guns? And not smart enough or too poor to give them a safe enviornment? You might be a POS.
@@deannal3678 For future trapping (they kill my chickens too grrr!) if you put a black garbage bag over the end of your trap when you set it, he can't spray you, walk up and grab the trap and take him for a swim. Also, they love love marshmallows, we zip tie one right above the trip plate, works every time ;)

Great video. Just got my first skunk and was able to take care of him.
First rule of gun safety *Don't look down the barrel*
First rule of skunk field clean. Stare *DIRECTLY* into the barrel as you diddle the triggers.
I'm about to do this for the first time in about 10 minutes. Thanks!
Great info on avoiding the "gun barrel". Looking forward to fleshing and boarding.
Huntnfishnuts thanks
Glad you are doing skunks too, I always seem the blaze the hair when I flesh them. Looking forward to part 2

Interesting stuff!
I subbed for the other content, but the skunk stuff is pretty interesting.
Good job, still haven't got up enough courage to try one but this helped keep up the good work and videos look forward to part two...
mark hess thanks
Great video, thanks!!!
Liked your signs in the back of your fur shed!!
***** right on. thanks
As your doing this you’re kinda starring down the gun barrel 😂
Jasper the cat got out of dodge lol
Lol he knows the routine.
Great videos! I need a friend like you! I figured it would be the other way and they would spray if lung shot.
Hahahaha! I love the Bluetick sleeping in the background!

I have caught a few skunks and just left them cause I didnt want to mess with them. I just might try one next time! good video!
AULTimate OUTDOORS yeah give em a try they are a really neat fur bearer
Thanks for sharing the tips on skinning a skunk!! Doesn’t seem as intimidating now!!
Good job
Ol doggy sleeping on the chair catching some zzzzz’s
What do you do with the essence that you extracted...?
J Man the essence can be used as scent for catching other animals or you can also sell it along with the fur
You can throw it at drug dealers cars.
A really good prank
I like the steel trick for legs thanks
Thanks bro!
What do you do to prevent getting rabies?
What kind of knife is your first cut knife ?
Any pointers for skinning. I have ended up cutting or ripping the tail off of two skunks so far. It just seems to rip on me.
So I did this a while back and tried using a couple sticks to strip the tail since I don’t have a stripper and an old timer told me that was a fine way to do it. Have you eaten a skunk before or do you simply throw away the meat?
So how to you deal with skunk spraying you or itself when its trapped? I trapped one and he went ape shit spraying when I came withing 15 yards. Scott Comella yes lots of use's for the stuff
Beautiful pelt on that skunk I would have travel 100 miles to trap skunk.
Skunks are pretty
New to watching this....what do you do with the meat?
That is my question also, what you do with all the carcasses? And the essence? Thanks for your video.
I got one with my bow once. It was a 38 step shot hit the neck. He sprayed 😂
I wish I had watched this video an hour ago! I had a skunk take refuge under my house and I set a trap and caught him. Dispatched him in his head....smh. I don’t mind the scent because it smells like a strong onion. But I really wish I had watched this video beforehand.
Great video as always "Looking down a loaded gun" lol
I just got a road kill skunk, i hope i don't get shot
Disgusting.

Awesome work buddy 👍
Is the skinning process the same, with a skunk that has been run over, and has sprayed?
Hey o. Skinned my first skunk today. Wasn't planning on it. I set a trap hoping to get a raccoon and got a skunk instead.

I use the fur for wall hanging. The meat you can give to your dogs! :)
You can make mittens and clothing too
How do you get past the smell ? I want to clean a skunk fur but after being sprayed I’m scared. 😂
Hey Stu, wondering if there is any benefit to draining the essence before skinning it? Have you ever tried that?? Thanks
from my experience, it leaks onto the fur
Another great video, thank you!
Sam Rickrode thanks
Staring down the gun barrel 😂😂
When removing the essence from a skunk does it smell when putting it in the glass jar?
Pa Outdoorsman yes. its no different than if they would spray in the air naturally
Nice job buddy and thanks for sharing.
Did you dispatch with acetone or bullet?
"If you have a 'first cut knife' it'll really help". What's a ''first cut knife", anyone? A brand? A shape of blade? Said at 1:45
Looks like a Bolen triangle pelter knife!
How do you know where the eyes and ears are at when you have the skin pulled down?
+samuel Sessock easy to tell in relation to were you at on the head. you can feel the cartilage and eye sockets
this is a helpful video because my dad is scared of getting sprayed but i am not scared and he won't let me skin a skunk that my grandpa trapped endless i know where the glands are.
p.s I Very Much like the FIRE OBAMA!!!
Always have a few heaves when I try skinning pole cat
What do you do with the carcass's when you are done. Do you sell the meat?
Doesn’t it still stink bad, and the odor still stay in your fur shed??
Using tool steel, especially honing steel to leverage stuff makes my heart drop into my essence glands.
Just stumbled onto your videos.......great library material...
The essence that you extract, do you sell that or just use how ???
Ken Steger I sell it and use it in my baits.
So now that I’ve dispatched the skunk and it sprayed, how do I get the scent removed from the hide?
Never mind.
Can you cook it?
After the wash do u put him in the dryer
Greg Stamatopoulos ya
Where can i buy the needle
Skunks essence
What do people do with the "essence"?
musicisbrilliant bait making mainly. but it is also used in cosmetics and perfumes
what animals are baited with it? thanks
all predators and scavengers are attracted to it...very effective lure
What caliber do you use for them
👍👍👍

Wtf
forgot to mention i live in town will be doing this in the woods on a farm should i worry of animals when is am skinning?
Can I wash them in my washing machine that I wash my clothes in?
I killed my skunk in the head and it dident spay
He said: If you dispatch in the head, they will spray almost every time!!!😲😲😲😲
Seriously, does this animal even taste good?
Yep. Better than a beef steak. I recommend the hind quarter
I got skunk spray on my boots onetime and soaked then in matter juice for few days then sprayed them off and still had a little smell the moths later guess I got use to it and got in this girls car it was raining and she smelt them dude every time they got wet the smell cane back lmao finnally it went away
I agree with that sign 100000000000000000000 percent if he was still the president
These animals a very smart and family oriented. They cry real tears. You have no idea what a cool animal this is. They are just as protective as a watchdog.
can't wait to skin up and tan the little bastard that killed 12 of my chickens, he's my trophy now

witch slap those skunks are bitchs and need to die. 40 s&w blow his head off
If I did that then I couldn't use the skull, I don't know if I can upload a photo of it...I drowned him though.
