The 'your game over' thing got into Super Paper Mario as well and used pretty much as an euphemism for death and for me, it's canon that in this universe people say 'i'll game over you/end your game' instead of 'i'm gonna kill you/end your life"
It was implied canon even in TTYD, even all the way in the prologue. One of the harbor workers says they "wouldn't get involved in" the scrap between Goombella and Crump, "even if they had an *extra life".*
I mean people were already getting pissy over the minor dialogue changes that already existed, tbh they probably would’ve started plotting to storm Nintendo headquarters if the Toad kid dialogue was touched in any way lmao

But I’m referring to smaller changes like the different names Bowser calls Kammy and the goombas not flirting with Goombella anymore, the fact that some people got mad over those is crazy to me

I think that you need to be crazy or super smart to see the fourth wall. Seeing the wall doesn’t make you snap, it just takes a conscious effort of intelligence and/or detaching yourself from reality to realize the truth.

Also, Paper Mario happens in a book, Paper Mario: TTYD happens in a play, Super Paper Mario happens on a Computer.
I personally feel like fourth-wall breaks work so well with TTYD because the whole thing is themed as a play/live show, with the curtains and all. Even at the end during the credits you see the whole cast again and the audience even turns back to the player. It wouldn't work that well with other games because it isnt that obvious that the whole thing is a story
