This is a temple artform called theyyam. Its mostly performed at sacred groves in northern part of Kerala. The legend behind this ritual is that the person who dress up as theyyam after follwing some rituals will get blessings from god and the god will enter his body while he is in that costume. There are many varieties of theyyam and each of them have their on story or legend behind them
In karnataka too In shimmoga a small village by the name KUDLI where the two rivers tunga bhadra meet there is a man who is muslim but a Hindu God named Bhootappa or Bhootanatheshwara comes on his body . This as far as my family history goes i know that we have been following this god from 600 years
