- This temple, which I am going to take you to today, has so many unbelievable things. First of all, this 3000-year-old temple stands on a large, beautiful pond. In that pond, there is a crocodile that is completely vegetarian. When I first heard about this temple, I was completely shocked and couldn't believe it. So, I checked many news reports and videos and verified it. From that time onwards, this temple has been on my priority list. Today, with the blessings of God, I got an opportunity to visit this temple.
To visit this temple, if you are coming by train like me, you have to get down at Kumbala Railway Station, which is in Kasargod district, Kerala, India. Right next to the railway station, you can see Kumbala Bus Station. From there, you have to take a bus to Naikap Bus Stop. After that, you need to walk 1.5 kilometers to the temple.
We reached there around 9 in the morning, and the temple was not crowded at all. The temple and the premises were so beautiful and blissful. First, we went inside the temple for darshan and asked the history and significance of this temple from the temple authority.
We were shocked to hear that this temple has a direct connection with the famous Padmanabha Temple in Thiruvananthapuram. Here, Sri Anantha Padbhanabha is depicted as seated on the divine serpent Anantha, while in the Sri Padmanabha Swamy Temple of Thiruvananthapuram, the God is reclining on Anantha.
Apart from the main deity, God Mahavishnu, there are many other deities also worshiped here.
The crocodile's history is also very vast. The villagers and temple priests named the crocodile "Babiya." Unfortunately, last year, the previous Babiya died, and the most shocking part is that on November 9th, 2023, a new crocodile appeared in the same pond.
In 1946, the Britishers attacked this temple and disfigured the vigrahas and killed the first crocodile. So, after independence in 1947, a new crocodile was found there by villagers. In 1972, the temple authority and villagers renovated the temple and replaced the disfigured vigraha with a new vigraha made of Panchaloha. However, after that, the number of devotees had reduced drastically, and the temple fund almost became empty. Then, the committee conducted Astamangala Prashna there. They found that changing the vigraha from Kadasharkara to Panchaloha was a big mistake. So, they made the rare Kadasharkara vigraha in 8 years and replaced the Panchaloha one.
I would say this temple is a must-visit, and the temple and premises are so divine that you feel like staying in this temple longer.
