👩🏽‍💻 I'm Dr. Becky Smethurst, an astrophysicist at the University of Oxford (Christ Church). I love making videos about science with an unnatural level of enthusiasm. I like to focus on how we know things, not just what we know. And especially, the things we still don't know. If you've ever wondered about something in space and couldn't find an answer online - you can ask me! My day job is to do research into how supermassive black holes can affect the galaxies that they live in. In particular, I look at whether the energy output from the disk of material orbiting around a growing supermassive black hole can stop a galaxy from forming stars.

You're right about the Artemis shot being the "Blue Marble" for a new generation. The thing that struck me when I saw it was that it's the first time I've seen a picture of the Earth like that partially in shadow, I always think of the Earth in its "full" state. Was very cool.

@@ThatBoomerDude56 "Artemis" is the name of the program. The spacecraft is called "Orion". and the rocket is called the Space Launch System.
But Curious. How do you think is it "obsolete"? The demands of deep-space re-entry will pretty much require that any deep space manned spacecraft look like Orion (or Apollo before it) . iIe. a blunt cone.
And no nothing Musk is working on will be capable of deep space re-entry.

And Jupiter being the brightest thing in the sky once in awhile was something that I won a bet with my nephew over - he didn't know that any of the gas giants ever got that bright in the sky, and was _certain_ it was Venus or even Mars! 🤣 He forgot that Aunt Mary was a huge astronomy fan. 😏

I can't remember if it were the Eta Aquarids or the Geminids, but around 2007 / 08 my friends and I saw a BURST of meteors. A real meteor shower. Like those mediaeval pictures portray a shower of hundreds of tiny faint streaks per second, this lasted about 5 minutes (with a ramp-up to the peak and down again a day or two each side). We were expecting a peak of activity but not the burst like we saw. I've not seen anything like it since.
It's hard to believe your eyes without friends there seeing the same thing.

Dr. Becky. Good evening. The live stream from Artemis looked like a cartoon movie . But there is a reason why. I will explain: the transmission rate of Artemis is 50Mbit per sec or ~6.33Mbyte per sec. Therefore in live video stream of 50 photos per second , every photos is no more than 120Kbyte. Hence, the resolution in live stream was medium. Cannot be HD in live stream. If Artemis transmission power is 100Watt per second, and the distance from earth 380000km. And the parabolic antenna radius is 35M. Abd the antenna gain of artemis is low close to one (it is not voyager which was 64000 the concentration of Energy in space). The Earth's deep space parabolic antenna received only 2*10^(-13) watt. You cannot have hight rate of information in 2*10^(-13). Therefore to see streaming in 4K it is impossible. You need parabolic antenna in Artemis with high gain . However there is a DSLM camera with width lenn. For high quality photos . These photos have very high resolution and the are published latter after hours.

I stayed up until Orion separated from the ICPS so I was pretty tired at work the next day - I'm in the Pacific time zone or GMT -8h. I only recently learned about the amount of radiation the Apollo astronauts received in the Van Allen Belts and was quite concerned about sending more people through that region. I was very happy that they are testing potential shielding suits for astronauts to wear when we return to the moon. I also always love to hear more about JWST.

19:01 🎶"I saw the news today, oh boy. A rock came down in Winchcombe Gloucestershire. And though the rock was rather small, they gathered up it all. Now they know the isotopes are similar to Terran crust..."🎶

Re: Winchcombe Meteorite - Dr. Smethurst, it would be very nice if you could explain in some of your future videos what is theorized to be the reason for different isotopic composition of hydrogen in comets vs. C chondrites.
Thanks for the great video, as always!

I ordered your book when it first came out from Amazon. It was supposed to be here by the middle of November. Apparently there was such a delay and now I'll get it probably the first week of December. I got one for my son too because he really likes physics.

Would you be able to make a video explaining more about micrometeorites? Sizes, how frequent they are, speeds and the damage they can do etc?

I was 10 years old when man first landed on the moon. Hope I will still be around the place when they next land there. Can't wait.

I am thankful that Amazon delivered my copy of "A Brief History of Black Holes" yesterday instead of waiting until January! Time to start chapter 2...

A wee bit O' nostalgia. Many decades back from primary school into University, being told, outer space is completely empty, thus devoid of anything. Hoot! even as a kid, just say'n. I'd ask, where did these meteor shower come from, random shooting stars, etc... then being told you are too big for your breeches.
This just another great learning moment, yes they should have realized this at this modern time, now they'll plan better in the future and advance tech for high speed and defensive systems.
    Onward & Higher! Thank you.
