My grandma called a full moon a strawberry moon. It was planting season and soon she would drag us grandkids around to local farms to pick fresh fruits, berries and veggies. As a kid it seemed like work but as an adult in my 50s I miss those trips.
building great memories can sometimes be work, but it is much more valuable than its metaphorical weight in gold!
I have kids and it is truly a chore just to get them do anything together as a family. But I know they will appreciated.....decades later!
@@stephenc2481 Guess the life lesson there was that "Reap the fruit of your labours" quote. Also, "pie", everyone loves pie.
I strongly suspect that the strawberry farmers expect the kids to red around the moth and factor that into their prices...
Watching Dr Becky getting excited about a toe nail moon is infinitely superior to reading Neil Degrassi Tyson calling the lunar eclipse unspectacular on Twitter. Thanks Dr Becky!
I'm wondering where all the pinhole star globes went. What were they called...?
Careful, otherwise the boring scientists will throw you to the kids.
I know most people pronounce Jezero, with a J like in jazz but its proper pronunciation is actually as if it were spelled Yezero, which every Slavic person recognizes as "lake". The details vary between the languages from that family (jezero / jezioro / oziero) but it still sounds very familiar if its not mispronounced.
Getting into the part of the year where we no longer see any stars up here in the nordics, but I still enjoy watching the segments about what people further south can see 😅
I'm in Alaska and we are having the same great problem of there being 24hr daylight
Dr Becky, I've just recently found your channel and I'm obsessed. Thank you for all your hard work.
I adore anything astronomy related. I have aspirations to go into the physics field. Thanks again.
Good on ya Christen. Study hard, stay focused. But most of all, make sure you're enjoying what you're doing!
Becky, you are far and away the most knowledgeable astrophysicist on UA-cam. You clearly explain the most complex scientific studies and discoveries in common layman's terms that anyone can understand. Your charming personality is an added bonus. Thank you for your hard work and effort.
I am so impressed with smart people who has passion for what they do. They do amazing things.
9:50 that comparison is the exact kind of thing I've been so excited to start seeing. Thanks for the great updates Dr. Becky!
I just discovered your channel a few days ago, and I'm already hooked! Thank you for the excellent summaries of space news and your thoughtful analysis of complex topics. I absolutely love the excitement, passion, and joy that you bring to your discussions!
Certain UA-camrs' News is quite literally better than anything going out over the air waves. This is one of them.
Dr. Becky you are my go to youtube channel. I am awestruck at your intelligence and enthusiasm for the cosmos. I sit enthralled at your insights and usually cant wait for your next post. My eyes have been opened wide as I have been asking questions about the night sky since I began to walk I think. Thanks for your answers. *smiles*
This is the first time in 10 years I'm seeing a "1 minute ago" on a video so I just have to comment something before watching the video. Thanks universe :)
Meanwhile I didn't get notified of this video until 4 days later 😅. Amazing that we can take pictures of black holes billions of miles away but UA-cam can't program a reliable notification function.
You're quickly becoming my favorite space news channel. Keep up the good work!
Another great video! I always enjoy how you break down complex subjects and make them easier to understand. I enjoyed seeing you on the NOVA Universe Revealed series. I'm surprised those shows took so long to recognize your talent. Hopefully your opportunities increase as your expertise is recognized.
When Dr. Becky first mentioned Apophis, did anyone else have SG-1 flashbacks, or was is just me?
(yes, see my comment history lol)
all we need now is some Ra, some Sokar, some Hathor, some Cronus, some Ba’al, some Yu, and let’s not forget the half-ascended Anubis 🙃
This, after a long and tedious day, is EXACTLY what I needed. Thank you.
Thanks for your enthusiasm Dr. Becky.
I'm not a huge astronomy buff but I like to follow what's happening. Your vids make it fun.
Thank you Dr. Becky. I like reading your take on new developments in astrophysics. Also, your outtakes at the end of your videos are very entertaining :)
Dr Becky, I just found your channel last night. Not just that you make astrophysics easier to understand for the rest of the world. Thank you. And I think you can fit into Big Bang Theory sitcom seamlessly. You have the knowledge, the expertise and very natural in front of camera. I say this genuinely, not with sarcasm like Penny has!
Always a must watch!
Great sponsor message, I normally skip past them but this one actually interests me :)
Ooh just had to pause it at 9:00 when you mentioned "serendipitous results."
I am already 100% geeked out on JWST as it is, but that thought just gave me chills. This waiting period between knowing answers are coming and actually receiving them is exciting but also agonizing.
On the other hand... around mid summer is the time of the year to look for Noctilucent clouds, or night shining clouds,...give it a try :)
So i dont watch often but whenever I do you always have such interesting topics and I need to watch more
UA-cam alg. just made me discover your AMAZING channel ! -- instantly subscribed bcs the idea of interesting monthly news is so much better than 'mindnumbing television news' ! Keep up your great work Dr. Becky
Thanks for the news, dr. Becky! 😊
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Really well presented, explained in non-technical way.
Thoroughly enjoyed, keep it up.
D
Thank you Dr Becky another great video 👍
The answer is quite simpel: it jumped from joy when becoming aware that you saw it and landed on it's back! (and loving it!) ❤
Wow, Dr. Becky, I didn't know you were _that_ far north! And I see you're again wearing my favorite color of nail polish, too!
Well done. Your enthusiasm is infective, I am now a subscriber.
Thank you for bringing this and the ecliptic to my attention, I've been gazing so far out, I forgot to pay attention to the backyard. Brilliant.👍
The happiest channel on YT!
So cool to see you show the alignment of the planets going from Venus bottom left and the others up to top right. I've been looking at them every morning on my way to work (Christchurch, NZ about 5:30 am) with Venus bottom right in the eastern sky and the others going up to the left. Really neat to see the opposite perspective. Thanks for your vids.
Dr. Becky always makes these astronomical events so exciting. It’s also nice that an Astrophysicist can tone down the tech stuff and explain things to the average person!! Thanks Dr. Becky 😄
watching this channel is literally the best part of the day. thanks for all the hard work
My God. If I was blind I would still be a big fan of this woman but, I’m not and it’s hard to look away. I love her face and I love her personality and I love her brilliance and I think she’s perfect. I’m glad I get to grow old watching her and being absolutely fascinated.
Dr. Becky, your sense of excitement and adventure for our sky and astrophysics are absolutely infectious in the best way. Thanks for making astrophysics accessible and cool.
I am no physicist but I do like listening about stars and cosmos in general. So I can't wait for all the amazing pictures that will be released. 😊
Survey-Question (just go with it, please): Wouldnt oyu prefer it if we had Leaders who know the Internet but didnt embarass-themselves inside-it - or is that just me? I mean, we live in the Internet-Age and so much Data is available+understood.
It's not like Rain was understood by People 10000 Years ago:
For Example (and just an example!) Prisons.
I mean, we just know America's Prison-System is extremly primitiv. They know better and the USA could just copy them, but do Politicans even know that?? Do they ever watch 'Second Thought' lay out all the facts and Data about this or other stuff?
I just noticed that your on your way to 500,000 subscribers, I joined your journey when you had only 30,000 congratulations on your increasing popularity because of awesome content
That flip on the smbh is intriguing
Always enjoy your program. You are so enjoyable to listen to. Thanks for always bringing us awesome stuff!!!
I live in Florida and these monthly updates are so awesome for me. I go to work at 5:30 and I love picking the ones I can see out
Thank you for remembering the southern hemisphere! Yes, we should have a great view, if it wasn't always cloudy here in Auckland ....
I've seen the moon illusion with a traffic light. The utility crew in San Francisco had taken it down and put it next to the pedestrian crossing sign, and it looked twice as big as it does up high.
It's nice to see our work getting noticed by you guys! Thanks! 🙂
Wow. What a packed episode. (Glad I waited until after the launch of Boeing Starliner!). Great coverage!!
Love these. You remind me every month to look back to the sky, but more than that, your video reminds me of the wonders and beauty in the universe. A welcome sense of peace and a welcome reminder of beauty and inspiration in this uncertain world. May we all turn off the lights and remember to look up; to even for a moment remember our fragile place among the stars. Thank you.
Love your channel Dr. Becky!!
Great video! Love, like and subscription at the first sight - and little cute imperfections like the typo at 19:21 only make me love it more. Thanks! )
Headed to the Results section of the paper on supermassive black hole CL event and the first thing that cought my attention was a typo of the same kind - when one letter is missing, this time it was "montonically" instead of "monotonically". Spanish speakers may love the unintended pun =)
Very interesting Becky,I don't understand everything you say but it is still fascinating and food for thought
The MIRI update is incredible! That anything can work at 7 Kelvin is A-MAZE-ING!
Excellent review of space news. Thanks Becky.
You are the best to keep me informed.
4:59 Thanks Becky, now I got Moonlight Shadow by Mike Oldfied stuck in my head. Damn, I'm old. Thank you for another enthusiasm filled video :-) I love your bright an up-beat personality!
@18:02 “…black holes are where my heart truly lies…” gives one pause for thought, lol.
hey doc, long time subscriber.. would dearly love to see an entire episode of just the blooper. x
Very informative, thankyou miss beautiful Becky
My favourite astrophysicist, thanks for providing such valuable knowledge to us in such a lucid way
Dear Dr. Becky, you are a jewel in the firmament above! X
Thanks Dr. Becky!
Thx for making us smarter
Good episode, Dr. Becky. Interesting.
W🔵nderful Explanations Dr. Becky! Love your channel & information!!✴
Pretty exciting stuff, can't wait for more
I am currently studying for an honours degree in astronomy and planetary science and everytime i feel under pressure i watch one of your videos....your enthusiasm and enjoyment of astrophysics gives me such a massive boost....keep doing what you are doing cause I know that I am not the only one who benefits from what you do.
Galaxy Dr. Becky , let’s vote for this
Im so early, AHHHHHHHHHHHHH, love your vids btw I have been watching for literal years :D
Your obsession towards Astrophysics is sensational. Creativity, analysis, explanation, and your body language. Truly admirable.
Always informative
Just bought your book Dr. Becky. Going to read it on my vacation.
All the way from Canada,
G’day Dr. Becky,
Really enjoy your UA-cam Channel; we all look up to our night time skies and see so many bright objects and wonder how it all happened. I can and still do spend many night time hours looking up, then realizing I now have a sore neck and need to move my head slowly back down.
Books are really good, but then I came across your channel and “wow” an Astrophysicist that joins the dots (so to speak) and discusses our universe in a way that makes it even more fascinating. Your enthusiasm is infectious.
As I connect to the UA-cam channel (with my morning hot coco in hand) I look for your name on the left side and hope there is a blue dot which shows us you have taken the time to prepare a new informative video.
Thank you Dr. Becky
Kind Regards
Larry
I work in the early mornings now, so I miss my nightly walks looking at planets and constellations. Can't wait to see what Webb has to show us!
Thank you so much for your wonderful interesting videos! I love them!
You mention the possibility of a terrestrial moonshadow if locally dark enough. I met someone who wangled a journalism trip to Los Campanos observatory. He went to the washroom and coming back to the specific telescope he noticed his shadow on the ground. The ONLY feature in the sky was the centre of the milky way!! Amazing.
I just love your passionate enthusiasm. You need to be on SKY AT NIGHT our kid. Keep up the excellent work. 😎👍
A lot of info in this video...thanks...wonderful way of explain it...so beautiful english articulation💯😘👍✔
Hello Dr. Becky!
I am extremely impressed with how well you present the material, you're an excellent science educator, show is so well done (I work in television, so you KNOW I know what's good, right? lol)
Subscribed
Mars Guy does great coverage of Perseverence and Ingenuity mission
For those who forget you can get the eighth planet by looking at your feet!
You make sense Dr.👍
One can imagine the JWST people saying the phrase "fully operational battle station" :-) Having just spent last week getting first light on our next-generation FRB finding system on ASKAP (we saw Vela, which is like our guide star), I know the thrill of getting things working :-). And - go Becky, from one astronomer to another, you do an awesome service to science!
Your Enthusiasm is fantastic and I love the information you are presenting about the Universe. Quite Enlightening! 👍😉
Wonderful stuff!
You are so painfully adorable, your passion, your joy, your approachability in spite of your unquestionable expertise...
...but none as much as your rage at motorcycles...
Thank you. I enjoy your vlogs.
Good one. TY for vid
Another super interesting update. Likelikelikelike...........
I'm trying to imagine how much energy it would take to flip the magnetic field of a supermassive black hole. That accretion disk would be absolutely humongous, and changes in its structure would take a long time - hours - days, even if the magnetic field at the core somehow flipped suddenly. It boggles the mind.
I have the very same sense…like trying to flag down the Santa Fe Super Chief with a Zippo lighter. One has to be suspicious of the Big Bad Wolf of that neighborhood-> the black hole itself.
A lot of the particles and plasma in the accretion disc are going near the speed of light so that means due to relativistic effects every event should look slower to us observers outside of it. The magnetic flip happens quite fast though. Could it be because somehow a lot more ions or particles of opposite charge enter the accretion disc or the charge of ions changes to opposite but maintaining the same direction of orbit.
And how the charge even works when part of the field is inside the event horizon when you consider the flip.
Is the magnetic field created exclusively in the accretion disc or is it an internal feature of the black hole, ie beyond the Schwartzchild radius? Are we perhaps observing internal dynamics of the black hole?
wonderful as per
Dr Becky can you do a Day in the life of part 2 please.
Very cool thanks
Thanks Dr Smethurst
Once I was in Johns Canyon in SE Utah and the canyon ran North to South. The full moon was rising and watching the moon light descend down the Western cliff face was just so cool. I could not go to bed until the canyon floor was lit up. I was so bright once I was in the moon light. Talk about seeing moon shadows.
Survey-Question (just go with it, please): Wouldnt oyu prefer it if we had Leaders who know the Internet but didnt embarass-themselves inside-it - or is that just me? I mean, we live in the Internet-Age and so much Data is available+understood.

I mean, we just know America's Prison-System is extremly primitiv. That aint a theory or a wild guess, cause other Nations just do it blatantly better. They know better and the USA could just copy them, but do Politicans even know that?? Do they ever watch 'Second Thought' lay out all the facts and Data about this or other stuff?
Love the Amsterdam Mug! 🖖
I commute to work around 5AM. The early morning planetary display makes the drive more interesting.
Dr. Becky, you mentioned the moon illusion. Could you (have you?) explain(ed) how it works? I've heard too many theories to know which one is right. Love your work and enthusiasm!
The blood moon eclipse was great here in California. 🌙🥰
JWST is a game changing telescope. I can't believe the quality of the images.
Thank you Becky, that motorbike 🤣😂🤣
12:05 I have to say, Osiris Rex has got to be the most amazingly metal name for a space probe that I have ever heard of.
🤘🏻
It'll be Osiris Apex after it drops off the sample.
I don't know what NASA would rename it to if they go for the hat trick. I suppose the target will inform the new backronym.
@@duckrutt Osiris Apex is still pretty cool. But Osiris Rex straight up sounds like it could be the name of a song by Iron Maiden or Sabaton.
@@HerraTohtori There is a metalcore band called Born of Osiris and Iron Maiden have made several references to Osiris in titles and lyrics... so you're right on the mark with "the feel" of it.
"Osiris Rex" however, is an amalgamation of ancient Egyptian and Latin. Osiris is the name of a God, and Rex plainly means king. Which is kind of odd considering Osiris was (among a multitude of other things) the embodiment of the dead and resurrected king. So it becomes "King Dead-and-resurrected-king"
Yep, every time I hear Osiris-Rex I think of Mercyful Fate's "Egypt"!
