So here’s a story about bionicle. In the United States, bionicles came out in late June/early July in 2001. I was born June 27th 2001. I’ve always sort of shared a birthday with bionicle. Even though I was too young to play with the toys at the time they first came out, I did end up getting some of the glatorian sets. While I’ve always felt more of a connection with Hero Factory, bionicle and I grew up together, and those first two sets I got are what started me down the path I took. I think ultimately I owe my preference towards constraction sets to bionicle.

My very first Bionicle set I won when my family and I went to Six Flags. My Mom at the time was working for Big Y super market and they have special picnics and such at Six Flags. well during the picnic they also had special games that the kids could do and that's when I won the original Onua, the brand was new at the time and I was a big Lego kid so I was excited to say the least. in fact when they relaunched Bionicle in 2015 the first one of that series I bought was Onua.

My first one was hewkii mahri. I’m not sure if I spelled that right. I got him because I liked his axe and his disappointing gun. I was 6 when I saw it, but Bionicles were 7+. So my grandma took me The the toy store and we got him and she told me to forget I picked it out (which I didn’t). When I opened it I was super excited. I built him and had so many adventures, including Bionicles vsTransformers. When I got Gudunka, it took me about a week to make him. One day mom was picking me up from school with him all done, and I was the happiest kid in the world.

My first BIONICLE was Bohrock Gahlok! My family was at the YMCA with the local homeschool group for swimming lessons, and one of my friends pulled me over to the side. He had apparently heard that my birthday happened a couple months ago, and wanted to give it to me as a present! Me never even hearing of or seeing a BIONICLE set before, I was hooked! I looked over every little feature, every mechanic, every detail!
I really wish I could remember my friend's name. I haven't seen them since we were 8 years old, 16 years ago! Really sad when you think back to close friends and realize you've forgotten something so significant about them!

So, fun fact. My very first bionicle set was Vezon and Fenrakk. I don't exactly remember how old I was when I got it... I think six... But yeah. I got my first set, and it was a titan. Hell, I don't even remember asking my mom for it, but I remember getting it. Gosh, that was cool. And that was how I fell in love with bionicle. Sadly, I never got any of the original Toa. I had a few Inika, Visorak, Barraki, Phantoka and Mistika... Glatorian of course. God that's so nastolgic.
Anyhow, thanks for hearing my Ted Talk.

First bionicle sets I got were Tahu and Lewa mata since I got them at the same time for Christmas. Huh... I got red and green for christmas... what a coincidence...

I don't remember what I began with, but it was for sure a pair Toa Mata. I found out bionicle thanks to a childhood friend, and my mother bought one for me and one for my brother. I have all 6, and I've always liked the Kopaka design, with his robot eye and his sword and shield combination. As a matter of fact, I believe I have all Bionicle with asymetric masks up to Phantoka (even though I'm probably missing some asymetric titan mask).
Other Bionicles that have a special place in my heart must be Makuta Teridax, Keetongu, Nivawk, Thok, Mata Pohatu, the big Axalara ship and mostly gunner-shaped sets (not sets with guns. Sets designed to look like their only purpose is shooting. Metru Vakama, Inika Nuparu, Phantoka Kopaka)
On another note, I love the design of Bohroks. It had a little catapult, headbutts and could roll in a ball. No other bionicle can do that

I remembe when Bionicle first came out. I liked Lego, and not much else, no video games, no action figures, none of that. It was Lego and books. So when I saw the Bionicles, I thought, "these look like action figures. I don't like action figures, so I don't know if I want these." however I got one set, just to try it out, see if I really didn't like them (it was Lego after all, I had to try it out). Anyway, first set was Onua. I remember putting him together and thinking, "okay, not so bad." I'm not sure what happened next (I was under 6 y.o. at the time), but next thing I knew, I had at least two of all the Toa Mata, had built the two combined figures, and was looking forward to getting the Bohrok. Bionicle quickly became my favorite Lego theme, even more so than Star Wars.
I was excited when the Toa Metru came out, simply because THEY COULD BEND THEIR LEGS AT THE KNEE!
I had that original Takanuva set. I still have him intact in a bin, sans his weapon, and I still have the vehicle somewhat intact as well (I used it for some other stuff). I was excited to see him in the Mistika wave as well, and that Titan version of him is still hanging around.
Ayy.... I got Nidikhi and Kreka for x-mas too. :D
I was soooooo jealous of my brother, who got ALL THREE of the Barraki Titan sets......
The one thing I didn't like about Keetongu (and the other titan sets in that era) was a lack of a distinct hand. For some reason that bothered me. Still loved the set though.
Nice top ten, I'd be down to see more stuff like this.

My first bionicle set was actually the green and red rahkshi for Christmas. I dont even remember what else I got that year but they were awesome! But I really only got into bionicle from the metru nui storyline onward. Best years for me were 2006 and 2007 those were the best!!!!

Kardas Dragon was my favorite to. I never counted it as a set cause I always classified it as a combo model. But it did sell as a set so yeah. I ended up using the wing design on my MOC Archimedes. That's how much I loved those wings. They were geniusly designed.
Great count down Ben. :D Thanks for the stories. I only have a couple of neat stories like that. Most of my Bionicle buying was me saving money up from lunch money or mowing lawns and going to my Toys R Us and buying them.

i hope you make more top 10 videos cause these r amazing to listen to while moccing or just chilling at night. Since i dont really have friends who like bionicle il just tell a cool little story here.
One of my first memories as a human was actually playing with bionicles. It was back in 2011 i was sitting in a restaurant and i was playing with a “furno” however it was actually malum with bionicle and herofactory parts on it. It had a malum head and a first gen hero factory torso along with inika arms and legs with no armour. I loved him and i changed his torso sometimes later with the phantom one with the ribs thatopen up. I think my mom or dad bought some second hand from someone along with a gali nuva.
I think my first bionicle that was intact is gali nuva and she started it all for me. Another one of my memories was back in 2013 i was at this american outlet and im canadian. Gali having a canister was the coolest thing ever i thought cause i could bring her out to play with when my mom went shopping and put her back in her canister without being scared if loosing parts and i out the canister in my sister’s stroller safe from anyone.
Sometimes i feel like i was born in the wrong generation because i missed all the cool toys like bionicle, old starwars, and lego being cheap.
Anyways the few bionicle sets i bought from the store was G2 sets which was both lewas and the jungle protector. I kept both of them the way lego made them until 2 years ago when i swapped alot of parts to make them look better. After realizing how fun bionicles are i went ahead and got my parents to buy me so many bionicles for christmas and throughout the school year. It was and still is an amazing experience.
After i got that many parts i instantly had enough pieces to build a self moc and he has a completely custom body and it had both ccbs and the bionicle building system parts and i love him. He had a mata onua mask and i think he represents me in my teenage years. I also had a custom mcdonalds matoran with a silver kopaka mata mask and i have a fully bionicle building system self moc as me if i was a bounty hunter and he is a very generic inika build but i really like him. Lastly i have a full ccbs
self moc as how i think i would be when i was old if i was in bionicle and i think it is time for a revamp for him.
My favourite thing about bionicles/lego is that when you feel like you have nothing to do you can just open your bin with bionicle parts and go ham on building. I still need to organize my ccbs parts. I also love mixing ccbs and the bionicle building system and you can take advantage of how smooth ccbs looks and how “messy” the bionicle building system looks. Saying that gives me a moc i idea. I think i am going to try to build something that is half ccbs and half bionicle.
This month i revamped 2016 lewa with alot of inspiration from LOF and he looks amazing imo. Nonetheless i am still very much into bionicle and i am still trying to get more. I think some things i should try to get more is technic parts so i could make even better mocs.
Also your parents sound like the coolest parents ever.
If anyone read till here thankyou haha and feel free to idk comment smth.
Also does anyone feel like bionicle might be coming back because lego posted something abt bionicle twice on twitter AND bionicle won the 90th contest AND it is bionicles 20th yr anniversary.
Next year feels promising for bionicles. I feel like they should redo the inika building system and make the joints much stronger and even cooler be able to incorporate ccbs with them. If not lego needs a constraction theme as constraction pieces r getting expensive

My first set was Vohtarak. I got it for Christmas back in 05 from my grandma. I loved what few sets I got in 05+06 a ton, but it wasn't until 07 that I really got into Bionicle and the story. I remember being super excited when I first saw the Barraki, seeing that excellent trailer for them really pulled me into the world and story. I think I got Carapar and Kalmah for my eighth birthday, haha.

My first bionicle was technically my brother's but he didn't really use them so I did, it was a bag of krekka parts and the blue vaki parts second hand of course but I had a great time building my own characters
Recently I finished krekka almost completely as he would have come in box but I'm missing three pieces still

I love that you also shared the stories of how these Bionicle's became your favorite! It brings me back to some of my favorite memories myself, like getting my first Tahu at a gas station with my dad, and so on.
I suppose my top 10 would be Nuparu Inika, Hydraxon, Dekar, Lhikan, Green Rahkshi, Tahu, Whenua Metru, Vezok, and Axonn and Brutaka. No order yet, and I don't even have Lhikan yet! But he's the one I've always always wanted, and loved looking at in the catalogue.

My first bionicle wasn't one it was actually two. It was christmas and my parents gave me a present right? I opened it and in it was two canisters. One with a black lid and one with a green one. It was Onua and Lewa Nuva. My first ever bionicle. And I remember very well how Lewa just grasp my attention instantly. Something about the mask and those swords. Still to this day his design just amazes me. I kept in through my entire childhood (with some other bionicle of course) And as I grew older I put the bionicle I liked the most in a box in our boxroom. Sadly I wasn't allowed to keep all of them so difficult decisions had to be made that day. But I kept Lewa and others and a few weeks ago I was gonna go pick them up. Only to realsie the box was no longer there. My parents think they might have tossed it out by accident. So sadly my first Bionicle is gone.. Now living on with My Toa Mata, Turagas and matorans.

Look out! It's a giant comment!
1:49 I remember the set numbers to Star Wars sets that are important to me. Like 7171 Mos Espa Podrace, 10030, UCS Imperial Star Destroyer, 10123 Cloud City, 10144 and 10143 go back and forth, one is the UCS Death Star II the other the original Sandcrawler, 7190 Millenium Falcon, however, those are pretty easy in my opinion because there are patterns in the earlier sets and UCS and higher end sets always stated with a 10XXX. I need to remember Ewok Village because that is in the top three with 7171 and 10030 of my favorite sets. (Just looked it up, it's 10236, which shouldn't be too hard to remember because it's 102 2x3=6)
2:23 Maybe it's because I'm an only child, but I don't remember you mentioning a brother before so I was under this impression that you were also an only child. I don't know what makes you appear to be an only child, maybe it's because you help on to all the LEGO, but just never crossed my mind that you would have had a brother.
8:47 So I don't think Takanuva quite lives up to the hype. A counter offer would be to not have the yellow version of that one ship and make an alternate version of Takanuva with the gold pieces because I remember seeing in the comic that he gets cured of the shadow toxin and the gunmetal pieces turned gold and I kept thinking how cool that would have been for the Bionicle community if Takanuva had been able to be made this size in his proper colors.
13:02 Dude, food always got in the way of building all my new sets on Christmas and the day after when we went to buy stuff with all the money sent in from family. My parents are like, "You've been on the floor for hours building, you need to take a break," and I'm like, "But I'm not dooooooone. (Rorschach voice) They must be built..."
15:00 Dave voices Embo and he gives himself a pet wolf, sigh... Alright, I'll allow it. I feel bad for that Anooba though, because his big central tooth is missing, it's like declawing a cat, he needs that thing to be a competent hunter!
17:33 Axonn: Am I a joke to you?
19:50 Hey, I actually own one of the McToran. I own Huki. The first and only Bionicle Set I had until 2003 when my step-cousin gave me Panrahk. I was afraid my mom wouldn't let me keep Panrahk because I wasn't allowed to have Bionicle at the time, and he was one of the bad guys, but I guess my mom forgot or just let me have it because it was Christmas. My dad didn't know anything about me not being allowed to have Bionicle apparently until I told him a few weeks ago and he said he would have fought for me on that. I can't help but think of the cracked mirror universe where I would have had Bionicle sets alongside the Star Wars ones. I could have been a real Bio-MOCist and not just some sham wiggling their way into the Bio-Cup! But Huki was always okay. He lived in the back pocket of the seat cover in the car, so I remember playing with him a lot on the way to and from school.
21:22 It blows my mind that yellow is your favorite color. I just don't get it. Is it because minifigs are yellow? Because then I'd get it, but just arbitrarily liking yellow the most out of all the colors, I don't get.
25:13 That's why I wanted the UCS Imperial Star Destroyer. It was the Largest LEGO Set ever! And it was for a good time, too, and then it got usurped, but that Star Destroyer still was there in my mind. I want _that one_ and I don't care if it has been dethroned, it's the largest set to me (even if I did also get the Death Star II and it is bigger). Still, a 3 ft long set, it's not a bad looking model! Still want that Super Star Destroyer though because that's my favorite ship in Star Wars. It's the most impressive thing in Empire Strikes Back as it casts the shadow across multiple regular Star Destroyers, and it makes a great fireball in Return of the Jedi. Death Stars don't count as ships in my world I guess because I will still always see the Super Star Destroyer as the largest ship. And sure, the Supremacy exists now, too, but I don't care, the Super Star Destroyer is the king in my eye.
Nice list, Ben. Now it's time to list your favorite Star Wars sets. Give me the chance to make an even larger comment. Chances are, if you own it, I own it, and if I don't there's a reason why and I'll tell you why -you're wrong to own whatever set- I don't. XD

Lol Yellow is indeed my favourite colour because minifigs are yellow yes :P These days I go back and forth on favourite colours though. Most of the time it's whatever colour I'm currently using in a MOC

Jeez there's so many sets I don't think I'd be able to pick just 10! Let alone a #1! Lerahk was my first set, but I wasn't old enough to build it correctly! My first set I was able to sit down and understand what to do was Vakama Hordika, so that one has a spot in my heart. Pridak is might be my number 1 though.

My older brother got into them first with the first wave and they had to be some of the coolest toys ever, we collected those first few waves religiously. We only got a few sets from the rest of the waves in the years after, but I always kept up with the story through the Lego magazine and the bionicle website. Such an amazing mix of cool toys and story's/games/videos/comics/movies that doesn't really compare to any other toy line in my opinion

for my first Bionicle set, I believe that would be either Kalmah or Ehlek I think it was Ehlek because I remember breaking his Lime green parts, and having to buy a new one everytime I did (this happened 2 more times after that first one because I own 3 Ehlek heads and a bunch of those Green Spike pieces), I think I got Kalmah second then Takadox, then Mantax, then Carapar and finally Pridak who for some reason was the rarest of them at the places I went to to get them. I also fondly remember wanting Nocturn really badly so I'd make him from all the Barraki combined, I finally got him last year (2022 as of writing this).
    as for my top 10:
    10: Lewa Mata
Lewa is my favourite Toa from the original six, and 22 years later he still holds up
    9: Gadunka
My first Titan set, I could have bought Maxilos and Spinax instead, but I bought Gadunka (along with these green and blue squids that I thought were so cool) because who wouldn't pick the big glow in the dark crab monster with a giant teeth filled mouth that you could open and close, really a little kid's biggest dream.
    8: Lewa Phantoka
just the best looking version of Lewa in my opinion, I got this one more recently as oposed to when it came out and he looks really good next to Antroz.
    7: Keetongu
I actually got Keetongu for free, one of my neighbors had this and threw it off his balcony and I (by some miracle) managed to catch it, so by his rules it was mine now. very good set but probably biased due to the great story I got out of it.
    6: Toa Iruni
My favourite 2005 set, all the Toa metru parts in dark green here are stunning and this gold Mask, shield and Bohrok Shield piece are fantastic
    5: Vultraz
A set I did not know existed until my parents randomly got it for me, and I have loved it ever since it's not the best of the vehicle sets (That honor goes to the axelara) but it's my favourite as it kinda reminds me of a droid speeder from Star Wars the Clone Wars, also the Vultraz Shadow Matoran in this set has a cool mask that I later learned first belonged to Makuta Icarax, so that's nice.
    4: Mutran and Vican
Sadly I don't have a complete Mutran and Vican, only parts of Mutran (luckily I do have his Mask), but a green version of Chirox sign me up!, I hope to someday own the full set.
    3: Makuta Antroz
Like Vultraz Antroz looks just so cool, he's the best of the six 2008 Makuta (though Gorast and Krika come close) he's the most basic out of all the 2008 Makuta but he makes up for that with his mask.
    2: Ehlek
As my little story above may suggest I have a really strong connection to Ehlek, I have been extra careful with that third Ehlek I bought who's still in great condition as we speak (in 2023) and I will not let anything happen that could break him (I hope).
    1: Nocturn
And finally Nocturn the colours here look amazing the glow in the dark Takadox blue mixes so well with the lime green, a flawless set, nothing I say would do Nocturn justice, and I bought it sealed (worth every cent I payed) so I have kept the box, a thing that child me to my regret did not do with the canisters (god I miss my Ehlek canisters).

i like tenders more than nuggets, because nuggets are made of the unwanted stuff from chicken

Victor Vu that’s not necessarily true. More often than not, chicken nuggets are just made from unused scraps.

Does anybody know if there were mocs with Exo Force fingers on before Hydraxon? I know it blew my mind as a kid, but Exo-Force came out in 2006, a whole year before Hydraxon. So HYPOTHETICALLY, someone else could have done it in copper or silver or gold first!

Like I said in the video, this was a G1 Top 10. I loved G2 and I'll probably do a video on my favs for them too.
