Ah yeah! We talked a bit about my collecting origins, coin wise, definitely the SBA and Eisenhower Dollars were an early influence, and the SBA debuted the year I was born. My best item in my collection currently is likely my $5 Hawaii Overprint, however my favorite pieces are a few Philippines notes given to me from a former coworker. I choose them as my favorite not only as they are really cool notes, but they were given simply because she knew that I would appreciate them as a collector.
Coincidentally, one of the notes that I had set aside for you happens to be a Tombstone note, but I mainly set it aside because it was a 2021 in excellent shape from before you had a 2021.
Remembering back to my early days of collecting, I knew about keeping notes in sleeves, but they weren't sold in hobby sections near me, but baseball card sleeves were abundant. I remember making my own sleeves by slipping one end of the note into a sleeve, then covering the other end with another sleeve that I would pre-cut to size and make flaps on, and then tape them together in the middle (no tape ever touched a note).

Hey brother. SBA's huh. I never saw those growing up. Exceptional minted coins that I recall in the past were "Bicentennial Quarters".
The $5 Hawaii overprint is a nice note to have. Creating your own currency sleeves is pretty innovative. That was a brilliant idea to preserve the integrity of your notes.
The Philippines Notes are interesting. That was very nice of that woman to just give them to you.
Thanks for your continued support of the channel brother...

Funny what got me into collecting money was coins and I was very young, I think I know its was in the late 80s I was a teenager and my parents gave me bus money for me and my sister, in the change was a Susan B Anthony Dollar and I never seen those before so I didn`t want to spend it so I made me and my sister walk two miles back to the house from school, and yes she was NOT HAPPY. I start collecting currency after I graduated high school in 19995 (17yrs old) because coins started getting little boring so I started with U.S. small size notes and venture into large size notes with the help of coin dealers and privates collectors. Now I`m 48 been collecting little over 30yrs and its been a fun wild journey, enough for a museum. Side note I have foreign coins, notes U.S. Bank checks, food stamps, postage stamps anything related to money and the date range with the whole collection 1600s to current .

Haaaaaaa. What an introduction into the hobby. I wonder if your sister told your parents about the unplanned journey home😅😊😅.
Sounds as if you have an expansive collection.
Thanks for your continued support of the channel and for sharing your story. Look forward to speaking with you again.

Back around 1958, when I was 12, I was poking around the cash register in my dad’s drugstore and found in a back corner a 1901 O Barber Quarter. That got me started. Soon after, when I was 14 and working there after school, someone spent five with seven sevens and a zero serial number. Guess where that went.

It's amazing that you had enough where, with all to read/ check serial numbers way back then.
Did your Dad talk to you at all about numismatics, or were you self educated about the hobby?

@@legaltender1980 The serial number just stood out. As for coins, it was just natural curiosity, as I noticed an occasional Indian head in pennies from when I was even younger.

I've seen some other channels speak about Goldbacks, along with yourself. I might look into them. I love numismatics, but I don't want to saturate my collection with items I'm not truly in love with. I am opening my self up as a whole regarding numismatics pieces. Let's just say I'll keep an open mind about adding Goldbacks to the collection. Maybe if I read their origin story, and it's interesting.
I do want some precious metals though. Gold bars particularly. From what I've seen. Those pieces are surprisingly small.
Thanks for supporting the channel brother. More episodes to come.😅😊😅...

@@legaltender1980 you'll love the GOLDBACK story it's apart of history I can't wait to see you break down the evolution of USA numismatics and I hope that you'll have the goldbacks too...
I'm a firm believer in doing what you like id hate to mislead you... I respect it's your collection promise. I'll put a goldback in the envelope I have for you though.
Be careful where you buy your gold from though I suggest you start at a local coin shop lots of foreign scammers out there.

Mann if you stayed close I have extra notes especially now because I been going through my currency and cleaning it up making it look more professional. I have 5 large binders I am going through and man its work. I said to myself with prices today I couldn`t afford to purchase a lot of this stuff today. LOL best investment I made as a child just for being a collector not a stacker. Forgot got military notes from the U.S. and certain countries especially WW2

    • @legaltender1980
      @legaltender1980  3 місяці тому

You are so right. Prices have gone up considerably depending on the numismatic piece. Maybe it's due to new found interest in the hobby, or just general inflation in today's current economy.
I'm leaning more into exotic, or more interesting numismatic pieces, military notes, some coins and foreign currency. I can't wait to share my recent additions.
Stay tuned to Legal Tender Tuesday and Fast Money Friday 💰 🤑 💸...
