  • Beethoven Appassionata: A Torrent of Expressive Emotion
    Mvt 1 : 00:00
    Mvt 2 : 10:35
    Mvt 3 : 16:41
Beethoven is one of the most renowned composers to have ever lived and within his sheer volume of work, a handful of pieces serve to at least partially define the depths of this composer. One example is certainly the famous Beethoven Appassionata. Full of sound and raw emotional fury, I vacillate between the sublime and the carnal; as if the composer himself is speaking to me through the tones of the keys and the ominous dynamics featured throughout. While I experience a sensation of majesty within the undertones, there is undoubtedly a sense of anger throughout the piece and this serves to highlight how Beethoven himself was interpreting this portion of his life.
In order to fully appreciate the Beethoven Appassionata, I found that it was first necessary to delve into the emotional bowels of the composer himself. Beethoven was a man of extremes. Known for fits of rage and a proclivity to fall passionately in love, these very same characteristics were perhaps best suited to be translated into a musical score. However, I believe that it is most important to recognise that this piece was written when he had learned of the severity of his deteriorating hearing loss. As a pianist, I can only imagine what he must have been feeling after such an utter condemnation. Akin to a painter who loses his sight, this is arguably the cruellest curse for a composer; the inability to experience his own creations.
While all three of his movements vary in terms of tempo and melody, I quickly learned that there are a handful of themes which can be seen throughout the piece as a while. As contemporary Austrian pianist Carl Czerny pointed out, it seems as if the Beethoven Appassionata represented “ocean waves on a stormy night”. This could very well be an allusion to the sense of loneliness that Beethoven must have felt when he first learned about his irreversible hearing condition. Indeed, I can hear angered and yet silent cries within many of the notes that he chose to use.
According to Czerny, Beethoven himself fully recognised that the Appassionata was his must emotionally demanding piece; second only to the subsequent Hammerklavier. I also feel that the reason why so much emotion is achieved is through the use of two lyrically related themes as opposed to ones which markedly contrast with one another (a common practice during this time). As a result, we are immersed within clearly defined moods which compliment one another and allow his raw emotions to resonate even more with the listener. I experience a medley of emotions within this piece. Fury, angst, unrequited love and an unquenched sense of desire are all tones which constantly repeat throughout the three movements. The Appassionata reflects a duality in Beethoven; a desire to love and be loved while at the same time realising that ultimately, such emotions may cause more pain than pleasure.

At a time, at least in American culture, where so many disregard the classics, and rely on their image and viral stunts to become famous "artists" without much sacrifice, seeing something like this is truly rare and surprising. Seeing such a beautiful young woman, playing all the classics with such artistry and technical proficiency, knowing the countless hours, days, months and years she must have struggled in solitude somehow gives me great hope for the future. Thank you Anastasia for devoting so much of your life to the sharing of the beauty of these timeless pieces with the world. You are one of my heroes.

It's a divine pleasure to listen and watch You play this piece. You are just so in touch with the mood of Beethoven, and - wow- You are gorgeous in your emotional and artisitc totality. Your beaty is simply overwhelming. And playing with such ease, although, as a pianist myself, I know the long hours of training behind that. Thanks for making a video like this.

What an immensely beautiful interpretation!!! One of the most beautiful I've ever heard (have about thirty renditions of Appassionata in my modest home collection, not to mention many others I've enjoyed).
For the people who don't like camera in this video (as we can read in some of the comments below), also for those who might be distracted by Anastasia's feminine beauty (and she is breathtaking indeed): close your eyes. Don't watch, just listen to the music. Music speaks by itself and needs no other resources.

Enthralling! The editing of the camera work only enhances the magnificence of the performance by entwining the dazzling fingering with the emotional intensity each phrasing impacts on the performer. This video meant very much to me: my favorite song for the piano (esp. mvt.3) and the best performance I've ever heard of it, especially the 3'rd movement, played fast and aggressively, and especially the end, played extra fast (Presto, as it is actually marked), just the way I like to play it (except without all the mistakes I make). You really brought the song to life, this is one where the right performance turns it from a just a song to a priceless masterpiece and beyond, and you've done just that. I'll always be beaten up by parts like, for example, the left hand part from 17:32-17:42, or the fast jumping the left hand has to do throughout the piece, or playing the runs of parallel 3'rds cleanly when I try to play this piece the way I want, so I'm extremely grateful that you made this video so I can at least hear the song played the way I think it is meant to be played. I really hope, as you said, that you stay motivated!

To all these insightful comments of appreciation , surely 4 more words can be added: they are "Daring", Empathy", "Beauty", and "Bravery"... especially considering that the videorecording was made early one morning, like 6a.m. early ( i read)... and under a bright and possibly quite hot light. ❤
So, Beauty, Bravery, Devotion to a cause, Professionalism.., Empathy.... Endless list of positive descriptive words.
❤ Thank you, Anastasia, for being the mediator here for us, and for this wonderful exploration you have made of the Appassionata Sonata. One experiences more and wonderful insights each time one plays this unique video of yours. 🎉🎉🎉🎉❤ So , many thank yous to you...

Extraordinarily well done! The culmination of a lot of hard work topped with the passion that the composer would have expected. I’ve heard Appassionata performed by numerous artists. The heart of Anastasia does it the most justice of all by far!

Great rendition. I have the impression that you are holding back in sections to ‘not make the piece too violent’. IMHO I would like to hear more of the fire in this piece giving more bite to its true impact. I love the parts where the technical difficulties seem to capture your full attention and you (forget) to make it ‘nice’ and let it really sings as I fell it should. Perhaps this is all an old man’s dream (I’m 84) but I wanted too pass this on to you as a consideration for your future performances. Love your work.
