  • Beethoven Moonlight Sonata (actually the Piano Sonata no 14 in C-sharp minor "Quasi una fantasia", Op. 27, No. 2 by Ludwig van Beethoven) is one of the famous classical piano works in the world. Completed was Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven in 1801 and dedicated in 1802 to his pupil, Countess Giulietta Guicciardi."The change that has taken place in me now is caused by a sweet, wonderful girl who loves me and is loved by me." - wrote Beethoven.
Moonlight Sonata was published in Bonn, although from the first months of 1802 Juliet had a clear preference for the composer Wenzel Galenberg and, as a result, married him. Six months after writing the sonata, October 6, 1802, Beethoven wrote desperately "Heiligenstadt testament." Some Beethoven scholars believe that it was to the Countess Guicciardi that the composer addressed a letter, known as a letter "to an immortal lover." It was discovered after the death of Beethoven in the secret drawer of his wardrobe. Beethoven kept a miniature portrait of Juliet along with this letter and "Heiligenstadt testament."
Moonlight Sonata is one of Beethoven's most popular compositions for the piano.
Technically known as Piano Sonata No. 14 in C# Minor, Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata is arguably one of the most beautiful pieces for piano ever written. It is actually interesting to mention that this piece was originally called sonata quasi una fantasia… which roughly translates to “sonata in the manner of a fantasy”. It was not until the year 1834 when a poet would ascribe it the name that we have come to know and grown to love. Even those who are not fans of classical music are well aware of the opening melody that has come to define the first movement. And it is for this reason that many consider the piece to arguably represent the most well-known work created by such a prolific composer. As a pianist… I naturally wanted to capture the emotions that Beethoven must have been experiencing. However, I also desired to convey the sonorous beauty associated with this work for modern viewers and for my fans in general.
My Journey with Beethoven: From the Solemn to the Impetuous Storm
The first movement of Moonlight Sonata is dominated by a slow and almost yearning rhythm; as if Beethoven himself were in a state of lamentation. As I played this adagio sostenuto, I soon began to realise that there are some human emotions which are best put into musical form. There is simply no way that words could describe what can only be called a mournful state of beauty. As if I were walking with Beethoven himself underneath the pallid moonlight… I felt completely swept away in a sense of forlorn sorrow and yet, I could not help but to be captivated by this state of sublime rapture. These emotions would soon be replaced by a sense of personal transition which accompanied the second movement and finally, by the extremely turbulent nature associated with the third (presto agitato) section. I felt as if I were being swept off of my emotional feet into a state of ethereal agitation. There was a sense of tempestuous yearning and the frenetic tempo only served to heighten my senses until they hovered somewhere between uncertainty and magnificent bliss... Read more:

I am an old guy but I remember my mother playing this often. She would often be overwhelmed by the task of raising 6 children on Dad's very low salary. Some times she would drop everything and go to the piano, and play this. I realize now that the fast parts expressed her frustration with all she had to do, and when the slow portion came an expression of peace came over her face. I know it saved her sanity. Unfortunately she was woren out at a young age dying at age 52. Regretfully, I was too dense to realize all that she did for us. God rest her soul!

Hey old guy! I’m right up there with you! One thing I have learned and experienced about music - particularly classical music is that listening intently or even casually heals the souls of those who listen. May the remainder of your life be healed by it! Blessings!

Now imagine that Beethoven had a blank piece of paper in front of him when he wrote this. Just a feeling inside him. And put THAT on a piece of paper. That's pure genius. Imagine writing THAT. Excellent performance though, I just got lost in the creation. Lost in the "chase" he obviously imagined. Tears. :)

I had the privilege of going to a concert pianist's home for a social visit. He lived out on Cape Cod. It was a calm summer evening with the windows open and a slight breeze. He played Moonlight Sonata on a Steinway grand piano with the sound of the breeze through the tall grass on the beach and the soft sounds of the ocean waves in the distance. It is something I will never forget.

    Two questions:
How can an earthly person write such music?
How can an earthly person perform so wonderfully?
I know, there's a lot to do with talent, practice and sheer hard work, but even so... respect!

I am floored by Anastasia. She is brilliant in every tempo. The hyperactive director of this video came close to ruining her 3rd movement because whatever substance he was on caused him to think it wasn't exciting enough to watch
this genious perform with the speed and precision and athletic piano pounding Beethoven demands here. So, as beautiful and exciting as Ms. Huppman is to watch, try just playing the sonata with headphones on and close your eyes, or write as you listen, as I just did.
    Bravo!

Then I stoped to play and study piano because of the university. Now I´m 58 and I´m a phsycologist that love my work. But, I love piano too. And today I´m not able to read a partiture again. So SAD. I´d really love to play piano again. I think it´s still time to do it!!! Anastasia, you are great!!!

Hi Lilian. I started learning from scratch nearly 9 years ago in 2011 when I was 48. The piano has brought so much joy and happiness into my life that I don't consider ever giving up. Well, my neighbours might disagree here!
Even if as an adult one cannot learn or memorize the way children do, to me it has paid off. Definitely. I encourage you to take it up again. I think having started to play and study as a child makes you much more likely to be able to catch up, get your skills back and enjoy the piano again in less time than it would take someone who starts like I did. By the way, I studied psychology, too, but now I work as a teacher.

You have such a sympathy for Beethoven Anastasia. Like silvery moonlight on the surface of a tremulous lake the music has a hypnotic beauty. We gradually move through the disturbance of gentle breezes to, by the third, a tempestuous and storming finale. Beautifully played and interpreted.

One of the most emotional renditions I have heard of this wonderful piece of music. I can almost feel Beethoven's tears for his unrequited love in the first movement. Thank you so much Anastasia for sharing this with us freely, you are a generous person as well as an amazing musician..

The emotion and passion and feeling you put into this Beethoven classic makes it seem new again although I’ve heard-and enjoyed it-many times. Thank you for sharing your remarkable gift with us. ❤️

    Excellent performance!
I first heard this piece as a kid in grade school some 60+ years ago. I have always thought the first movement a bit much, I guess it's the 'Moonlight' part. The moonlight is gone, however, with the 2nd and 3rd movements. Perhaps these upbeat movements introduce the always promising dawn of a new day; Vigor, excitement, interest, challenge!

BRAVO!!!! OUTSTANDING !! Definitely this has been the best perfomance of the Sonata 14 I have ever heard in my life. Ludwig, watching your performance up from the heaven, must certainly be proud of you. You are yourself "Quasi una fantasia" in the most beautiful lyric sense. Thank you so much for the post.

I was a boy and remember my father playing this the evening after work. My father was a self piano studying so only the first two parts are in the his capacity. But the love of the music was his very force and I lost in the melody of the piano was happy and grateful of that
