- Now that we've completed the class based magic item lists, it's time to tackle something new! Seeing as how I didn't do any legendary items for those lists, I figured it would be a nice change of pace. So I present to you my Top 10 Legendary Magic Items. They're not in any specific order, but I do thing they increase in "coolness" as the list goes on.

@@MarcoGarcia-lg5tl that would make sense, but I mean, either way if you reverse the spell and it doesn't do damage to them, it still won't do damage to you, and you've then successfully Burned one of their spell slots and effectively slapped them in the face with a wet noodle so it's still a win win in my eyes
I'd house rule it so that the robe of the archmagi changes color depending on the character's alignment.
Which it did in 1st. But then! Dada da, it reveals it's colour and wrecks you if you aren't the right alignment! Why? Because Gygax says fuck you players that's why. lol
@@ourkeving Now a days I dont really think anyone gives a shit about alignment in the same level. I mean sure if your robe is coal black there might be a few concerns from fellow party members but overall I doubt most people would even be aware of a legendary items effects anyhow.

I'd house rule that the robes' colors can change to whatever the archmagus wants with their own Prestidigitation. Why would an archmagus limit themselves to white, gray, and black? The same blokes who invented Chromatic Orb, Prismatic Spray, and Color Spray? Come now, Stardust, a wizard without a little razzledazzle isn't living life to its fullest.

For the armor of invulnerability, I’d like to point out that a tarasque’s attacks aren’t magical.
Also, for black staff: Make a Wizard villain who took the school of enchantment, the arcanist feat, and black staff. Essentially free, twinned, power word kill, or psychic scream, or dominate monster.

I agree. Dragons are magical creatures, and on my table, the dragon's breath weapon is a magical effect. Players have never - in 40 years of me DM'ing - ever complained about this.
@@the1uppers998 yes the heat Should vaporize the blood at minimum...unless the fire itself is magical. After it hits, the residual fire is mundane.
oooh a warforged with the powerarmor. with the whole lore about them intergrating their self with the armor i feel like itd be interesting to rp an Ai in the suit talking to the warforged
John black don’t warforged have access to another ai they can integrate as well? Would be a fun concept with two AI’s connected to the third :D

@@diazinth Not AIs (well, one of them was), but the three linked minds sharing an augmented body thing reminds me of Sym-Bionic Titan. That show was dope, too bad they weren't able to get a toy license and got cancelled

In one game session where we were high level my GM gave me the armor of invulnerability, and in the distance we saw a town getting attacked by demons and we wouldn't get there in time to save it so I activated my armors invulnerability told the wizard to teleport to me and jumped down the mountain taking zero damage in the process allowing us to buff up are monk so he could speed demon the rest of the way there allowing us to save a great number of people in the process
Now that's what I call an entrance
Would be really interesting to do a worst magic items like items where the curse outweighs the benefits or items that are should be lower level items.
Added to the list!
Shield of Attraction and anything regarding Lycanthropy are the only ones I can think of that might go on such a list.

thejesteramongfools I feel like they just wrote that in cause they couldn’t be bothered to go back and errata magic items to allow artificers to attune to them :P
@@varasatoshi3961 Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the thief archetype rogue also get an ability which allows it to attune to any magic item?
@@jefferyoneill1 Yes. Thief archetype gets Use Magic Device at 13th level. One level before Arti gets Magic Item Savant.
Jeffery O'Neill as mentioned in prior comments, yes, but there’s a lot of class restricted items that would be amazing for artificers that can’t be used because of the class restrictions never mentioning artificers. It was both flavorful and a sly way to not have to go back and errata a shit load of times to say “also by Artificer”
To be fair there is an argument to be made that while attunement restrictions don't apply stuff like "must have 17 levels in Paladin to get this extra benefit" do. Most of these items are still pretty good without that but there are some that can screw you over.
Edit: Also, alignment requirements still apply.
So I would have the robes of the archmagi change colors based on your alignment rather than the robes requiring you to have a particular alignment

IE:
Celestial (Zealot barb, celestial warlock, divine soul sorcerer, etc)
Damage mitigation/support (Ancestral guardian barb, cavalier/banneret fighter, etc)
Darkness (Shadow monk, shadow magic sorcerer, gloom stalker ranger), Elemental (Tempest cleric, storm/draconic sorcerer, evocation wizard, circle of the land druid, elemental monk)

The spells on Harizawn don’t require saves. They just let you see and know things.
Doesn't Detect Thoughts have the option to read deeper into their mind that forces a save?

16:30 our dm gave this to our crazy string barbarian and the effect that stops things from healing have straight up made some otherwise not possible fights possible.
What if the finger of death reflected back at the caster and created a unique undead? It retains its own free will, but because of the paradox it creates it could gain some new skills and spells

Hazirawn is an absolute beast. I use it as a Hexblade Warlock, with the black dragon mask. Its so good for Warlocks too!

X20 Adam Pick up robes of the archmagi to get 20 AC 0-0
The thing that makes the armour of invulnerability so epic is that it works with non-magical *damage* not attacks, meaning you could fall from a thousand foot drop, activate your armour on the way down and be completely unharmed.
Though fall damage caps out at 20d6 anyway for a maximum of 120 damage. By the time you're getting Legendary magic items anyone with Heavy Proficiency to actually use it could likely *survive* at least, though taking it from potentially inconvenient to utterly trivial (technically might not even be Prone since you didn't take any of the damage) is indeed pretty nice

You know what I really love about Artificer? A battle Smith can use a Holy Avengers and get its lvl 17 boost. So cool.

"Battle Smith sub class" - Can use martial weapons.

Just finally got the powered armor in my friend’s campaign with where I’m a battle smith some changes and flavor thrown in. Can’t wait to use it next session.
Not allowed for the bard, because critical role taught us well that a bard does not need increased spell DC

Don't know if this video was before or after artificer was released but artificers can, at a certain level, use the holy avenger
The Infernal Tack in Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes that belongs to the Narzugon is pretty OP. It lets you summon a nightmare. Only challenge rating 3 being, but said nightmare will let your party enter the ethereal plane! So you can pretty much make your whole party in a sense invisible with the thing! Which can come in super handy.

Since the robe of the archmagi doesn't limit the dexterity bonus that shit would be crazy on a multiclass wizard arcane tricster or even just a 13th level thief rogue, it'd be equivalent to +3 studded leather in addition to the other features.
In my High magic world Powered Armor is made for non-warforged Admirals and Generals of the Warforged nation
I'm playing a Yuan-Ti fighter (Eldritch Knight, built as a mutated pureblood who survived/escaped, and is a mage hunter). Snagging a Green Dragon Mask could be interesting. Her poison immunity would suddenly become healing. And could thwart, horribly, potential assassins. X3
I ended up with Hazirawn when playing Hoard of the Dragon Queen. DM never mentioned the spellcasting ability, nor did the sword ever speak to me. (He also made the sword try to take control of my character.) Very interesting, if you ask me.
THE DRAGON MASKS STACK WITH ROBE OF THE ARCHMAGI
YOU CAN GAVE A ROBE OF THE ARCHMAGI AND A DRAGON MASK AND WITH A 20 CHARISMA 10 DEX DRAGONBORN WARLOCK YOU CAN GET 20 AC
As a side note, it also stack with any other unarmored defense or natural armor feature since it doesn't add a new way to calculate your AC but instead applies a bonus to your already existing AC.
bouboulroz I would grab bracers of defense but that would be my third attunement slot ;-;

I'm playing a high level Dragonborn monk.
With proficiency in all saving throws and the mask of the dragon queen, i would be stupidly strong against saves.
And the other abilities of these masks are just helping me even more!

Cloak of invisibility is pretty sweet but i do not like the restrictions. i would rather get the elven robes instead. However they are not legendary. they are however an alternative and can be crafted by an artificer at level 6.
Robe of the archmage on a bladesinger. AC while in bladesong can be 25. Now add Shield spell to 30.
Green Dragon Mask can make me resistant/immune to/absorb poison eh?
Can't wait to get to lvl 10 with my Monk and hopefully come across it.
In my hotdq campaign we have a rule where after you kill a dragon you can roll a d100 and if you get a 100 you can roll in the dragon's blood and become a half dragon so obviously my party kills a black dragon and then immediately gets the black dragon mask so now I have someone immune to acid before we even start rise of tiamat
Vengeance paladin aasimar 17+ 3 lvls of celestial soul sorcerer = Witcher ! ^^

The robe of the archmage is definitely a relic of the times. Bards didn't used to get higher level spells until now, and bards could wear heavier armor compared to other casters. I guess it makes sense that they still can't use it, but I get that it doesn't make complete sense nowadays.
I'd argue that the powered armor is less Iron Man and more Bio-Booster Armor Guyver.
Could someone help me understand the whole Resistance > Invulnerable > heal that would happen with the Dragon Mask for instance? (Where in what books and such)

You remind me of someone, but i cant place my finger on it; a year late, but still a very informative video ty.
i love the hazirawn sword because in our campaing our rougue had the sword and he got alingment swaped and as did all his magic weapon so sudenly got a neutral good sword in our game but did get a lawful evil rougue wich brought its own problems but best rp we had all game was the evil sword bickering with our good rougue about killing and then the roll reversal
My personal favourite legendary magic item is Wave, that trident is just fucking nuts
I really don't like the alignment restriction on the robe, but mostly because it doesn't matter for the effects. All 3 versions do the exact same thing. It's not even a vaguely evil thing that would be weird for the average good character.
Even with Armour of Invulnerability a dragon could still carry you high into the sky and drop you though. Falling damage might be bludgeoning damage but it is not weapon damage and as such is not affected by the armour.
Or the dragon could just fly away. That works too.
You're immune to nonmagical damage period, not just nonmagical weapon damage.
You are correct, my mistake. RAW you would not take any falling damage.

surprisees me to not see the luck blade in here. you can cast wish up to three times a day. that is sooooo usefull in utility and in battle.

Level 10+ Monk with the Green Dragon Mask - heal from poison and have AC of 10 + Dex mod + Wis mod + Cha mod...
A monk propably wouldn’t have good cha (probably below 10). But it is worth for the pure healing acid :P

What respectable dragon has non-magical natural weapons? My dragons, before leaving the hatchling ground, has aquired a talon polish or tooth ring that gives them magical enhancement to their tooth, tail, or claw. I've never played in a setting where a dragon isn't smarter than most characters in a party.

It is probably best compared to lighting oil on fire with something small but magical like firebolt or produce flame. The initial fire is magical, as is the ignition in the dragon's throat, but once it sets alight the surrounding fuel, oil or oxygen, that fire is no longer considered magical
@@TheLegoLord100 If my memory seves me right (it probably doesn't) even the initial fire (or whatever) isnt actually magical either.
It should come from some weird chemical in their stomachs that they can send out and turn into the specific element.
Not magic but rather chemistry apparently..IDK it is weird but I guess it isn't made from magic.
Even if it isn’t magical fire/acid/lightning those things would NOT be protected against by that armor of invulnerability which only give resistance to pierce bludgeoning and slashing damage

I've always ruled that a robe of the archmagi's colour can be changed to match the new wearer after d4+1 days. keeps the alignment a factor but doesn't mean that it's useless to curtain characters

I had Hazirawn before I found those lousy bastards decided it wasn't allowed anymore. I would've preferred my Holy Avenger, but my Paladin basically owned the sword's will with his stupid charisma save.
I had the Black Dragon Mask too. It was a powerful pair.
My DM made Hazirawn a +2 great sword with attunement Because he thought it was "too powerful for 6th level"

Hello from exactly 2 years in the future
In 5e, all attacks by Acid, Cold, Fire, Lightning, Thunder, force, radiant, necrotic, etc. have no division between magic versions of that damage and non-magic versions of the damage. That division only exists for Bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage such as magic sword vs normal steel sword. Acid is just acid no matter how its created, summoned, or used to attack. Same for fire, cold, etc.
Again, Sage Advice: media.wizards.com/2019/dnd/downloads/SA-Compendium.pdf see the section on are Dragon breath weapons magical. There is a distinction between magic fire and non magic fire i.e. a torch vs a fireball

Sounds like there is a distinction between magical fire and non magical fire to me.
@@bouboulroz Congrats. You have found the ONLY reference to such a difference anywhere in the books. EDIT: I literally have had this question come up in my game 3 or 4 different times. I have never found anywhere that there is a difference in damage types for any energy damage. That cantrip is the only place I've seen even a reference to a difference between magic v non-magic energy and it doesn't refer to damage.
@@NerdImmersion I read it. It doesn't specifically contradict what I wrote above. The damage is Fire damage, not magical fire damage or normal fire damage just Fire damage. Spells such as anti-magic field prevent the source, such as a spell or magic item, from working but nothing alters the damage type.

Page 17 of the link above. It's written in full letter that armor of invulnerability will affect a dragon breath attack.
It also states further that if the damage (no matter the type of damage)is not from a magic item, a spell, a spell attack, fueled by magic slots nor stated magical, then it is considered non-magical.
Where is Black Razor that shit is over powered as all hell
It seems that magic items that have proper names or are referred to as "the (insert name)" are by default artifacts.
