I fully agree on your points and how easily you illustrate it all. WONDERFUL.
Alain de Botton is.... simply a genius. I've always think that religions were awesome institutions, but he basically articulated everything i always thought. Genius.
I really love Alain de bottom’s idea : the art of living. I found myself lost for years and one day I found one of his book, I started to go over all his speech and his explanation of love, life, stress, religions, media..etc all make sense to me. I really appreciate those brave and intelligent authors and speakers in the world make me have chances to keep learning and discovering myself on a daily basis!
I think this man is brilliant especially in assisting in the neurological navigation of relationships. It is a good talk. To say "I am an "Atheist" is about as off base as a person who wants to call "God" a man or woman or any other creature for that matter. Many religions have murdered the word. The word God needs to be redefined. It has been greatly missinterpreted. This word god that we are currently still trying to define today is pure energy and Pure Energy does exists.
Great talk. I think the answer to the last question could have been clearer though. I think the problem, as he points out, is that Dawkins only tells us what IS the case. Here's the truth. However, acknowledging our human insecurities and emotional needs, Dawkins does not tell us what we OUGHT to do, given these fact. So to go beyond Dawkins should not imply to make up new untruthful fairy tales, but to interpret the truths that we have found with regard to the existential questions that humans have. We do not only need the truth. We also need an interpretation of the truth regarding its implications, opportunities, challenges etc.
Demian Haki honestly I think that you're onto something regarding acknowledging our human insecurities and emotional needs. And of course as we grow our emotional needs change and that which we understand as our emotional needs may not actually be our emotional needs but symptomatic of something deeper. As I society I think we may get farther but acknowledging our human insecurities and emotional needs first as opposed to teaching the young be confident, be excellent, strive for perfection, trophies, to be the winner etc

He's Brilliant. Thank you. Now bring your school to Miami in a Predominately black community. Those that do not subscribe to folklore Christianity are suffering.
You address many thing that would help us gaining knowledge and also give shape of thinking how do system work even though we live such system and do practice in our daily like but we never know the real meaning of it so we need little bit change in our life to keep follow right guidelines..

An important component in these changes is that you need to pay people good wages. When people are poorly paid, then they have to work 3 jobs to survive. They become exhausted and stressed. If housing prices and rents go up, that drives the stress to intolerable levels. We can see that happening in the USA. It is that excessive stress which causes people to turn to fundamentalist religions which serve to distract people from their suffering. So a well-managed nation will have fewer crazy religions. In a well-managed nation, you can then also experiment with supporting people in emotional intelligence and successful relationships etc
It's not selling the ideas that's the problem. The problem is it's always been more lucrative to sell people a temporary treatment than a permanent cure.
These ideas sound interesting. We also need the distribution of money to support such ideas. You may like to read "The Nordic Theory of Everything" to flesh out these ideas.
"Of course god doesn't exist"? I don't think its nearly that clear cut. I'm not a religious man but I've heard many good arguments for the existence of "god".
Alain may like to read a bit more on ancient Chinese culture and history - secular and self -contained and spiritual.... does not need religion. And still flourished.
The closing words seem like such double talk: A man about to die has heard of angels and doesn't believe in God but desires an angel to hug him and help him at his time of death. Pitiful.
What will humanity become if humanity "in total" stopped believing in the continuation of themselves as a soul after death. I suspect it will not be pleasant. The existential problems that come with this belief may be insurmountable enmasse.
You only think that because you're scared of what it might mean but you don't know it for sure. Leaving religion was a difficult experience for me but it was worth it. Many who have done the same as I have will tell you the same.
We all have to die one day but an ideal death most of us reject that if you want to know what death is like ask a dead person not a good idea a seance in a dark room with strangers in a dark room no thanks
I think he’s great but his view of art is nonsense. Rembrandt wasn’t advertising religion. Some major commissions were for the church and he had to survive. He also did large, group portraits of noblemen and wealthy bankers but he wasn’t advertising wealth either. Art in museums isn’t dead. Major art museums have attendances in the millions. What will die with this kind of rhetoric is an appreciation for the poetry of contemplation and the idea of art that doesn’t actually ‘do’ any one thing in particular. I find it depressing to talk in this way as he’s a very funny and intelligent man.
Hmm - I think de Botton is "re-inventing the wheel" here. Nice to see an atheist whom on an intellectual level understands the great value of religion within human community but all he is doing here is creating a new religion. I think he would do better to further analyse religion/ human behaviour and see that it 1) Is arguable "innate" 2) It has to be founded on an "objective" principle in order for it to work (i.e. a human will not follow in great number and truthfully. something subjective - it has to be something greater than a theory) - for example if we can see the greater good, the intellectual argument and the obvious pattern within nature and our universe to believe in "Gaia" for example - this may work. 3) Disregarding religion is an intellectual mistake. After 1000's of yrs religions have persisted not because they are stupid and uninformed but because they have successfully governed and channeled human behaviour (if you accept humans require social order to thrive). Therefore, we should not be so quick to disregard the great religions. Maybe they are the best way but only require better knowledge of them?Greater intellectual understanding? Reformation of their current evolution? I love this subject but cannot stand those at the far ends of either spectrum - militant atheists and militant religionists -to my view they are both the same but believe they are poles apart.
Disregarding religion is not in any way a mistake, they work because people want to believe, religion is false and not necessary for any function of society.
People lie because of what they think; the liar is about the liar not about the person they are with, I'm not buying into that one. For one thing liars are insecure and think they know how you are going to react; so liars think for you and lie.

Religiously, an inflexible, everlasting god figure serves the role of parent.. When in reality even a god must grow and change, why else is there creation? God is experiencing itself, growing and changing through creation and the experience of creation.. Otherwise there is no infinite.
Well I think it's the easiest way to say there is a god out there, who is answering more or less all your questions for life and afterlife (if there is one) and so you just have to accept it and don't look for your way to answer the questions. to this part of your comment: "But the idea of an afterlife. Heaven and hell. Angles and satan. And all have a holy book. A manuscript" Well it can't get more simple to make people understand an ideology. You have the good "Angel" and "Heaven" and the bad "Devil" and "Hell". And a book, to have all this written down (most effective way).
There are lots of questions need an answer before moving to the stage of how to manage our life using what religion gave us we need to know the reason of our existence??? How atheism explain the existence of the DNA e.g. or the accuracy and sophistication of the universe orbits ,galaxies and planets The beauty of nature...etc Atheism doesn't answer all the questions but making up a fake solution or giving an excuse for anyone to choose what is right and wrong If we lost the sense of right and wrong the whole humanity is stray and lost
He said nothing about how "emotional education" could be implemented in the 21st century, so the title is very misleading! He is learned and interesting, but perhaps he doesn't have much idea about this topic.
How dismal and hopeless a position---to believe this life is all there is. What then of the aborted or stillborn and children who died at an early age? Cheated? "The fool has said in his heart 'there is no God'." The creation, evidence of a creator, has left them without excuse as written in Romans 1.
Why do you find Alain's position dismal? To believe there is more than this life does not establish there actually is. And quoting Biblical references to an atheist seems quite ineffective and does not prove the religious position is true.
@@memoryrinehart Are the astronomers who believe in a higher intelligence published? And by using, "higher intelligence" you have changed your original position. A higher intelligence may not be a personal being and may not have continued involvement with the world or be concerned with human morals. These concepts are a fundamental to Christianity. I suggest there is abundant evidence to make the idea of continued involvement in the world by a personal God deeply questionable.
Until one actually feels the presence of the Holy spirit one cannot specify emphatically that it does not exist. Thoughts do not make him real or unreal, it simply is. The world of the supernatural is not an intellectual playground, it just is. Negating those who believe is a expression of jealousy, perhaps because one hasn't experienced it themsleves. Intellectually Shaming those who believe, is a failed attempt to make the nonbeliever feel as the more enlightened one and most intellectually superior human, both of which are inaccurate and dangerous. Both sides of belief must be respectful to the other.
I think what you're talking about is feeling spiritual with the world, nature. Religion is a guise to help the lost. It's not bad, but it's really can make people fanatical. That's why the philosophers really have a hard time looking to GOD for answers.
"Until one actually feels the presence of the Holy spirit one cannot specify emphatically that it does not exist." This is the most circular, ridiculous logic I've come across all week. "You can't say something doesn't exist until you've felt its existence." Flawless.
People should always be loving toward eachother but Jesus never respected false religions and "commandments of men" taught as doctrine. He made a whip and drove out the merchants from the temple...!
Saying “ I’m not interested in the religion content only the mechanism” is a horrible thing to say that can only come from pure ignorance about the good of moral values religion brought into the world.
Es una conferencia muy superficial y mal traducida, pero me parece que las ideas de este Botton sobre la educación. la cultura y el arte, están muy acorde con la tradición norteamericana del utilitarismo, de convertir todo en dinero, y éste dinero ¿para quién?
Art is in the streets already used by cities , public art, to create a pleasant environment , realitors to beautitfy there buildings and keep down graffiti. This is not the art he seems to talk about . He seems to want art to be propaganda for pschyological wellness. This is happening on a small scale , You Are Beautiful , is a group that uses this phrase for public art. All this is fine about art really is a way to move a person into another state of being so they can heal from the day to day. The grants for creative art are being taken over by public beautifying and slogan art. Arts true purpose is to transform material into a new transcendent experience. Many past work of art were started as propaganda but because of the artists ability to transform paint , stone, ect. into another form ended up as transcendent experiences despite there initial purpose. I am worried the art he is talking about will be devoid of this transformation porcess and just be propaganda like facist art . The ture arts need to be supported more.
Strange, but refreshing to hear a writer admit that the world will not be changed by writing more books... But then follows the idea that somehow we are to magically establish new cultural institutions - amidst the current chaos - in order to save ourselves? Too late! This party without God is already at an advanced stage... The secular religion of materialism; with quality of life as goal of self-lovers; is alive and thriving. Hypnotic mass media and educational institutions are actively employed in the huge mind control experiment subjecting the global population to destructive cultural marxism; keeping the working class under control - entertained and amused - instead of training them how to think for themselves. And really, are there not already more than enough capitalists cashing in on other's problems? Even a child can understand that each individual has to take responsibility for his/her own wrong behaviour - lying included. Each one of us has a free will to do so (or otherwise); and one day each will give account. The same goes for the audience who has been lied to; this as far as extending forgiveness. To shame and make the innocent party look guilty for having standards; sounds too much like how SJW victims operate? You seem to be in defence of lies and adultery; are those the only categories of victims you have empathy with? Alain, you might have had much to offer, but somehow got lost along the way, and now you are using your platform to lead others astray. Humble yourself under God's mighty Hand.
You didn't understand, sadly, and I can not think of a clearer way to explain that other than how he said it. So, shall we give up on you? Isn't it terribly condescending to assume that you'll never get it? Or, could you please try harder? Please!
I love, Alain de Botton, but your introduction music is absolutely atrocious and annoying. Something of course UA-cam has no power over. However if CDI sees my comment than it will have been worthwhile to voice my opinion.
What is their problem with God?? Why cant they love God and still be intlects and philosofers!!! I agree with almost every thing he said and i just hoped he was a believer in God. Without God we are just ignorant talking animals
I understand the question. I was raised deeply religious myself. It is possible to love God/gods and still be intellects and philosophers. However, it is not the duty of the intellectual or philosopher to disparage faith by not mentioning it or by disagreeing with it; it is their position, not a factual claim. It is the duty of the intellectual and philosopher to move forward with matters of literal/physical materials; items which require the ability to translate the apparent into meaning. Faith is required in order to have a faith. Fact is desired in order to determine the existence/inexistence of fact. We are physical and literal and therefore prone to seeking fact. When we fuse faith and fact in our minds is when we begin to risk sanity, rendering us unable to truly enjoy or live for either.
We all have different life paths and journeys. Everyone has free will. Nothing is certain. And we create our reality according to our beliefs and energetic blueprint. So, in some people's world, it is the truth that there is no divine intelligence beyond humans. And for some, we can relate to that divine intelligence. To worry about another's beliefs means we haven't been healing that aspect of ourselves that wants to change what this planet is xx
The problem with god is that there isn't one, apart from the one humanity has invented. There is no anthropomorphic old man in the sky watching and judging every move of every individual on the planet. Believing in that sort of god means transforming something so breathtakingly beautiful and transcendent as the spiritual side of all there is into a fairy tale for little children. Those who are incapable of facing the indescribable need to invent and believe in a (often insanely cruel - read your ancient testament) father figure that will punish them for their sins. Every little thing in life can be profoundly spiritual in every single moment if one is willing to see it, without any help from fictional characters. But one also needs to be willing to take full responsibility for one's actions without relying on the fear of the wrath of an imaginary cosmic parent. As a humanity, we really need to grow up.
@@oliviaoff3516 how can there be spirituality without a spirit? Would that not be considered god? Maybe I misunderstood you? I'm just trying to understand all this god stuff.

So true xxx
People should always be loving toward eachother but Jesus never respected false religions and "commandments of men" taught as doctrine.
He made a whip and drove out the merchants from the temple...!
you need food to live--you need to feel God to feel alive
Which does not mean that there is actually a God

Where are the laughter to the jokes? It feels cringey to me that there's no vocal feedback to this man's brilliant humor...
Saying “ I’m not interested in the religion content only the mechanism” is a horrible thing to say that can only come from pure ignorance about the good of moral values religion brought into the world.
Yes religion understood how not to privatize the soul. And still does !
she lies because she FEELS ashamed and there is a good REASON for this
You didn't understand, sadly, and I can not think of a clearer way to explain that other than how he said it.
Yeah, we could do all of that...or....we can just keep religion.
Except that religion also causes a multitude of problems along with the ones it solves. I think there is a better way
What is their problem with God?? Why cant they love God and still be intlects and philosofers!!! I agree with almost every thing he said and i just hoped he was a believer in God. Without God we are just ignorant talking animals
Wait for it. He may be with the in group at Matthew 25:31-46.
Alain, you need God.
Maybe he does, maybe the way our brains evolved so far makes us feel the need of a God.
Nonetheless, this doesn't mean that God actually exist.
