I found you 2 days ago, and between my husbands profile and mine we have watched all of your videos! We are so excited how your hives are doing. Our kids are excited to see how the hives are doing when you post again.
They are also kind of jealous that the boy drones get to just hang around and do nothing while the girl workers and queen do everything 😂 (5 and 7 year old boys who hate they have chores lol)
We are learning so much about bees and love that we have learned with you in a way- we have learned from your journey 💗

Hey Jim ,we use the plastic rite cell frames as well.
A tip if you will please.
Melt some of your old comb and render it clean in a dish.
Let it set until it's like rock or getting that way like a crayon.
Then take a piece and vigorously rub it all over the new plastic foundation.
It will speed up the comb drawing and save the lil ladies tons of energy having to produce wax themselves to draw the frames out.

I was able to get a feral hive - it was very fragile but has apparently now made up for lost time. Now that I've wandered all over my comment, I will end with this - with our weather going from 75 degrees to low 40's and lower at night - it;s beyond frustrating......at the end of the day - it's all a crap shoot, isn't it? I've done a lot right, I've done a lot wrong - it's amazing I haven't killed my queen yet - your willingness to be honest and to share what has worked and has not worked allows me the ability to not be so hard on myself - thanks for the freedom to make mistakes, then forgive myself.

What I do upon a suggestion from my wife is use a nuc box. Place a lid upside down on the ground next to hive and put the box on that. It’s a great place to set your frames as you inspect.

Your balboas 2nd granddaughter is definitely still a virgin! Looking Good, I went from 1 hive to 7 this year past my 5 from last year(4 died). Only 2 had queens and the other 5 just had queens hatch and mate so my little nucs are about to start roaring!
*The flow is on! you wont need to feed really, they will just back fill the brood nest if there is no other drawn comb. If they had no resources in the hive feed imo, but if there is plenty of stores I would let them forage and get the more nutritious food.

Making more bees is more fun than free honey. Although at some point next spring the overwintering colonies will attempt to split themselves (swarms). This fun will continue. As a new beek you, me and all new beeks must decide if you want bees or honey. You can split and split and split. 5 for 1 and the bees will do the work. Just bee 😜prepared with equipment next spring.

Yeah Buddy!! can't say enough good things.
Few thoughts for what they're worth. I like how those resource hives are setup with the shared wall. I was thinking that you could use a similar technique for winter. (putting the hives wall to wall & then insulating) i'm sure there are complications, but the group bundling/ heat sharing seems like it might be beneficial for you & your bees.
I like that you'll be naming the hives. I think having last names (balboa) is a really fun way to identify them and maintain continuity of genetic origin. Then you can add first names or designations the keep track of all the siblings. One thing that is also fun is to find a naming theme (think ninja turtles>renaissance painters) and have a bunch of names on standby so that they all fit the theme. maybe grape varietals, flower names/types something reminiscent of vino & farm??? You've already got some colors setup on the resource hives. you could use color as another naming structure & labeling scheme.
& maybe you can trim those frame hangers in half, cuz i'm seeing you only use them to hold 1 frame at a time and the rest of the hanger just gets in the way. It might benefit also from a little lip at the end and "tooth" to keep the frames from sliding off.
Cheers!!! you gonna try a flow this year? I know not about the honey, but with your success this year maybe worth seeing how they handle it.

    • @vinofarm
      @vinofarm  6 років тому +1

      Great ideas, as always, friend!
I was hoping to try another round of splits sometime in the next 1-2 weeks. If I can get a laying queen by early August, she will build up enough to fill a nuc before October. Then I can try my hand at overwintering nucs. I definitely want to stack the nucs together and insulate them as a single unit so they share heat.
I'm leaning toward naming by colors because I've painted the full hive boxes the same colors as the nucs they're in. So the yellow nuc will go into a yellow hive box, etc. And of course, I need to stick with the Italian names for the Italian bees and so on... We'll figure it out.
I will definitely be cutting those hive hangers. GREAT idea. I'll definitely grind a groove out so the frame ears don't slide off. I wish I had thought of that.
It's going to be to late for the flow box this year. I'm going to have a look at the big hive this weekend and see what they've done in the supers. It's been two weeks and whatever flow we had is over now. If I put the flow frames on now, they'll just sit there until August flow. ANd then there's the risk they don't even use them. OR, don't fill them up all the way. I'm really not broken up about it. I decided this year was about BUILDING the bee yard. Next year I'll try to set aside a few hives for production and get the flow box on first thing in spring.

I would put a 110 Vac setup to the yard B4 Winter. I live in a 9b Climate and don't have such problems. Then options to keep them heated in Winter with a 3 Watt heater is no problem. Some live in a Northern latitude. Much different than mine.

I went to Italy last week!!... and my top suggestion for a name is: Medici (pronounced Med-E-chee) - this was a very powerful and influential family in/near Florence that were into banking, patrons of the Renaissance, ruling whatever towns they could conquer... and even finagled to get 2 of their kids to be Popes! You could even hyphenate it with a color. "Medici-Green".

    • @chamqual6480

My second suggestion is: Bernini (pronounced Burr-nee-nee). Most influential artist in Rome in the Renaissance, and sculpted this BEE fountain in Rome!!

      ... "Bernini-Orange"!? :)

Glad it worked out after that discussion. These gals will surprise you repeatedly. I am again dealing with the same issue. The queen hatched, in fact there were two of them, I couldn't find either with numerous searches after a robbing issue that did wipe out another nuc where they killed the queen, I added 2 more queen cells 2 days from emergence and they chewed them out. I have looked 7-8 times since on different days and nothing anywhere. I just added a half drawn frame to them today that was loaded with eggs yet again, they have been queen-less other than the virgins that hatched and disappeared in 2 days for a over a month now. If they don't queen up I will give up and combine them with another nuc. I added a lot of nurse bees with the frame today to keep their numbers high even though after the robbing I added two capped frames to strengthen them. We finally got some rain so that relieved the early dearth... I may get them built up yet.
BTW, I want to enlist you for something. You are quite observant and there is this issue that is supposedly settled that is still being argued, simply this. Do bees ever move eggs? I have people that swear they do and experts like Bush that have studied and said they do not. I have seen some evidence in one colony I have that they might. I know each colony is different and some do things others never would. If you ever run across this as you are splitting and having issues keep this in mind.
I am following another bee keepers odd issues that may show that not only do they move them, they may actually steal them from another hive. I know that sounds off the wall nuts, but I have seen the oddest things with these gals. They are more than determined to survive as a colony and at this point I wouldn't put anything past certain colonies and or breeds.... Just something to watch for. I have found that a combined effort among many people can find surprising results that were never found in a study due to the diversity involved. :) We never stop learning if we keep our minds open.

Rockette for one of the Balboa sisters. (fem.rocky plus they're rocking it!)
Maybe Saint Beetersberg for one of the russians. (gotta love bee puns)
    Exciting times!!

Absolutely love your videos and the cinematography, and dancing jigs, too! What suit are you using? I know this probably, but I like the hat and want to be more like the Vino Farm Bee Guy!

Congrats, that went really well. 100% success rate, that' amazing.
I started this year in beekeeping, a few months after start watching your channel. bought 2 hives and captured other 2.
One of the bought ones isn't doing so well because of a defective queen, but the others are great.
It's been very interesting following your channel. It's been inspiring, and also curious how different beekeeping is there when compared to Portugal. Region and type of bees really make alot of difference in beekiping
    Best regards and good luck

Love the TA-DA! Queen >> sound effect!
Would be educational for you to explain what a Nuke is?
and all other *insider* beekeeper terminology.
For example: please unpack what you call resource hive - why do you call it that?

Have you ever thought of trying to cultivate some solitary bees as well? They may not give you honey, but while honey bees have a 5% pollination rate solitary bees have a 95% rate that can increase your plant and fruit crop yield. If you decide to get some make sure to do a video on it!

Started the season with three hives...two of which were pretty strong, after a nasty (late) Winter.....and NOW look at you!! Very cool...nicely done! When I first started watching your channel, I can remember thinking, "What the hell is he doing??" ...but I am definitely NOT an expert, so I watched, hoping to learn....and learn, I have! :-) Yup, I realize that you don't consider yourself an expert, either, but you have obviously accumulated enough knowledge to have confidence in your experiments...and rightfully so!
I'm still voting for the Balboa offshoots to be named 'Marco' and 'Polo!' The other three?? The first thing that came to mind was 'Winkin,' 'Blinkin,' and 'Nod'....but I bet someone can do better. Nature is endlessly fascinating, isn't it?

Your having a great season this year!!!!!! I'm not having much luck. My bees are just existing and not expanding... ???
I'm using the same waxed black foundation as you and they keep messing up most of the small amount they have drawn on them.
Oh and to top it all off, in my last inspection two days ago I couldn't find my queen but did find two new still open but occupied queen cells. ??? My queen was only 8 weeks old?

I love this channel..everything about it; videos are well done, your enthusiasm, all of it. Sorry if you’ve already answered this, but where do you get your wooden ware?

    • @vinofarm
      @vinofarm  6 років тому

Patrick Snyder So far, Brushy Mountain and BetterBee. BetterBee is in NY and has the best prices these days but they add shipping. Being relatively close, shipping is usually cheaper than the other places that have "free shipping" but inflated prices on the products. I am very happy with both companies. I just go for the best deals when they come up.

Yeah, I had a set of those frame holders and I chucked them. Pretty useless. I have one with a support bar welded between the 2 sides now so it’s a lot more sturdy.

Congrats, my first walk away splits were a few days behind yours, 2 nucs = 2 laying workers. Queens never made it back from mating flight...
That just means I get to try again!
    Congrats on your ladies!!!!

Bummer. The shortest recovery time will be to shake those frames and let those bees go into other hives. And remove those boxes. It will take way to long to fix this in other ways. Those laying workers and building drone colony’s. The other hives will kill the laying workers and except the regular workers and nurse bees. I know it’s harsh but you can’t change the laying workers back into normalcy. Good luck. Love Bees!

      @drootopia 6 років тому +1

KIS E. POOH it is sad, but I shook them yesterday. Will be doing anpther split soon. But I ordered a couple queens. I may try to do one walk away, just to see, but I will probably wait till next year.

Drew White if your splits were done at the same time as Jim's, how could you tell they went laying worker? You know that a newly mated queen often lays two or more eggs in a cell? It generally takes 4 weeks after going broodless for laying workers to develop. Good luck with your next round of splits.

Amazing Video. This season seems to be wonderful for you.
I was also thinking how many hives you have now? hard to keep count with similar names
    perhaps making in order? like
    hive 1. Balboa hive (original)
    hive 2. Russian hive right(original)
    Hive 3. New Italians
    Hive 4/Nuc 1. Balboa 2/ Balboa Violet
    Hive 5/Nuc 2. italian 2/Italian Green
    Hive 6./Nuc 3. Russian 2 Carniolan/ Russian Yellow
    Hive 7./Nuc 4. Italian 3 Carniolan/ Italian Blue
    Hive 8. Balboa 3 Autoqueen
    I don't know, just a suggestion :)
    have a nice week.

Ishan Khan I was thinking something like this but giving names going in alphabetical order (starting with b for balboa). But it would definitely be helpful for him to write the lineage on the screen when checking hives. And the colors help too for the colored hives- maybe he can color the rest too

Hey I noticed in your last video, on your fence posts you don't have post caps...I sell fences here in Maryland. Yes it's a real job lol.....it will keep the water from running down into your posts and damaging them...you can buy cheap plastic ones at Home Depot or on line for like a dollar a piece. The will last a lot longer ...love the videos btw !!
