Oh thank goodness for curtain calls. The magic of Jonas Kaufmann and Anja Harteros together is that they are totally believable. I got so absorbed in the plot and that awful guillotine scene that the tears were rolling down my face. And that's just watching the dvd. I was so relieved when he appeared for the curtain call! 😅❤

La splendide musique de Umberto Giordano n'était-elle déjà pas assez évocatrice pour décrire l'injuste condanation à mort de André Chénier?...Fallait-il que l'on voit en plus d'une guillotine sur scéne, la décapitation de ce poéte emblématique de la révolution française ?...Bien qu'il s'agisse d'un opéra vériste, je doute que cette décapitation soit vraiment indispensable...Bien sur, ce nest que mon humble avis...Anja Harteros et Jonas Kaufmann, magnifiques vocalement, sont tout au long de l'opéra, et surtout dans cette scéne finale, tout a fait bouleversants.
Very nice production, up to date without being hyper-severe and self-indulgent of the scene designer. A little too graphic for my tastes but otherwise very compelling and kept me engaged. This I would have happily paid money to see. Kaufmann and Harteros make very believable lovers and have wonderful voices. Bravi.

Incredibly over the top music; but we all need to go over the top sometimes! Kaufmann and Harteros have such exceptional voices, and here their acting is fantastic; the production is so much more realistic than the Covent Garden one, where everybody is immaculately clean and well turned out. The only big regret I have with this clip is that both singers, but particularly her, get so involved with the drama that they are badly out with the orchestra. This weakens the drama rather than enhancing it. Being a gentleman I would have thought that he would have let her go first!!

Parce qu'ils sont les personnages, parce que la mise en scène crue traduit toute l'abyme de la Terreur. Parce que la musique est envoutante et vous prend à la gorge, servie par de formidables interprètes. Du grand opéra tout simplement, sans délire abstrait ou réinterprétation scabreuse ou prétentieuse. Bravo.
Totally agree. Watch Caballé & Carreras at the Met Centennial Gala. It's another level, musicianship, timbre, singing style, EVERYTHING. Jan: No need for talking about armchair specialist, bla, bla, bla ... Just LISTEN. Everybody has ears, being at the Academy, at the armchair, at the sofa, etc. By the way: awful production, full of people distracting from what is a DUET. But moves the Economy, giving a little share of money for everybody, understandable. Even a little copyright share for DC Comics ... LOL.

Kaufmann ingolato, Harteros - non si capisce in che lingua canta, ambidue - stile sbagliato , in piu - troppa gente dintorno - questa e una scena intima , un' espressione intima di amore supremo - non m'interessanno les trouvailles del Signor Stolzl. Finalmente - Omer ! senti un po i vecchi direttori e cantanti di questo stile per imparare il vero rubato del Verismo. Altrimenti , sei abbastanza bravo.
This Opera requires a flexible, effortless voice and perfect diction. Due to his throaty voice technique (Voce ingolata), his perfomance isn't as good as many other Tenors. For this Opera i prefer Tenors like Franco Corelli, Mario del Monaco, Placido Domingo, Marcelo Alvarez, Giovanni Martinelli, Aureliano Pertile. His Performance looks a bit stressed and I missed the effortlessness in his singing and acting ! I think, Jonas Kaufmann has passed his zenith.

Aberrantes la dirección de escena y la escenografía. El ARTE sugiere... y no dice ni muestra explícitamente lo innecesario. Más grotesco, imposible, y levantar para mostrar al pueblo/público la "cabeza"... ¡el colmo! La realidad es una cosa, pero el A R T E... es o debería ser OTRA. Un desperdicio para estos protagonistas. Y haber tenido que terminar este aria tan íntima, profunda y trascendente no a solas sino en medio de la multitud desaforada, fue un error del réggiseur. También fueron muy exagerados los gestos de Kaufmann cuando aún estaban solos en la prisión. "Chénier" asumió su muerte con grandeza y dignidad, no así: desesperado. Lo menos ES MÁS. Grotesco, obsceno. Lamentable. Un desperdicio.
