Synthetic Bonfire ... IN STEREO! Fantastic.
This is some seriously impressive work, the amount Arbhar can do really has gone crazy. It'll sound overly gushy but thanks for making such a capable, powerful, inspiring tool.

I just want to tell you at Instruō how much I appreciate all the content you make available in terms of online tutorial/info content. Having videos like this truly sets you apart from most of the other eurorack brands (as far as I know). It's incredibly valuable having content with this amount of detail and depth available for those of us that would otherwise miss out on so much of what these things can do. Thank you so much!

Wow! Christmas came early this year! Between this and the Lubadh update, Instruo went from #1 module manufacturer to… what’s above #1? lol. Seriously though, anyone considering their modules for the first time, just buy them, they are infinitely inspiring. Jason, please thank the whole team for all of this work. (P.S. I still wish someone would write a Scion 2.0. The most beautiful module ever made and I wish it did more.)

I've tried granular modules several times, and I sold them all. I had the feeling that granular was not for me. But not this time! This arbhar module is very spontaneous to play without any shortcuts and menu diving which are very difficult to remember when we play live and have a lot of other concentration. This module really has a definition: just play and have fun! thanks Instruo!

Loving the stereo mode. Offsetting the sense and input gains ( i.e not having them at 12 o'clock ) is giving me some really interesting effects.

Wow! What an incredible module. To be honest, I started watching the video having zero idea of what the Arbhar did and was blown away just by the first example and explanation of the UI. What an audio treat of a module and a way of exploring sound that I hadn’t thought of before. This method of implementation the way the grains are enveloped is incredible. I’ll put this on the list of modules I’ll get if money falls from the sky of which there are many but goodness, so well thought out! Excellent explanation as well. Guess I’ll keep watching in a few chunks.

Incredible work! You can really tell that a lot of thought went into this update, both in terms of added features and improving of the existing ones. Although you guys gave me a very thorough presentation of the new firmware in Superbooth, seeing this video with all the features explained one by one surprised me both in terms of quantity but most importantly in quality. Thank you so much, keep up the good work ! :)

One of the major update on the Arbhar is the reduction size of the grains witch make a huge difference when it comes to play very small grains (V1:40 ms and V2:5 ms). So now instead of having on the V1 the wavetable stage coming, you can still play with the V2 very sharp grains. Really great job guyzz

Guys, I made it to the granular delay patch and I'm ecstatic right now. I really think that Arbhar could be an autonomous instrument for a performance as a desktop device. With bigger knobs and modulation possibilities and the reverb & delay fx both available any time. I mean this has become a next level granular performance engine.

I'd been having a few issues replicating the some of the button combos, thinking my Arbhar might have a fault. Have just read the manual and realised that, for example, switching in and out of the Load/Save menu requires that Shift/Capture/Strike be pressed IN THAT ORDER. I was pressing the first two simultaneously followed by Strike, and wondering why it wasn't working. The importance of RTFM! 🙃

Really enjoying the accumulative recording mode. I used to do this a lot with the Line 6 DL4 in my first band as a teenager. Creating small glitches, feedback, notes, arps etc I guess it was kinda granular in a way and I definitely didn't understand what granular synthesis was. Excited to explore this with the arbhar, it opens up a whole new world of textures.

      Thanks so much!
One clarification: there isn’t actually a hardware 2.0
All Arbhar are the same :)
The firmware update is V2.0 and new production stock ships with it preinstalled.
Upgrading an Arbhar to V2.0 with either a manual update or with the preflashed SD card provided with the expansion update pack will result in the same.

Thanks mate. I still struggle to understand presets vs layers vs scenes. I get what each respective one is, I am still having issue figuring out the hierarchy and the connection between the three. I don't think I am alone with this so short video would really help. Cheers for this massive one.

    • @instruo
      @instruo  2 місяці тому +2

      @@earlsfield in a nutshell:
      • Presets are configurations of the parameters/control configurations.
      • Layers are the audio buffers α/β/γ/δ/ε/ζ
      • Scenes are a combination of the two. A scene can load audio into all layers at once and a preset.
Good way to think of it is like a way to recall audio and behaviour that might pertain to a particular song/patch/performance.
My video is a big one 😂
      The manual is extensive also.
But beyond that we do have a full time support team who are there to advise and answer any questions :)
We all patch and make music as well and design modules that do the things we want. So beyond technical support, we’re here to advise on patching and the creative side of things too.

@@instruo Cheers mate, your video is amazing, I watch your videos a lot, have quite a few Instruo modules and your tutorials are amazing and in depth. I was just trying to get a grasp of the hierarchy and what is detached :) I do have a question though, although I might direct that to your team - can you time warp samples here, flex in a way? Follow mode seems like that. Is there a way to clock follow mode so the playback speed would fit the clock? Or is this more of Lubadh ground?

    • @instruo
      @instruo  2 місяці тому +2

      @@earlsfield thanks so much! ☺️
Each individual grain is varispeed (slower-lower/faster-higher). But because the playback is granular it offers the unique character and capabilities of elongation through granular synthesis.
The Lubadh is more macro. It’s an emulation of traditional audio looking mechanics.
Both modules are essentially audio processing platforms. Lubadh can be configured into pretty much any type of delay effect configuration. Arbhar is an absolute beast!
Collaborating with Sebastian for many years now has been an incredible experience. The granular engine in the Arbhar predates its hardware iteration by about 15 years! The Lexer method has been in use and development and refinement through Seb’s career!
It’s such a powerful and versatile module. Especially with V2.
…and there is so much more to come!

    • @earlsfield
      @earlsfield 2 місяці тому

@@instruo feel like both compliment each other, I have lots of delays in modular and standalone form, so I went for Arbh because deffo feels like most powerful granular module out there (and I have went through Cloudsmania :)) layers, modes, even wavetable, now with fw 2 its even more interesting, mainly because I can plug poly synths and create havoc. Used Morphagene for that but Arbhar with layers is way more down what I wanna do. Lubadh - i love tape and tape delays, worked with tape for a long time. Still some nifty stuff in there might pick that one up too! Beebop was working on 1u tape I gotta check with him if its finished lol keep rocking you guys!

New production stock Arbhar and the upgrade expansion packs are in stores and available now :)
The new production stock ships with the CV and USB expanders.
The upgrade expansion packs are a limited run, but are entirely optional purchases. The firmware is available to download from the Support page for free.
The USB breakout is simply convenience.
The sample library is a short term exclusive with the expansion pack, but will eventually be published online for download.

Hmmm having problems with the Granular delay patch. For some reason, unlike Jason, when I patch the trigger out into the capture input and already have capture active like he does, the trigger is resetting the playhead as well as the record head (it basically goes back to blipping on and off with the trigger, whereas capture remains active with his). @@JohnoWells not to be snarky here either!.. but I’m just trying to help! 😬
It’s late here, I caught your comment and typed up a quick message pointing you in the direction of where you’ll get a precise answer.
Are you looking to load a single sample to a layer? Or are you loading a full scene to replace audio in all 6 buffers at once?
Either of these can be achieved but have different mechanics to them as well as additional considerations that might be made ahead of time when curating your audio content.
Connect your USB drive and enter the clone/load/save menu.
      Shift+capture+strike.
The colours will change and you will see three white lights across the display.
These three lights indicate the menu pages for:
      • Cloning or loading single samples
      • Loading scenes
      • Saving scenes.
Pages are changed with capture and strike. The current page will have its own colour scheme and will have its page indicator pulsing.
(Press the same button combo to exit if you change your mind)
Here it’ll be easier for me to directly you to the sample pack management manual at this stage. Which I believe you to have downloaded already.
Pages 22/23 explain the steps how to load individual samples to a layer.
Pages 24/25 explain how to load a scene which will fill all 6 layers at once.
Scenes are more complicated as there is also the option of loading a “preset” file which can be curated with particular sets of samples. This can quickly load variations of parameter configurations. This is what we call scenes.
Loading scenes is extremely powerful and can be used to pull up entire performance configurations of module behaviours and sound sources at once.
I’d highly recommend reading through the manual. If anything is at all unclear, I have a full time support crew who are here to help get people up and running with their modules.
We’re a team of musicians as well. So if there are any question beyond just the tech and mechanics, we’re more than happy to help creatively and try to provide solutions to creative problem solving.
I hope this helps as a starting point for you.

@@instruo WOW... Thank you *so much* for the time you took to write all this. I'm positive it will help many.
First, I ASSumed incorrectly it would be simpler. ie: drag samples into a single folder and they would magically appear on layers 1-6, ready to use.
No creating scenes, watching colors change, learning key combos, or finding the interest or time in learning the complex situations you've explained. Not complex to the engineer who coded it, but a little dense for the musician who purchased your instrument.
I'm positive all the upgrades are wonderful, but from a non-engineer perspective, sometimes easier is the way to go. I know from speaking with many friends over the years about Arbhar that #1 easy loading of samples was a big one, and #2: true stereo inputs.
But I also understand (from the manufacturer side) the delicate balance of over-engineering a module to "do it all" vs. the "one knob-per-function", which obviously something deep and magical like Arbhar (or Morphagene, for that matter) could never be.
Someday I might find the time and interest to learn the key combos and new upgrades, but honestly, I was just hoping to purchase the $110 2HP USB add-on to load up my Arbhar with cool samples and get to work.
Again, thank you for your candor and time to write this out for everyone. Much respect.

Just a personal suggestion from an owner of this module, choose what features to keep and what to leave out, make it simpler and more user friendly. It's a nightmare to remember every button combination to access menus and submenus and all the stuff around there. The phase switch button combination is hilarious, I mean we don't have just arbhar in our racks, if all modules would be like that eurorack would be impossible to use. I like the module though, it's just too much and most of the features are useless in my opinion.

I definitely changed my perception of the Arbhar when changing to the V2.0 firmware.
I describe it more as a platform now than being a single focussed module.
The granular engine is a bit like an operating system where it can be fine tuned and tailored to very optimised use cases.
It really is part of the fun of modular I think. The majority of my designs are more traditional analogue module designs that can combine to a much more traditional synth. But then adding in the deeper platform modules like arbhar and lubadh bring a deeper level of complexity!
It's largely why I end up doing such long videos. Because I try to showcase a wide range of use cases.

@@instruo past a certain level of depth and complexity (pages, menus, submenus, etc.) you should put a screen on the module or create an editor app. Humans are not meant to remember all the buttons combinations, colors, and weird stuff this firmware includes. Most of us just wanna make music without re-watching this video and reading the manual every time we wanna play with this module. It's just become a nightmare to operate it and that's why I'm selling it. I own roughly 30 modules and this is by far the trickiest one, sometimes less is more.

@@leonardocaminati6432 Sorry to hear that Leonard.
To each their own 🙂 I'm not a screen fan personally so I don't design interfaces with them.
The arbhar is deep! I absolutely agree that it takes an investment of time and practice to know it at a muscle memory level. (Much like learning guitar or piano)
What I was describing was how I've grown to approach it personally, where I tailor a single focussed behaviour as a preset (which does take some manual revisits), but allows me to have it operate in a focussed and particularly optimised way for a system/patch/composition.
Everyone works in different ways. I design my modules somewhat selfishly to suit how I patch.

    • @instruo
      @instruo  Рік тому +1

I had to very much go with efficiency of design. The USB expander is simply a port extension mounted (sturdily) to 2HP.
The front USB access is mainly a convenience factor. The arbhar actually originally didn't even utilise the USB port at all! First protoypes didn't even have a port on the PCB! Adding it was for use as a hardware development utility.
It was very late stage development where we realised it was actually feasible to utilise it as external memory.
The downside being the bandwidth limitation and slow read/write speeds of generic USB devices.
There is no active circuitry on the USB expanders (which were developed to function with both Lubadh and Arbhar in similar ways).
The arbhar hardware unfortunately also had no remaining ADC channels for external inputs. Including extra CV inputs with the USB is an impossibility because of this.
The arbhar's existing hardware was a core challenge to developing the V2 firmware! But I was very sure that any limitations in hardware interface and requirement for a new menu and button combos etc, was a much better path than developing a whole new V2 module!
Doing that would have split our resources to best support an old version while actively trying to sell as many new versions as possible. (The modern smart phone model!)
      I hope this makes sense!
But also I want to be clear that your suggestion is a good and valid one! The arbhar would certainly benefit from some extra I/O ;)
We are still very very early days with V2 and many things are possible!

@@instruothank you for your comprehensive answer. I understand adding new 'active' CV inputs would need larger hardware changes with all new challenges.
What I actually meant was to have one or two jack inputs next to the USB, just like on the included expansion, which you could connect to the original expander header on the Arbhar itself. Because the MOD input is the only input I use on the original expander (and I think many of us do), one could have the new expander replace the original one, having easy USB access together with one or two external inputs of the original expander. It still would be a passive expander.
If there is space in the back of the new expander, it would be an easy DIY to add a jack socket (or two).
