Thank you Tara for sharing all the after stroke Rehabilitaton, especially this one on creating stability in the shoulder girdle by maintaining the affected shoulder /arm in external rotation as you move the arm in flexion, abduction, diagonal reach…it makes a great deal of sense…since you’re speaking my language I’m a Pilates practitioner and a Clinical Exercise Physiologist. I had my stroke in February, 2023 and my worst biomechanical challenge is my frozen shoulder 0 my left hans spasticity…(my hans is open and I can use it to perform daily duties, but it gets more spastic (tighter towards evening) and it seems that it got worse in the last couple of months…why?
thank you for your videos they help me out i had my stroke on 7/10/2019 was a 100% wheelchair but with p/t and watching your videos and determination i am walking with a cane yes i use a AFO brace & a knee brace but i am determined to get better

I'm a stroke patient. I hv problem with my right arm. Whenever I raise my arm it starts shaking. Mam videos are so useful, so I want to ask u to suggest me some exercise to bring stability in my arm.
I had a stroke November 1 last year. I had this problem. Pain. While. Working range of movement. I developed a movement l call the umbrella. Also another. Circular movement l call the train. While. Laying on your side. .informative. 😎.
I had an ischemic stroke 3 years ago and have mild to moderate spasticity in my left hand and arm. These stretches are exactly what I need to keep my shoulder from going forward and down. Thank you. My biggest issue is my thumb folds in and my index finger points up. My pressing question is am I making my spasticity worse with weight training and yoga? I notice my arm feels tighter and “shorter” sometimes after these exercises. I started weight training about a year after my stroke and it has definitely helped with strength and coordination but is it overall hurting more than helping?
This is an excellent question! Yes, weight training will make spasticity worse. I would say if the pain/tightness (after weight training) interferes with your quality of life, I would not do it. That being said, there is a time to consider returning to activities you enjoy even if it makes your spasticity worse. Only you will know when that time comes. :) Here is a video on how to open the hand: ua-cam.com/video/BvprnaIPrLo/v-deo.html

Thanks for watching! He is still in the very early stage. Keep helping him with the movements that are difficult so the brain will not "forget" how to do these movements. Check out the playlist titled stroke arm. You might find some of those videos helpful as well. :)
Great video!!! More exercises to strengthen the weak external rotators, please, when passive ROM is ok.... are these shoulder blade exercises enough to get the "normal" rhythm? Laying on the back, arm lifting is no problem, sitting up, no way to pass over 90 degrees....more exercises or info to overcome this critical point please....it seems as if the arm muscles were to weak to lift the arm, but I guess it is the "anchor".....the dynamic stabilisation of the blade??? Thank you very much for all the super videos!!
Hi Marina. This is an excellent question and I think you are on the right track with your rationale as to why you can't lift the arm in sitting. This is a really common problem and has many factors that may limit active movement against gravity (sitting up). Look through the videos as I have done a few "series" on a progression to help with this :)
Can you post a link or the name of the wrap you use too keep the affected hand on the cane please I need one badly my wrist won’t stay palm up no matter how much I stretch when performing the exercises
Thanks for the exercises. They really help. However, I find it difficult to know where I should start. Could the arm videos maybe be numbered or put in the order that one should do them
I have right sided weakness recently had left hemipons stroke jan 6,2022 and was discharged home 11th January what are the exercises i need to do foe my fast recovery to return my power on right side
People have told me that I am an inspiration because of my determination in the face of the adversity I've experienced. It's been nearly 12 years since my last TBI, & while I've made significant gains, there's still plenty of work to do. I know it's difficult to stay the course, but hang in there.
It’s the second time I have watched this video with interest. Had a stroke in 2009 and like your poster behind you on the wall I try my best everyday and will never give up. I have left side deficits. And I have been trying lying on the floor stretching the two main ligaments under the armpit. These are so tight it causes a lot of pain. I certainly are adopting some or all of your recommendations to try stop this left are doing it’s own thing with no control. Love to see your input on this issue. Good job with the video. What is the dowl robplain wood or anything special with say central spring to bend? Cheers Gavin Nelson New Zealand
Hi tara I have a question. I the bicep area I have a knot in the middle of my arm. U can feel it when sitting and trying to raise it. Any ideas of what is going on or how to get it to relax thank u for all u do for us
Hard to say. If it is a large hard spot in the muscle, you should get this checked out by a doctor. If it is truly a "knot", this video might help: ua-cam.com/video/gct-2dqLObs/v-deo.html or ua-cam.com/video/vBewElX9M08/v-deo.html

Is there someplace else I can find the previous 2 episodes? You mentioned they would be linked. I don't see them in the show more section. I may not be looking in the correct space. Please help. Thank you in advance.
Hi Dr. Tara! These arm and shoulder exercises are perfect for me. Thank you!! Do you have any suggestions for stretching while sitting for long periods? I sit at a computer all day for work (thank goodness I kept my job after my stroke! :) ). My desk raises and lowers which is nice so I can stand and use it for some of the of the stretches, but while I am working, my left arm just seems to want to bend and tighten up.
Thanks for the comment! That is an excellent idea for a video. I am sure that many people struggle with the arm tightening up when sitting at a computer. Stay tuned!! :)
I used to be able to use my right arm a lot. I used to be able to move up my right arm overhead but now I can barely make a 90 degree angle without my arm hurting. Why is that dr. Tara?
Is it possible to re-learn to raise the arm, if the muscles are already decreased due to immobility? and how can these muscles gain strength with passive exercises?
I'm currently learning and strengthening both of my arms. I broke my c5 and shattered c6 and was paralyzed neck down for awhile. Do what she's saying and it will come back. Move mountains my friend!
Believe in yourself, believe, turn your hand with a barbell in all directions, turn your head, your leg, turn everything slowly, gently, turns while standing, lying on a treatment bed, while sitting on a chair, bending, turning your hand, and with God's help, victory will come!
I feel as if my left side from top of my head to the bottom of my heal is 1 inch shorter than the right side. The rough 1 inch estimate is guessed at reaching with the right side versus the left side with no toe raising. I barely can raise up on my toes on my left side. I don't remember having formal training as to how to reach and grab as a youngster and that is part of my confusion. Overall I don't have Willy nilly movement but must consciously make each move deliberately but am actually beginning to have some Willy nilly movements as time progresses.
