Mate. Been waiting for this one. Not bad at all. Reckon I might stick with soil. Until you do your next experiment. Cheers Rob. Great experiment. Really enjoyed it.
Will be popping some more in a pouch this week. Have been told I can grow spuds through summer so I thought I give it a crack. 👍
Cheers Glen.
Did NOT guess the clay ones would perform so well!! Awesome vid!
Took me by surprise as well David.
Cheers mate.
Nice haul Rob!
It definitely took me by surprise Jim.
Cheers mate.
Kuddos Rob! That's a very good harvest! I myself trying grow bags (got from you last year or so) partially immersed in the grow bed and partially exposed. Easier to contain the root growth which is essential for me since I have a vetly small grow bed. Also it is easier to pull out and put in new ones. I think grow bags in aquaponics would be good combo.. 👍
I will be popping some more spuds in to see how they grow though summer. Was told I couldn't so thought why not.
🤔😉
I'll also be planting out some sweet potato & a capsicum in the third one.
Cheers mate.
So good to know what works. I tried to grow spuds in clay pellets and failed miserably. Thanks again Rob
I think I'll try the clay again next season Emily as I feel they would have done well too if the plants were able to grow full term. 👍
Happy growing.
Awesome harvest, Rob! Well done! You can go now and enjoy your break. We will see you when you get back :)
Have another video to post this week Mary. Just a short one looking at some maintenance on the aquaponics.
Hope all's well with you.
so happy to see you trying new things. keep it up
Very impressive results. I’m currently growing in my clay media bed baby’s potatoes so this gives me more confidence.
Nice one Steve. Let us know how you got on when you pull the plants mate. 👍
That "one" spud looks like a mozzarella ball. Would soil be the better option then?
Fantastic amount of potatoes you've harvested there Rob. Well done.
I definitely think the soil bags would be the way to go Geo. Even if they were sat just at the high tide mark of a flood & drain bed. 👍
Spuddy brilliant
😆 Cheers mate.
You continue to build my to-do list. Thanks for keeping me busy. 👍
Wotcha! Nice experiment, perhaps having pouches that receive plain water growing along side the ones in the nutrient bed would make an interesting comparison? Could also do with a control pouch that you water by hand as well, if you forget to water it occasionally that only helps to make the experiment more true to life. Now bugger of and get back to your break.
🤣 Have been working all of the "break" so far. Went up & filmed a video with a hydro grower that should be released this coming weekend. Might take it easy after I finish editing that. 🤔
Cheers mate & hope all's well with you.
I love potato harvesting. The second bag was great! A very nice harvest! The clay balls were not bad either. Something new for me. Thank you. Take care
Cheers Karen & all the best to you as well.
I am learning hydroponics and love this potato idea. It's one of the main things I want to be able to grow. Thanks for the great video! 👍👍
This is brilliant. Well done!
Cheers H. A thinking I'll be using a bit more soil from now on.
the clay balls give cleaner spuds they could be bandicooted while growing, Vs the soil gives bigger well formed spuds but needs washing.
I'm glad yours worked out! Mine rotted unfortunately. But that was partially my fault with how my watering was setup and being indoors the grow light I had was just a spare and was not powerful enough so they died. But with your harvest I am going to try again! Thanks for posting the update!
Thanks for posting this to UA-cam, I was really interested in how it would turn out after watching the previous video where you set everything up!
It has opened my eyes a fair bit MB. I'm looking forward to grow a few more crops in soil to see how they go.
Great one Rob have a great one mate!
Cheers MK.
You have a top one yourself. 👍
Really enjoying your garden and vids. Thanks!
Glad you're enjoying them Charles. 👍
Cheers & have a top one mate.
Really nice video. Was looking for some time for some information about aquaponic potatos, but there is nealy no information about it on the internet. Very nice to see your results. Keep up, mate ^^
Thanks Joseph. Will be starting another batch in there very soon so we can get some early winter harvests.
would not have thought it would work, well done Rob
Cheers Slowboat. Will be starting some more off this week just to see how they'll go through the warmer weather. Was told they won't grow but thought I'd find out for myself. 😉
What a great experiment, have a great one!
I was most definitely surprised Jennifer.
Cheers & have a top one yourself. 😁
Very inspiring!
Cheers Ronyon.
Nice, Good harvest. Some great info to ponder
Has got me planning another soil grow system Stephan. 🤔
@@RobsAquaponics I do think the potatoes in soil did best, will be trying it myself come spring. I’m currently working out getting a indoor flood and drain setup for my micro greens. And have just startedmy first run at using stainless steel mesh as a grown medium in 1020 trays, well let you know how that goes. Hope all is good for you and yours
Nice experiment it's always good to try new things
I'm thinking of other ways I can incorporate soil into the system as well now GM.
Cheers mate.
Good on you Dave! Rob you inspired me to do spuds this year here in Auckland. I can't wait for harvest. Quite a few weeks to go for me yet.
Dave is a top bloke.
Cheers mate.
Wow Rob! That was amazing! I was not at all expecting that good of harvest. We learn something new at every turn when it comes to gardening. I am looking forward to more similar experiments and your next potato try. How about Sweet Potatoes also? Dave
Thanks for the suggestion Dave. I will plant a slip in one of the soil pouches I pop back into the bath. 👍 Was thinking ginger & sweet pepper for the other two pouches.
Cheers & hope you're having a top weekend by the pond mate. 🥃🥃
@@RobsAquaponics Nice harvest...mmm mash potato or roasting yum🥔looking forward to next grow bag experiment.
Pretty cool Rob, I would have thought they would have rotted having wet feet the whole time. I am going to have to try this.
I think that was definitely the case with the coir BWF. I was thinking mixing in some perlite may have helped a bit.
Cheers mate.
@@RobsAquaponics yes, perlite mixed - maybe a relatively high sand mix too?
AWESOME!!!! I will have to try this out as well. I was ALWAYS wondering if the clay pellets would work. Thanks again for sharing!
Came for the green tree snake, stayed for the spuds👍🏼
Cheers MBM. 😁👍
GRATITUDE 💥🤩💥
Quite nice yield. Didn’t know potatoes could be grown like that. I was going to be a little cheeky and say “A little “anemic” compared to that 7.9kg one this Newzealand couple hoisted out of their regular vegetable bed. “ 🤪
Good looking results for 2 out of the 3. I will not be trying to grow things in just coconut fiber. My spud harvest resulted in smaller potatoes. I had them in canvas bags also, but only top watered with rain caught water. I got a large tray with about a cm. of water flowing at the bottom and topped with the expanded clay balls. I replanted the yams which only produced too small of a spud (too short a growing season) I’m hoping they survive the winter, expecting -6C later this week. The greenhouse should say above freezing 🥶. I also trimmed & replant the ginger which had about tripled in size from what I had planted.
I’m using the tray to bottom water my blueberries, yams and my peppers. I also planted garlic straight into the clay media, tip down in the water. The canvas bags are all filled with soil.
I got a fantastic harvest of dahlia tubers. I pulled them out the wicking beds and replant Ed with carrots and garlic to overwinter. Still harvesting tomatoes, strawberries, and bok choi from the greenhouse.
Thanks for your excellent reporting from your garden!
Cheers 🍻
Sounds like things are still ticking along for you there Joe. I planted out some more ginger on the deck this week & will be putting more out down the back under the mango tree & some in the aquaponics as well I think. Still have loads in the freezer to use up so I figured the latest harvest can go back into the ground.
Cheers mate & all the best to you & yours.
I was at my parents house, playing with "mr. Potato head" sets and my tot kept bringing me pieces until i ran out of slots. I asked Tot to bring me another potato so I could keep going. My dad hands off one of his prize blue spuds. They thought it was hilarious.
If You produced a book i would buy it!
Only the online guide at the moment Wilksy but have plans for a PDF version. Not sure about a physical book though.
Love it! Can't wait to harvest mine now! Tops are almost done in, a week or 2 left in them I reckon. All the best mate! :-)
Hope you get a decent yield Ian.

Good harvest, my spuds are getting absolutely hammered by flea beetles, tried neem oil but didn't seem to work, Hopefully I still get a decent harvest just before xmas.
We haven't seen many of them around lately BZ. Never get them in large amounts so haven't tried any controls on them as of yet. Have you tries a white oil spray?
999 likes bro....i give u the 1000 like....big up
😁 Thanks Radu.
Have a top one mate.
👌👌👌
👍👍😁
Wow. Very nice. We tried growing potatoes in grown bags this year, but haven't harvested them yet. I suspect that it won't be pretty but it was a weird gardening year. Had a really nice grow bag tomoto plant though.
I'm going to plant out some more even though it's the wrong time of year to do so here Sarah. Will be in the aquaponics again.
A1!
Soil wins. Some integrated wicking beds to your AP is a must now.
Most definitely, & am thinking I'll start off with a rain gutter style grow system Gürkan. 🤔
Cheers mate.
i got a similar yield to you per plant dude. not the greatest but its hard to do it in hydro, coco coir was a good choice, i also had moisture problems, even when using perlite, also noticed a decent root ball and i grew mine indoors
Didn't know it was possible. I did have lots of luck with Ruth Stout Method.
Soil was great yield
Blew me away. Think I'll be using a bit more soil ion the aquaponics from now on Rick. 😉
Cheers mate.
you should have done a control group that did not use any aquaponics but was just soil in the same sized bag with pure water at the same rate as the pump, assuming it was e ebb and flow system.
If I had the time & space I would have. This was just a basic trial more for suitable medium.
Cheers.
❤💚
😁👍🌺
I think fine coco coir maybe the best soil less wicking material for self wicking tubs fed with hydroponic fertilizer.
I have seen folks find a mix of perlite with the coir to be the best for Hydro. Not something I've looked into too much.
Humm, Like
Thanks Ramone. 👍
Great video. Does the soil mess with the fish or your PH?
I didn't notice any issues Wes. 👍
Cheers mate.
Nice, but is/was there a difference in the taste or texture between the potatoes grown in the different soils you used?
So far they have all cooked up & tasted the same JA. 👍
Nice harvest, very good for the short amount of time. I ended up pulling my italian late garlic here, mixed results. A lot were small and some had started to seperate so i think i left them too long. Video is on my channel if anyone is interested
Will be tossing some more in this week just to see how they go. I think they should do OK but not sure how much the summer heat will knock them around.
I live in south Texas near San Antonio, and I am doing aquaponics inside our small greenhouse. I would like to grow potatoes. What is your climate like in your part of Australia? Mine is hot and dry in the summer and minor freezes during the winter. Our rainy seasons are typically fall and spring.
Hey D K. We're in the sub tropics (zone 9-10) so can only grow them in Autumn & spring according to most sources. I will be trying another lot in the aquaponics soon though just to see how they grow through summer.
@@RobsAquaponics Thank you sir for addressing my question. I have been learning so much from watching your videos and your guide booklet for purchase. Thank you for placing your useful and instructive videos on UA-cam for public consumption. Very helpful. I wish you and your family blessings from the Lord Most High.
hey Rob i want to ask a question about Aquaponicly grown Okinawa spinach: i'm a first time grower as i found it at the big box store, i done cuttings in soil and aAquaponics, the aquaponics ones grew well, then flowered around the end of winter, but now it has misteriously died / or dieing back, i have to check, compared to soil grown is powering along but never flowered, what's going on ? do they die after flowering ?
It should just keep on growing Shane. Ours flowers quite a bit & we never have die back afterwards.
@@RobsAquaponics thanks Rob, i don't know why it died then, but the ones in pots in potting mix are still growing well. thanks.
Whats the life of the clay balls? I really like the limited mess of the clay balls
The majority of the ones I'm using would be 8-10 years old Tom & they look fine.
I started using some over 20 years ago in hydroponics & they are still in the system here. Can't say for sure which ones they are 😉but I don't see any decaying balls as I dig through the system.
thoswe cabbage butterfly trolls g's what do you do...
🤣🤔 Get more geckos. 😁😁
Hope you folks have been getting some of this rain.
@@RobsAquaponics 😂🤣😂🤣
89 But didn't walk in the corner so I was expecting that at all
👍
I grew some very tasty greens & herbs with well aged urine. 👍
Does it financially make sense?
Aquaponics in general? I think it does as raising fish in an aquaculture system in the backyard is very wasteful water wise. This way we get some plants as a by product. 👍
Really not worth it IMO
Aquaponics, growing spuds, soil aquaponics beds or growing a beard that never gets properly groomed?
@@RobsAquaponics I didn't think about the beard, I'll think about it
