    Hi Rob, well done, 1 mod i would suggest, i wouldn't bury the inlet pipe as you can't check flow easily, i would put a 25mm pvc or even 50mm pipe in the mix stand it up like an upstand and drop the flexy black inlet hose in that, so to check flow just look or lift up without moving hydroton.

    Looks like a well thought out experiment. I had been thinking of something similar but don’t have any room left in the greenhouse, excellent for extending the season but space limiting. I might get rid of the Dutch buckets, they do okay, but not overly thrilled with them (maybe haven’t found the best plant option).
    Also, great tip about filling the bag as the spuds grow!
    My garden is doing okay, had a small issue with something eating on my tomatoes, hit them with BT (Bacillus thuringiensis). Had many tomatoes which had small holes through the skin. Using them in fly traps and getting good fly harvest for the fish (a few moths too, likely the source of the caterpillars I saw). Fish very happy.
    Cheers! 🍻

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  2 роки тому +1

      Last time I used the buckets was in hydro over 20 years ago. Most plants did OK but the tomatoes took forever to ripen under lights so gave it away.
      I've found the moth caterpillars are much more destructive than the cabbage butterfly ones. They don't care what's on offer, they'll smash the lot.
      Cheers Joe 🍻🍻

    Rob/ Fellow Followers- had anyone used pine straw in their aquaponic beds or wicking beds?
    I have massive amount of pine straw available, my roof probably collects enough to fill all my beds!
    I've grown different variety of potatoes including sweet potatoes in a raised bed that had a bottom 4" layer of that falls leaves, mainly oak, to help keep the water from draining it of bed grain set upon mountain rock. Then I did few inches under & on top of the seed potatoes slowly adding as they grew filling the bed (pine straw was kind of mounded). Then when temps warmed I stuck sweet potatoe slips in. Very easy to harvest potatoes from pine straw
    Trying to find economical way, what nature gives me, to fill the beds. Having a complete new system the cost, specially at today's prices, r adding up real fast!

    Hey Rob ! I was motivated by watching your videos and started my own small scale aquaponic system at my place. Its been 3 weeks and my system is still cycling (Fishless) i am getting a high nitrite and nitrate spike on test levels !! could you please guide me what can i do to reduce nitrite levels..as my ammonia levels decrease very fasst .. but nitrite is at peak same with nitrate

      All it will take is time now Tanay. As long as you're continuing to feed the system with ammonia the bacteria will do their job.

    Great video. Are there any "low-water requirement" crops that could be planted in the clay around the potato bags? Something that could thrive on just the rainwater that falls on the tub.

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  2 роки тому +3

      The tub if flooded at the base with the aqua water so will be fairly nutrient rich. I'm thinking a few herbs like basil that can grow over the top might be the go. 👍

    Do you have footage on how to put the framework together for the bath?
    Currently i'm using cement blocks and they're not stable. Your framework looks more stable than the blocks.

      No sorry Leona. I gave a brief run through on the original bathtub worm farm video.
      ua-cam.com/video/MvIWLu3o5OY/v-deo.html
      It's essentially frames from two seats bolted together & the red side rails are the side from an old bed frame. It's cheaper to buy old beds & cut them up than new steel here. 😉
      Hope that helps a little.

      Thanks Rob. I had built a shelving system for the shed using 5x single bed frames and wood from pallets. I'm glad i could bring it with me when i moved.
      I'm thankful for the info that you have provided over the years.
      I've become a bit of a hoarder of baths from the tip recycle centre - to make wicking beds and aquaponic tanks for the fish and plants. I'm still gathering materials and i'm starting off with goldfish (which i have plenty of), and then moving onto food fish.
