👍less is more! Totally agree stick to the basics. At the end of the sleep section around 11:45 is a bedroll in a tent. Is that the Born Outdoor bedroll? Looks sweet! I'm a tent guy and have been hoping to see one in person.
Good video, my Dad took us out camping during all seasons with the basics, I started as a teenager in a mountain bike. When I got married over thirty years ago we used our SUV and ground tents to take all our family vacations, fishing and hunting trips. Loved it, and some of the best memories with my kids, now they are doing it with their partners, all with different platforms. Keep it simple and build out from their.
It was great to meet Cara and you!! Thank you for all your great videos! Spot on with this video, that was our rig at 7:37. We just got our Jeep at the end of March and this was our first outing.
Well, just b/c you have a YT channel, doesn't mean you're using your rigs more than anyone else. It just means you video your outings more than most others. I know several people (self included) who use the hell out of our vehicles for camping/overlanding and other trips.
I said "most" not "all" LOL The fact that this is my full time job and I'm literally out weekly off road and camping and going on extended trips lasting weeks at a time makes me confident in my statement.
Great video to show what you really need as a basic camping supplies/rig. I started with an early Bronco and a roof rack to haul the kids playpen and our tent. 2 little girls and me n momma for a week camping in different places every day. I did find out a good fart sack was imperative to warm sleeping in higher elevations. Had a few nights where kids were shivering in their bag until the sun warmed the tent.
Good Morning Matt, Saw you at Expo Mountain West on Saturday, was going to say hi, but you were eating so we gave you some space. Hope you enjoyed the expo as much as we did. It was our first Expo and we loved the event, but it was so overwhelming. My wife loves your gladiator, she has a mojave in the same color and I explained how you got the bandaid. She was very impressed and now wants a rack like yours. Thank you for sharing your experience and as always looking forward to each and every video.
I overland in my Jeep Renegade Trailhawk. Got Ophir and Imogene Pass badges. Gone to Kennedy Peak in Medicine Bow (Wyoming) and surprised all the group I was with when we went up a boulder field. I kept getting compliments from everyone that they weren’t sure I was going to make it but it shocked everyone. You can do this stuff with anything as long as you are determined and have good people spotting and encouraging you.
Hi That was me with the dog in the background of the intro to this video. Saw you recording so I didn’t interrupt. Great exclamation. I live local to that Expo and tent camp all around CO, UT, OR. In The San Juan’s next week!! You don’t need all the expensive gear to enjoy yourself. Get out and figure out what you really need.
Great video, Matt, and nice to meet you at the show this past weekend. You get lots of points for having the built-up rig and actually taking it out for its intended purpose. So many trailer queens were there at the show, and I get the feeling that the only dirt they've ever seen is in the lot at the show itself. Obviously you don't need stuff like that if you're just going to a forest service campground, where 90%+ of folks will go (and thoroughly enjoy).
Now you're getting there. I spent less on my entire setup than most of these guys have in their wheel tire setup. New comers need to see the barrier for entry as obtainable.
Here's a little input on how we do our setup. My wife and I are both disabled, And I have sleep apnea. We have a 93 Jeep YJ and a 4 by 5 enclosed trailer. So our needs are Ground Tent with cots, We have a jackery 500 And are adding 200 W of solar to the trailer with a 200ah battery for a 12v fridge. We spend time mostly in National Forests or WMA And we have the time of our life. Our saying on our channel is " Get out and find YOUR Adventure " and we do just that. Excellent video as always Matt 👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you! I've been stressing out trying to make a decade of savings plans to save up for all these cool things I need, and while I still want to save, I feel more comfortable going out sooner with less showy things and having fun
I just love your videos even though I don't have an overland er vehicle I do have a Ram ProMaster van class B van that gets me outdoors! Keep on filming 😊
Great Video on how to navigate the temptations and exhausting options now in the camping world. I am in my third year of making mods to my vehicle based on what we do. I have a garage attic full of camping gear from over 40 years of “Car Camping” and backpacking. I still use a lot of my original gear and have replaced some (worn out) gear with new ones. Not all gear on the market is improved. Nicely done, in showing the different aspects to “just getting out” camping and learning as you go, that is a big part of the adventure. #1 item, make sure you have a good, safe, reliable 4-wheel drive vehicle that one-knows and understands its limits. Everything after that is part of the adventure and growth by adding things that make your adventures more comfortable and enjoyable. There seems to be a lot more interest today than when I started camping back in the mid 60’s but then there is a lot more comfort equipment today than back then - LOL. We still base camp and explore the areas where we camp so I wouldn’t describe what we do as “Overlanding”. My (personal) definition of overlanding is just that, camp and go, which is cool and seems to be the new trend in camping - not a bad thing, just different from what I was brought up doing and still do. Thanks again for the video.
Going out this weekend and I will be using my backpacking stuff. I have the full blown camping gear too but when I'm alone I try and keep it simple. I will have some movies downloaded on my tablet and some cold brews but that's about it.
Thanks for this video, Matt. It's so easy to get lost in the latest and greatest gear, watching amazing videos from storytellers, and daydreaming. Sometimes we need to hear things like this to stay grounded.
Massive respect to you Matt. Love your laid-back content! I so appreciate how in your videos AND the off-roading fb page i occasionally see you comment in, you're always so based and respectful toward those of us that don't have, and can't afford built out, fully kitted out rigs (like yours). THANKS ‼️
Hi Matt, thank you so much for the content in this video. With your experience and knowledge, I truly value your feedback and working towards getting out there and creating my own memories. Hopefully we meet at some point. I hope all I well with the OOA Family. Have a great day. 🙏🏽💙🚙
Great Video was there all weekend at expo your right Lotts of stuff over the top only thing I might add for beginners is a good map or FunTreks book and a current BoyScout Book covers all the basics and leave no trace camping. See you all at Big Iron!
Thanks for the video. This is one that needed to be made. I’ve been overlanding before it was cool. Station wagons ground tents pickup beds you name it. It was good to talk with you guys for a few minutes on Saturday and Sunday. Safe travels and hopefully I’ll see you again.
I went to my first expo this year in Missouri I met you briefly a couple of times when I got home my daughter asked me how the gathering of the nurds went lol
Sorry I didn't get a chance to meet & talk to you on Friday. I was trying to stay out of the rain. I am a newbie to overlanding and can say that because of your videos I have been able to get some good stuff at very reasonable prices to begin my adventures. Still waiting on a few items to show up but I agree that the Expo was more towards the latest/greatest toys. I did get some ideas on how to save money by coming up with alternative ways to do things by seeing what some of the vendors (and their high prices) were offering. Hopefully our paths will cross some day. 🙂 Got my SetPower PT35, My Bluetti and my Ignik cuz of you and I thank you. GAIA is next. Oh and I drive a Bronco Sport Badlands
I appreciate the video...as someone who has been working my way up from the basics to items that are "just a little nicer" " it's good to hear a point of view that is realistic and calls out what flaws are in some systems or products...unless someone is sponsored, trial and error gets expensive quite quickly (an example...poorly constructed and overpriced tents and refrigerators) . Thanks for being a leader.
Thank you for the great video! We all will begin our overlanding adventure somewhere. My family and I are just getting started, and it’s true, don’t wait until you build out what you THINK you need to overland, because life will pass you by. This point was well stated by Peter Van Stralen. Just Go!
I have learned to not over think it. I watched your 2 videos on worthless gear and game changer gear. I have a Nissan Titan 2 WD that I tow our trailer trailer and go backpack camp. I am saving up for 4WD to get little more off-road. There is UA-cam girl in Sweden that has a Nissan Frontier and topper and gets out with it. Just simple Thanks for sharing.
Love to see it! Howdy guys! This video was perfect for us as we begin our Overlanding journey in our Jeep Gladiator! UPDATE!! Our Bed rack, and roof top tent will be here this week! We are chomping at the bit to get this thing up! Cannot wait.
Enjoyed this video as I have many of your videos. I especially appreciate the honesty in saying; "start with what you have". In addition, loved the "I'm not trying to start a self-inflicted version of Survivor". I might steal that line.
This is an amazing and much needed video for me. Many thanks for sharing that Matt. Keeping my wish list humble as much as I humanely can to not be broke buying all the amazing gear I see on youtube! You are the man I need when I go out shopping in home depot or Ace and remove the un-needed tools from the cart just cause I like them 😁
I actual am a REI member and I like there return policy. 1 year no questions asked! I will say it can be more expensive compared to Amazon but the return policy is sometimes worth it.
I have a 4runner trd pro arriving soon and not going all out and dumping 20k into gear I won't even know how to use is a real struggle. I'm struggling hard lol. Great video. I can't wait for my 4runner, I haven't gotten to get out and camp in over 2 years now because of work...but I finally did what I said I was gonna do and quit so...
👍great message for people new to this Matt! Vehicle, food/water, shelter and people should bring some common sense too so they don't start unintentional fires, or get stuck and need off-road recovery, etc.
Thanks Mat my rule is always keep it simple and like you said build out as you grow into it. I just bought some gear at a estate sale. Couple of north face sleeping bags and a stove( I already owned one but it was showing it's wear and I couldn't find another I liked) that had never been used. But the person that bought them went all in from the start. Only thing I didn't buy was the Toyota 4runner.....
I'm starting with a low mileage 4WD R51 Nissan Pathfinder I found for $10k. Few minor upgrades to the vehicle, nothing fancy. All of the seats fold flat, so I bought a decent memory foam mattress from Amazon and sleep in the car. Still plenty of space to carry what I need for a few days out. More room on the roof rack if I ever need to. Would I like a RTT? Sure. But they are overpriced IMO and I don't want it on the car all the time, so taking it down and putting back up so much would be a pain. After my first trip I determined what was good, what was bad, and what I would change for the next trip. Already slimmed down my packing list for the next one and reduced the size of things by going with better options. This time around I'll have a 12 volt fridge and a power station and I really don't see myself needing much more for convenience, maybe a portable shower at some point. Either way it doesn't take much to get out there and enjoy it.
Yesterday, a friend was asking what she needed to get started with overlanding. I replied, "The back seat of your Impreza and a pillow." Obviously a bit of a joke, but I think it resonates with this video. People are quick to blow things out of proportion and jump on the "I need to spend $10,000 to go camping in the mountains" bandwagon. Does money spent make things more comfortable? Yeah. Is it required? Nah.
I've been overlanding full-time for three years, the gear I have now has probably cost me about $2,000, that's it. Some people spend that on a roof rack, it boggles my mind the money people spend.
Hello there brother long time subscriber and first time commenting I would like to say thank you for the inspiration and information about gear for overlanding travel 😊 I’m a weekend warrior myself but I’m looking forward to doing long term overlanding in the future! I love watching your travels and how your setup on your rig and your wife rig too 😊 Can’t wait to see your next video this is Big Boy Frank from Texas peace out ✌️ and safe travels!
Funny this video comes out today. I have a fully tricked out Tacoma. Just sold my rtt and bed rack. Going back to a basic ground tent. Keeping the setup as simple as possible. Getting rid of a lot of items I found out I don’t need.
Sea to Summit was there with their Watercell X bags and I don't think people talk about these enough. I have several of them that I'll take on long trips to Death Valley and other desert places. They conform to whatever space you want to put them in and can be put inside cases, instead of needing secured somewhere like bulky jugs. The best thing is they roll up and essentially disappear once you empty one.
@@OzarkOverlandAdventures I've got 2 large ones and a small one. They're great! 👍 Sorry I didn't get a chance to talk to you there. I saw you coming out of the bathroom early one day before the consumers showed up but I wasn't going to bother you that early in the morning to say hi. 😆
I wanted to spend the weekend there so bad since it’s only a couple hours north, but budget didn’t justify. New tires on 2 cars took precedence. I really wanted to meet y’all.
While I agree with the sentiment of just go, the wilderness is unforgiving, so plan your trip for your skill and supply ability. For instance most recently was the couple and their baby and dog in the sierra national forest. They just went, under equipped and underskilled.
Did you and the wife break open your 1984 time capsule and take out the sunglasses 👍😁.... Those have got to be worth a couple of grand on eBay being so rare and an antique. Hope you had a great time at OE West !!
It is rare but it can happen, water outage at your home. Keep your water containers full at home when not overlanding. You never know when you may need it. Extra food too and keep your powerstations charged. Nice to see Kevin, Pete, and Carol. Good people. Sarah too but she wasn't in the video. Probably taking care of that cute little thing they have.
Is there a concern about attracting bears when you cook such good smelling stuff? The one time we went camping in our pop up camper (at a camp ground), a bear came by and tired to get in the bear box for 20 minutes to get to our ice chest! Scared me! I kept thinking about what I might have left in the camper.
We've never had an issue with bears but we also don't camp in camp grounds. The only places you need to worry about wildlife are national and state parks and campgrounds where they are used to associating people with food. Where we camp they are far more afraid of you than you are of them. Now Racoons on the other hand.... LOL
People need to not be ashamed of going to military surplus stores. We perfected camping and overlanding. The gear is cheap, functional and if you decide its not for you it can often be repurposed or easy to get rid of.
People over complicate things all the time, Overlanding is just camping and hiking with your car, all you need is basic camping stuff and some car recovery stuff, just get out there and do it
Not realistic? Bro, I live in Colorado. RTTs are everywhere! Even see the occasional trailer. And Subarus are our official state bird. I’ve seen RTTs on every type of vehicle!😊
Vehicle of some sort, tent or tarp, maybe a swag and something to cook on. That’s it really. I know Americans have a different idea of what overloading is compared to everyone else, but your vehicle doesn’t need to be 4x4, could be a bicycle, plenty of people exploring the world on bicycles. You can ‘ overland’ and never leave asphalt🤷♂️overlanding is about exploring and meeting new people, what surface is under your wheels is irrelevant.
Awesome video. Peter van Stralen said it best. Just go.
This is one of the reasons I love your channel. Yes we are all different and you do not judge.
Was awesome to meet you both at Expo! Thanks for the shout out!

Great video and awesome seeing you guys here in CO. You guys were so nice just in passing. You guys are just so real! I appreciate you.
Thanks so much!!
Matt, I love your enthusiasm and desire to connect with and inform other overlanders.
Thank you!!
It was great to meet Cara and you!! Thank you for all your great videos! Spot on with this video, that was our rig at 7:37. We just got our Jeep at the end of March and this was our first outing.

On point as always. I fought the fridge for a long time. I won't goback to ice and all I have is the basic /cheep-o set power. Major game changer

Hi
That was me with the dog in the background of the intro to this video. Saw you recording so I didn’t interrupt.
Great exclamation. I live local to that Expo and tent camp all around CO, UT, OR. In The San Juan’s next week!!
You don’t need all the expensive gear to enjoy yourself. Get out and figure out what you really need.

😮 i started in a 1982 chevy chevette out in Phoenix. She would go most places i wanted to go.
Man I truly dig your videos because u keep it real and encourage people to do their own thing!
Thanks!!
Great seeing you and Cara last weekend. I’ve been “just going” since before I could drive. The rig is much nicer today, but the adventure is the same.
Saw your rig, but missed you at the expo. Lots of cool stuff there, but totally agree, start simple.
Now you're getting there. I spent less on my entire setup than most of these guys have in their wheel tire setup.
New comers need to see the barrier for entry as obtainable.
Great information. That looked like a neat expo to go check out.
There you go agin hittin the nail on the head. Main goal get out and have fun!
Great advice! I bought a Badlands Sasquatch before my first overlanding trip lol
Excellent video as always Matt 👍🏻👍🏻
Sounds awesome!!
Can you power a skillet or a hot plate with your jackery?
@anthonydunn8199 we've never tried, I use the jackery for my c-pap machine, and we cook with propane.
Thank you! I've been stressing out trying to make a decade of savings plans to save up for all these cool things I need, and while I still want to save, I feel more comfortable going out sooner with less showy things and having fun
Start small, start now!
Really enjoyed this one! Thanks for sharing the tips.
I just love your videos even though I don't have an overland er vehicle I do have a Ram ProMaster van class B van that gets me outdoors! Keep on filming 😊

This was what i needed to see .......thank you !!!!!!!!!!
love the info, my setup is a 16 rubicon and a contractor trailer off a 07 gmc canyon. no tent for me. no fabric on the oregon coast.
Thanks for this video, Matt. It's so easy to get lost in the latest and greatest gear, watching amazing videos from storytellers, and daydreaming. Sometimes we need to hear things like this to stay grounded.
A vehicle (preferably 4x4), ground tent, cheap cooler, etc. same stuff as you would when you would camp anywhere. Start there.
That is what John "minimalist" Brodowski has been preaching for years! good video...but me on the other hand...I love all the stuff :)
Massive respect to you Matt. Love your laid-back content! I so appreciate how in your videos AND the off-roading fb page i occasionally see you comment in, you're always so based and respectful toward those of us that don't have, and can't afford built out, fully kitted out rigs (like yours).

I always have a Sawyer with me for water filtration. Works great with a 1L bottle.
Was great to get to meet you guys today, the boys talked about it all afternoon!

Good video topic. Those expos while I have never been, remind me of like SEMA for overlanding. Fully loaded, and over the top.

Yes am still subscribed. Thanks for sharing the common sense advice. Cheers 🍺
This is an amazing and much needed video for me. Many thanks for sharing that Matt. Keeping my wish list humble as much as I humanely can to not be broke buying all the amazing gear I see on youtube! 16:36 every video of Overland Expo West I have seen so far has either shown or talked about Mike’s GT-R (Last Line of Defense)
I had not idea that was Mike's lol. I saw his Tacoma there but never saw him.
I like either butane stove or wood fire.
👍great message for people new to this Matt! Vehicle, food/water, shelter and people should bring some common sense too so they don't start unintentional fires, or get stuck and need off-road recovery, etc.
Thank you for another great video with content!! I will have to say I agree with everything you said about overlanding. Again Thank you.
Thanks Mat my rule is always keep it simple and like you said build out as you grow into it. I just bought some gear at a estate sale. Glad more Overlanding channels are saying just to get out there and not get all the gear.
Did you happen to see BadAssBrunette’s Tacoma build?
Yesterday, a friend was asking what she needed to get started with overlanding. I replied, "The back seat of your Impreza and a pillow."
Obviously a bit of a joke, but I think it resonates with this video. People are quick to blow things out of proportion and jump on the "I need to spend $10,000 to go camping in the mountains" bandwagon. Does money spent make things more comfortable? Yeah. Is it required? Nah.
My Grayl didn’t take out the chlorine from the Las Vegas taps. Should I have run more through the filter? It didn’t really work too well over 3 days
Thanks!!
We actually bought a small one but I didn't see any large ones. Didn't even know they made larger ones. They would be cool to have!
How big a deal is “pinstriping” a vehicle while over landing? Should I get an old Jeep or use my new full size pickup?
I wanted to spend the weekend there so bad since it’s only a couple hours north, but budget didn’t justify. New tires on 2 cars took precedence. I really wanted to meet y’all.
what do you do to deal with security of the stuff on your rig not getting stolen while using it as a daily driver
I've never worried about it and never had an issue.
Good video 👍
Thanks 👍
While I agree with the sentiment of just go, the wilderness is unforgiving, so plan your trip for your skill and supply ability. For instance most recently was the couple and their baby and dog in the sierra national forest. They just went, under equipped and underskilled.
Haha
I'm just getting started
Got a 4 x 4 geo tracker and turning into a desert rig...
Are you still rocking the Panther Winch?
Yep. Doing great!
@@OzarkOverlandAdventures Nice.
Did you and the wife break open your 1984 time capsule and take out the sunglasses 👍😁.... Those have got to be worth a couple of grand on eBay being so rare and an antique.
Hope you had a great time at OE West !!
Estate sales, the wife and I have found some great gear on the cheap.
The guy in the background at 1:30 could NOT get that spray to work right! Lol
I LoVE Earth Roamers. Crazy expensive though
You forgot the first thing you need! It’s heat! 😁😁😁😁😁
Heat?
@@OzarkOverlandAdventures you are the first person I have ever encountered who hasn’t known what heat is? 🤷🏼♂️😁
@@johnowens8530 🤷🏼♂️😂
I'm happy to use the basics, but if I want my partner to come with. I better be prepared for everything!
Go ask Brad over at Trailrecon how that Sprinter Van is working out lol.
Yep I know.
LOL
Were you riding a hover board at the beginning of the video? Lol
OneWheel lol
So. What were you riding? I can tell you weren't always walking.
Are you on an electric scooter?
OneWheel
People need to not be ashamed of going to military surplus stores. We perfected camping and overlanding. The gear is cheap, functional and if you decide its not for you it can often be repurposed or easy to get rid of.
People over complicate things all the time, Overlanding is just camping and hiking with your car, all you need is basic camping stuff and some car recovery stuff, just get out there and do it
Not realistic? Bro, I live in Colorado. RTTs are everywhere! Even see the occasional trailer. And Subarus are our official state bird. I’ve seen RTTs on every type of vehicle!😊
Do a giveaway and maybe I'll win one lol. Actually, what I have isn't THAT bad for overlanding. Might be good to be bigger.
