A tie can help or hurt you, if a team has the amount of wins as you, because you have a tie and therefore you're ahead of them cause you have less loses. It can hurt you, if you have I less win but more loses then there hurts you, and essentially knock you out of a playoff spot.

An interesting note to put in here is that I once played a franchise league, and in my first year, I was one of two 9-7 NFC teams, along with the Lions. Since I beat the Lions head to head, I should have got the number 6 seed in the playoffs. However, I actually missed the playoffs, and the 6 seed was given to the Lions.
I had something similar happen with the Chiefs being in a 3 way tie with Denver and Cincinnati at 10-6. Beat Denver twice and Cincy but they both got the 5 and 6 seeds
I have actually worked the math on some of these scenario's. Until I got bored with it, the most glaring of the possibilities (to me) is the fact that no 12-4 team has ever missed the Play-offs, although the chances are fair of it happening.

I think Strength of Schedule is tied into the final playoff positions. Its difficult to put into text, but there is a list of different things that determine where a team would be positioned at the end of the season.

You'd have to repeat the experiment to make sure it wasn't a coin toss. Also, note the standings after every week. If a team goes up in the standings, you could isolate what caused it
if this were to happen, the first applicable tiebreaker would be net points in conference games, then net points in all games, then touchdowns scored, then coin toss. So if you're gonna tie, make it a shootout lmao.
I dunno if anyone else noticed it, but the playoff teams all came from the North divisions in the AFC and NFC. It probably just takes it from those 2 divisions every time
I once simmed 50 years of franchise in I believe Madden 07 for the achievement and I remember after each regular season the simulation would stop and then once you finished the Super Bowl I believe you had to go through the off season and sim that and then the preseason before you could sim all 17 regular season games in a row. So you pretty much had to stay at the tv and keep checking to see if it needed you to manually tell it to start simming again and back then simulating a week took forever.
I was gonna say, it's not possible for it to be chosen randomly. If someone a decision is reached in the game, then there is a process used to determine it, if there wasn't the computer would not be able to progress or an error would end up accruing somewhere.

That would make the most sense because even in tie games one team had the overall hardest schedule and would therefore be the #1 seed.

In North American sports, a team's record is given as W-L-T, not W-D-L as is common elsewhere.
