By what definition of “elites” do journalists and lobbyists count as “elite”? I agree that the economy is doing well… stock markets are way up, employment is the best it’s been since Clinton was President, inflation is coming down, local and state governments are finally taking care of some of the neglected infrastructure, rents and home prices have mostly stopped increasing (in some markets rents are actually coming down slightly) as new housing stock gets built… domestic manufacturing is up, trade deficits are down… while I agree that the President has little direct control over the economy, why wouldn’t the Biden administration publicize the current strength of the economy?
@@cacao1312 I'm not not rich, just old, and with age comes a little perspective. Inflation is baked in to the capitalist market system that Americans favor, so prices are always going up. As long as wages keep up , then the economy is OK, there is continued growth. For example, when I got my first "real" job in 1985 I was paid $3.35/hour, but an average new car cost like $18,000, (about 3 years pay); today that same job (stockboy in a local pharmacy) pays $15/hour, and that average new car costs $45,000, so only 1.5 years pay. But people look and say OMG, I used to be able to buy a car for only $18k now it's $45k, so much inflation. My dad was born in 1918, his first 'real' job was tamping ties for the Reading Railroad for $5/day, and an average car cost around $850, less than a year's pay, yet when I was a kid (early 1970's) he would have been laughed at as a grumpy old man if he had complained that stuff was so much more expensive than when he was a kid. Perhaps you don't like cars as an example, let's look at the price of a loaf of bread: in 1985 it was 66¢, now the national average is $2.50, so, relative to wages, the price of bread has gone down. I suspect that you have been duped by politicians who want to paint the current economy as "bad" or "failing" for political reasons, but both their reasoning and conclusions are fallacious, the economy is fine, Americans are doing ok, the reasons many take multiple jobs has more to do with very expensive health care and a consumerist mentality than a need for more income just to provide for essentials. One final thought: my grocery bills have not gone up nearly as much as those of some of my friends, and I was curious as to why, it turns out that, becase I don't eat any animals products at all, and becase I buy mostly whole foods (not processed) I've seen much less increase in food prices than those who eat meat and milk and eggs. If the American economy was truly doing badly there would be much less demand for expensive foodstuffs like beef and pork, and preprepared foods like frozen dinners, but instead there were records set for sale of very expensive snake foods for the Super Bowl (Americans bought nearly 80 million pounds of chips (corn and potato) for the game, up over 20% from last year, for a cost of nearly a half billion dollars. Hardly the sign of a weak economy!)
