  • If you are associating yourself with MTB - then it's kind of a benchmark to pass Haanja100. I been lucky enough to be here in dry conditions, but wouldn't say I won't want to testify it on wet. The fun part comes after such races, not during, haha!
    This is one of the last few race analysis this year from me - thus let me know how the season was for you too!

    Great overview, super nice to see the pace and metrics of someone racing in top positions.
    I have done H100 10x (unfortunately not this year), but always in the middle of the pack.
    The closer you get to the rear end of the pack, the more friendly the participants become, I guess it's hard racing in the front and nobody is willing to slow down, stop or leave their tools.
    I feel the same about the spa, never used it, but it comes as a package probably because the organizer books the complete hotel for this event and therefore there are fixed costs involved for them.

      Thanks a lot! I am always interested to ask people... 10times, its a huge number! What made you to do back to back racing? I guess it becomes as a tradition of some sort, for september and season finish?:)
      In regards to the friendliness levels - yes, I am aware that seriousness levels comes down, and this can usually be well seen by pictures galleries too! :) I always say that racing is a secondary thing, where being human is always at first - thus that sometimes detours my expectations from others too, haha! But yeah, I at least tried my luck, no guarantees, nor hard feelings on that. Sometimes it works, others it does not.
      And yes - spa thing is kind of wide spread topic I guess - where imagine only minority chooses it, then spoils the whole relaxation part too. So its all good on that part, just this way or offering and thats it. Why you was not there this year?? I guess it was the warmest and best conditions ever - unlikely to repeat, ha!:)

    Nice to see this kind of analysis from the front of the race (front from my viewpoint, I usually finish in top 30-50%).
    This was my 10th Haanja 100 race and extremely enjoyable thanks to the superb weather. I don't mind muddy cold weather (as it is usually during Haanja 100) - mud and slippery roots are fun, but sometimes it's nice to ride in warm and dry too :) 2020 was also very warm and dry Haanja 100.
    Haanja 100 is definitely one of my favourite races, I love it's difficult climbs and steep descents and how much singletrack it has.
    It was sad to see the unfriendlyness in the front, it's a way more friendly and relaxed at positions where I race.
    PS! Your Strava link is wrong - it links to some dudes run activity in Portugal.

    • @tom10crafted
      @tom10crafted  9 місяців тому

      Thanks for a notice about Strava link - missed last digit!!
      I am impressed by all those people finishing it XX times - it is not a ride in the park after all, and is as challenging as it can get in our region! As someone who came here for the first time, I can see event getting better and better over the years, if new singletracks are usually added every year. Thus that collection of singles builds up and fun level grows!
      Thanks for sharing your take from that - and congratulations with 10th finish! (Nice number, isn't it? haha!! Tom10©:D )

    Very nice analysis. Couple of years back they did also Haanja 100 mile race but participation count was too low to keep it going, I think. You are welcome back to Estonia!

    • @tom10crafted
      @tom10crafted  9 місяців тому +1

      Thanks, Tõnu! If I am not mistaken they do 100 miles now with a gap of few years - for hunger to accumulate! :) Which makes sense - only few would want to do that in race mode, haha! These type of ultras are not yet in my bucket list, but who knows, maybe some day!

      Hey, thanks a lot! I am becoming tires geek, thus will attack you with a bunch of questions to begin with, haha!
      1. What terrain do you race?
      2. What race types?
      3. What is your own weight?

  • @dyingbreedMTB

    Very good overview of the race, I was also participating but was competing for the bottom 10 places with 11h+ time. This year conditions were great, I firstly tried to pass the course on 2021, when it was raining and conditions were very muddy, which made the climbs twice as hard. That year I needed to withdraw half way, because very slow pace. Sorry to hear about the not very friendly encounters at top, but I can assure you that people in the bottom were very friendly and helpful, maybe it is related that they are not competing. About the fees and communication, I think it is because of small organizing team, I also wanted some exceptions on first year, but with no luck.

    • @tom10crafted
      @tom10crafted  9 місяців тому

      Thanks, glad it was useful in some way! I can only imagine how hard courses becomes on wet - zero rolling, always constant momentum needed and not to mention hike the bike scenarios - like, tripling easily! How was your experience this year? I guess you didn't mind stopping in SP's and chilling too! :)
      Well, its true that usually the first quarter or so of participants are much into competing, which is to be expected in the race, haha! Not the place to chit chat or find friends during the event, maybe afterwards at best! :D

      @@tom10craftedIt is good to see these videos, because I am always wondering how the leaders will ride these very technical sections:) This year first 40km up to 2nd TP were very good and I felt quite strong making a sub 9hour time, but then these punchy and narrow singletracks begun, which draw all the energy out of me up to a 70th km when joy of riding started to comeback and on the gravel section I was able to go full throttle again.
      Since I was slow in the end 3rd and 4th TP was already closed, but yes in the first two I was able to chill few minutes. And also I had local friends who helped me out during the race, which is a very huge bonus!

    • @tom10crafted
      @tom10crafted  9 місяців тому

      @@dyingbreedMTB Now imagine the leader going all of this 1.2times faster than I did:) At some point it comes as stronger legs, at others - more about being technical and wasting less energy. It never gets easier - you just become faster - which I can admit saying that singletracks in the middle and second half were killer for all I guess. Well, mostly! :D
      Next time your goal will be to be ahead of time in SP's - I am sure this is not your last one:)

    • @dyingbreedMTB
      @dyingbreedMTB 9 місяців тому

      @@tom10crafted Definately not my last Haanja100, third start and second finish. Although each time I am wondering why :D
      I guess I need to change my training strategy for next season, more races, but shorter distances, currenty I have done fewer, but in marathon length (min 70km long) and also losing 20kg of body weigth could benefit :D
      I also saw your Tartu's marathon video, it has usually been my training for Haanja, but this year had to miss due to illness. And yes Tartu is getting more and more a gravel race, because gravel riding is more popular in Estonia..

    • @tom10crafted
      @tom10crafted  9 місяців тому

      Now as you said it out loud - you have to share the "WHY" thing :D As I been asking this question in my mind when thinking about 20 times finishers - crazy!
      Just from my point of view, training is a matter of personal preference, but having at least few long rides (similar to race distance) is crucial to have in the luggage before entering such races. Not like it gives guarantees for finishing, but adds some needed strains:) And yeah, Tartu's this year was far from MTB, but still nice to be a part of that huge chunk of people! BTW, if you been ill on Tartu, then chances are high that consequences was still there on H100:)
